      To be fair to Rolex, it was with that sales making philosophy that it survived the quartz crisis by repositioning themselves as a luxury brand. As for Omega, it was its watchmaking DNA that led to it trying and failing to beat the Japanese at their own game and nearly ruining the company.

    • @cuestion-de-tiempo
      @cuestion-de-tiempo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoShame86 Indeed, also they didn’t have the money neither the technology to pursue new horizons, their movements were still being made by Aegler (dang still are!), this prevented them from jumping on the “new bandwagon”, however; that also married them to the same watch design for almost all models making them “classic” or rather “boring”, also Omega always tries too hard to be the more technical piece and this affects their sales and placement of products in the market, Rolex understands that watch guys are less than 1% of the buyers and targets them more hence the volume of sales.

    • @cuestion-de-tiempo

      Its less about the "shortage" and more about Rolex unwillingness to innovate. Omega, Tudor and even the holy trinity made have all some moves this year while Rolex is just sitting with the current catalog. Sure they came out with a new dial here and there but its been very lackluster overall, for example doing the bare minimal for the Explorer 2 on its 50th anniversary is just a huge missed opportunity.

    I own a Rolex and I’ll be the first to admit the brand has declined into a brand for rich hype beasts and Gucci wearing teenagers. Omega seems to be for the sophisticated and wise type who see what value is, instead of buying marked up steel Rolex pieces at 3x retail or putting on a façade at a Rolex AD to pretend you’re some high roller to have the “privilege” of buying one of their watches.

    I got into luxury watches after the Rolex decided to not sale their watches to the majority of their customers for some reasons. I have no attachments or history with Rolex. I wanted Rolex for math achievement , but they weren’t available. My wife told me about Omega. I totally fell in love with the brand’s history, engineering, and innovation. I didn’t develop any memories with Rolex. With Omega, I remember my wife and I picking out the watch together which it was her idea to get a luxury watch, my big math achievement, and I was wearing my Omega when my first son was born. I actually want to pass it down to my son. The only memory of Rolex is an insulting sale tactic where they won’t sell me a watch because I’m type of person they will sale watch to, an insane waiting list which can last four years, and is unbelievably overpriced and over hyped for what it is. I understand people who had memories with Rolex will defend it, but I have zero memories with Rolex. From my perspective, Omega is better.

    If the Seamaster 300m lost the stupid helium valve, reduced the case size to 40mm and tapered the bracelet it would be a better choice than the submariner. It is awesome quality and you are less likely to get mugged wearing it compared to a Rolex.

      In 1978 Rolex made the ref.16660 Sea-Dweller 1220m waterproof, which was only 40mm. It had a helium escape valve flush against the side of the case. How come more than 40 years on all Omegas rated over 600m need to be 42mm plus and still have that dicky wort of a helium release crown? Are we going backwards in innovation?

    One of the key recurring factors I find consistent is that Brands which are considered independent, namely A.P., Patek, Rolex, etc (and some of the smaller ones, such as F.P. Journe, De Bethune, Mb&F...) against the likes of ALS, Vacheron, JLC, Omega (owned by Richemont or Swatch Group) tend to be seen lesser than these Independent brands. Maybe the association to being owned by a corporation makes certain collectors not appreciate them as much, which is rather sad - but good for us collectors.

    I love Omega. But I love chronographs and aside from their Speedmaster Racing (40mm) and the other smaller Speedies (38mm), which are slightly outdated, most are too large and/or thick. The Seamaster Pro Chronograph now only comes in a gigantic 44mm whereas the previous one came in 41.5mm and 44mm. If they had a 41.5mm, I'd get one right away. A slightly smaller Aqua Terra Chrono GMT at 40 or 41mm would be great too.

Rolex for me, has declined in my respect , and i have been happy to rid myself of some earlier this year at ridiculously inflated prices, so that i can buy some horological pieces and still have cash over ! I also cannot stand the new watch experts with their 15k hulk investment pieces , who have no horological knowledge . Side point I have seen numerous Rolexes that have failed to sell at auction , or have sold at reserve after being rub up by auctioneers to the reserve and sold to new collectors ! I think the interest maybe waning , especially when customer service and some AD service is considered.

Their distributors stock a few very common configurations of the most common references but if you’re selecting outside of that it is completely bespoke - you pick what you want and you wait while they make YOUR watch. They also are not that expensive given all of these factors.

I looked at the GMT batman and while I did think it was a nice watch, it sorta looked cheap to me. The Omega planet ocean has a better overall presentation for way less money.
