Rolex Daytona: A Look Behind The Hype | A Week On The Wrist

  • The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona represents many different things to many different people, but one of the most common reactions to the watch is frustration. How this came to be is a story that goes back decades, all the way to the year 1963, when the first Cosmograph chronograph was introduced. The first Cosmograph, the ref. 6239, wasn't a hit straight out of the gate for Rolex - in fact, it sold sluggishly at first. However, in the 57 years between the launch of the 6239 and the writing of this story, the watch has undergone a tremendous technical evolution as well, making the new version of the Daytona the most advanced chronograph Rolex has ever produced - by a considerable margin.
    How, therefore, did the Daytona come to be what it is today, and how can the evolution of the watch help explain its popularity? HODINKEE Editor-In-Chief Jack Forster takes a deep look at the latest version of the purist's Daytona: the steel-on-steel ref. 116500LN.

      alongside a lot of casios... Its actually the Rolex brand that provides hype to the Daytona, other wise it would not be such a speculative item. Production standard is equal to a Speedmaster but price and organized shortages are just a marketing strategy to increase artificially the watch value. It is nowhere near the legitimate heritage of the submariner line that almost defined the reference style and specs for all dives watches to follow.

      @@npcforyou What are you comparing it too when you consider it overpriced though? Find me another automatic chronograph, with as much pedigree, and from a brand as valued as Rolex that comes in at 40mm and 12.2mm thick for $15.5K CAD. You won't. The Daytona is often compared to the Speedmaster and sure, the Speedy is about 40% the price of a new Daytona. However, by all quantifiable measurements, i.e. technical watch specs, the Daytona is a better watch in every conceivable way. So I'm just curious as to what you're comparing the Daytona to when you say it's overpriced. If you're referring to the price on the secondary market, then yes I completely agree. I would choose to be patient and wait for it to come at an AD.

    • @michaelfleming8490
      @michaelfleming8490 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@npcforyou “Fabricated” shortages is one of the most perpetuated myths in the watch collecting community. The reason there are shortages is because when the steel, sports watch popularity exploded about 6 or 7 years ago, Rolex chose not to ramp up production to meet the demand. Why? Because they are a not-for-profit company that is owned and operated by a family trust and charity called the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Rolex is not publically traded which is why they are not obligated to release information on the operations and finances to the public. This is why they are shrouded in so much secrecy. But, this is also why they are not looking at profit margins and the bottom line. They have no shareholders to answer to and have no interest in profits. Rather Rolex’s primary focus is on building high quality watches and protecting the legacy and heritage of the company. The popularity increased but production did not. And THAT is, in fact, why there are these absurdly long waitlists at retailers. It’s not some grand conspiracy between Rolex and their authorized retailers. It’s simply a result of the business model Rolex operates within. Basic supply and demand. Nothing more, nothing less.

    It’s rather disappointing that you did not mention that the second track is wrong on the Daytona’s dial. The movement is beating at 28,800 vph, or 8 ticks per second. Yet second markers are divided by 5 slots instead of 4. So when you use the chronograph function, you actually can’t read precisely where the second hand stopped and tell what lapse of time... you timed. So long for having a precise chronograph.
    This watch surely is a great watch, but this little detail keeps the watch geek in me thinking Rolex did not design this watch to be a true chronograph but rather just a jewelry piece.

With extra 5000 EUR I traveled to India for a month and discovered the whole India and its wonderful culture, a truly priceless experience. In a way I am thankful to Rolex for making it happen, because without their marketing as a 24 year old I would never be able to experience India as I did. Plus I have the iconic chronograph on my wrist that brings smile to my face every time I look at it. Oh yes, and my 9500 EUR I converted to USD and on advice for my friend who works in Netflix I put my money into Netflix shares that are now almost 50% up since I bought them in December 2018.
