A few points: One thing that always irked me about the OYW is that it’s just one year (less than that actually). Considering how long irl conflicts last between much smaller actors, the engineering and corresponding logistics involved as well as time of travel between theaters the OYW should have lasted much longer. Unnamed Zeon female pilot and her team perfectly illustrate the struggles with Zeon. Honorable soldiers and men fighting for there families forced to fight alongside psychopaths. Shiro flirting with Kiki is sus but war in those circumstances irl definitely had situations like what was portrayed. Admiral badass and Norris need there own ova.
Well, in real life, there have been much shorter wars. Israel had a war called the Six Day War, and it lasted, you guessed it, six days. But Israel over the last 70+ has had conflict after conflict. And in U.C. even after the Federation won the One Year War, there were conflicts with the remnants of Zeon, Neo-Zeon, the Sleeves, and etc. The Israel Six Day War is just one example, but I did a search for "shortest wars" and there's multiple that were under two weeks.
it really makes no sense at all. we're supposed to believe that both sides were able to design and do all the R&D work on all the ships mobile suits and mobile armors and field then them in less than a years' time? I mean come on.
I agree fully that 08th MS team is a Romeo and Juliet story at it's core, only with military factions then noble houses. It has a "This is a war" with people from both sides you can root for and hate for being war criminals, but it also has those light-hearted moments with the MS team the show follows, such as hospitalized teammate requesting his own song and the team laughing over it. I love how it is just one unit out of dozens of others. They're not the 1st or the best, but they come together to get the job done and the ending is probably the one of the most heart-warming to any series or OVA with one of the members tracking down the AWOL commander. The themes _Shine in the Storm_ and _Ten Years After_ are some of my favorites in the franchise. Speaking of fighting games; Hiyama also voices Siegfried in Soul Calibur as well as Link in the game Cube's Soul Calibur II console exclusive fighter as he was OoT's VA.
I remember being in middle school and watching The 8th MS Team on Toonami, being the hopeless romantic I am, the desperation of trying to stop the Apsalus from falling off the mountain and Shiro yelling “I LOVE YOU!! AINA!!!” That stuck with me just as the infatuation from War in The Pocket and Stardust Memory, this story was definitely the best and will always be my favorite
I was looking forward to this and you did not disapoint. 8th Ms team is a turning point for me with my love of gundam. my 1st gundam was gundam wing back on toonami. i loved it when i was a kid, but when i watched 8th ms team, my tastes in mecha were changed. between 8th ms and gasaraki and patlabor, i grew a fascination with more grounded mecha. I love the ground combat, the combined arms warfare, mechs using trees and buildings as cover, and the mostly ranged combat (so it feals like a firefight instead of just giant metal samurai). while there is a kind of cheesy romance plot, its at least not enslaved to the newtype BS of the rest of the franchise (i choose to ignore the last episode of the series. my intros into gundam were 8th and wing, it probably influenced my distaste for newtypes because they simply weren't there to muddle up the war drama. around this same time i would see "war in the pocket", yet another great piece of gundam media. its unfortunate that most of the rest of gundam barely touches these aspects i love so much. I literally hate so many of the tropes that define gundam that were absent of 8th and warpcoket. some of those annoying tropes are in wing, but ive found that the nostalgia goggles expired when i tried watching the series again. it wasn't as great as i remember it being and those tropes dont help (although ill still look at it fondly for introducing me to mecha). I just wish there was less super powers, less moody and whiny kids, less super duper flashy gundams, less space combat, and less melee....which is probably expecting too much form this franchise. But rant aside, i am looking forward to your take on th rest of the OYW.
Why does every single 08th ms team fan always feel the need to crap on the rest of the franchise for not being hyper realistic like 08th ms team? Every single time I swear
08th ms team as gundam Vietnam is because of location and three characters you can see as characters in platoon. The commander is close to lieutenant Wolfe, the private the commander met in space is Charlie sheen's character the new volunteer, and the veteran is Barnes if Barnes kept his cool. Romeo and juliet maybe the source, platoon had some influence.
Ah, yes, I too like to think most of the last episode didn't happen, just the happy ending for Shiro and Aina. That's really the only downside I have the series is that most of that last episode really didn't have a point in relation to the story we'd just went through.
I don’t know what you are talking about the last episode of 08th MA Team was awesome. The Shuddering Mountain Part Two was an excellent ending for the show.
The most underrated gundam imo, the second half was my only gripe with it and it’s great to have that information on the director change, I actually found this through melolink I love the old mobile suit and chars counter attack and I grew up on gundam wing but this series has become my favorite because of the animation style and the attention to detail in the mech sequences, I really wish they had more of a budget for the full 26 episodes this deserves, I will say that the double ending song does bug me but luckily I have the option of skipping ahead
@ it wasn’t that hard, I could name the amount of people who watch enough anime to be considered knowledgeable on one hand who have seen it, in the vast world of gundam universe spanning over 45 years and 37 different series, the amount of people who’ve seen an OVA of a lesser known time period and setting is probably less than say a whole generation of westerners who only watched Wing and G for their first entry
Awesome looking forward covrage of the one year war. Great start with 8th MS team def my fav mainline gundam series Shiro is pretty relatable guy and Norris is a badass. Id love to see stories of underrated MS units likes THE E.F's White Dingo and Zeons Midnight Fenrir.
So will this series be covering just the one year war and if so does the Delaz Conflict/Operation Stardust count as it was carried out by Zeon Veterans and is the bridge between the One Year War and the Gryps Conflict?
13:51 Micah, I think it's spoiler time: SPOILER: In the novelization of the 08th MS Team, Kiki is actually raped by some Federation soldiers and ultimately as a result commits suicide by biting her tongue. I know, it's disgusting and I was shocked that it was written without any a hint or foreshadowing.
I'm aware of it, but didn't wanna go over it because the novelization's not canon. Though, there is a fun fact. The guy who wrote the novelization? He's the writer for The Witch from Mercury.
I thought Brad had 4 roles too; Amuro, Gundam 0079 Quatre, Gundam Wing Setsuna, Gundam 00 Screaming pilot, Gundam seed (I couldn't stomach seed, so idk his characters name)

