- How To Cut Your Own Hair & Not Screw It Up is a video where I show demo the most simple methods for cutting your own hair with minimal risk of cutting too much. DISCLAIMER: These techniques are for trimming. You should always see a professional stylist for the best results. No at home haircut can replace a trained professional. That being said, this haircut tutorial shows what I call the Gravity Cut and two versions of The Pony Cut. Cutting your own hair is not something I normally advise, but during this quarantine I know we are all dying for a trim so I hope you guys enjoy!

Very helpful video. I didn’t have a problem with the camera angle because the audio description is detailed. I’ve cut my hair 3x with this method. First time I tried it my hair was as long as the model in the video. After 3rd time my hair is 3 inches below my collar bone and I like this length best. This method works great!!! After I make the center part front to back and trim one side, I leave that side down and to the front while I trim the other side. I do this in front of a mirror so I can see that both sides are straight and even. After the front/back ponytail, I add one more ponytail for final layering with the hair just on top/crown of my head, like the area that would be shaved as a bald circle on a medieval monk (sorry-best way I have to describe it) and cut that the same way as the front/back ponytail. I also brush my hair straight and down the front with a center part so I can cut face framing layers by just trimming up at an angle to my chin. I don’t have fancy scissors, so I use my big office scissors and gently snip into each ponytail end so it’s not blunt or harsh. I get a lot of compliments and am often asked who does my hair. Sorry, but I might never go back to the salon.
Super informative; thankyou. Sure we can't see the trimming in the first bit, but the most important is how to SECTION the hair hold scissors etc....I thought this video was genius. Hold scissors like this, use these scissors because they are more forgiving, make these parts, cut on an angle, start small, check every 10 seconds, don't concentrate on a single spot. You even show the model making a mistake. BRILLIANT.

I tried this cut just now. I styled my wavy hair and waiting for it to dry. From what I can see right after the cut, it looked promising. Can’t wait to see the results!

@@veera6469 yes, it does. It looks great in my opinion. I’m sure I didn’t do it perfectly but good thing having wavy hair hides any imperfections. Not so sure how a straight hair would fare, though. 🙂
Great video & great advice! Me and my sisters have tried the ponytail-layer diy haircut many times when we were teens & in our early 20’s😊 The layers always came out really far apart from each other, and the longest layer underneath was always super long 😆😆 It still wasn’t too bad looking so we kept doing it for years.
That girls hair is FLAWLESS & this is a really clever trick! So many haters on here. If you can’t understand what he’s doing you need more help with life than trying to cut your hair. This isn’t a hard concept at all.
So this feels like the only helpful “cut ur own hair” video since the model is actually cutting her own hair. BUT WE CAN’T SEE IT. Didn’t anyone check that camera?

Soooo regardless of this entire pandemic, I HATE going to the hair dressers. I have enough social anxiety as is, and the hair dresser is a nightmare for me. I really like the concept of this Ponytail method you show here where the hair is sectioned twice. My layers need a trim REALLLYYY bad. I want to grow them out, but I can't deal with the fried ends anymore.
I don't want to use thinning shears, as I feel they damage my hair more than help. I have regular hair cutting scissors, brand new. Is it ok to point cut into the ends with regular hair scissors instead?
Please make another video elaborating on this particular method (the two sections for the layering). When you say "cut on an angle" do you mean cut the hair in the ponytail so that it goes into a diagonal point, like a 45 degree angle, or was the phrase used to just mean dont straight cut across?
Can I cut each section straight across first and then point cut into it?
I think if you did a video on this it could be very helpful and popular! Maybe see if someone you know isn't too shabby with the camera!

Can you do a video on styling short/medium length hair? The only videos I ever find are to do loose curls in different directions and get the same look as everyone else :(

Regarding the angles, nope, still confused because how does one tell what part of hair is what once it’s bunched together in a ponytail? I feel like I’m not grasping a vital piece of the puzzle 🤔 However.. I gave it a go anyway but took off only half an inch just to try it out. I’ll get a little more brave next time. When trimming the exact angle doesn’t matter as much. This haircut is not for major changes, just getting the ends to look healthy again. Great question!
All I can focus on is how beautiful her hair is. Goals.
I'll be trying this tomorrow since my ends really need a touch up. Just hope my arms are long enough to pull that hair tie from my head.

I ended up watching some other haircutting videos and ended up combining the preserve the perimeter + using the thinning sheers from your video and the hair tie option from another video.
My hair is just too long (longer than that of the girl in your video) and my arms too short to pull off your hair tie option unfortunately.
Great video, I tried it and it works :) Thanks! One question - how many inches would be safe to cut off during all the different steps that you took to layer? From 1 to 2 " every step?
Depends on your starting length but since this is really best suited for “trims” I’d stick doing 0-1 inches at a time and see how it’s laying. The last think you want is to take off 6 inches, while learning the technique

Right at about 6:39, when you're pulling the hair tie up, I notice the hair snagged or bunched up a bit, but you didn't reset the ponytail... (my OCD was screaming to fix it, and would most likely convince me to start over, if I were doing this).. So my question is, it doesn't affect the result? I should tell myself to chill and not redo my ponytail? 😎

Doesn’t matter at all. It’s not a precision clean line haircut. The technique works at home because it’s very forgiving.
New mom here can’t get to the salon my hair is so long I’m a hair colorist not stylist and I’m about to attempt … wish me luck I’m desperate!

