      Yes. I have a grand-daughter that has SUPER THICK (pony tail is like 3” wide!) would this technique work on her, or would she need more than 6 rubber bands?

      Your model had the perfectly straight hair that made your instructions helpful IF your hair was strange got and evenly cut. But personally, my hair has tons of layers, waves and curls and even a major cowlick so the instructions don’t help me at all

      @@jodyringle7418 great question. You should be able to manage it with just 6 sections. Just make sure it’s damp.

    I like the way he actually has her do it all the way through, rather than showing us and doing it himself. Every time I think of cutting my own hair, I remember my self inflicted shag from the 70's. Many years later here I am doing it again, but I use my husband's clippers when I cut the ends which automatically texturizes it. At one time in our little town I had a stylist who did a point cut on me for the first time. She moved on of course, but it was one of the best cuts I ever had. It lasted a very long time. I lived in Portland for many years where this studio is. That place is totally top drawer! Excellent salon.

    This was fantastic! My hair had gotten very long but the ends were much thinner than the middle, and the length was pulling out my curls and waves. I cut off about 8 inches and it looks and feels so much healthier.

    I tried this by myself exactly as he instructed and it worked! I was pleasantly surprised how easy and quick it was to do. It did take me awhile to wet my hair and band my hair in sections but once I got that done, I just cut away. It turned out great! My husband was impressed.
    I watched many other videos before finding this one. I trusted his technique because it made a lot of sense. This is the only video worth saving for cutting your own hair.

    Thank you! I have waist length hair & I have found no one who was able to properly trim my hair. They either just comb it out straight down & either use scissors or a trimmer & go straight across. Every single time is it lopsided or I had long tags. Now I can trim it on my own without paying a pretty penny only to have it mangled.

I just cut my hair (for the first time in my 38 years of life) and took off 4 inches, positive the entire time I would be doing the walk of shame into a salon to have it fixed. This worked for me. My first hair cut done this way. Turned out ok, but then I used the thinning scissors to soften the ends as I found it difficult to do the point cutting, but I think it would help to have a quick tutorial on how best to use the thinners. I had a good hair cut until that point. The thinners were ok but it added 'dryness' and I may have gone too far with the 'thinning'. But a good first start. Thanks for the tutorial.

      Great question! If you have a friend that can clean up the back after you’ve cut the length, that would be ideal. But if you’re alone, the low pony is a great way to clean it up yourself. I will say, you’re likely better off cutting the length yourself then having your friend just clean up the middle.

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s a great question. On wavy/curly hair I really don’t think there’s a best way. I personally prefer to cut it wet but I know a lot of stylists like to cut it dry. I totally understand the feeling of “in and out”. I always say this: If you like what you’re getting, you’re best to stay with your stylist and not fix something that’s not necessarily broken. However, if you’re not in love with the results AND you’re not loving the process.....it may be time to start looking. Hope that helps a little.

    Do you have a video to cut curly hair or does this technique work on curly hair?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This technique will work on curly hair as well. The main difference is to dry and style your hair first, then determine how much you want to trim off the ends (ie an inch, 1/2 inch etc). Then follow these steps but when you go to cut, make sure to cut whatever amount you determined, DON’T cut the length to the actual length you want to end at since the length will get shorter when it dries. Hope that makes sense.

    Best method and explanation so far. But I did not like black robe for cutting black hair for demonstration purpose. A white gown would have helped to see the results and process clearly.

    Awesome. Do you know anything about cutting wigs? Like what kind of ✂️ to use and how does synthetic cut different from human hair? Etc.

      Great question . Honestly, I haven’t cut any wigs, so I wouldn’t want to speak to that and give you the wrong insight. Sorry I can’t be more help.

    Thanks for the easy tutorial. I had one question though. Since we cut the hair using a middle parting, if someday after the haircut I flip my hair to a side parting, won't the hair on that side be longer? Will that be okay?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. The length wouldn’t end up being longer, however, whatever side you part your hair too would feel like there are some long layers where the side you part ON would feel one length. If you decide that you’re going to part on one side all the time, you can part down that side and cut it vs parting down the middle.

    Absurd to use the dark cape to instruct this cut on dark hair, cannot see the ends/angle being cut, I get the gist but frustrated with the bad visual.

    Might be silly question but is the thumb on top or bottom of shears when cutting?? Seems logical to have it on top when I hold em, but it looks like yours and hers is on bottom...which is right??

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. Honestly, when you’re working on your own hair, whichever positing allows you to access the part you need to cut the easiest is what I’d say. There’s some insight as to which blade SHOULD be moving and acting as the “cutting blade” as well as hand and appropriate wrist position, but that’s, IMO, only really important if you’re a stylist and doing multi cuts per day etc.
