  • On today's First Ride (client edition) I'm on a BMW S1000R from 2014. We have this BMW here in the shop to install an Arrow full system exhaust on it and the owner Jay, asked if I would want to do a first ride on it. With my opportunities to get a ride in on one of these being so few and far between I said YES as fast as possible. Let's finally get the First Ride in on BMW's S1000R and see how this power plant does in a naked platform!

    S1000R is my first bike, and over the years, I have had many bikes. I long for and miss the brutality of a Panigale, the masterpiece engine of an Aprilia, and the crazy torque of a super duke. Bikes, they come and go, but S1000R never walks out of my heart for a split second.

    OC: Personally I love the smoothness of the inline motors. I'm partial to the inline 3 of the MT09 and the Street & Speed Triple. I appreciate your MT10 but thats too much for me lol! Great Vid and thanks to your client Josh for letting you do a first ride on that beautiful BMW!!! When I started watching motorcycle content a few years ago, it was your videos that really got me interested in riding street bikes. I currently ride a Ninja 400 in all its glory! Bought mine two weeks ago and absolutely recommend it. It is so much better than Chase tells us. Out of 5-10 other models with a similar format the S1000R is the best bike. Other bikes in this category may have a more aggressive stance or throttle response, but the BMW delivers as much and more than I need on every front

    Sweet S1000R, but I have to admit that the mismatched mirrors really bugged my OCD. However my OCD was mostly assuaged once Chase pointed out that they matched the headlights. Nice touch.
    As an MT09 owner I’m always interested in upgrading to a more premium naked bike (S1000R, SP3, Super Duke, etcetera). Not saying I will, as the MT09 is paid off, but it’s still fun to look.

    I have those squishy grip add-ons too! it's very comfy and get's rid of a lot of vibes from the handlebar, but they do in crease the diameter of the grips a little bit and that's probably the reason why I get hand cramps when I use my winter gloves

    • @lorditsprobingtime6668
      @lorditsprobingtime6668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same bike in the same 2014 model. It had 2 settings for the heated grips but I had the standard grips which were fine even for my 59 yo at the time hands and I figure that thick foam which I have tried on other bikes I didn't like because it seemed to reduce throttle response a bit but I'd also be worried that the element part of the heated grips may overheat with thick foam over it. I don't know but was happy with the standard grips and never had crampy hands from vibration, probably helped a lot by the fact you've got cruise control and it's easy to steer with your knees while you give your hands a break if road and traffic allow.

    • @1998lemuel
      @1998lemuel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorditsprobingtime6668 yeah you're probably right with the throttle response. It increases the diameter of the grips by a little bit that's enough to make the twisting motion a lot bigger than usual. I initially got the squishy grip because when I took delivery of my motorcycle. I felt the grips digging into my palms on the way home. Granted that was my 1st time on a bike after my msf course. Since I've been riding for almost 2 years now, I know how to properly hold the grips now and I might take the squishy grips off to try without it.

    • @lorditsprobingtime6668
      @lorditsprobingtime6668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1998lemuel With these S 1000 Rs and a lot of the new bikes hitting the market these days you've got that cruise control to give BOTH hands a break when you feel like it so squishy or other types of comfort grips aren't as critical. If you haven't got cruise control there's those really cheap and simple but surprisingly effective palm type plastic lever things that you clip over the end of the throttle and you can still easily work the throttle but while riding along you can relax your right hand and just rest your palm on that to hold or control throttle. Some people don't like them while many swear by them. They are cheap and come in about a million different though the same brands and variants and simply stretch on to the grip, although you probably would have some trouble getting one over those thick foam grips, one of them may well suit your needs and it only costs a few dollars to find out.
      I would never trust one of those so called add on "cruise control" arrangements that mechanically hold the actual throttle, far too dangerous as far as I'm concerned. In any emergency situation the last thing you want is to have to physically release anything before you can actually start trying to stop. The proper electronic cruise control on these shuts off instantly either by switching it off, touching either front or rear brakes, pulling the clutch even just half an inch or even by turning the throttle backwards with a little more force than just backing off so very safe on these.

      @@MotobeatsTV You won't regret it. The newer ones have the quickshift on the down gears too making that part even better though I haven't ridden one with that yet. Mine was the 2014 and first release of them to here in Austtalia which had it only on the upshifts and even then it only really works great when you're giving it to it, around town I'd do clutchless up changes but would manually back off the throttle myself as I did and you could keep them perfectly smooth.
      Good luck and happy travels when you do.

