    Absolutely agree , the super naked bikes are the new era of bikes. Even a Harley guy like myself is starting to look hard at a super naked ride to add to the collection. Nice video.

      Whack the throttle wide open on the 1290 and go up through the gears with the quickshifter, suddenly you have a revelation about the way V-twin engines COULD function, if companies (such as KTM) put their minds to it.

      Exactly my thinking been riding hard core sport bikes over 40 years, I've ordered the 2020 KTM 1290R should be getting it late this week. First time riding sport V-twin, rode many harleys.

    Hi all, thanks for the positive comments on the test. If we're honest there are a couple of reasons for the lack of Tuono... First and foremost Aprilia were unable to supply one for us to use. Secondly, we wanted to include bikes in this test that people actually buy. Whilst we can agree that the Tuono does well in lots of online tests, we're yet to see even one being ridden on the road. Still, we'll be getting a Tuono to use sometime next month and will be doing a full review on it to make up for its lack of appearance in this test! Hope you enjoyed the episode - Bike World Team :)

      First, let me say it's an awesome video you made. My best videos are naked comparisons. But it's not just Tuono lacking. There is also a Ducati Monster 1200 R and if we would want to nit pick we could mention MV Agusta 1090 (very interesting bike). Still, thanks for the effort, enthusiasm and great vibe you shared with us. Thumbs up!

      Good thing you left it out. If you had included it, you would have spoken about nothing else than how fast that bike is, how awesome it sounds, how well it handles etc etc etc. Good thing that all the second place bikes gets a little attention for a change.

    Can we get an up to date version of this? I love how they use the argument about liking a bike for not being perfect like how the bmw is very clinical and the ktm is too much bike for most to enjoy long term. Would like to see an update with new spec models

    Great review, but for all you Speed Triple haters, I've owned my bike for 4 years now and I'm as happy today as I was the first day I brought it home. It consistently turns heads and once I added a power commander and K&N filter it has more power than I could ever want.

    When I first watched this a few years ago I routed for the SDR as I wanted one and disagreed with the decision..then a year later I routed for the s1000r. Now I'm watching it again and I want a speed triple 1050 and I'm glad it made it to the end now! All bikes are good just depends what u fancy right here right now

    I OWN AN MT10 and the closest i`ve come to riding it is watching TH-cam videos. Hpw sad is that.... That`s life in Norway, winter is harsh BUT bikes are cheaper in winter.

    Got to love the motorbike press. When John/Superbike magazine did their super naked review, the BMW and KTM blew the triumph away. Now the triumph is apparently the better bike and then up pops a triumph advert. You just can't believe anything you read and watch. Just get yourself a test ride on the bikes you like and make your own mind up. I bought the BMW and it's superb.

    I've recently gotten into naked bikes, after only riding sport/superbikes for the entire time I've been riding bikes on the road. I'm going to be purchasing an Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC next month if everything goes to plan. Cool test.

    Yamaha is really killing it! They keep sending the other makers scrambling to come up with bikes to compete... They keep outdoing themselves with new and exciting bikes and at good prices! MT-09, MT-07, R1, FJ-09, XSR900, XSR700, MT-10! What's next?

      No offense, but I think that title honestly belongs to BMW.
      BMW has defined the Adventure Touring bike
      BMW started this 200hp Superbike war
      BMW Delivered the 160hp Naked along with KTM in 2014.
      BMW just came in and capitalized on Ducati's Adventure Sport touring line( Multistrada) and now they are making headlines with that along with the Superduke GT.
      Honda still owns the Japanese market for some god Forsaken reason and BMW still holds the high end European end..
      Yamaha is just making competitive bikes, but they are generally late as far as sending people scrambling.

    I'd pick the speed triple. Love the sound of the 3cyl, 140hp is more than enough for the street and it looks fabulous. I love the improvements they made on the looks, especially the tank and its in my opinion by far the best looking bike of the bunch.

      I couldn't agree more. I traded my street triple in for the KTM , and while its a great bike, it just has too much for the road. I just never liked how it looked or felt on the road. I traded it for the speed S last month and the Triumph feels better on the road, you can explore the throttle more, the engine is 10x smoother, and that 3 cylinder howl is intoxicating. I'd definitely go with the Speed for sure!

    Just picked myself up a '11 S3 1050. pleased by this really. Not the same bike I know, suspension differences, weight etc, but still. Also, John...that helmet...pure yes.

    This is such a bad test its not even funny. You mention the wrong HP numbers for the 1290, never mention that the s1000r is completely buzz at highway speeds, the MT-10 has insanely short gearing, you never mention what mode any of the bikes are in because that changes the ABS breaking results, and you say you made it up about 170 MPH on the BMW and KTM yet both bikes top out at just about 160.
    Also where is the Monster 1200r and Tuono?
    I have ridden all 4 of those bikes and the KTM is by far the easiest to ride every day because of the massive amount of torque and its breaks are not the worse.