What if your hair is one length though? Any tips?
YES! This is a totally over simplified comment here but hope this helps. If your hair is one length, you can skip tilting the head down and skip the layers part. Part down the center, look straight forward, brush the hair evenly and gently trim the ends. Remember, these techniques are for trimming. You should always see your stylist for the best results.

@@juliadixon4810 You cut the back in both of these techniques. When you over direct the hair forward over your shoulders in the gravity cut you care cutting the hair in a way that gives a slight V shape to the back. The hair does not have to BE in the back, to make it, "the back". Hope that makes sense!

Do you have sheer recommendations? I keep hearing you want really good scissors but I can't spend $100+ on sheers-- i'm wondering if it's necessary to spend that much.
Depends on your needs. I couldn't make a recommendation without knowing more about your needs. Are you a hairdresser or just looking to trim at home?
@@themillionairehairstylist I'm not a professional. My hair is about to my butt, the front is shorter, however (due to damage). I'd like to cut off about 4-5 inches of length in the back and 1-2 inches in front to get rid of the dead stuff.
But Im afraid of getting a straight across hard line since I'd be cutting so much off (I haven't had a cut in about 8 months--bad, I know). My hair is fine and straight but I have a lot of it in the back. It's thinner on the sides.

I saw in one of the videos that you should no dry your hair stretched. What do you think of heatless curling methods then ? And doesnt a blow out with a round brush kind of stretch the hair too ? Xx
Hey! Ideally you would never apply heat or tension to the hair but this is unrealistic as these techniques aid us in enjoying and having fun with our hair. Even the sun damages your hair but we do not completely avoid that. It's advisable to avoid access use of any of these damaging things if ultimate hair health is your number one priority. But most people want their hair to look nice too and often this requires styling and heat + some tension can yield a beautiful result.

Thank you for your feedback! Aw gosh that sucks the links must be broken. Thank you for letting me know. I would recommend Using a 40 tooth or so thinning shear and going slow. Cut a tiny bit then check. Just go slow. You can't put it back on!
Followed this and ended up with a head full of split ends :( No thinning shears for me ever again

This looks too easy. Im starting to think that only thin hair can be cut at home(or curly because it hides flaws). I might try this next spring, after my cut mistakes grow out from the last thin, long-haired how-to video.😁

let it grow and follow the steps in this video or if there’s a salon near you that is open, go see a profession. No self haircut can replace what a well trained stylist can do.

the model here has a centre parting, i wear mine to the side, does the parting make a difference when following these steps? i don't want to cut it with a centre parting then flip my parting back the tie side & 1 side of my hair is longer
if you side part, the only step you'll want to change is the layering. Slide your pony over your part, rather than the middle and that will ensure your layers reflect that of a side part.

If you have fine/thin hair NEVER use thing shears. If a beautician comes at you with these, get up, pay, and walk out.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Lynn! That is not necessarily true though. While it may be true that most untrained or inexperienced hairstylists miss-use these shears often, thinning shears are a tool, and in the hands of the discerning stylist, they will know when and how to use the tools on any hair type. There are a myriad of ways thinning shears can be used even on fine hair. Using them in this case is the difference in cost of a mistake. Make a mistake with regular shears and the mistake will be far more costly. Make a mistake with thinning shears, and it likely wont even be seen. That is what the utility of this tutorial is; hence... "not screw it up". I hope that helps clarify!
I usually feel the same way when going in for a "cut" with my fine hair, but this method for a TRIM to take out split ends a d freshen the current cut WITHOUT changing it, I think thos is genius. ...makes me wish I hadn't just thrown out a pair of thinning shears

Aaargh!! So my complaint is different than that of all others commenting; it's regarding my ONE pet peeve with all hair tutorials that, once again, happened here with this one - NOT SHOWING THE FULL END RESULTS!
I am BEYOND frustrated with how much TIME I've spent watching hair trimming tutorials in their entirety, only to be disappointed once again because no one ever shows the BACK OF THEIR HEAD!! I mean, what is up with that?!?
I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm going to dare try cutting my own hair at home and want it to look good and turn out EVEN all around, then I not only want to find a tutorial that has as many detailed steps (both thoroughly explained AND shown) as possible, but also one that shows a 360° view of the end result.
*sigh*
Seriously..... anyone reading this who decides to make their own tutorial....show the whole haircut. It's all about the results, dude.....
....I mean, if you're watching a cooking show, you wouldn't find a chef explaining all the detailed steps AND showing you how to make their favorite meal, only to show you the soup and appetizers at the end and not the main course or dessert....would you??