    • @lorditsprobingtime6668
      @lorditsprobingtime6668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MotobeatsTV Mostly I prefer doing the whole gear change procedure of pulling the clutch, knocking it up or down as the case may be and on the downshifts blipping the throttle myself and on mine, the first generation as this one in the video is they only had it on the upshifts. I'm not sure if it needed a bit of adjusting or computer settings tweaked but the quick shifting could be slightly rough and imprecise when just cruising around, get the bike really working up on high or full throttle pushing it up towards the redline and it worked instantly and smoothly, almost completely instantly in the next gear with no noticeable time off throttle which can make a big difference when racing against someone. I've always been pretty good at working the revs on a bike and throttle , clutch and gear selector timing good enough that I could beat someone on an equal or even exactly the same bike if they had one and a few times they thought it must be something better about my bike, or that theirs wasn't running as well as it should so we'd swap bikes and I'd usually still beat them, purely by changing at the right revs and doing it quickly but smoothly which takes a lot of practice to get perfect. With that quickshifter though which is standard on these it was ONLY a matter of the revs and that's all so almost anybody could get the most out of it acceleration wise as long as you changed right at that point when the power just starts to reduce and it was almost impossible to even notice. Of course when you're winding one of these buggers right out you'll have so much Adrenalin pumping through your system you probably wouldn't notice if a bomb went off beside you lol.
      I have no idea how it feels to have it on the downshift auto blipping the throttle but that's always the one where you're more likely to crunch things so if they've got it fully sorted out so it works smoothly at all revs that would be great too. When I bought mine in 2014 I actually wanted to buy the K series in the 1,300 but even though more of a high performance semi luxury more cruiser sort of bike they didn't have the cruise control on them and I really liked the idea of being finally able to give my arthritic (then) 59 year old right wrist a break now and then by hitting cruise and actually sitting as upright as I pleased and even crossing my arms and steering with my knees while the bike kept the speed constant. The cruise control AND the quick shift set up wasn't on many other bikes then but is getting to be common now which is great if you don't want to have to buy a BMW to have it. I would imagine after another 7 years to perfect things it probably works even better on the upshifts and hopefully is perfect on the downshifts too.
      I have no idea about how much experience you have, especially with high performance bikes but be warned that you need to think and plan ahead a lot further up the road than any quick 500cc sorts of bikes, especially maybe with these, they just rev so hard and smooth that even at lowish revs it only takes a little twist of the wrist and suddenly that sharp bend that was waaayyyy up the road is suddenly right there and you'll be going into it way too fast if you're not very wary of that till you get used to it. That nearly caught me out even with (at the time) 47 years riding experience on the test ride on one. They send a guy from the shop out with you here and these being new the salesman they sent hadn't had a chance to wind one up himself so was more than happy to say screw the law, we gotta really find out how these buggers go so entering onto a highway section I wound up hitting 240 kph and the big bend "way down the road" nearly did catch me out by suddenly being there much faster than I ever could have expected. These buggers do almost everything damn near perfect. They aren't the perfect touring bike but they are still very capable of it and even at 59 and 60 when I had mine I was out almost every day clocking up usually around 300 kilometers roughly on average, well I did 35,000 kilometers in the 18 months I had mine before being wiped out by an idiot in a big tin box.
      Amazingly these things are fantastic on tight and twisty mountain roads which is where I'd usually have much preferred something like a light and nimble around 500cc 2 stroke, these buggers absolutely love bends and being flicked around as well as highway cruising, I will admit the revs felt a little annoying when just highway cruising but it was happy doing it. They'll do up to 140 kph in first gear taken to the redline so fairly tall gearing for blast off the line starts and their launch control in my opinion is NOT the quickest way to get off the line and really go hard from the start so I never used it, I just worked the clutch and revs and kept that front wheel just skipping no more than an inch off the ground for the quickest starts but watch it if you turn off traction control as I always did because it's what normally makes sure you don't loop it by noticing that the front wheel is spinning slower than the back so assumes you're spinning the wheel and automatically reduces power, traction control off though and YOU'VE got to control how high it lifts the old fashioned way. With experience and practice I guarantee I could get going more quickly than anyone using their launch control procedure though but, when it's not hitting the real serious power till around 9 grand and being geared to do 140 kph in first it takes a bit of skill to really launch without either bogging down, stalling, looping it or just over revving it and slipping the hell out of the clutch and causing major wear and heat from the friction.
      Safe and fun riding to you too, just be wary, these are insanely quick compared to anything I grew up around and inexperience and this sort of performance is a very potentially dangerous combination, it's also extremely addictive though lol.

    Looks like he’s got Grip Puppies on it. Foam grip covers. I tried them on my Ninja 400, took them off within minutes. They are great at reducing vibration, but just felt way too awkward.

      They are the best to ride. The fully faired RR would ONLY be better on a race track with a skilled rider, any other time you're much better off on one of these. And yes, I did have one in red but also the same 2014 version.

    Hmmmm. FZ/MT10 or S1000R? The BMW just has electronic suspension and heated grips (usually), so that definitely gives it an advantage. It's also faster with better brakes.

    OC: Gotta say I prefer a smoother ride. I'm a fan of linear power delivery. I think that the BMW S1000RR is probably the only 1000cc bike that would get me back on a litre bike. Had the Ducati 959 and wasn't really happy. Can't help but wonder if I got the S1000RR instead. Would I still have it? At the time it was the 959 or the S1000RR. Would I be going back to a middle weight sportbike like the RS 660? Also I'm a fan of the asymmetrical lights. Love the modifications he has made to the S1000R.

    • @AntaresSQ01
      @AntaresSQ01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just get an S1000XR. It can do 98% of what the RR can do but with a much meatier low end. It beats the RR off the line up to about 80-90mph. All while being extremely comfortable and extremely capable even on track.

  • @weswills9929

    I’ve been asking for more Bmw first rides since the 2012 RR first ride. He needs to ride 15+ RR, 20+ RR, 17+ R and the 2022 that’ll be released has what he’s looking for. When I rode the S1000R it was so perfect I’ve not felt anything like it since. Not a Tuono, not an MT-10. You’re also comparing the 2014-2018. Ride a newer version of all the bmws and then see how you feel
