I remember growing up in D.C. and my father would say, there only about 10 cities you can live in as a Black person. That was in the 1970's. It has always been bad. I will retire abroad.
African Americans looking for affordable housing, access to healthcare and an active lifestyle should consider retiring abroad to Mexico (yes, really), Ecuador, Portugal and Montenegro. They all also have a simple path to permanent residency through a retirement visa. And Mexico and Portugal are a nonstop flight back to the US. I spend half the year in Mexico now, and it's really the total package.
The best way is to invest in property in a neighborhood that isn’t gentrified. (Generally in NE/SE DC) then rent it out and let it appreciate in value until you are ready to retire. DC is still the best location for minorities. You can find a job easily.

Ummmm, I'm originally from Pittsburgh, Pa and have been living in Harrisburg, Pa for the last 20+ years, and I'm here to tell you that Harrisburg IS NOT a place you want to spend your retirement. Kids and grandkids are the only reason I've been here this long. I'm eligible for retirement in less than a year and believe me when I tell you that I will be leaving Harrisburg with the quickness!!!!!
Check out NC around the Outerbanks. Its nice and a good place ot retire. My parents left Pennsylvania in the 90s and retired near Elizabeth City NC good place to live.
I actually live in Pittsburgh I've been to Harrisburg a few times and I can't imagine it being a good place to retire for anybody but hey what do I do whatever happened to Miami Beach
It is if you have money - lol. I dated a much older man who was well off who lived in Downtown Philly. Wow. The food, nightlife, culture, etc is excellent. Where things will get rough is if you don't have the money to retire there. I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy.
Damn if this is our top 12 we are in trouble. I appreciate the effort but not feeling the list. Its really hard for us to find true happiness. Best way is to just carve you a niche wherever that may be and try to create and find peace. God bless you family
I will retire in the Washington DC Metropolitan "Area" and the Atlanta Metropolitan "area" other than these two locations...I have no desire to retire in the United States of America at all...I am looking at retiring in a predominantly "Black Race/Afro Diaspora" populated country, be it in the continent of Afrika or a country else where in "The Americas"

This may be true...HOWEVER! You will still have locals who will not like you due to classism. I have been speaking with some of the Nigerians etc, and they’re complaining about us Black Americans being able to move there and live comfortably. They said they are hoping we can bring “resources “ and increase the value by living there, but instead they feel some of us are “taking the resources.”

I was born and raise in DC and still live in the area. You would be better off living in the Maryland Counties (Prince George's, Montgomery) closest to DC. Great schools/neighborhoods and way more affordable then DC. Enjoy DC without the DC price.

I enjoy the burbs for shopping but that’s about it but people do love living outside of the city for the space and slower space. It’s the best of both worlds for people coming to the DMV.
I was born in DC as well but move about 2 hrs south in VA when I was around 3 or 4. I like VA because it is close to DC, about 90 minutes from Richmond VA. My wife doesn't like cold weather so we've considered moving further south but we love the house we're in so I don't know
Since, this is a retirement list, it's crazy that they didn't list more cities in states with no/low state income tax or sales tax. Kinda hard to enjoy retirement if you are bleeding money while trying not to get shot by the po-po.
There is a difference between “retiring” and “living on Social Security” until you die. Obviously, this list is for those who have the money to move to another location in the country and are looking to live out there life with the wealth they have built. Anyone “bleeding for money” will never retire under the elevated definition of the term Retirement that this video speaks to.
@@BlackExcellist thank you for responding. The point of my comment is that there seems to be no variation in the locations in your list. There are many individuals who have pensions, 401K, AND social security who want to keep more of want they have worked to earn. Many of those individuals, my self included, don't want to pay income extra tax, so, we can use the income to enjoy retired life. As many in this comment section have expressed, all of your city selections are east of the Mississippi. Plus, touting the many confederate monuments is not much of a recommendation to convince the Black people I know to want to move there. But, to each their own, I guess.
Why would anyone want to retire in a "Cold Winter" state. There's a reason why Florida is the #1 place for retirees. Cost of living, No state tax, warn annual weather, entertainment, great beaches, like Melbourne, Miami, Siesta Keys, Clearwater, and Daytona, just to name a few. Also great for those who love to cruise. Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral, and FT Lauderdale. I will be moving to Tampa, FL this fall. I'm done with the cold of Northern VA.
That’s a hard pass on these locations. I just retired and have been researching affordable states... my options are too limited in USA. I’m looking outside the USA: Portugal, Panama, Mexico, Belize, anywhere but USA!
Elon Tesla, has regular space flights for those with the funds. The space station has grown considerably holding more astronauts from each continent. They will expand out eventually. Doesn’t appear a fix to heal climate change and the many more earth issues. With my Airman pilots license, I’m gravitating towards being a part on Space X.

