I would rank 08th MS Team as the best Gundam series. It's short enough not to lose focus, it has interesting characters and mech designs, and the battles were carefully crafted. Most Gundam series is just some level of mechs duking it out. While cool to watch, they don't really do anything. But Norris Packard with the Gouf Custom is a god in this series. Every fight scene he has shows how much of an Ace pilot he is. And not just Ace in terms of his piloting skills. He literally has the entire battlefield in the palm of his hand and never loses sight of the objective. He still makes the battle look cool, but he doesn't make any wasted movements, everything he does bring himself one step closer to victory. He's the exemplar but most of the pilots in the series are also thinking soldiers in the series, and show some level of competence at tactics.
Yea the fire team tactics, the heft each machine exhibits, and the moral grey lines 08th ms team have to cross back and forth make this the best gundam for me personally. The sick zeon suits and Norris Packard are just the fucking icing on the cake, absolutely beautiful mecha anime

In Shiro's defense, he literally thought he was going to die and had about 2 seconds left to do something meaningful in his life. Up to this point, he'd been spending pretty much is entire time with a bunch of guys (and one really badass lady) in a jungle, with his curiosity and feelings about this woman and their unique life and death experience together, percolating. So it's not entirely surprising to me that he'd blurt out something simple and direct like "I love you".

One thing I loved about 08th is EVERY character has some weakness. And it's usually a good one. Like Karen afraid of airdropping. Also, seeing Dell talking to the little kid bringing him food in a kind voice with just a picture of what you presume to be his child next to him. Good visual storytelling without a damn word.
Also, they could have condensed Miller's Report into a single episode's run time, aired it in proper sequence and that last episode wouldn't have been necessary.
the Best Gundam Series and the MOST REALISTIC GUNDAM WAR ever without Newtype Crap, Super Advanced Technology, Telepathy Sixth Sense Bullshit and Weaponry and just a Plain Good Old Tactical Warfare, Guerilla War in Jungle, Strategy of Overcoming the odds
I'm pretty sure the last episode was a special that was released later. I used to rent this from Hollywood and the entire series only ended at 11, with Aina and Shiro leaving the room. Had to search online for the last one much later, as well as the bridge battle short
I love 08th MS Team! Agreed, the last ep is really odd and a little too much "tell" when you ended it perfectly the ep before with "show". I feel like it was some additional commentary on Nam and the next gen but still not sure. I actually thought this was one of the better romances in Gundam because it made it kind of clear from the beginning that something was going on. But I think the real purpose behind it all and why it was important to the story was because it helped break down their close-minded perceptions of the enemy, which was fostered by the propoganda their side had been putting on (as Shiro had shown to eat up prior, and then throughout the show he gains more humanity, while Aina was being fed everything by her bro). I watch the Norris fight at least once a year lol but also the bridge fight is super underrated and spectacular. I'd love to see y'all do Turn A one of these days! Among other things, I think that's one Gundam that really does a love story well.
I'm a fan of series that close by leaving the audience with questions. "What's going to happen to Shiro and Aina? Where will they go next?" It creates a lasting impression, sticks in the memory a bit more. That's why I felt the final episode diminished things a bit. It took a strong finale, answered the questions it had left us with arbitrarily, and tried to do an additional storyline with characters we didn't have enough time to really become invested in. Tho I'll grant you, it was nice to see Michel grow some semblance of a spine.
"Bridge over the river kwai" is a Mecha anime if you really think about it. Midway through the coursework for my engineering degree I was obsessed with military ballistic weapons tech and I went about as deep as a person should go on it so now I want to correct a niggling microscopic detail about the military tech in this show: since these are mobile suits made for space or planetary combat they'd have such a degree of mobility that they would need to use cannons like the US 30mm GAU Vulcan cannon from the A10 warthog, in which there are never any ejected cases because ejected cases can foul intakes and control surfaces. So the spent cases just cycle back into the helical ammo drum. Mobile suits don't usually require engine intakes or control surfaces but if they were to eject cases in space or on the planet such cases would quickly become obstacles and dangers for support forces. So mother's getting killed by falling cases is probably too fantastical.
While everyone else binges shows on other platforms, I find myself binging this channel...and Iron Blooded Orphans and Samurai Flamenco and Gundam Thunderbolt and Megalo Box...side note, love your pronunciations, even if they hurt my ears.
the 1 year war was the best storyline, the gundams were fricking awesome too, everything about this show is amazing from the visuals to how the soundtrack adds that epic score to make it even more awesome
The series was so good....except that last episode. I like that they tried to settle things with the characters whose arcs weren't really finished, but they didn't give it enough time. If they wanted to do that plot they needed to give it >1 episode. Michel was my favorite character so i appreciated the final episode just for more of him despite how bad it was >_

nice video i just finished it today and it's really really good i like this more grounded approach better than the epic dumb space fights u got a new sub btw :)
Probably because its such a real take on war. Actually down to earth style of gundam. Ground team has no real super weapons so they gotta fight using tactics and sheer grit and it pays off for the viewer
I really have to disagree with your take on the last episode. While it was entirely unrelated to the rest of the series story wise, I think it was still thematically significant, and I enjoyed the self contained story. They shouldn't have slapped on that end scene with Shiro and Aina
I really enjoyed this show, but I gotta agree that the romance is pretty boring. I love the setting and how it interacts with the robot fights. I will admit, the low episode run time did bother me a bit. I liked the characters, but I wish I had more time with them. Especially Norris who, while having the best character, could have gotten more screentime than just 2 episodes. His commitment to the Zeon girl (I don't remember her name) was really good but it would have been more emotional if we had seen more of it leading up to the best fight in the show. I knew coming in that it would be a short show, but I came out wanting more and feeling like there should have been more. Weirdly enough, I liked the ginger guy (damn I can't remember their names). I loved his dilemma with his girlfriend and the fear that she wouldn't be with him when he came back. It fit well with the show's theme of soldier's personal lives, especially in I believe ep 6 where he got into a fight with Shiro because he couldn't send a letter to his girlfriend. I really didn't like ep 12 because they confirmed his girlfriend left him. The way they portrayed him in that episode came across as the "use a character as a comedic punching bag" trope which I hate in anything. But yeah...ep 12 wasn't that great.
I'm trying to get thru it right now and I usually do dubs... but I'm gonna have to go thru the subs on this the dub needs a redo. It's cringe and problematic to say the least.