      1. KTM claims the 1290 makes 173hp, as claimed at just past the 3 minute mark in the video.
      2. We said the MT-10 has shorter gearing which is why it was harder to get off the line than the S1000R.
      3. We had an 'indicated' 175mph on the KTM so you're wrong again.
      4. For the love of God, motorcycles use BRAKES, not breaks.
      5. We didn't say the KTM's BRAKES were the worst, we tested all four of the bikes at 60mph and the KTM took the longest to stop due to the intrusive ABS. Software is just as important as hardware.
      Thanks for the well thought out comment though! Try harder next time.

      KTM claims the 1290 makes 180 HP. Google can find it for you its on every website that does a review or info of the bike. You also had the Akrapovic can on the bike so it makes slightly more at the crank. There is no way the bike "indicated" 175 MPH. I own the freaking bike and it stops indicating at around 160 MPH, and other reviews have had there bikes max around the 160 MPH mark. It taking the longest to stop would say its the worse of the 4, but you not saying what mode each of the bikes were in because the ABS on all 4 is adjustable doesn't do the test any good. You riding the bike in street vs sport makes a big difference in how the ABS engages.

      Given that we were on the press launch for the 1290 SuperDuke GT which makes 173hp and one of KTM's main points was that it made the same power as the supernaked, we're pretty confident 173hp is the correct 'claimed' figure. Also, look up any top speed run of the 1290 on TH-cam and the bike indicates up to 299kph which is closer to 180mph. For the record, all of the bikes were tested in their sportiest mode.

      Well then someone misrepresented it to you there because the GT makes 173 HP the R makes 180 HP. Every review from 2014 when the bike came out says 180 HP and the bike hasn't changed since.

      Well that's the funny part. I would say... turn everything on, take a passenger and go ride on RAIN mode for 8 hours... I never EVER had any bike of which I could ride 8 hours... stop at a car wash... and went for the local harbor to have a couple of more hours of fun...

      what you mean not related, the ad is runing and then the guys come here on this episode and tested bikes with different cans , they both have obviously different weights and give opinions on how the bike was "unstable at high speed " .. the Triumph wins the impossible and after that the commercial runs in again .. how is all of this not related?

      What you want from naked bike actually a character and soul. BMW being too German which good if you statistics reader. No one will choose to visit Munich over Paris. If you know what I mean. You want performance to be deciding factors.. welcome to superbike category.

    Always interesting hearing other people views. I've actually been on an MT10 demo today, had it for 4 hours while my MT09 was being serviced. I thought quite the opposite to BW, it felt unexciting on acceleration, a little heavy in the corners, the brakes lacked bite, and it's very cheap looking up close...truthfully I got bored on it. There's lots to like though, like the price, you do get a lot of bike for £10k, it's comfortable and the suspension did a good job of the UK roads. Thought I was interesting at the beginning how the guy said what a cracking bike the s1000r was, that it had character and basically praised it to high heaven then at the end on the beach agreed that it was clinical, and didn't leave a lasting impression, which contradicted what he said earlier. Another point was that you walk away and don't look back..what and you do with the MT and the Speed...please. Sorry but this felt like an MCN review...which is bullshit. Please don't go down the MCN route.

      Lol dude... The Brembo's of the SD1290R outclass those of the S1000RR.
      The ABS on my SD1290R learned me one thing... if it has to interfere it's because I'm fucking up, making mistakes or need to review my techniques... not the other way around.

      Had the same thing... accelerated on SPORT mode out of a corner while still in a rather deep angle...
      The ABS and traction control blinked, the steering damper saved my life and my buddy on the S1000RR HP4 said: 'you know... when Jebus takes the weel'.
      Which is pretty much the best description of the ABS and traction control on the KTM SD I ever heard.

    Is rider weight taken into account? The larger gent is probably a good 40 lb heavier than the other. Why discuss bike weights when the difference is 10-20 lb, and not the other weight factor? BMW also seemed to receive the most accolades during the testing, but the triple was chosen to compete with the Mt-10, confused as to the reasoning.

    I went from an older Yamaha SRX6 to a Yamaha MT10 and love it. Soooo Much power its scary , It took me 2 weeks to take it out of touring mode and into sport. I have not touched race mode yet.

    After riding the Speed Triple, the seating position on the Speed triple is more like a sport bike not a naked bike (pegs are WAY to high on the speed triple and im only 5'11), as where the MT10 is much more up right and comfortable to ride than the Speed Triple. Not sure why they did not mention this in their review.

      @@joelg2751 Not true, the triumph 'only' has 138HP (@13:56). Think they left out the kawa purely because they could not get their hands on it. Same goes for the Tuono.

    When in doubt always chose the Japanese bike always more reliable and cheaper to own in the long run. I know this is an old test but very well done and the bikes haven't changed that much, great test, thanks helped me to make up my mind, I know what I'm buying.