I live in Atlanta. When my parents came here in the 1940's as students, they would go to Stone Mountain Park. They would climb the mountain up a mile long trail to the top. They didn't know that the Klan would sometimes burn the cross on top of the mountain at that time. Their classmates would get a big chuckle out of that. "Ya'll didn't know Ku Klux be on the top of that mountain burning crosses?" Anyway, as a young person, I would visit the park and have a good time. Glad they don't let the Klan burn crosses up there anymore. I am 68 yrs old and still enjoy going there. And when this pandemic crisis is over, I plan to go again.

Thank you for your hard work. After reading the comments, the only place I would consider is Greenboro NC. Then somewhere out of the country. When I retire in 3yrs (62) I don't have plans to do much. However I am very concerned about medical and taxes oh and the KKK. I just can't anymore.
We need more choices or we need to express to our youth to plan ahead to train to be builders of their town senior living for its own people. Whites not build with black in mind. It's for their own people's . They may let live there but we won't be as happy as expected.
Better to move outside the USA to places like Panama, Ghana, Costa Rica, Mexico, Portugal, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, etc. Much better quality of life!
Chattanooga is a beautiful place and while it has a decent amount of black folks. It's very much a white city in culture and feel. Anything black is on the hood side and you gotta search them out. Gentrification is huge in this city and your only 40 minutes from some racist back water town. So yeah nooo
At 6:58, that is the fastest I have seen traffic move on I-85. Normally it is standstill traffic, be aware when looking at Atlanta, driving here sucks!

I live in Arizona and my wife and i are retired. I am retired military and also retired from my other job. My wife retired from her job and we are both over 65. All of our kids are grown. Where you retired depends on what you like to do. Many blacks look to live in black neighborhoods but when you travel all over the world you have a different perception on the life style you want to be around.
Agree. Seems to be more of the best places for African Americans in general not necessarily for seniors. No discussion of health care, crime, taxes, employment opportunities for seniors, etc., that is, the important things.
Parts are, but some parts are nice like the SE Quadrant and the outer neighborhoods in the other quadrants. There are some suburbs like Henrietta, Gates, Irondequoit, Chili and Greece have decent sized black populations.

Atlanta is NOT a good city to retire in. Its already too overcrowded that's why traffic is a nightmare! And housing is getting too expensive here and jobs don't pay nearly enough to keep up with the rising costs of living! North Carolina sounds much better for black people!
I know you're right about the traffic in Atlanta because when I live there in the 90's the traffic was horrendous I used to get off work and the traffic was so bad that I could jump out of the car and jump the fence and go to the liquor store and get back in the car would still be only a little bit further than it was when I left. I used to ride to work with the same guys and we'd take turns running to the liquor store at the same spot everyday we can finish at 12 pack by the time we got home like four beers a piece sometimes we'd finish the whole case before we got home s*** that ain't nothing for me the way I used to drink. Shit I used to drink a half a gallon to a gallon of vodka everyday before I finally quit drinking 11 years ago. Yeah anyway
Bill Russell tried it after he retired from the NBA. I don't blame after experiencing all that segregation during his playing days. I think that he went to Liberia, but he came running back to the USA after a while. Compare to the USA, African countries are not better even if you are black.
Replace Chattanooga and put Huntsville Alabama instead. Black people live good there. 30% is black most folks work for government or Nasa. The show love and marriage that's on Oprah's network is about entrepreneur millionaires black couples from Huntsville Alabama.
Saone Dixon I saw this a lot back home in Atlanta. Many people from the A traveled back and forth to Charlotte back in 09-10 and many of them finally moved. They called it “Little Atlanta” like Little 5 points. 💕
It's very nice. I live in Greensboro, which is centrally located to the other cities on the list. Great location. Great job opportunities, reasonable real estate prices. We get four seasons, but not the extreme heat of FL, NV, NM, or AZ, nor do we get the extreme winters of MN, NY, or ND. We don't get blitzed with fires like CA, nor tornadoes and floods like the midwest. We're a bit too far inland to get hit too hard by hurricanes as well.
I grew up in Rochester, currently live in Philly and travel often to H'burg. The Rock is too cold, and lost most of its major corporations years ago, which cost it serious property value. Philly is the nation's largest "poor" city and is going through ugly gentrification as NYC renters move in to buy properties, and of course there's no value for black lives by young black men. One of my sons was shot by two fools last year, and lived but it's changed our tolerance for BoB violence. The stupidity in the violence and looting are obscene. Hburg is home to PA's state capital and nearby are bastions of kkk families. Encourage you to redo this list.
This is for retirement. I grew up in Rochester as well. It's not the best fit young people but for retirement is okay. Cost of living is low and it's a family orientated city.

