  • We made a deal!... Bring me a 690 Duke & i'll build you a 690 Adventure (and we'll do a race!) This is me running out of budget building an Adventure out of Duke 690! Even without the full agreed budget... it's still a weapon!

    I just found your channel because I was looking for owner reviews of the Duke 690 which would be something completely different for me. I bought a Himalayan when I moved to rural Powys 2 years ago (previous bike VFR800 so 85bhp drop in power) because I thought I'd enjoy bimbling around local country lanes but have found it's not my thing. Im mainly using the bike to go visit my children in the Midlands so I'm finding the Himalayan frustrating (and potentially dangerous) when trying to overtake traffic doing day 50mph do I thought i need more power but I want something lighter than the VFR with a more upright riding position because I'm 68. Anyway just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your video. It was fun to watch and i was impressed with how you adapted the bike with what you had (and hadn't ie like welding gear). Mike

    Hey great video im building now one as well just like you , 12:00 the speedometer & tcs issue can be fixed if you are using enduro 690 ABS SENSORS and to fix the bolt pattern issue you will have to use enduro 690 wheel hubs. that means u will be building wheel from 0 but you can get customized size...

    • @RideyBikes
      @RideyBikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s a fun build and makes a super fun bike.
      I did use the 690 sensor ring on the back. The front wheel hub was a custom from sm pro but is essentially the same bolt and spoke pattern as the OEM just stronger. It was a custom sensor ring on the front because it’s a 19 inch wheel so the 690 17 or 21 OEM ring would have given the wrong speed reading. The speedo works great and was GPS accurate. The fault was caused by the profile of the 19” tyre being quite tall so compared to the lower (and slightly worn) back profile being just enough of a difference to cause the traction control to engage just a little. I guess that’s the danger of trying to mess with a system that’s designed to engage when the wheels are so much as a tiny fraction off of the same rotational value. New tyre on the back solves all problems. 👍🏽👍🏽

    You can use a vise and a hammer to bend the metal brackets more easily; you can catch it in the jaws of the vise a mm or two higher than the position you want to bend it (depending on the thickness) 😉

      But with spoked wheels. 701 svartpilen would be a great base platform for this kind of conversion. We preferred the duke because of its TFT screen and all the adjustability of the rider modes. IIRC the svartpilen has a less editable set of rider modes and slightly less fuel capacity. 👍🏽

    the Duke is a Supermoto, it's really insulting to transform it into a trail

    • @RideyBikes
      @RideyBikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Errrr.... I dunno... The old duke (2008ish) is most certainly Supermoto for sure... The 2018 Duke is very much a naked road bike by comparison.
      If i'd kept the wheels 17" front and back but put 50/50 tyres on it would it still be an insult??
      If a Supermoto is in fact a dirt bike with road wheels and tyres, how can it be an insult to put dirt tyres back on something that is technically... a dirt bike with road tyres...
      I'm confused by your logic.
      Each to their own eh! 🤷🏾‍♂

    • @alkane6467
      @alkane6467 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RideyBikes the Duke from the III to the V is a pure stock Supermot with a chassis designed exclusively for this use (just like the aprilia sxv550)
      The Duke V has exactly the same chassis, just with shorter suspensions, and a bigger tank.
      "the clothes don't make the man"
      and in addition, its engine has a cylinder head directly derived from the LC8 of the RC8 or the Superduke...
      an SMCR modified in enduro it works, because the chassis comes initially from off-road.
      But the Duke no, personally it's not pleasant to see for me ...
      When someone has a Duke, either he puts a top box or mixed rims (as it was a DR650), but good suspension and engine preparation, never 😥
      While it is in this configuration that it works best

    • @RideyBikes
      @RideyBikes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alkane6467 Ok, so basically you don't like the look of it. Fair enough. 😔
      I hear your points (ish), but what confuses me is that a Supermoto IS technically and by definition a dirt bike with road rim and tyres. So how is it "really insulting" for the Duke to have dirt wheels? Moderately inappropriate... perhaps! But "really insulting'"?? . . . That seems a bit much. It almost makes more sense to admit the V is a naked and THEN be really insulted. . A naked bike... with adventure wheels!!! Scandal!. . . Even still, "really insulted' would be a bit much. It's not like I swapped out the engine for the 390 lump!! 😁
      Like I say at the end of the video, which perhaps you didn't reach through being so deeply insulted 😉, it's really not meant to be the best enduro/trail bike. It's meant to be a great all rounder for my girlfriend or someone with short legs who wants a 150kg manageable bike that's easier to pick up than a 790, has awesome road manners (which it really still has) is capable of doing some light adventuring (which it has been doing a lot) and has plenty of grunt for the grin factor. And while perhaps it does perform best in its stock configuration, life is more of an adventure if you leave the tarmac from time to time. Right??? And thats why i've gone for an 'Adventure Bike' approach.
      Yes in an ideal world we would have fully upgraded the suspension too but there's currently no budget for that. I did consider taking it out of my own budget but I needed my fun tokens for doing the rally we were headed to. and and and... at the speeds that she rides, she really doesn't need the suspension upgrades yet as the stock suspension does a great job even on the Strata Florida in Wales.
      Also... Do you ride a Duke? 790 or 890 perhaps judging by your avatar. The 790/890 Adventures and Dukes have virtually identical frames (apart from the tower mounts on the stem and a few other tabs) and engines yet one is claiming to be an adventure bike or even a 'rally bike' when it's in full garments, and the other a mid-weight naked. The 790 Duke came first in that situation. So is the Adventure technically a dressed up Naked pretending to be an adventure bike and therefore "really insulting"?? . . . Do the clothes maketh the man in that situation?? 🤔
      I'm still confused by your logic. But thats ok. I don't have to understand and we don't have to see eye to eye.
      Anyway.. I am genuinely a tiny bit sorry you're so offended and I do genuinely appreciate feedback. If you haven't already go ahead and give it a 👎🏽. . You've clearly got mad passion for unmolested Dukes. I was just having a bit of fun building a bike that keeps my girlfriend close while i'm riding the rides that keep me sane. 👍🏽

    • @alkane6467
      @alkane6467 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RideyBikes either my avatar is not mistaken, it is indeed a 790 Duke headlight, but mounted on my Duke V 690.
      with 2008 Supermoto 690 R suspensions.
      it is in my opinion the Duke closest to the 620 of 1994.
      I may have been a bit strong in saying that it was "insulting".
      This chassis has some offroad capability, as it can take big jumps, but it's much better on asphalt.
      After if it is to suit the needs of the biker, either ..
      but a 690 Enduro is a much better bike for a dual sport.

    • @RideyBikes
      @RideyBikes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alkane6467 Your headlight setup sounds awesome. . . The Enduro is (obviously) my choice. But it's too tall for her, even when lowered with a lower seat it's just too tall. She loves the Duke adventure setup and I will keep pressing her to pay for the suspension upgrades. But until then, she'll be taking the trails and rallies at her usual pace (which may or may not have gotten her a trophy at the Sweetlamb Baja). 🏆👍🏽
