- I sometime am surprised how many items in your kitchen we buy but can be made. Corn syrup is so easy to make. It is a fraction of the cost and it actually tastes better.
Corn syrup
2 cups water
5 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch salt
Put all ingredients into a pan over high heat. Stir until the sugar is wet. Place a candy thermometer on the side of your pan. Use a little water on a basting brush to rim the pan and not get sugar crystals while it starts to boil. Once it boils you can stop this step. Do not stir the mix after the initial stirring or this can cause crystals. Boil the mix over high until it reached 240 degrees. Set the pan to the side and let it cool completely. . Once it has cooled pour the mix into a jar or other airtight container.
The mix with thicken and if it gets too thick just microwave it a little before use. You use it the same as you would commercial corn syrup in your recipe.
Store in the cabinet up to 6 months.

It's called 'Invert Sugar', and if you caramelize it, then it's called 'Golden Syrup'.
Simple camping recipe. Potatoes brushed with oil and then salt. Wrap in aluminum foil. When your camp fire is done for night, bury your potatoes in the hot coals. When you wake up, yum. You can eat with salt or fry them for breakfast or use them as a side for lunch or dinner. Enjoy your trip & God Bless you. * new to channel, luv your tips. THANKS
Yum! I’ll have to try that.
Technically, it's a glucose syrup. The cream of tartar does something with the sugar to break the sucrose into glucose. Great job with the video! You got my subscription.
Welcome and thank you!
I was about to say, Where's the corn in that corn syrup? 😉😄
Also showing how to make condensed soups is another one of my go too's...
Wow, corn syrup without the corn.
Useful, cause actual corn syrup is soooooo bad for us.
There is a reason why it is not available in some countries.
Namaste
PS I can make pecan pie again.
Besides being used to make baking powder, cream of tartar is great for cleaning stainless steel pans. My great-grandma used it for that besides making fresh baking powder. I also use it on my aluminum canner lid. It removes the blackened stuff from the canner around the steam spout using an old toothbrush. For my SS pans, it removes the rare stuff that sticks and best of all, it does not scratch.
Here in the States here, they use gmo corn products, not my personal choice to consume. I have made marshmallows with coconut nectar syrup and rice syrup, but never made simple sugar syrup to make them. I'll give this a try the next time I make marshmallows, or "momos" as my daughter used to call them when a toddler. Thank you! I also make a marshmallow recipe, but then add the remaining ingredients for a batch of marshmallow fudge. Much better than the jarred marshmallow creme version. ;)
I love this because I’m allergic to commercial corn syrup. With the simple ingredients in your homemade recipe it is definitely something I can eat!
Hope you enjoy and so glad we could help!
Thanks, needed this corn syrup has gotten expensive, love making my own stuff! 😊
Love this! I never keep corn syrup on hand, so this is great!
Make sure the thermometer is touching the liquid and not the bottom of the pan.
Looking forward to the Graham crackers recipe 😊 that was really easy to make. Blows my mind how easy it is to make most of the stuff you show... makes me wonder why people stopped making it and started buying it. 🤔 ah, well... we will learn again to make it.
Can't wait to see Vanna White. I love a good van conversion. Take good care, Ali & Shawn. Enjoy camping 🏕 😉
Is there a recipe for Graham crackers? I'm Australian and you can't buy them here.
Sooooo many recipes call for them. 🤦🏻♀️
I'm looking forward to the Graham Cracker recipe too. Huge Co. Like Nabisco have way too many unsavory additions that are harmful to our bodies.
You have a new subscriber❣ I love learning how to make my own homemade ingredients 🙆♀️❣
True, we don't have corn syrup in Serbia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
My son has started to make a simple syrup and he uses that and lemon juice and water to make homemade lemonade. I use Caro syrup and maple extract to make pancake syrup. Learning to make more things from scratch to lower the grocery bill.
As a avid vintage pyrex collector, I LOVE your turquoise Pyrex collection or rather what little view I can see!
I love Pyrex. Most I inherited over the years. I have some good ones like the balloon teal set and some other teal ones. What is your favorite?
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa I absolutely love it all, but the blue, pink and the friendship pattern I really like! It reminds me so much of my mother. My mom had the primary color nesting bowls. You're too young to remember "Blue chip stamps" but it was something grocery stores and I think gas stations would give you when you made a purchased. They had little paper books you would paste them in. Blue Chip had a catalog and brick & mortar stores. You would redeem merchandise with x amount of those stamp filled little books. I know it was quite a few books my mom filled to get her "prized" nesting bowls.