I am PG County, Maryland born and raised, and later relocated to Montgomery County. The DC-area is one of the few places I feel safe in my skin. I would highly recommend Silver Spring, Maryland, which is rich in cultural diversity.
the problem with DC/PG grew up in DC, family in PG is that what's being missed is that your pensions are taxed; if you're a veteran your pension is taxed; even NY doesn't tax veteran benefits; states like NV, TX and FL don't which is why a lot of professional athletes live in those states. SC, TN and NC don't tax or have very favorable rates,. TX is best for vets; no property taxes, no cost for car registration, no taxes on pensions and plenty of support in terms of hospitals; and if you have kids still in (or you) school, the best Yellow Rose program in the country gets' you access to most univs in state, It is the very best

I am saving every penny and making sure I travel on vacation to seek places to move. This country is out of wack...must be bloodstains in the water from the indigenous and African people that is perishing this territory. As DC native there is no way i would recommend DC as a place to retire due to gentrification, cost of living, and ridiculous growing congestion. I will be retiring in 2024 and have no plans of retiring in DC or the DMV ( DC-MD-VA).
Yes. I live in Virginia. It’s great. It’s very safe. People walk the streets late at night. And always jogging on the streets. People are friendly. It’s very expensive...$3000+ monthly for condo... but you need to have a great job or your own business.

Charlotte NC is a great city whether you are retired or not especially if you work in finance or the banking industry. It’s also a great place to raise a family. I love the Queen City!!

I have love for the Motherland, but it's one thing to get up and go to another place within the US. Taking up residence in an entire continent is an entire level of adjustment. (and, as we know, each country in Africa is entirely different. Whichever route one goes, learn about the environment, culture, etc, and be prepared......!
This list is suspect. As someone who is about to retire there are only 2 cities listed that I would consider retiring to and they are Jacksonville and Augusta. However there are too many other factors that are missing, #1 being how far will my retirement dollars go and #2 the tax benefits. Jacksonville is the only one where my retirement pay isn't taxed. Most of the cities listed are too cold. No one retires to cold weather.

