I fix one thing... Something else gives out!. . . Just seems to be the way this build has gone from day one. . . With the throttle body fixed I find myself with the starter just spinning and clackatty clacking so time to find out why either the freewheel and or torque limiter have given up the ghost.     I'm having the same issue with my throttle body from my 08 SMC. Throttle motor error code on the TuneECU. Replaced the throttle body with a certified used one and still same message. WTF!? I'm living vicariously through your success!

      @@Merc399 That’s really not a bad idea for a video. Wont be able to post that for a while because we’re about to move abroad for a bit. In the mean time my recommendation for what tools are needed to rebuild a whole bike we be to (as boring as this would be) download the workshop (not owners) manual from the KTM/Husq website, print and bind it, and read it from front to back taking notes along the way. It’s truly eye opening as whilst you don’t need all the tools it mentions you do need maybe as much as 90% of them. Even with all those tools it’s still way cheaper than getting the dealership to rebuild the engine and bike. At least it was for me.

      It’s either the cable coming from the heated grip or the clutch switch that tells the exit when the clutch is engaged.

      Sorry I missed this.. yeah it’s the cylinder, piston from 2018 onwards with crank and counterbalancer from the 2015 seated in the 2009 case with the 08-12 head (depending on whether your talking duke or enduro.

      Just out of spec adjustment. Have you double checked the voltages with the motor drive disconnected?

      @@RideyBikes Thanks for the speedy answer. Not yet, cables en route though hoping it might be easy as that! Do you know how to check if motordrive is broken without getting it to the shop otherwise? It does the "too 0 degree" thing when turning the key, no weird noises etc. Engine cranks but doesn't ignite, fuel pressure spot on and good burst from injector, spark is good and new plug, very similar to your hassles! Haven't checked engine compression but it gives a good puff at exhaust when cranking.

    I just found your channel because I was looking for owner reviews of the Duke 690 which would be something completely different for me. I bought a Himalayan when I moved to rural Powys 2 years ago (previous bike VFR800 so 85bhp drop in power) because I thought I'd enjoy bimbling around local country lanes but have found it's not my thing. Im mainly using the bike to go visit my children in the Midlands so I'm finding the Himalayan frustrating (and potentially dangerous) when trying to overtake traffic doing day 50mph do I thought i need more power but I want something lighter than the VFR with a more upright riding position because I'm 68. Anyway just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your video. It was fun to watch and i was impressed with how you adapted the bike with what you had (and hadn't ie like welding gear). Mike

      But with spoked wheels. 701 svartpilen would be a great base platform for this kind of conversion. We preferred the duke because of its TFT screen and all the adjustability of the rider modes. IIRC the svartpilen has a less editable set of rider modes and slightly less fuel capacity. 👍🏽

But your video opened my eyes to the svartpilen with spoke wheels that my dieler has. Or the xcountry, this is an old bike, but maybe it worse it.. Your opinion will be very helpful... Thanks 😊

    Why is it not good to have a direct airbox like the Raid garage one? i have a 2021 and was thinking about getting the rottweiler intake without a power commander to go along with the slip on akrapovic i already have

      It's to do with air resonance, flow and back pressure. I wasn't at all told that the Rade Garage air filters are bad (as they are clearly working great for many people) just that they don't work well for the 732 setup that I was constructing. I'm no engineer or advanced mathematician so it wasn't a comprehensive lesson in fluid dynamics, just unprompted warnings from both Gray Area KTM and Lyndon Poskitt. Why wouldn't you get the PowerCommander? If you have increased intake and exhaust airflow, you're changing the AFR. There are clear noticeable differences in 'seat of the pants' performance when you change even just the exhaust and further with baffle in or out. On the older models just changing to the Akrapovic exhaust required a different map to be installed on the ECU. Then adding a high flowing air filter meant another set of maps altogether with the latter being the richest of the 3. Personally, I'd get the Powercommander too if adding more air flow in and out. Don't get me wrong, the bike I built is not the same ECU as yours and maybe the 2021 model can cope with all that extra air flow and not be worryingly lean AFR. Dynojet have done the work, IIRC they've got a load of vids on youtube demonstrating the differences between the many setups of 690s with dyno runs and numbers and very good explanations as to how the different years and setups are affected. Has you're bike got a CAT still? Is your SAS still active? Does your bike have the charcoal canister?? All things to consider if you're modifying the general airflow system and are genuinely looking to make positive changes. I guess what i'm saying is that what i've learned from building my 690 through all its iterations from 654 stock, to 654 Akra with akra map, to 654 EVO1 high flow air box with Akra, then up to 732 EVO 2 high flow rally setup.... Relatively speaking, don't add more air unless you're planning on adding more fuel because without Powercommanders or the like, stock bikes are usually close to the limit of lean AFR. Also, if i could've had the Rade Garage setup i would've. Really want the extra fuel range to compensate for the larger capacity and richer AFR. But alas, I followed the advice of those with more experience than me. 👍🏽