    The KTM is super refined, smooth, fast, comfy etc and is special. I get tons of thumbs up and compliments, not that i really care about that stuff, but it is nice and worth it for the smiles and noise it makes. And way to not have the 1200R or the tuono rsv4

    Great test! There are so many comparisons on youtube between those bikes and I appreciate that you bring something different like dragracing and break testing. Don't forget to mention that the package for the BMW adds to the price.
    1290 is the best for the street in my opinion.

      To me the SD1290R is a unique experience. Not because of the hillbilly torque or whatever but this bike is just engineer so amazingly well. The rims, the brembo brake system, the quickshifter, the black led light, that AMAZING WP suspension... Even when driving slowly this bike is putting a smile on your face like no other of these shitbikes in this review will.

      Really like the instrumentation and menus as well (big analogue tacho). Riding position is nice. Narrow design between your legs with the v-twin. Orange frame looks awesome. Amazing throttle feel, its so precise yet smooth. Its as if the 690 smc-r and RC8 had a child xD Front Led DRL looks so good too. The included toolkit is good too, really easy to adjust the chain tension which I did 2 weeks back. Yes the rims have a great quality feel, all paint is solid too.

    I've ridden the Super Duke and Speed triple. I currently own a MV dragster RR and would put it against both of these bikes on looks, acceleration, braking and the thrill factor anyday of the week. I will say that the speed is a better all around bike though.

      If you know the 0-60 or quarter mile time of the bike then time your speech it can be done.

    Great comparison video, it isn’t just about top speed or peak HP. You’re talking about the things that most ordinary riders value in a super-naked. I personally own the Speed Triple and love it for its style, comfort, and torquey “whistling” engine. But the MT10 is a fabulous bike. The BMW is great if a little blah. I’m not a fan of the KTM styling or pricing.

    I've been on 4 cylinder bikes for the last 15 years. I took a test ride on a Monster 1200 and the Super Duke R. I've sold my last 4 cylinder bike since then hahaha. I'm saving up for a Super Duke R.

    First off thanks for the awesome content!
    Of course it's quite tough to get the whole spectrum of bikes in the category but maybe there will be a part 2 ;)
    the one thing the surprised me is the brake test. Having ridden all most of the supernaked, the MT-10 was definitely the one who was feeling like it had sluggish brakes.
    Where all the other bikes in the most aggressive mode? The ABS setting vary greatly depending on the mode.
    PS: great control at the drag lunches, theses beasts usually won't keep the front wheel on the ground.

    The quick stop test on the KTM is possibly subjective due to the various tweaks you can do with the settings on ABS/TCS and so on.

    I loved the review and the tests and feel in the real world these tests are relevant. I've always felt a well set up Harley is all you really need to learn to ride fast and in some respects this is still true until this bike come along. Your review made me feel this bike is my next bike, basic electronics that work well, great riding position, noise from the engine, price point and the list goes on. The test bike was exactly what's been said and I felt right at home. With the skills I've picked up doing the Stay Upright coarse at Lakeside raceway and the many miles on a Harley this bike feels like the next level of performance and handling on a motorbike I don't have to modify at all. Wheel standing out of corners is a little different to drifting out of corners but I'll get used to that. I'm f3cking excited. I pick up my new MT-10 in all black this week with only two mods, a tidy tail and stone protector grills for the radiator and cooler.

      Steve C If you look at dye charts, and the spec sheets the 1190sx actually put down more hp than both the tune, and 1290r. The thing about the EBR is it has very tall gearing, and weighs less than all of the bikes in the video.

      I think we're splitting hairs, but I can think of several things about the EBR that turn me off... one major one is their track record.

      Steve C I could say the same for KTM and their track record of basically being expensive piles of shit that do nothing but break, and catch on fire while simultaneously costing thousands more, and getting a machine that is no better than any other bike. Or I could point out that the BMW is stupidly expensive, and while they have a great reliability reputation, they are so insanely fucking expensive, and every little part requires an expensive special tool. Oh, and lets not forget aprilia... Well I actually quite like aprilia so i will let that one slide.

    If you enter the “Super Motard”-mode on the SDR the braking would be very different. The ABS kicks in way too early as the rear wheel gets light.

    How come no one mentions headlights in reviews? The lights on my Speed are terrible and I ride at night a lot. Are the new ones still bad? Are the LEDs on the MT-10 good or are they too small? How does the cruise on the MT-10 work? The Speed doesn't have that either.

    Interesting test, how exactly do you to compare 4 bikes and only take 2 on the road test and then come up with the MT10 as a winner simply because the 1290 didn't do well in the ABS test which was only run once? There are a few variables to consider like tire temps etc? How do you know how the test bikes compare in real world riding with for instance ABS and traction control off and on? What about the hooligan factor, some wheelies and fun stuff, that's why most of us buy them right? On what bike will you have the most fun?? That's the bike you ultimately going to buy!!!

    I am a brand new rider and I have a dumb question. At 7:19 it looks as if he's forcing his knee down and that the bike isn't leaning no way near enough for the knee to be anywhere near the ground. As if the knee down is the goal, not a result of good cornering. So my question is; am I stupid and wrong or am I correct?