Different cities of Atlanta surrounding like Gwinnett Sandy springs, Covington Warner Robins. College Park Smyrna, Ponce de Leon, Piedmont park, Lithonia GA Are nice places just learn more about cost of living there I lived in these and it was very nice 10years ago but rents depending where you want live can be very low compared to NYC NJ. I'm about to go back down south to GA to settle down. Senior living in North Jersey too expensive. Wait list is 10to 17yrs for Housing authority they say unless you are Hispanic they'll slip you in.
I definitely wouldn't recommend DC, I'm from the DC area and I would recommend moving south and away from the city. The city had high crime and genterfication of communities that aren't worth the money.
Agreed. I'm a Raleigh native but it's getting super expensive now to live here. It's biggest lure during the '90s and '00s was that it was super cheap and affordable. That lure is starting to go away now with housing prices sky rocketing. You can't get a good house around Raleigh below 500K.
You couldn't pay me enough to move to either Augusta or Atlanta. Regardless of how much these cities are hyped up as being "Black Meccas," they're still located in one of the most racist and segregated states in the union. And why are there no western cities on this list? Kansas City, Denver, Phoenix, Albuquerque, and even Las Vegas all fit into these categories.
She’s hilarious, the traffic is horrible here, I can’t ever move back to Norcross, Ga to much traffic over populated. I’ve been in ga my whole life and I’m sick of it no matter what county it keeps growing and they’re a joke about rent for apartments like 1,000 for a one bedroom starting. Why pay that much for a apartment and never own it? The traffic is horrible and it’s over populated. I'm thinking the list is for keeping US Blacks near other US Blacks (like most other Races/Heritages do). I'm from Arizona via Mississippi roots (the Valley, which includes Phoenix). There are NO Black Communities here. It's all Native Americans, Whites and Hispanics. Blacks just live within those various Communities. Unfortunately it doesn't work out well in many cases. I'm a witness to that. However, if weather is all one cares about, then yes, Phoenix is OK but is very expensive and soon will be unaffordable.
U have Jacksonville at #1, hell no i lived in Jacksonville 2 yrs ago its the worsest city i ever lived in it looks like one big Garbage Dumpster an its very expensive.
I'm from Augusta and I approve our spot on the list. Crime is about average but prices are below average, (unfortunately income is also slightly below average). Weather is seasonally warm and outdoor activities are plentiful.
Hard No to Chattanooga Tn! As a native Chattanoogan, this city is not for retiring African Americans. It is a very beautiful and scenic city, however very racist and very minimal black owned businesses. Cost of living rising as far as rent and buying a home. Much poverty and CRIME! You would need to move in the rural counties to have a nice community unless you move in the downtown area which is very costly and not designed for AA. All AA owned businesses that were historical landmarks have now closed or moved due to gentrification...
Washington, D.C.????!!!! Hell no! That's "Murder Capital"! I had lived in Arlington, VA (a suburb of DC), and D.C. is NOT a place to live! Philly is also out of the question. :-/
The Caribbean is a very expensive place to retire and if you do find a country not on the Hurricane belt then you may be lacking most of the infrastructure you are used to in US. I am from Barbados and I am looking at Costa Rica, Spain, Portugal or Panama to retire. Island living is great for the rich or a vacation.

First of all, I'd like to commend you on the breath of information in this video. I thought the presentation and delivery of the information was excellent. I'm talking about the production quality. If the title was great relocation destinations for African Americans, I think it would still be a little controversial but somewhat better conceived. On the content side, it didn't identify any special services offered for retirees or tax advantages as mentioned at the beginning of the video. There was nothing about senior housing for example. I moved to Atlanta two years ago even though I drive I was shocked to discover there are no free senior public transportation cards (it isn't to my way of thinking a senior-friendly environment)...so in this way the video was slightly off the mark. I would have also wanted to hear about neighbors to target as a black retiree where I would find others like myself. Could you put together a video on the 10 best places in Florida for blacks to retire...this is the information I'm trying to find. I believe you put a lot of time and work into this production and I'd like to thank you for your efforts to bring good information to your audience. Much appreciated.
I agree on your selection however the only draw back on all of these southern states is the politics and a group of people who want to return this region back to The Bell of the South…!

