    Another great test with Rose Kev, must give this a go! Not been flying for a few weeks - love the start with the clap! Another great channel with Marcus. Many thanks for sharing the joy of flying and have a great week

      lol always great to see you here, Shaun. This was a really weird thing, eh? Kind of disappointing because now I have to go back to the old gimbal cover. Hahaha I’m still not convinced that’s the real problem though. Time will tell but if you do the test and get the same results, I’ll accept it. Lol

    I'm surprised nobody mentioned the RIID sitting right on top of the GPS receiver. I had to dismantle the whole bird to do an arm repair. That's where the module was, if I remember correctly?

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Oh they have... lol I've had that module on both of our Mini 2 drones since March and haven't noticed it interfere with anything. That's not to say it hasn't and it's still possible that's what was affecting the landings. I'm still not convinced it was the hood cover but it was definitely better without it.

    Great test video, and great verse. I felt the same way in the original test, the gimbal protector was the problem. Have a wonderful and blessed week Kevin and Kristi. Thank you.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      lol thanks as always, Doug. I know that’s what the results are pointing to and I initially felt the problem was solved. I’m not totally convinced yet so I’ll be testing it again to verify some stuff. If I didn’t have to use the RId we may know sooner. Hahaha

    Did you see on her screen that at one point early in the return to home process (and with that gimbal cover off in the 2nd to last test) panning on the screen it said that there is radar nearby and could cause issues. My bet it is !

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Very cool observation, buddy... I didn't notice it until you just made me rewatch it and I did see it this time... lol I don't know if that's a legit message saying there's a radar nearby or if it's one of those little hints that gets displayed during the RTH flight... The next message said "use maps to check the flight route" or something like that... It's definitely possible though that there's a radar in the area because I flew at a pond up the road from there once and the drones went crazy!

    New to droning and just got my first mini 2 se. at the 7:00 mark Is she return to home then changing to your controller location?

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Awesome!!! Welcome to the drinking family, Jerry. This is one of the best hobbies in my opinion and we’ve had alot of fun so far. I know we’ve been doing this drone thing for a few years but I still feel like a newbie pretty much all the time. lol. You raised a good point here with the Mini 2 but this drone doesn’t have the auto home point update option so I don’t think that’s what happened. It’s still a real mystery and I don’t think the gimbal hood was the problem so I’ll have to do more tests. Just so you know, in our experience, there’s always a problem. Hahahaha.

  • @tech9251

    Since the Mini 2 and 3 series do not have precision landing capability, they are totally dependent on GNSS lock and the closed loop system that attempts to navigate back to home point using GNSS. Anything that interferes with this can throw off accuracy. Since the GNSS antenna is at the top of the drone, the gimbal cover should not affect that -- but the RID module on top is a possibility depending on exact placement and other specifics of GNSS signals received at any given time. The gimbal cover however is changing the weight distribution of the drone. One would ordinarily expect the drone to be able to compensate, but there are a bunch of variables in play.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      yea that's great info, buddy... I'm not convinced it's the hood cover causing the problems but then again I've never noticed the RID causing any interference in the past. If I were to move the module, where would you suggest? Just back closer to the rear of the drone? There's really no other place to go because underneath is where the air fins are... Too bad the Mini 2 doesn't have that firmware update to activate the internal RID, eh?

    • @tech9251

      @@WeretheRoberts It's not clear that the M2pro even has the hardware capability to do internal RID. If it did, I'd assume DJI would have used it -- there's no good reason not to enable it for users if it exists. As for GNSS, I'd experiment with different locations for the RID module, but ultimately GNSS is subject to significant variations both short-term and long-term, relating to everything from atmospheric conditions to local external interference sources. So periods where accuracy falls way off really are not unexpected, and the accuracy may get better again just as suddenly. Without added functionality like GNSS RTK, that probably is the best you can do without precision landing.

Do you mean while it’s in the air already hovering after take off?