I also love thrift store shopping which is how I over the years acquired the way too many pieces I have. But than again can you REALLY have too much Pyrex?😊
I agree you cannot have too much. My mom and grandma used the blue stamps to get glassware. I remember when our local grocery use to do something similar and if you spent a certain amount you got to pick a dish or glass and over time you completed your set.
My primary set I got from my Grandpa when he passed away and when my grandma in law passed we got a bunch that we cherish. I display a few but love to use it daily. It makes me happy to see it. ❤️
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa God bless you! So many times when I'm thrifting I see so many amazing vintage things and can't believe someone in those families didn't keep them to cherish as well. We live in such a "disposable" world. People just don't appreciate things the way of yesterday. It's refreshing to hear you do!
By the way, your channel just randomly came up yesterday. I watched a few of your videos and really like your content. I'm learning so many helpful tips!
I absolutely loved whenever we made little pouches of meals in parchment paper, chunks of carrot celery onions potatoes if you want lay a piece of fish on top or a piece of chicken breast season to your taste, roll up your parchment paper like a pocket stick it in your cast iron and bake it amazing, don't forget to put a little slab of butter or drizzle some olive oil on it.
You can also put them on a cookie sheet and bake.
Love this!
Loved this, thank you !
WOW I ALWAYS THOUGHT THERE WAS CORN IN CORN SYRUP - THANKYOU FOR SHARING GOD BLESS YOU AMEN!
Thank you love your videos
Good to know. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
I love this!!!
Thank you for sharing this !!
Thanks for recipe
Great hint about the water on the aides of the pan! Never heard of that before. Thank you.
Thanks hun
awesome thank you!
You're welcome!
You did it again! I knew there had to be a way to make corn syrup but wasn’t sure how. Thank you so much! I can always count on you. If there is a way, Ali will find it and let us know.
Thank you! Hope you try and love it.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I am excited to make my own corn syrup...Have fun camping....Sherri-Payette Idaho
Great idea! I had no clue! So easy! You got my subscription!
Thanks for the sub!
❤❤
Goodness I'd never dreamed of making my own! You have new sub now. Can't wait for the graham cracker recipe since purchased ones tweak my nut allergy for some reason. Sigh, now you have me wondering if I could turn honey into 'corn syrup" so I'm sure of my recipes.
I have heard of people using honey but I haven’t tried it yet.
Thank you. I have the cream of tartar and I don’t like “corn “ syrup so to speak. This is much better and I can add flavoring if needed like vanilla. I appreciate the info ℹ️! ♥️♥️ will be making. I used to make my own marshmallow fluff, so maybe I’ll try the marshmallows 👍👍
I love your videos!!! Will be doing all you suggest!
Thank you for posting and sharing your videos!! 😃
Subscribing for sure!! 👍👍👍
Awesome! Thank you!
The tartar should keep your sugar from becoming crystallized, it's used in some candy making recipes for that reason.
If anyone had any questions about the pie irons, use, recipes, please just ask here; I'm very happy to help out share! Happy Camping!!
Hi, just discovered your channel, loving your content. New subscriber here from the UK
Welcome!
Hobo dinners beef patties (or favorite meat in a patty) onions potatoes butter salt pepper season to taste) wrapped in foil through in pit fire and let it cook about 30 minutes check for doneness and eat...I would check and pull out of fire with long bbq tongues...
Another recipe:
Yellow squash zucchini squash your favorite cheese I like pepper jack butter onions salt pepper and season ro taste wrapped in foil through in fire for about 10 15 minutes or cook on top of grill for about 12 minutes check for tenderness...
Hey Hey HEY… you’ve hit 3k+! Congrats.
Thank you!!!! I know a few of you have been here since the beginning. ❤️
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa yup. I’m one of the early birds. Lol
Yup! It’s funny there are a few of you if I don’t see comment I start to worry. My hubby even asks about you and one other lady to see if you are okay 😂
As an added note you can make sugar wax that is pliable with a bit of lemon juice, you must take into consideration altitude….. just a note
I'm so happy I found your channel....can't wait to learn more pantry staples
I wonder if we could make a syrup with Coconut Sugar?????