I used to live in Greensboro and often think of going back.. and I considered going to college in Chattanooga so those are cities I would consider although retirement is a long time away for me but I thank you for the information !!!
I’m interested to know... without using this criteria what cities our people think about retiring to because my number 1 would not even be in the United States. Puerto Viejo, Limon, Costa Rica and Panama City, Panama are at the top of my list
Stick with Panama. Costa Rica is not as safe anymore, especially Limón/PV. Too many gringos in C.R. as well. Costa Rica has has gotten a lot more expensive. The only place to avoid living in Panama is Colon. Bocas del Toro is nice. If you want a cooler place, check out Chiriqui. Panamá City is VERY cosmopolitan and obviously more expensive to live than say Boquete or David. Panama is on the dollar unlike Costa Rica. Panama has a great "pensionado" program.
Think again on Panama and Puerto Rico where hurricane caused many homes disaster points. Weather conditions earthquake areas must be considered too. It's probably cheaper to move to Haiti.. after the Earthquake. But I'm not sure about that place I'm look into it. Voodoo country what shies me away from there.
As a Philadelphia, PA born native recommending Philly as a retirement city for Blacks my spin is just ask the Black retirees that live in Philadelphia, PA. I recommend getting on the #61 bus and ride from one end of the route to the other as a Black at any age. The route #61 bus goes from 9th & Market downtown to Manayunk and take yourself through a teachable moment. Take the #23 bus from the beginning of the route in South Philadelphia to the end of the route in Chestnut Hill and take yourself through a teachable moment and then determine if you want to live in Philly for retirement. Yes, the beer gardens are there; just observe the patrons. Yes, Philly has very scenic places. In fact, the mural being displayed is in a gentrified area. Fairmount, Fishtown, and Olde City I would not recommend as a retirement place for Blacks as both are and have been gentrified. Chestnut Hill is nice but you must have deep pockets and Chestnut Hill is in its own space. Manayunk, East Falls, and Roxborough to my knowledge have never been geared towards Blacks period. These areas have large homes but again that #61 bus ride along with the #9 and #27, riding from beginning to end will give you an analysis of the area and a teachable moment. That is if you don’t mind riding public transit. Also, there are large homes all over Philadelphia. Go to www.septa.org/ to get a SEPTA Key Card to ride the various bus routes. Now the food is good in Philly and I do miss it. As of this comment I am a Baltimore, MD resident. When I do go back to Philly when I can I go to my favorite spots. The cost of living is good in Philly and not as high as Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and New York.
@@martincruz8319The Charm Card is one option used in Baltimore. There is the Day pass, Weekly, and Monthly pass. Along with the option of using a debit card or cash. Usually the Charm is used for those going between Baltimore and D.C.
As long as it has four seasons, no earthquakes, tornadoes, mudslides, hurricanes, extreme heat or humidity, snakes, alligators, I might as well stay in BUFFALO, NY! I love it.
Most of these places are unaffordable for retirement. Big cities are great if you have the money, but please do better on your research to reach your average retirees.

African Americans looking for affordable housing, access to healthcare and an active lifestyle should consider retiring abroad to Mexico (yes, really), Ecuador, Portugal and Montenegro. They all also have a simple path to permanent residency through a retirement visa. And Mexico and Portugal are a nonstop flight back to the US.
I spend half the year in Mexico now, and it's really the total package.

The best way is to invest in property in a neighborhood that isn’t gentrified. (Generally in NE/SE DC) then rent it out and let it appreciate in value until you are ready to retire. DC is still the best location for minorities. You can find a job easily.

Ummmm, I'm originally from Pittsburgh, Pa and have been living in Harrisburg, Pa for the last 20+ years, and I'm here to tell you that Harrisburg IS NOT a place you want to spend your retirement. Kids and grandkids are the only reason I've been here this long. I'm eligible for retirement in less than a year and believe me when I tell you that I will be leaving Harrisburg with the quickness!!!!!
Check out NC around the Outerbanks. Its nice and a good place ot retire. My parents left Pennsylvania in the 90s and retired near Elizabeth City NC good place to live.

I have been speaking with some of the Nigerians etc, and they’re complaining about us Black Americans being able to move there and live comfortably. They said they are hoping we can bring “resources “ and increase the value by living there, but instead they feel some of us are “taking the resources.”

I was born and raise in DC and still live in the area. You would be better off living in the Maryland Counties (Prince George's, Montgomery) closest to DC. Great schools/neighborhoods and way more affordable then DC. Enjoy DC without the DC price.

I enjoy the burbs for shopping but that’s about it but people do love living outside of the city for the space and slower space. It’s the best of both worlds for people coming to the DMV.