The e.f.f.s commander he didn’t even care if there was a ceasefire because he was scared being the laughing stock of the e.f.f.s especially he mentions operation star one is getting closer
That's actually a really hard question. Zeon during the war commits SEVERAL genocides, but Griffith during the course of Berserk (along with the Godhand) basically fuck up all of reality. Plus what he did to the Band of the Hawk (and Casca especially) feels a LOT more personal. I'll think about it.
Hope you review L-Gaim one day Micah. Probably because you mentioned it's "Tomino Star Wars". I'd like to hear your opinion on it (watched it myself and loved it). Speaking of 08th, I personally don't like the romance that much. Probably because it's just a bit too melodramatic for my taste. Rest of it was great, would've likely been in my personal top 10 had it not been for the romance.
Amuro was treated well? They literally used him as expendable bait during the war(they didn't care he only lived by chance. His success was a side effect, not the plan) and then put in house arrest after the war because they wanted to study him, but didn't want to risk him POSSIBLY siding against them...just on the basis of him being a newtype.
I adore Gundam. The One Year War and the majority of the content surrounding it I love. Specifically 08th Mobile Suit Team. Through Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon(a game from 2001) is something I played when I was three(when it came out) and thus the One Year War had a special place in my heart.

I've watched this twice, but i could never binge watch it. I dont know what it is exactly, but i don't like it, it's one of my least favorite gundam stories when it comes to characters. The mecha action and Norris Packard is the only saving grace for me. On my rewatch I just kind of put it on the background. Only watching the action. You say its underated, but in the communities I'm in. So many people love it that I think its overrated.
08th ms team is definitely one of the favorite shows of real gundam fans. A show the woke Witch from mercury posers have never seen. LMAO at those fake fans. 🤣🤣🤣
I think its overrated, most "fans" hype about it all the time for it being "grounded" and realistic, People complain about GMs being made out of explodium in other UC shows but the GMs in this show doesnt even make a single kill (except for the sniper one), yet ive never seen someone complain about this. Also shiro amada's plot armor is stronger than ever.
Exaclty. When people glaze 08th ms team not once do they ever talk about the story or characters all they do is circle jerk the animation or how the action is slow paced and heavy for "realism" which apparently makes it better then the rest of the franchise alone. Its all just nostalgia for people who saw it on toonami
I absolutely loathe this Gundam series . The Romero and Juliet plotline was extremely boring also uninteresting. The characters were awful, only characters I liked were Joshua and kiki The character designs were good Overall this is my second most hated Gundam series ever. I think it's a solid 3
8th MS Team is definitely among my favorite Gundam animes. Wish more entries took notes from it.
ok but where dafuck i can see it????

It all depends. The Second Nargorno Karabakh War lasted only 44 days and over 10,000 people died.

Brad swaile played 5 Gundam pilots. Amuro, Quatre, Setsuna, Dearka Wlsman in the first Seed dub, and Auel Nader in the first Seed Destiny dub.
