One of the most desirable and difficult watches to actually buy at the moment is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, the most recent iteration of one of the most storied automatic chronographs in watch history. However, given the fact that a ceramic Daytona will likely trade for at least 3x retail price, it's only reasonable to take a look at some more attainable options. So in this video, I'll highlight some of the best alternatives to the Daytona on the market today, looking only at automatic watches and, as you'd expect, more affordable price points compared to the current Daytona market value. If you guys like these "alternatives" videos, be sure to comment some other watches we might use for this concept!

I find it laughable that someone would buy a Speedy with the intent of seeing it as an alternative to a Daytona. It doesn’t need to be an alternative. It is its own icon.

I agree and have said the same thing. I do not think there is any other channel that goes to the effort and lengths that Teddy does. I sort of pick at him about all of these newer watches stating in the manuals not to do this and that with them. What ever happened to buying a watch and just wearing for everything you do? Teddy has some of the best of everything for sale on his sight. But he also lets you know and honestly says I know you like this and that but if you want to do that you need this type of watch. Got hooked on these watch channels several years ago and started watching them when I was off several months for surgeries. And they have seemed to just multiply into a plethora of channels. Viewed a few from Teddy from 2017 and 2018 and he was on track then as well. I am sure that in his quiver is a watch or watches that would fit anyone's needs and wants.

@@jeffcline7689 @Jeff Cline You two gotta be kidding... for example in all the 'tutorials' or comparisons in which he's featured chronographs he hasn't once discussed central minutes hands, 12hr registers or even the pros & cons of 30, 45 & 60 minute sub dials - all essential considerations for someone who might want to time everyday events far more easily than by using a phone or smartwatch. I am waiting the new Daytona, rumored for 2023, with the tachymeter scale converted to a Viagra optimization scale, to be synched with the roofie-onset timer subdial at 3, as this is the only real-world function the modern Daytona wearer would actually have for a chronograph-- while at a Dubai disco, of course. The hour aggregator subdial would of course be converted to a suite-sterilization countdown timer for extra security.

Omega speedmaster racing, for me, is the best alternative. It offers the same general look, white dial option on stainless with a tapering bracelet that includes micro adjustability in the clasp, black ceramic bezel, and probably even better finishing than the daytona. It features an in house manufactured Co-Axial master chronometer 9900 movement, 60 hours power reserve, accurate to 0 to +5 seconds, and has the added benefit of being completely anti magnetic with it's si14 balance spring. It's honestly probably a better technical watch than the Daytona, without the ridiculous hype and gray market price that more than doubles it's MSRP cost.

While I don't think I'll be getting a Daytona anytime soon unless my AD calls, my Seiko does more than scratches the itch. I personally think Rolex is just like Apple (Iphone) in terms of sales. The reason why they're so sought after is because "Its a Rolex" or "Its Apple". One could argue the percentage of enthusiasts is not a lot. Most people buy the aforementioned brands just because most people have them- and also maybe they look good and are reliable, and I dont blame them. Idk, just a thought.

There is clearly a difference: a Rolex was, is and always will be a luxury item. As a professional I work with MacBook and iPhone because it is economical to do so. Yes, they are a bit more expensive, but from direct comparison and experience I can definitely say that over the lifecycle of four years (I am not a kid that needs the latest item each year just to feel comfortable in its peer group) you save so much in time and nerves because they work without a service nerd or maintenance guru, that I would never ever get myself an Android phone or PC. The price tag you can see on the item isn't everything you pay for.

A superlative video! I own three chronographs...the Omega Speedmaster Professional from 1971, the Lorier Gemini, and Bulova Lunar Pilot. I always considered the Speedmaster Professional and Daytona as equals.
I love the Zenith, but for my use, the 12 hour timer/register is a must-have. Frankly I don't understand a 24 hour military time register. I don't see any advantage of spending thousands more on the Hamilton and Tudor. No 12-hour register. You might as well get the superb Lorier Gemini. It's a panda and come in three colorways. It's $499 and punches way above its weight, using the fantastic Seagull ST19 manual wind movement. No, the Gemini doesn't have the 12-hour register, but it's still a terrific chronograph.
The Lorier and Bulova Lunar Pilot have been my daily drivers...with the Lunar Pilot being my favorite. Yes, I know it's a quartz, so it won't make your cut, but it has Bulova's revolutionary 262 kHz movement, that buttery-smooth chrono hand and the +-10 seconds-per-year accuracy.

Hey Teddy - loved your videos as I've gotten into the hobby. I did want to throw out a quick point on your newer studio setup that could be helpful. Right now your background is pretty overexposed. I'd recommend lowering your ISO or putting an ND filter on the lens to match the exposure to the outside light. Then I'd turn up your studio light(s) or invest in a something with a more powerful output (2x Aputure 300D, a single 600, or even some Godox VL300's) to step this up to the next level. I totally respect if this is the look you were going for, but I think it would be a little less distracting with the more even exposure and easier to watch with that change. Good luck!

All the watches you’re presenting in this video are great watches but, personally I don’t think that they are alternative watches to the Daytona. To me they are more like consolation watches. If you want a Daytona, no “lookalike” watches will satisfy you. I would have no problems owning any of those watches from your video. As a matter of act you exited my watch appetite with your video, but not as alternative to a Daytona. I don’t own any Daytona yet but I’m still hoping that I will one day. It is probably because it’s so hard to get it that we are fantasizing over it. I’m lucky to own an AP Royal Oak that I managed to buy longtime ago for a fair price, so this one is out of my dream list. Recently, with products like the B01 movement and designs like the Top Time, they seem to have upped their game in a major way. I used to think the Daytona is the best-looking sports chronograph. Now The 41mm IWC pilot chronograph in blue on the bracelet looks really tempting.

I own a Speedmaster 1863 and a Tudor Panda dial Chronograph ( I hate that term ) . The price of the Daytona is just ridiculous so unless I could but at Rolex retail I am not worried about owning one.

Great review! All of the watches you reviewed are excellent choices, however they still can't compare to the Daytona. They are all too thick, I think the Daytona is about 12.3mm? None of them come close to a Rolex bracelet. Believe me I have tried all of them on and I keep coming back to my Daytona, and Explorer II.

That Speedmaster Racing with the 9900 calibre is incredible. Leagues ahead of anything Rolex have ever built from a chronometric point of view. To say it’s the closest thing your gonna get to the Daytona from an Omega point of view is a little insulting to what Omega have achieved with their master chronometer chronograph.
