Another quick tip: just like "You're welcome" is slowly been replaced in colloquial speech by phrases like "no problem" or "no worries", I've found that there's 2 pretty common expressions, mainly used amongst the younger generations, that also replace the portuguese counterpart of "You're welcome", i,e. "De nada":
"Sem problema" (which roughly translates to "no problem" or "no worries") and "Na boa" (a less formal option that means something along the lines of "it's all good" )
Na boa is only used among young people, it's slang.
@@dudanunesbleff I did say "mainly used amongst the younger generations" and I also mentioned that it's colloquial speech. I even mentioned that it's "less formal" than "sem problema". I don't know what more do you want from me.

Honestly u sound and look like a native. Great obversation. Even though I'm a Portuguese living in UK I never realized many things about Portugal in general until u've point them out, as to me them just come out naturally 😅 and I'm used to them! So great job and keep it up.

The "cedilha" is crucial when saying "força". Because people wouldn't feel as much at ease if you went around saying "forca" (gallows) to them.

I love the “posso?” tip. I lived in Mexico City and it’s a society of extreme politeness. Many of the tips here translate to how daily life is lived there. For example, it’s common before stepping into someone’s house or if someone is blocking an entrance to smile and say “Puedo?” Same meaning, may I (please is inferred)? Another example is Obrigada, Eu. If you buy something at a shop and tell the owner or person who works there “Thank you” they say, “No (please), on the contrary.” Gracias…no, al contrario. Same sentiment as “Obrigada, eu.”
Fabulous stuff - will learn these phrases and fire them at the "oporto" cafe next to the office!

E Então is more like a question.It's like Afinal? or Como é que é? or Como é que fica? E Então? Can also be a salutation when you meet a friend or someone you already know.It's implicit in the expression E Então(está tudo bem or estás bem)? Portuguese is a vast Language with many, many, many options for the same words or expressions. But you are doing very well in Portugal. Bôa Continuação!

The string of ways we can express instant perception of something (or pretending we do) is rather abundant; so, alongside 'percebi' and 'entendi', you might try 'compreendi' or '(es)tou a ver'. The last one translates to your very much common 'I see...'

Em ambientes formais percebo que é mais usado “entender” em vez de “perceber”. Mesmo no vídeo que a federação portuguesa fez com a federação espanhola de futebol, o verbo usado em português é entender, também em publicidade na televisão é mais comum encontrar o verbo entender. Então acho que em Portugal usa-se entender e perceber e no Brasil usa-se perceber apenas para situações específicas
Sim na mouche e não na mosca ... quero dizer com isto, que a colonização pelas telenovelas brasileiras da SIC ... continua a fazer o seu caminho, meio tortuoso, para ajudar os macacos de imitação na procura da originalidade televisiva Global ...que é enorme, ou paroquial, conforme os gostos ...
No Brasil, não é comum o uso do verbo perceber para indicar a compreensão de algo, seja em um ambiente formal ou informal. Cá usamos: ter ciência, compreender e entender. Ademais, julgo que se usar perceber, as pessoas não entenderão de imediato o que está a dizer.
I am a native Portuguese and only now have I understood that we do "swallow" so many syllables 😅🤣I'm sorry if we are difficult to understand. I guess that because we hear words that already have "swallowed" syllables since we are very, very little, we don't really realize it when it happens.
In Madeira I hear "ta log" or "te log" a lot, which I think is something like the Spanish "hasta la luego" -- but of course with the usual 90% of letters missing.
Yes, all around Portugal people say "até logo", but because it's so fast and locals drop off letters, it sound like "té log" ☺️

Hi Liz! I notice that business use the feminine form obrigada, and sometime male shop clerks do to. Is that a general thing? Is that because they are speaking on behalf of the empresa (feminine)?

So my family is portuguese, so i have to speak portuguese to some of my family members like my grandparents, but im starting to forget it. i dont remember how to say certain things anymore which makes it harder to communicate with them. what do you think i should do to stop myself for completely forgetting, and how do i learn how to speak it better