Since, this is a retirement list, it's crazy that they didn't list more cities in states with no/low state income tax or sales tax.
Kinda hard to enjoy retirement if you are bleeding money while trying not to get shot by the po-po.
There is a difference between “retiring” and “living on Social Security” until you die. Obviously, this list is for those who have the money to move to another location in the country and are looking to live out there life with the wealth they have built. Anyone “bleeding for money” will never retire under the elevated definition of the term Retirement that this video speaks to.

There are many individuals who have pensions, 401K, AND social security who want to keep more of want they have worked to earn. Many of those individuals, my self included, don't want to pay income extra tax, so, we can use the income to enjoy retired life. As many in this comment section have expressed, all of your city selections are east of the Mississippi. Plus, touting the many confederate monuments is not much of a recommendation to convince the Black people I know to want to move there. But, to each their own, I guess.

Why would anyone want to retire in a "Cold Winter" state. There's a reason why Florida is the #1 place for retirees. Cost of living, No state tax, warn annual weather, entertainment, great beaches, like Melbourne, Miami, Siesta Keys, Clearwater, and Daytona, just to name a few. Also great for those who love to cruise. Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral, and FT Lauderdale. I will be moving to Tampa, FL this fall. I'm done with the cold of Northern VA.

I live in Atlanta. When my parents came here in the 1940's as students, they would go to Stone Mountain Park. They would climb the mountain up a mile long trail to the top. They didn't know that the Klan would sometimes burn the cross on top of the mountain at that time. Their classmates would get a big chuckle out of that. "Ya'll didn't know Ku Klux be on the top of that mountain burning crosses?"
Anyway, as a young person, I would visit the park and have a good time.
Glad they don't let the Klan burn crosses up there anymore. I am 68 yrs old and still enjoy going there. And when this pandemic crisis is over, I plan to go again.

After reading the comments, the only place I would consider is Greenboro NC. Then somewhere out of the country. When I retire in 3yrs (62) I don't have plans to do much. However I am very concerned about medical and taxes oh and the KKK. I just can't anymore.
Yes that's the other issue is living in these spaces even independent or senior living homes with KKK minded people would be a disaster.

I live in Arizona and my wife and i are retired. I am retired military and also retired from my other job. My wife retired from her job and we are both over 65. All of our kids are grown. Where you retired depends on what you like to do. Many blacks look to live in black neighborhoods but when you travel all over the world you have a different perception on the life style you want to be around.

I know you're right about the traffic in Atlanta because when I live there in the 90's the traffic was horrendous I used to get off work and the traffic was so bad that I could jump out of the car and jump the fence and go to the liquor store and get back in the car would still be only a little bit further than it was when I left.
I used to ride to work with the same guys and we'd take turns running to the liquor store at the same spot everyday we can finish at 12 pack by the time we got home like four beers a piece sometimes we'd finish the whole case before we got home s*** that ain't nothing for me the way I used to drink.
Shit I used to drink a half a gallon to a gallon of vodka everyday before I finally quit drinking 11 years ago.

I saw this a lot back home in Atlanta. Many people from the A traveled back and forth to Charlotte back in 09-10 and many of them finally moved. They called it “Little Atlanta” like Little 5 points. 💕
It's very nice. I live in Greensboro, which is centrally located to the other cities on the list. Great location. Great job opportunities, reasonable real estate prices. We get four seasons, but not the extreme heat of FL, NV, NM, or AZ, nor do we get the extreme winters of MN, NY, or ND. We don't get blitzed with fires like CA, nor tornadoes and floods like the midwest. We're a bit too far inland to get hit too hard by hurricanes as well.

I grew up in Rochester, currently live in Philly and travel often to H'burg. The Rock is too cold, and lost most of its major corporations years ago, which cost it serious property value. Philly is the nation's largest "poor" city and is going through ugly gentrification as NYC renters move in to buy properties, and of course there's no value for black lives by young black men. One of my sons was shot by two fools last year, and lived but it's changed our tolerance for BoB violence. The stupidity in the violence and looting are obscene. Hburg is home to PA's state capital and nearby are bastions of kkk families. Encourage you to redo this list.