I bet you could. I have a bunch I’ll have to give it a try.
well when I got camping i make breakfast burrito that are good all day and also crunch wraps and i pack bread and lunch meat and cheese but for most I make stuff I can have in foil and I can warm on fire or grill and eat, I know lots cook all kinds of thing but the less dishes and food to keep cold the better, now if get to buy a small camper so i put thing in it make easyer for me then I might think some more then what take now also i new to your channel
Welcome!
Simple syrup
Because you boil it to soft ball stage it is technically cane syrup which can be used the exact same way and corn syrup.
Australia does not have it. Being American, makes cooking my usual recipes hard. Velveeta is another of a thousand things I miss from home.
Velveeta would be a good one to try to make. Welcome!
I have made it once, not too difficult.
Can other sugars be used like sucanat or coconut sugar?
I’m working on a version with coconut sugar soon!
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa
Ok, thank you. I can't eat white sugar.
I don't have a hob so can this be done in a microwave
I don’t think it can since it needs consistent heat. What about a hot plate?
Can you used it to make peanut brittle?
You can use it the same as corn syrup.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa Thank you.
You put sugar water, something plus salt, I didn't understand the third ingredient. What was it..
Hit the description and the full recipe with measurements is there.
My mom made the best fried bread on the camp stove. . . Just butter and fry
Yum!
Can you use it in candy making
Sure can!
Is this known as inver syrup? Also not readily available in Us?
I’m honestly not sure.
Except it is not corn syrup.
It’s technically cane syrup but cane be used the same ways.
Yeah, we're growing a lot of corn this year and I thought it was actually how to make corn syrup.
Lol
Potato patato, simple syrup with a shot of cream of tartar
@@kimm59 you're right. Simple syrup, not corn syrup.
Good video, just not what I was looking for. I already know how to make simple syrup.
I shall try another search lol
It kinda reminds me of the lady I saw who made apple cider vinegar... without apple cider. At least it used apples, though 😂
@@kimm59 Yup, not disputing this. Corn syrup has many characteristics that are different from simple syrup made from regular table sugar.
Had to laugh my ass off!!! We don’t have any pets as a little black dog walks under your feet 😂🤣😂
For books... Jana De Leon. Fortune Redding mysteries
Thanks!
So let me tell you about me just a little, I am a 55 year old guy, I cook I bake I can I garden I am a pit master and I can build you a house or fix you older car so that is me so nice to meet you
Glad to meet you!
Where is the corn?
Can you make dark corn syrup?
Hmm, I bet if you use brown sugar that would be it. I’ll have to try it.
Add molasses syrup brown sugar is white sugar and molasses in it (thank u it is molasses)
@@joekeyser1891 No, brown sugar has molasses in it, not maple syrup.
@@joekeyser1891 It can be made with maple syrup but molasses is more common actually.
Dark corn syrup is regular corn syrup with a bit of molasses added to it. It doesn't take very much molasses, so add just a small amount of molasses.
WHAT -- do i really need to rewind the video to hear your Children are 18 and over now.. WHAT -- STUNNED --- is it homemade food or do you have secret skin care ?
Ha ha, yes the baby is 18 and the oldest is almost 27. We started our family at 18. Thanks and if you saw me up close you may say differently 😂
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa I hope so - or else life is really on fair haha
The reason you can get it here and not other Countries is because they actually ban GMOs
Really?
You can make it from corn cobs
I read that and may try it this summer when we get corn on sale.
I need my liver
Corn syrup is probably the most filthy and unhealthy ingredient you can put into your body!
Happy to see a homemade version can be made.
At least it only has the sugar in it.
I agree! I’m glad I know what is in it but I don’t use it often.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa Seed oils like Canola etc come a close second.
Anyway, you scored yourself a new subscriber...
New subscriber here. Totally agree. Put things up and clean as you go was how my daddy taught me. He said " Everything has a place, and every place has a thing." I don't spend a lot of time cleaning using his mantra of "clean as you go".
Saves so much time later. When my kids cook and don’t use this method it stresses me out 😂
Well.i mean great job but this is not corn syrup. It's just a thickened simple syrup
It is cane syrup but since it is thicker it can be used the same in all recipes that use corn syrup.
well im sure its healthier than what they make and give to us, but why spend the time and effort to make something we know is toxic to the body and mind?
Sometimes you just need a little corn syrup in your life. We don’t use it often but we had a need.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa thank you just curious. Im a little more 'nit picky' since i have epilepsy. i had to reserch insulin resistance alot. sorry if rude
