Yeah, thunderbolt is not like your typical mecha anime where two dudes are screaming at each other, it's just one dude screaming in sheer horror while being vaporized by a beam saber and jazz music playing while all of that is happening.
What strikes me the most about thunderbolt is how realistically it treats death in combat. No sad flashback montage. No tearful goodbyes. No time to mourn. One second your buddy was there and now he’s just mist, and you don’t have time to think about it because you’ve gotta get on the ball and shoot back or else you’ll be next.
Thunderbolt is probably the most "realistic" in the franchise when it comes to combat. I like that you brought up how they used the environment instead of just two robots boxing each other and yelling.
I'd say 8th MS Team and War In The Pocket do more realistic battles than Thunderbolt. However, Thunderbolt certainly beats them in the spectacle department.
In my opinion, the ending of December Sky is good because of how Daryl looks at his right arm realizing that he gave up his only arm that he hadn't lost yet in order to defeat the Gundam
Daryl's definitely the more self aware of the two Thunderbolt protagonists. Probably because he has such physical reminders of what the war has done to him.
This is one of those Gundam shows that absolutely nails both 'Cool Robot' and 'War is hell and it'll either kill you or turn you into a monster or broken mess.' The Jazz is smooth and effective, conveying a sense of tension during the fights and I both sort of root for Lo Fleming but also HATE HIM whereas I have nothing but love for Daryl and Doctor Mitchem because GOD they deserve so much better! (I honestly did not expect to cry as I had during the first flashback for Daryl but there ya go) Even seeing Daryl go into the same state of 'LOVING war' as Lo does when he had sortied. Seeing the Child Soldier thing is grim but also even nails down a point even mentioned in episode 1 of MSG: The casualties were such that literal CHILDREN were being sent out there to die.
Bandit flower and december sky were very enjoyable overall. I have given up on my wish that I can watch a gundam series without cringy dialogue. Seems like a staple already.

The problem with thunderbolt its that japanese animation is only allowed a certain amount of episodes this means you have to leave stuff on the cutting room floor. The anime is good and i love it but the manga has alot more in it
I love the series but it has two major problems. One, The series is essentially divided down the middle between the "Thunderbolt Sector" arc and "Operation Thunderbolt" arc, which felt like it could have been two different stories but were shoehorned into each other because they wanted the same character in two different stories. Two, the ONA is done dirty by this because while Season 1 and the Compilation December Sky is a fairly well self-contained narrative, Season 2 and it's compilation movie feels more like an hour-long advertisement for the manga, which means we get a lot of questions, none of it answered, and a bunch of characters that come out of nowhere (cuz the portion of the manga it adapts is literally setting up Operation Thunderbolt).
Personally they should’ve left it one season 1. It’s an absolute masterpiece, however the second season is just build up for the 3rd season which is fine, but if the show is canceled then it’s a waste of time.
The first film/season was definitely the stronger of the two and had the more self-contained arc. But I'll forgive all of season 2's issues cos Bianca.
We Heart Giant Robots if season 3 does happen then hopefully it’ll close the series. However if not then it’ll end up like “Happy!” If you haven’t seen that show then I highly recommend it. The big issue they ran into was that the Thunderbolt manga went on hiatus due to an injury in his dominant hand. He's back at it again, though, so I guess we just gotta cross our fingers and hope Sunrise feels like re-visiting it once Hathaway gets his OVA.
I got the manga, it really gets so much better, the first season covers first 3 volumes and is probably the weakest part of the series. Big Gundam fan and Thunderbolt is one of the coolest. The post war arc is fantastic

Nina Purpleton = Carla, and Thunderbolt has another female Scientist. McGuffin: Stardust Memory -> First Model 2, then Nuclear weapon, Thunderbolt -> Pysco Reuse device. So...Gundam recycles certain elements?
I think the Io/Bianca shipping was a little too perfect. Liek she's clearly the female version of him. Shes an Io clone (not Dio Clone) so I consider her a bit cringy. I'd rather her be uninterested. I think the shortness of the narrative makes it seemed a bit forced. its just my opinion tho.

The jazz both works great with this and sounds good as well, at least to me.
😂😂 thats interesting I like Metallica especially when I was a kid but they are all such trash musicians compared to the best jazz groups. You want to see some of the most balls to the wall drum solos you ever heard listen to Buddy Rich, the craziest, fastest guitar solos Allan Holdsworth, the nastiest bass lines NHOP. The best jazz guys are in a league of their own in what theyre doing. Metallica is a good band though with some great albums and great songs, jazz is just a different animal man, I get not liking it but you gotta respect the total mastery of the instruments that jazz legends possess
@@JeffPenaify yeah their song writing was definitely stronger than their musicianship. Jazz musicians tend to be trained, and Metallica is a bunch of teens making metal music, which is pretty incredible that they’ve made some great albums