  • @alex-dronevideos9708

    Hi there, I have the same issue. It is a vision sensor problem, the sensor thinks it is drifting away and trying to recover. And the gps is not going to fix it because the drone is in landing mode and does not return to home anymore. Try doing a sensor calibration using DJI assistant 2 or clean the sensors or something. Also the RIID on top of the drone might interfere with the gps or the compass. My mini 2 faces home point straight after I start return to home.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Oh wow that's a really good possibility... I remember that was mentioned when I was having a lot of problems with the Mini 4 Pro's accuracy and I was meaning to clean those sensors. I forgot and am still having that problem! lol I could've sworn I wrote that down but must've overlooked it. I'm not convinced it was the hood cover either. I have no idea how that cover would affect anything related to the landing but with us I guess anything is possible, eh ? We have 2 Mini 2 drones and both of them do that 90 degree turn toward home when I hit RTH... They've both done it since they were new, too. It's another Robertsism... lol

  • @Glenrsi

    Maybe you mentioned it and i missed it, but what is that you have attached to the top of the drone. I have a mini 2 and a mini 2 se. I have never used return to home, as i always do it manually.

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, buddy... That little box on top is a Remote ID module I've added to the drone so I can be compliant with the new FAA regulations for part 107 flights... Any drone that's registered with the FAA is now required to have Remote ID and since the Mini doesn't have it built in, I had to add the module... boooo!!! lol

    If you read the RTH section of the user manual, you will see that to implement a “Precision Landing”, it is necessary to fly the drone to at least 7m and allow it to get a good look at the landing area ( just a few seconds), before flying either forward or backwards. If you do it that way, you should get a precision landing every time.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Thanks for watching and commenting, James. Yea that’s totally the right approach for the Mini 4 pro but this is the mini 2 and it doesn’t have precision landing. She usually returns home between 2-4 feet away from the launch point which I’m totally happy with. This on the other hand was weird. She started moving away from the home point as she was defending. Really weird

    • @WeretheRoberts

      That’s a great question but I don’t really have an answer. My understanding is the lights are solid green when the gps is locked and flashes yellow when there’s no lock. I don’t want to say I’m totally right here but it should be in the manual. Unfortunately I’m not with our drone manuals at the moment and can’t get a solid answer for you yet.

    • @timlong7289

      A DJI can land without the camera pointing down though, right? Which suggest to me that the camera has nothing to do with it. The drone doesn't _know_ that the landing pad is orange. Most likely it is using the GPS coordinates possibly combined with IMU data.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      @timlong7289 you’re right it can however what happens is the sensors that are beneath the drone take a snapshot of the landing area. It’s not the camera that it uses, it just uses the sensors. It uses the gps to locate its general area, but when it gets closer it starts scanning the area to find the precise location it launched from. It’s really cool stuff and way above my head. lol

      lol thanks, man! It’s always great seeing your comments come across the screen. Yea I agree. For some reason we’ve had some issues with our Mini 2 (Rose) lately and I don’t know exactly why. I haven’t flown Jack in a pretty long time so it may be time to compare them and see what the differences are. He’s still on that really old firmware and fly app 1.4.8 and he’s never had any of these problems Rose has shown lately. Maybe these updates aren’t so good for the 2 anymore. Lol

  • @MrRaymond1021

    I was thinking that maybe it's because of the RID. Being that the GPS is just under that cover where you got your RID. I can't believe that one of those covers can mess with a drone like that.
    I wouldn't know because I don't use any of those things. Just landing gears when I don't use a pad.
    Thanks for sharing my friend. That's definitely something I never knew could happen.
    I think you should use strobes on the front and back arms. Maybe it'll be easier to see for both of you.
    Thanks again for sharing. 👍👍👍

    • @WeretheRoberts

      lol yea I’m still not convinced the hood is the problem and I’m leaning toward the RID also. But why would it come on so instantaneously with the hood on then disappear with the hood off? It’s confusing and I think more flights are in order. lol.

  • @michaeldanforth3059

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Do you think if I were to move the RID closer to the rear of the drone that may help? There's really no other spot to mount it that I can see... It's a conundrum... lol

    • @michaeldanforth3059

      Hmmmmm that’s a pretty good question and I have no idea what the answer would be. I’d say this could be a good thing to test, eh? I know the payload function sets some limitations on the flight so I’ll have to look into it. Thanks for the question, buddy. God bless!

    Hi Kevin
    On at least one run on the way back? an onscreen message mentioned nearby radar interference?

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Oh yea I saw that, too. I think that was just one of those little “bonus tips” they give during the rth flight because the next message said use maps to follow the route or something like that. However, I do know down the road a ways I had some really good interference a couple times a couple years ago. There’s so many variables, man I don’t know anymore. Hahaha. Maybe we should accept it and move on but I was definitive proof!