I am PG County, Maryland born and raised, and later relocated to Montgomery County. The DC-area is one of the few places I feel safe in my skin. I would highly recommend Silver Spring, Maryland, which is rich in cultural diversity.
the problem with DC/PG grew up in DC, family in PG is that what's being missed is that your pensions are taxed; if you're a veteran your pension is taxed; even NY doesn't tax veteran benefits; states like NV, TX and FL don't which is why a lot of professional athletes live in those states. SC, TN and NC don't tax or have very favorable rates,. TX is best for vets; no property taxes, no cost for car registration, no taxes on pensions and plenty of support in terms of hospitals; and if you have kids still in (or you) school, the best Yellow Rose program in the country gets' you access to most univs in state, It is the very best

As DC native there is no way i would recommend DC as a place to retire due to gentrification, cost of living, and ridiculous growing congestion. I will be retiring in 2024 and have no plans of retiring in DC or the DMV ( DC-MD-VA).

Yes. I live in Virginia. It’s great. It’s very safe. People walk the streets late at night. And always jogging on the streets. People are friendly. It’s very expensive...$3000+ monthly for condo... but you need to have a great job or your own business.
I'm in the 757 always wanted to move to the DMV I love seeing my successful black ppl in that area but I can't lie we're growing out here too Ive been seeing a lot more black business owvers

Charlotte NC is a great city whether you are retired or not especially if you work in finance or the banking industry. It’s also a great place to raise a family. I love the Queen City!!

You’ll should invest in Africa (ie buy a house, land, business) first go visit East Africa, west Africa then south..... and pick a location to invest in!
I have love for the Motherland, but it's one thing to get up and go to another place within the US. Taking up residence in an entire continent is an entire level of adjustment. (and, as we know, each country in Africa is entirely different. Whichever route one goes, learn about the environment, culture, etc, and be prepared......!

This list is suspect. As someone who is about to retire there are only 2 cities listed that I would consider retiring to and they are Jacksonville and Augusta. However there are too many other factors that are missing, #1 being how far will my retirement dollars go and #2 the tax benefits. Jacksonville is the only one where my retirement pay isn't taxed. Most of the cities listed are too cold. No one retires to cold weather.
i was considering jville but the housing was dismal, arts scene okay, and getting around in traffic not for me. so this floridian is saying bye to the sunshine state.

I definitely wouldn't recommend DC, I'm from the DC area and I would recommend moving south and away from the city. The city had high crime and genterfication of communities that aren't worth the money.

Agreed. I'm a Raleigh native but it's getting super expensive now to live here. It's biggest lure during the '90s and '00s was that it was super cheap and affordable. That lure is starting to go away now with housing prices sky rocketing. You can't get a good house around Raleigh below 500K.
You couldn't pay me enough to move to either Augusta or Atlanta. Regardless of how much these cities are hyped up as being "Black Meccas," they're still located in one of the most racist and segregated states in the union. And why are there no western cities on this list? Kansas City, Denver, Phoenix, Albuquerque, and even Las Vegas all fit into these categories.
The USA will never be safe for us, or any racist white country for that matter. We need to return to the homeland in Africa.

Why pay that much for a apartment and never own it? The traffic is horrible and it’s over populated.

I'm thinking the list is for keeping US Blacks near other US Blacks (like most other Races/Heritages do).
I'm from Arizona via Mississippi roots (the Valley, which includes Phoenix). There are NO Black Communities here. It's all Native Americans, Whites and Hispanics. Blacks just live within those various Communities. Unfortunately it doesn't work out well in many cases. I'm a witness to that.
However, if weather is all one cares about, then yes, Phoenix is OK but is very expensive and soon will be unaffordable.
Kansas City is segregated as well in the suburbs and the better the housing the least you run into your own. I can’t wait to be gone from here.

If you want to retire with reasonable income, come to Huntsville,AL. The city is only a drive away from Atlanta Birmingham, Memphis,and Nashville.
I'm from Augusta and I approve our spot on the list. Crime is about average but prices are below average, (unfortunately income is also slightly below average). Weather is seasonally warm and outdoor activities are plentiful.

