I hope the future of this field becomes more populated with your personal whole person approach. Of the dozen or so I've dealt with there are some basic getting to know you efforts...but it stops there and medication becomes the relationship. In my case the introduction to the mental health care system was extremely cold and heavy handed. My nervous breakdown may have been caused by a set of irrational thinking patterns left unchecked. However in my case I wasn't a threat to myself or anyone until backed into a corner and judged like a wild animal. Then since I could no longer do the flight or freeze response the panic to protect myself kicked in and I acted out. Likely if the evaluating health care person showed some concern or at least a little empathy I would hopefully have been able to feel safe. Not knowing me at all or even asking me what I had been through recently...I feel I was treated like a inconvenience... a set of book based symptoms no longer a complex human with unique psychology. The trauma and forced medication was the sledge hammer that destroyed the butterly...so to speak. Then I could not leave without a label and lost identity. They branded me like cattle and left me to live the last 23 years medicated and lost...at least I would have liked them to get to know me enough to point me in a useful direction as far as therapy goes for the trauma they put me through. There was a reason I feel down mentally but they had no time to ask why.
Thank you for sharing your experience so openly. It’s disturbing to hear how you felt mistreated and dehumanized by the mental health care system. Unfortunately, your story highlights a significant issue in the field: the need for a more holistic, empathetic approach that goes beyond just prescribing medication. It's essential for mental health professionals to see and understand the person behind the symptoms. Your experience underscores the importance of building a genuine connection, showing empathy, and taking the time to understand each individual's unique circumstances. No one should feel like an inconvenience or be reduced to a set of symptoms. Everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and treated with compassion and respect. Thank you again for your candidness. I sincerely hope you can find a path forward where the things that you’ve been through are a part of your story but don’t define you or limit your beliefs about yourself.
@@JeffreyKnuppelMD Thank you for your reply:) I am currently learning about Nancy Mcwilliams works... The influence of individual differences on the psychotherapeutic process is immense. Research shows that personality factors and relational systems have a greater impact on the outcome of psychotherapy than the theoretical model or type of treatment chosen. To enable you to customize psychotherapy to the learning styles and unique characteristics of your clients, Dr. McWilliams provides crucial information for a detailed understanding of personality. She delves into aspects such as temperament, attachment style, various defensive organizations, motivational systems, different levels of severity, core conflicts, relational patterns, and the maintenance of self-esteem. Additionally, she offers key guidelines for engaging with personalities exhibiting borderline, psychotic, depressive, and schizoid traits, in a sophisticated training that is nonetheless accessible to all psychotherapists.
@jasonrambler I also had the same experience just recently as last week and the last few months with my Psychologist here in Australia! I'm just a darn number with them if you read my above post . there just isn't any caring or compassion at all. I know they have to switch off but what happened to me is just disgusting also !
What about a psychiatrist who takes days to respond to texts?sometimes I’ll need a refill and I don’t hear back until I send a second reminder. What is the protocol for responding to messages? 24 hours?
You should clarify with the psychiatrist how they want you to request refills and how soon you should be able to expect a reply. There isn’t a universal protocol. Your requests shouldn’t be ignored though. But I believe it’s best to openly discuss things like this if they don’t tell you upfront.
@@JeffreyKnuppelMD would this apply to a psychologist as well Dr Jeffrey? My psychologist I found I was doing all the talking and she was not really offering me any solutions apart from TH-cam links and a few links from the internet. I have just been dumped due to my health care plan running out in Australia. Our Government gives us 10 free medicare sessions per Year. The provider she works for did not tell her my sessions starting from September 2023 would not roll over into 2024. I got my new Mental Health care plan in April 2024 used up my 6 sessions then you're supposed to get another one for 4 more. I got a text last week to say all my plan was used up for the year and my psychologist did not tell me and cancelled my next 4 sessions. I know you dont know Australian law but she has basically just dumped me with no support left now and no duty of care to give me any other options for on going support when she knew I needed them, and with each session I would check how many I had left so as to stretch them out!! It's actually sent my progress backwards now and she doesn't care. I was just a number to her. So i have lodged a complaint with the Health ombudsmen here now due to them not advising me or being transparent with me. Don't they have a duty of care and take some sort of oath to do no harm as in Doctors ?? I'm more upset that there was no compassion. And now if i do find someone else ((IF)) I have to go through this all again. All up I had 16 sessions. was supposed to have 20 . It's just the lack of compassion and I also felt as though she wasn't listening to me. How am i supposed to trust another psychologist after this awful treatment ? We put our trust into these professionals. I couldnt answer reply last night at it was 1am here in the morning
Yes, it would apply to a psychologist as well (minus the points about medication as most psychologists in the world do not prescribe medication). I'm sorry to hear how horrible your experience has been with your psychologist and healthcare system. I hope you find a way to get care in the future and with someone who is more compassionate.
