DON’T Buy a Rolex Daytona Until You See This

  • The Daytona is not just one of Rolex’s, but luxury watchmaking’s, most popular watches. Despite its not inconsiderable £10,500 price-that’s more expensive than the cheapest new car on sale today, the Dacia Sandero-it flies off shelves like its more valuable than gold. Which it is. By double. People will spend that and more fighting to own this legend of a watch, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Here are five annoying things about the Rolex Daytona.

  • @stewester
    @stewester 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Two more...
    1. Why are there crown guards when the crown is protected by the pushers anyway, yet the pushers don't have any protection themselves?
    2. The minute counter (right subdial) does not have hashes for every minute, so '9' for example is 'not quite 10', rather than having a hash of its own. Irrelevant for 99% of current owners, but would be unacceptable back in the day when chronographs were actually used and needed to be accurately read.

    • @herbderb
      @herbderb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your #2 is irrelevant. The minute counter jumps to the next minute. So 9 would be obvious even without it's own hash mark. If it's between 8 and 10 it is absolutely on 9. That means 9 minutes have elapsed and however many seconds the chrono seconds has counted. (I agree completely with point 1 though!) :)

    • @stewester
      @stewester 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@herbderb I know you can somewhat infer it but that's not the point; it's suboptimal in terms of legibility and there's no logical reason for it other than some misguided aesthetic purpose.
      The very first hash on the minute counter actually indicates two minutes have elapsed - that's just nonsensical in any world where legibility at a glance is of any concern.

    • @mccstuff
      @mccstuff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't see how anyone could argue that Omega doesn't make a better watch than Rolex, if investment value is taken out of the equation... a simple watch to watch comparison...
      I tried some Rolex and ended up going with the Omega Aqua Terra, it was simply a better watch in every way possible that I could come up with than the Rolex... this was a few years ago before prices got insane, do I wish I had gotten the Rolex... maybe, but if so it would be to resell and buy two Omegas. Lol. I've always been underwhelmed when I've tried on Rolex.
      If Omega underproduced their watches like Rolex and made some artificial scarcity, and advertised more, their brand image would go up just like Rolex and there would be hype and desire and crazy prices for their watches. Rolex does the same thing Nike does with Air Jordan's. Or Supreme with their releases... they make a good watch but overall it's mostly hype.

I set aside 3 days to walk all over and try to find an acceptable deal in Fall 2019. My timing was lucky, because soon after I bought the watch, Hodinkee ran an article announcing “watch deals to be had right now in Hong Kong!” At the time, the piece I bought for 16,600 USD seemed like a decadent overpayment. I put on my $75 Pagani Design “Daytona” with a Seiko Mecha-Quartz movement. I had a good laugh when you complained about the lack of a date on the original, as my very satisfying homage has one nestled in between 4 and 5. All the things I dislike about my Pagani are inherited from the Daytona: needless screw-down pushers, polish center links, low legibility(I have the white faced model).

    • @RobDaCajun

    I always wanted a Zenith El-Primero powered Daytona, but went for a vintage Ebel 1911 Chronograph instead. You get the Zenith movement running at full speed 36000vph instead of Rolex’s downgraded version, and the date remains functional on it as well. All of that at a fraction of the cost of the Daytona despite having a superior movement. The Daytona is a nice looking watch for sure though, and exclusive.

    You nailed it again, but you missed one, it's not the easiest watch to read. I know we don't wear them to tell the time do we. But it would be nice. If I could make a suggestion. IF I had one and yes I want one. I would keep it clean with a soft toothbrush and a miid detergent. I have a small Breitling Chronographs Cockpit with lots of nooks and crannies and cleans up nicely using this method. When I bought mine it sat in a secondhand dealer window in a plethora of about 60 watches including Brands and models that were all in the heavy hitter league and some of which are 3 or 4 times the cost of this today. It was the only one that called out at me- the rest were just a background blur. I went in and bought it. I could care less for marketing, hype, prices or what others thought. I knew nothing of them and could give two hoots today like then. Personally they are a mesmerising masterpiece. I’ve since added a JLC or two and a vintage KS all by the same method of selection. I pity those who need telling what to buy or need for some validation issues or because it’s flavour of the month. Good grief.