Hard No to Chattanooga Tn! As a native Chattanoogan, this city is not for retiring African Americans. It is a very beautiful and scenic city, however very racist and very minimal black owned businesses. Cost of living rising as far as rent and buying a home. Much poverty and CRIME! You would need to move in the rural counties to have a nice community unless you move in the downtown area which is very costly and not designed for AA. All AA owned businesses that were historical landmarks have now closed or moved due to gentrification...

The Caribbean is a very expensive place to retire and if you do find a country not on the Hurricane belt then you may be lacking most of the infrastructure you are used to in US. I am from Barbados and I am looking at Costa Rica, Spain, Portugal or Panama to retire. Island living is great for the rich or a vacation.

First of all, I'd like to commend you on the breath of information in this video. I thought the presentation and delivery of the information was excellent. I'm talking about the production quality. If the title was great relocation destinations for African Americans, I think it would still be a little controversial but somewhat better conceived. On the content side, it didn't identify any special services offered for retirees or tax advantages as mentioned at the beginning of the video. There was nothing about senior housing for example. I moved to Atlanta two years ago even though I drive I was shocked to discover there are no free senior public transportation cards (it isn't to my way of thinking a senior-friendly environment)...so in this way the video was slightly off the mark. I would have also wanted to hear about neighbors to target as a black retiree where I would find others like myself. Could you put together a video on the 10 best places in Florida for blacks to retire...this is the information I'm trying to find. I believe you put a lot of time and work into this production and I'd like to thank you for your efforts to bring good information to your audience. Much appreciated.

I lived And been to a lot of these cities I wouldn’t move back to Philly if y’all paid me. I used to live in Greensboro and often think of going back.. and I considered going to college in Chattanooga so those are cities I would consider although retirement is a long time away for me but I thank you for the information !!!

Stick with Panama. Costa Rica is not as safe anymore, especially Limón/PV. Too many gringos in C.R. as well. Costa Rica has has gotten a lot more expensive.
The only place to avoid living in Panama is Colon. Bocas del Toro is nice. If you want a cooler place, check out Chiriqui. Panamá City is VERY cosmopolitan and obviously more expensive to live than say Boquete or David. Panama is on the dollar unlike Costa Rica. Panama has a great "pensionado" program.
Think again on Panama and Puerto Rico where hurricane caused many homes disaster points. Weather conditions earthquake areas must be considered too.
It's probably cheaper to move to Haiti.. after the Earthquake. But I'm not sure about that place I'm look into it. Voodoo country what shies me away from there.
I’d say Portugal for outside the states
As a Philadelphia, PA born native recommending Philly as a retirement city for Blacks my spin is just ask the Black retirees that live in Philadelphia, PA. I recommend getting on the #61 bus and ride from one end of the route to the other as a Black at any age. The route #61 bus goes from 9th & Market downtown to Manayunk and take yourself through a teachable moment. Take the #23 bus from the beginning of the route in South Philadelphia to the end of the route in Chestnut Hill and take yourself through a teachable moment and then determine if you want to live in Philly for retirement.
Yes, the beer gardens are there; just observe the patrons. Yes, Philly has very scenic places. In fact, the mural being displayed is in a gentrified area.
Fairmount, Fishtown, and Olde City I would not recommend as a retirement place for Blacks as both are and have been gentrified. Chestnut Hill is nice but you must have deep pockets and Chestnut Hill is in its own space.
Manayunk, East Falls, and Roxborough to my knowledge have never been geared towards Blacks period. These areas have large homes but again that #61 bus ride along with the #9 and #27, riding from beginning to end will give you an analysis of the area and a teachable moment. That is if you don’t mind riding public transit.
Also, there are large homes all over Philadelphia. Go to www.septa.org/ to get a SEPTA Key Card to ride the various bus routes.
Now the food is good in Philly and I do miss it. As of this comment I am a Baltimore, MD resident. When I do go back to Philly when I can I go to my favorite spots. The cost of living is good in Philly and not as high as Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and New York.
The "Charm" Card is actually the fare card used in Baltimore. The transit card in Philadelphia is the "Key" Card. The keyword is "Key".

Usually the Charm is used for those going between Baltimore and D.C.

Most of these places are unaffordable for retirement. Big cities are great if you have the money, but please do better on your research to reach your average retirees.