    So the problem was the throttle position sensor? My 690 died suddenly mid ride like shut off violently and now cranks but wont start i have no spark wtf?

      @RideyBikes yep the timing chain had snapped and I had no spark cause I was trying to start it with one of the spark plugs removed but being a big bore engine it couldn't spin that fast cause it was sucking air from the spark plug hole

    Hey great video im building now one as well just like you , 12:00 the speedometer & tcs issue can be fixed if you are using enduro 690 ABS SENSORS and to fix the bolt pattern issue you will have to use enduro 690 wheel hubs. that means u will be building wheel from 0 but you can get customized size...

      It’s a fun build and makes a super fun bike. I did use the 690 sensor ring on the back. The front wheel hub was a custom from sm pro but is essentially the same bolt and spoke pattern as the OEM just stronger. It was a custom sensor ring on the front because it’s a 19 inch wheel so the 690 17 or 21 OEM ring would have given the wrong speed reading. The speedo works great and was GPS accurate. The fault was caused by the profile of the 19” tyre being quite tall so compared to the lower (and slightly worn) back profile being just enough of a difference to cause the traction control to engage just a little. I guess that’s the danger of trying to mess with a system that’s designed to engage when the wheels are so much as a tiny fraction off of the same rotational value. New tyre on the back solves all problems. 👍🏽👍🏽

    In 2024 ...... my stock 2014 DUKE 690R with over 60,000 miles is going to get major refresh ..... my turn to build the engine and probably put it on YT. Nothing crazy ..... a light weight oversize 102.5mm JE piston with 12.3:1 CR ..... aftermarket light weight 1mm larger valves, up grade rocker arm on stock cam + valve springs (I'm keeping the valve clearance+lift to factory spec) .... basic port/polish head job + throttle body, might delete the cat-converter ..... will upgrade the radiator, thermostat + oil cooler (with higher CR .... comes higher cylinder pressure and temperature😅) .... need colder plugs rating too ... all the BS emissions hardware made by EPA/politicians just so he/she get more votes comes election time will be dealt swiftly in the bin😂 PS - haven't decide which route to take in tuning it all on 95 and 100 octane pump gas. If the oem ECU can give me wider parameters to control/change the values of ignition, fuel + injectors , I'm not gonna waste money on a TuneECU or Power Commander 6 piggy back/module. I'm seriously thinking off a wideband 02 sensor .... tell me your thoughts on my dumb project/idea/concept/approach and waffling.

      Sounds like it'll be a very interesting build. How are you going to optimise all the changes? What is your wideband O2 sensor going to be connected to? Thanks to having TuneECU and PC5 with autotune connected to a wideband sensor i was able to tune my bike using both 95 and 100. Ultimately I settled on tuning using 95 as it's more readily available, more cost effective and not really noticeably different power. My bike doesn't really push its luck regarding ignition advance. Soft mode utilises the advance found in the bad fuel map for the 2009 enduro akra map.       @@RideyBikes thank u 1000x mate .... u got no idea how much I was searching for anyone knowing about the wideband 02 sensor ..... for context, my car got a standalone Haltech ecu with a wide band and I figured if I can do the same for the Duke 690r. I might DM u when I get the block+head together. I'm sending the block to get it rebored to 105.5mm and Nikasil recoated with aftermarket piston, I'm gonna inlarge the valves by 1mm on intake + exhaust with stock cam .... I have to send the block to UK ..... the head can be machine locally and the exhaust with cat delete can be custom locally. I'm planning to keep the CR factory spec and tune it to 100 octane. This is where I need sum input/advice on the software. PS - I was also thinking about deleting the balance shaft.

    put the FPR between a vice ..... squeeze it, the end part where a spring sits will collapsed (just a bit to where your target pressure) .... it will bump up the pressure a bit

    Does the akrapovic exhaust fits stock header with oem graphite ring or need akrapovic graphite ring?(thicker)or tubes are the same diameter from the inside?

