2011-2016 Impala/Limited (9th Gen) Rattles When Going Over Bumps

  • Does your 9th Gen Impala have an annoying rattle coming from the rear of the car when driving down a bumpy road? Before you go spend money on new rear struts, swaybar endlinks, bearings, lateral arms, etc, etc, check your passenger rear e-brake cable. Before jacking your car up, drive down a residential street, depress your e-brake pedal very very lightly (if you manage to get it to click, you've gone too far!) and see if the noise goes away. If it does, follow this video as I show you a cheap and easy fix!
    The only items I used were 5 medium-sized zip ties and a 4" piece of fuel hose split down the middle. The part that I zip-tied the parking brake cable to is called a "spindle rod."
    As an aside, the 2006-2010 Impalas have a different style of parking brake setup than the 2011-2013 (and 2014-2016 Limiteds.) Whereas the 06-10's have the same "drum in hat" parking brake that the 00-05's have, the newer models revert to the "ratcheting caliper" style that the 94-99 1st Gen W-Bodies have.
    Thanks for watching! Any questions or comments, please post below. If you found this informative or helpful in any way, give a the video a thumbs up! Be sure to check out my other videos and hit the subscribe button!

    I have the 2014 Impala old body style; bought it used from Chevy dealer and was only about 2 years old when it started making this same nasty rattling slapping noise a few months after buying it. Had them check it out and unbelievably they said they hear something but need to do more digging. You would think Chevrolet would have a long history of this known complaint. And believe it or not last year bought a 2011 and it makes this damn nasty smacking rattle. Took a peek under the 2011, the disengaged parking cable a little loose and i can move it making some the rattling noise by hitting the body. Thanks for figuring this out, the dealer couldn't or just didn't care.

    Gah!! Just a month after I did a rear brake job....I stumble upon this video. Mine also makes a noise but mine is a lot more persistent and pronounced than yours seemed to be but it's certainly coming from that area. I guess once spring comes....I will be pulling those wheels off once again and checking to see if this is my issue!

      Although I don't mention it in the video, you should also check your swaybar endlinks to see if they're worn out or loose. If it's not the e-brake cable clacking around, there's a good chance it's one or both of the endlinks causing the noise.

      @@CertifiedShadetree Those have been replaced, so I know for a fact that it's not the swaybar links. :)

      Curious if you had your car in for an alignment recently. I had my car aligned immediately after I installed new struts and swaybar endlinks. When I got the car back, I noticed a clunk emanating from the rear. Jacked the car up, and sure as shit, ALL 4 endlink nuts were loose!! Alignment shop forgot to snug them back down after aligning the car. Needless to say I had no more clunk after I snugged the nuts down properly...

    I just got my back shocks replaced and I’m hearing a rattling noise come from my passenger side rear. I don’t know if the strut needs to be adjusted or what. I can hear it when I drive it down the road and, it drives me nuts. I’m taking it back to the shop tomorrow to see. The guy said I would have to leave it with him for a few hours. Very frustrating and annoying

    • @CertifiedShadetree

      Could very well be the sway bar end links. They could be either loose or worn out. The exhaust pipes or heat shields could also be loose.

    Darn. It wasn't my emergency brake cable, unfortunately. Turns out it was the shoe of the man that was in my trunk. How he got there? Beats the hell out of me. :0

    thanks man very informative hopefully is going to be my solved issue tomorrow cause if not i will say goodbye to my good wife oh sorry to my good driving car mercdes 230 coupe. only one question though; how did you recover from the emotional damage these noises do? i don't dare to drive in my street no more bumps everywhere ! lol

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm more likely to suffer from hearing loss than emotional damage, as I just turn my stereo up louder to drown out the noises (both the ones in my head and the ones the car makes.) 🤣

  • @devinmallard4245
    @devinmallard4245 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's your rear struts. Mine did the same thing til I replaced them. The extra vibration caused by the struts being old and worn rattles the cable.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny thing, I replaced my struts last fall and that damn cable just started clacking again. I think my zip-tie holding the cable to the spindle rod broke...

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also check your swaybar end links. They will make a clunking sound if they're worn or loose, whereas the e-brake cable is more of a clacking sound.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it the new body style Impala, or the Impala Limited that looks like the older 2006-2013? If it's the new body style, then I have no earthly idea if the e-brake is like the car in the video. If it's a 2014 Impala Limited, then yes.

      @@CertifiedShadetree It’s the new body style so yeah, I’m not sure. All I know is it wasn’t doing this before I got the shocks replaced. That’s why it’s going back to where I got it repaired at. Maybe something isn’t tight enough or, it needs to be reinstalled. Thank you for responding so quickly!
