In 2016, I worked for a whole summer in a lawn mowing company. We use exactly this lawnmower. Every morning it would start up with no problem and mow about 20 residential lots. I'm oldschool, in metal it always works.

Excellent video!!! Especially the pointing out the ease of access on commercial mowers. This is because of the hard use, they require maintenance at an accelerated pace compared to a homeowner.
Bread n Butter mower of the commercial crews in DFW. So many positives, however, I do believe that the weight and the inability to fold the handles can be things for a homeowner to consider.
I would also suggest when going to purchase a used commercial mower to never lose sight that these work horses are "rode hard and put up wet" much of the time.

I have one too, except mine has a 2 cycle Suzuki engine. The great thing is I have ONE mixed gas can! The deck is a little rough, and I need to replace the wheels ($$), but it runs well. I ordered a new fuel line, fuel filter, and spark plug and will install them next week. I'll get a new muffler at some point. Mine is a push model. A bit heavy, but not drive module to go out. I put a Gator Blade on it and it is the second best mulching mower I've ever had (a Sears model, of all things, mulched better if you can believe that). But yeah, you get a workout with any of these mowers. Lifting them up to work on them is murder.

I just picked up a 1989 toro non recycler. It's powered with a tecumseh ohv engine. It has an aluminum deck with no side discharge. It has a chrome handle with 3 speeds and a turtle/rabbit throttle. It has super recycler wheels and metal backing plates on the rear wheels. It also has the blade brake option. Best of all it came with the bag. I paid $20 for this bad boy.

I have one like it... a 2 stroker! It was one of a pair a pro had for sale; in Hawaii. He bought both new for $950 each (about 10-15 yrs ago). It was lightly used, for $450. I've had it worked on a few years ago. Now it has a bit of a gas leak at the line connected to bottom of the 1 gal tank. After seeing this I think I'll ask them to work on it again. It occasionally starts on first pull.

I'm a mower enthusiast from way back. I used to flip about 20 mowers a summer and have owned probably 100 Toro aluminum deck mowers, mostly Suzuki 2 and 4 cycle. I currently own a 22176 and a 22188 (BBC, FJ180V-KAI). This deck design is my personal favorite. Its the best of all worlds. The Snapper Hi-Vac may bag better, but it doesn't mulch well. A Lawn-Boy gold series with a Duroforce may mulch well, but it won't bag well. The Deere 14SB/JX75 does both well, but you can't get the FC150 without the blade clutch. Honda is solid, but there have been a few more deck designs and not a lot of cross over. It is the best all around design, in my opinion of course.

Heavy, yes but very maneuverable. In my opinion, the best mower for me, at least. Did you get rid of the JX85? I have been looking for one to take the wheels, height adjusters, and transmission, and put them on my 12SB.

Nice score. In your Honda HRX vs Toro Super Recycler video I mentioned my 1991 Suzuki 2-cycle powered Toro Recycler cutting far better than my Honda HRX. That '91 Recycler has nearly the same deck as your commercial mower, although I assume it is a few pounds lighter. Plastic wheels too as it is a consumer model. I got the mower for free because the blade clutch was bad. It was a $70 part plus $15 for the blade belt but it went up another $12 the year after I bought it and was discontinued the year after that. I am glad I bought the replacement blade clutch when I did to keep that old mower cutting.
My mower did not come with a bag but I curb-picked one off a mower I saw in the trash. Yours should use the same bag as all the Toro commercial and consumer mowers from the late '80's up to early 2000's. Tons of those old bags out there on the cheap. I am sure you will find one before the leaves fall.

Question about the transmission. My 21” seems to not go to “neutral” when you let the bar half way down. Basically if I put it in whichever gear and then want to make a turn in neutral the rear wheels keep driving even when you let the bar down. If I keep letting it down it obviously stalls out. Anyone know if it’s an adjustment issue?

Same design but all part numbers of gears and shafts are different. I believe my 1991 Recycler has the same 3-speed transmission as your Lawn Boy. The commercial also has a grease fitting to add grease to the top of the transmission through the plastic cover.

A few months ago I looked into the parts page of Toro's current commercial mowers that cost $1,900-$2,300 and they use ball bearings on the input shaft of their 3-speed transmissions like the old consumer mowers. I can not remember if they had the grease fitting but I am thinking they did not. I am betting your cast aluminum Lawn Boy would cost $1,300-$1,500 or more if brought to market today. My 1991 cast aluminum Recycler with Suzuki 2-cycle was $550 in '91 and it did not come with a bag, you had to pay extra for it and the bagging chute/mulch plug for the chute. All that would add up to over $1,400 of todays devalued US Dollars when plugged into an inflation calculator.

Consumers keep demanding that manufacturers help them blind themselves to the devaluation of the US Dollar. Consumer Honda and Toro mowers of the early 90's cost $550-$600+, and many including the Toro Recyclers did Not come with a bag, you had to pay extra for it. I suspect as demand for fuel goes down eventually that gasoline will go down so they'll ad a $2.00 per gallon "carbon tax" to each gallon or something. They are already moving up the electric car timeline. Biden wants 60% of new car sales to be electric by 2032 now and the EPA is going to make it very hard for fuel powered vehicles to pass the standards earlier than before. They know we won't accept inferior vehicles unless they force us into it. It will slow the process some if democrats lose the majority and/or the white house but even a lot of republicans are on board with "man made climate change" and the peasants changing our lifestyles. The people in power won't change anything of course, this change is for the peasants.