    Hi ive been watching your big bore build vids for some time, obviously you no your stuff, if it's ok I would like to ask a question. I have a ktm 690 smcr that has recently had a rebuild the thing is my neutral light wont work so I have to start it with the clutch in and the side stand up, the gear indicator is new and selected gear is displayed on the dash, and even though it shows gear 0 I still have no neutral light, any ideas?

      @@RideyBikes sorry it's a ktm 690 smcr 2014, all the dash lights work, when the ignition is switched on all the lights come on to show they work and rev counter dose its sweep but the neutral light goes off, there are no other electrical system problems everything works, just watched your big bore bike build ep06 again to see if I can spot any kind of switch under the stater cover, In the vid I think I can see a triangle plug, I have one on mine not 100% but could that be for neutral ? My friend that built the engine dont speak anymore so that's the problem

    Great videos... good information while trying to figure out what is going on with my bike.. idles 40sec when it warms up it idles longer. Popping when giving throttle... I start to get mad with this 😂 need to go all those measures trough that you mentioned. I was just going to order new set from quatum but probably better to skip regulator then. Hope your bike is now working fine. Ah one more question did the old throttle body show correct readings even it was broken so 0.7 and 0.54 closed? So basically dealership was only place that was able to detect the issue?

      The throttle body was showing correct readings when I put the bike together. At the dealership it just said motor drive error. Some time after replacing the throttle body I tried the old one and the settings were off. I readjusted the settings and the bike fired right up. Do you get any error codes when it is popping with throttle?

      @RideyBikes looks like my previous reply got lost somewhere. Anyway, no error codes were seen. It just idles 40 seconds and dies if giving throttle it starts popping and not revving steady.. Just ordered fuel pressure tools, so let's see if it is pump or something else. Looks like that if you want a good regulator, you need to order original.

      Have you checked / replaced the fuel filter? I had a similar issue to yours a few years back. Lead to me replacing and moving the inline fuel filter to outside the tank. While you at it test the pump system whilst it’s outside the tank. Also, there’s some videos online where people have had your kind of problem and it turned out to be the rectifier. My rectifier failed years ago and I did the FAA MOSFET upgrade taking the rectifier from (I think) an R6 with cables made by Eastern Beaver in Japan. Also also, weak spark could lead to popping and shutting off with no error code. Snip off a bit of HT lead and refit check resistance levels as per the manual and replace the spark plug. Years ago I had a spark plug fail then a week later the spark plug cap failed. Ordered new cap from KTM and it too was out of spec despite being new. Multimeter saved me hours of pain.

      @RideyBikes I have mosfet too replacement was done 1½ year ago. Also I have a new pump 2 years old. (Though it won't say anything as it's from quantum) Filter I changed during summer, but will check again once I have change to get new filter. I also need to check running fuel pump outside of tank to see if there are leaks. Just bought a new spark plug and cap and no change, though I didn't measure those. Also ordered that fuel pump pressure tool so maybe it gives some light to situation. Yesterday I tested with other bike nozzle but didn't help

      Issue was the hose that was bent into a lump... replacement that and pump same time now bike works ok 🥳

    Has anyone gutted the stock muffler without other mods, and checked the external temperatures before and after? I'm getting the Moskomoto soft bags and they actually call out the 690/700/701 explicitly as getting TOO hot with stock exhaust to run these bags. Even with the included heat shield. I have insulated my tank already, and I plan to insulate the left plastic panel. I have a Fluke IR heat gun, but no FLIR or other thermal camera. I may try to take some garage band readings before and after cat removal.

      I repacked my Akrapovic exhaust a few weeks ago and while I was waiting for a few bits I ran the decat stock. It is a little cooler but I didn’t feel like it was loads cooler. What I did notice is that the lower rpms just above idle had less power. Possibly not a problem without the big bore mod but if I were to run the bike again with the decat I would certainly spend a bit of time running autotune again to try and level out the slight power drop and possibly run a double foam air filter or maybe the stock snorkel. 👍🏽 690enduror.blogspot.com/2014/11/decatting-690-enduro-r-stock-exhaust.html?m=1

    I haven't seen people do that finger snap since Ali G, keep it up, it gives me a good giggle :-D If you're doing the seals in your calipers, ziplock them in petrol and dump the whole bag in the ultrasonic bath.