  • @gama45

    Well, that's good to know. I have one of those gimbal guards, but I stopped using it because it wasn't holding on very securely and kept falling off. I guess t's good I stopped using it. Good test Kevin. Rose did good, and so did you. 👍

    • @WeretheRoberts

      lol why can’t we have anything nice? Hahaha. I really do like the guard and can’t be 100% certain that’s the only issue with rose. But it sure is pointing that way, eh? Maybe it’s the RID, maybe it’s the area. I just don’t know. Someone mentioned I could keep using the hood when I do manual rth flights and that makes total sense. I like the thought of the gimbal being a little safer.

  • @josephf2157

    The Mini 2 does not use the front facing camera to identify where it has to land.... Not sure if you realize that

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Makes sense to me. I don’t think any of these drones use the actual camera on the gimbal to verify their accuracy. They may use the optical flow sensor to help but I really think it’s all gps related now. I’m not sure if you were able to watch our latest Mini 4 pro video but those results pretty much support the gps / GNSS idea. Anyway, thanks again for watching and commenting. Cool stuff. God bless!

    Hmmm...problem solved. Excellent. I just came in from flying my Mini 2, when I seen this upload. I discovered something suprising today. Yesterday, I upgraded my old Galaxy S21 Ultra, for the latest S24 Ultra, with the specific intent to use the older Galaxy to fly. I was afraid that with the old SIM card no longer active (in other words, no network connectivity) that it would present a problem. I was expecting the "You not logged into your account" warning and thus limit my height and distance. Low and behold, she flew as far as I wanted, and as high as I wanted...no issues at all. I can only assume, when I flew her last, and had to log in, I must still be logged in. This makes no sense either, because Im not on any network, nor do i have Wi-Fi turned on.....kinda strange. Good to see rose has no issues after all.. I dont use a gimble protector, but what I do use is extended landing legs to make sure the gimble doesnt strike anything on the ground during landing. Helps if I have to ditch in tall grass.

      @@olabergvall3154 Roger that. Since DJI stopped the mandatory flight logging in an effort to quite the anti Chinese drone paranoia running rampant here in the US, I would have figured that the need to be logged in woud also be excused.

    What has me scratching my head is whenever she is, say, 12 feet off the pad, she knows it. It's not like she thinks she is landing in the correct spot and just isn't. She knows she's 12 feet away and choosing not to get closer.

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I didn’t do a compass calibration for this flight but I did the last time this problem came up. I’m still not certain the gimbal hood is the real issue or the only issue but time will tell. I think the main reason I’ve used the landing pad
      So often is because normally launch from the bed of my truck and the black bed cover confuses the drones. I use it mainly to give the drone a better landing picture. But I do like the extended landing gear idea for sure.

  • @nobby-green

Her landings got better and better, I’m just wondering if she is picking up some sort of magnetic interference or something there though? Remove your RID unit, with battery installed find the Center of Gravity, move your Velcro back to center the RID. I couldn't see any FAA ID on the Mini 2, you're flying Part 107. I fly the Mini 2 for work, there is plenty of room inside the drone for the Dronetag BS, at 1 gram it has no impact on the Mini 2 flight. I fly the Mini 2 since I can hand launch and land in seconds, I'm in areas where there are no level spots, just brush and rocks. On windy days I fly Autel EVO or Mavic 2 but it takes minutes (sometimes pre-flight takes longer) to launch and hand catching can be painful.

    • @WeretheRoberts

      Awesome advice, brother. I’ve seen some videos on the dronetag BS and am contemplating getting one for one of the small drones. The holy stone modules are pretty big but I don’t think I’ve had any problems with them specifically. This was a really weird anomaly I think but it could’ve been related to the module. Anyway, regarding the FAA info, it’s on there. lol. Just not visible on camera because it has my phone number on it. lol. You’re probably the first or maybe 2nd person who’s told me they use the mini 2 for business. That’s awesome!!! It’s a really capable drone and to me there’s something about old school vintage, eh?

    Well first of all the Mini 2 does not have precision landing like the mavic series, and secondly, take off that ridiculous remote ID module that's sitting right above the GPS module inside the drone and you might have a better chance of it landing closer, I have a couple of mini 2. And none of them land that far away from their starting point

    • @WeretheRoberts

      lol yea I mentioned it doesn’t have precision landing in the video. It wasn’t a test of that honestly, it was just a test to see if the hood was affecting its accuracy. The mini 2 usually lands within just a few feet of the launch spot so it was really weird to me how she was wandering off so far away. I guess the hood has more affect than I figured it would. Regarding the remote id module, where would you suggest I place it since there’s really no other spot on that little drone to put it?
