I like that 1999 model. $600 in 1999 with no bag, bagging chute, or mulch plug. That bagging kit was likely another $100-$150. Adjusted for inflation that would be upwards of $1,300 out the door in todays deflated Dollars. Toro could still build them like that, but consumers would *itch and complain to no end. Most people like to point the finger at manufactures, but consumers drive the market.
I've been watching your channel and others. I just bought a Super Recycler last week. I'm disappointed. I love the cut and the bagging. I HATE the Personal Pace drive system. My yard has several flower beds where I have to nose in and back out. The mower doesn't like to back out. My yard is also uphill and downhill. It's VERY hard to maintain a constant pace. I think I'm going back to my tried and true Snapper.
I got a new Toro Recycler in September, 2023. It broke after 1week (8-10hrs) of use. The new Briggs and Stratton engines leak oil (90% of the time I’m mowing a hill side. Yes, I go sideways not straight up and down). Then the plastic that keeps the wheel on broke. The wheel has been repaired, but the mower is still in the shop (as of 2/15). There is no word on when Briggs and Stratton will send the parts to fix the oil leak. I’ve had Toros before, but never this much problem with them.
@@GarageGearIt's an isolated case. You can pick the most reliable mower in the world and there's still a chance that atleast 1 person had problems with it. But that's one in million case. It's classic survivorship bias.
My 2006 20” no primer toro personal pace super recycler to this day will start right up on the 1st pull every time. Never had a carb problem. I recently replaced the transmission and drive belt .New air filter, plug and oil every year. I swear this mower will outlast this 73 year old guy. Take care of the mower and do the proper PMs and it will serve you well for many years.
I have a 1988 Toro Recycler with a Tecumseh engine .It has a 3 speed transmission along with the throttle control , grease fittings and starts on the first or second pull. I like the way the mower is balanced, just light pressure on the handle to lift and turn around. Newer products today lack the Quality of these "Old Toro".
I just used my new Toro for the first time and I am impressed!! It usually takes me an hour to do my backyard and about 2 hours to do my front. I just finished my backyard in 1/2 an hour! I was also worried because I am 4"11 and this mower looked big to me but I didn't have any problems😊

I've hoped to find a good used Super Recycler for years and, last week, my wife called me up and said, "Honey, there are two of them grass thingies that you like on the side of the road. Do you want 'em?". Once I figured out what she was talking about, I said "YES! Where are you!!!" 8 minutes later, I was loading a Primo1996 Toro Super Recycler (looks like it's only a year or two old) and an older Craftsman push mower into the back of my truck. The guy came out and said "They both ran when I parked them last fall and there is no gas in the tanks. I've owned them since they were new, but my wife is having a hard time using them. So I got an electric mower. You're welcome to them both." Then he started explaining his rationale for going the battery equipment route (I bet he regrets it within 2 years, if he doesn't already. Man, that's a nice mower.) That Super Recycler will be parked right beside my 2014 HRX217, and I'll repair and sell the other 7 or 8 mowers that I've managed to gather over the past summer to support my mower habit. I think I'm really starting to like other people choosing electric mowers. Thanks for the video. Had all the information that I needed!
On your older Toro, there should be a heavy black rubber handle latch spacer, Toro part 3-3287, on each of the handle latch mounting bolts. The rubber spacer goes between the deck and the handle latch. If the handle latch spacer is worn-out or missing, the handle latch won't stay on the pin further up on the handle. If you install new handle latch spacers on your older Toro, you won't need to resort to using zip ties to hold the handle latches in place. After installing the new handle latch spacers, bend the handle latches inward if needed.
I had a model 20056 SR4 that was as tough as a tank. Nothing slowed it down, and it cut beautifully mulching or bagging. Then I moved from CA to WA and found it upside down sitting on top of other furniture at the top of the moving truck trailer when they opened the doors. That pretty much killed the engine, so I got rid of it. I should have just repowered it. That was about the peak for Toro in my opinion.
After JB's helpful video last week I decided to put a bit of $$$ into my old John Deere push mower (heavy to PUSH) mower I must say and 23 years old. That’s a great machine. The Toro engine on it has crank bearings instead of the usual bushings as well as a cast iron cylinder liner and triple piston rings 💪🏻
I found a 1995 Murray free that someone put out to get rid of. I put my high metal wheels and carburetor on it from my 1994 Murray push mower. Runs great. I resolved my cracked deck, carburetor held on by 1 bolt, broken handle and loose muffler.
Will (Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) (for new Toro TimeMaster mowers) fit on new Toro AWD 21472 mower? Both have same mounting holes and baby carriage shape.
@@GarageGear Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape. After looking for weeks for a good cond used Toro, I’ve decided to go new. I’ve narrowed it down to the SR 21565 & this, 21564. I have read quite a bit of mixed reviews as well on the 190cc engine that the 21564 model has that you mentioned. I ended up going with my model and it has the same engine as the updated 21565 model (163cc) and I can definitely say that I have never had an issue with it and it runs very strong and smooth! Question for you JB. Is REC-90 ethanol free ok to use in modern Toro and Honda lawnmowers? I can get it from Mobil gas station near me. I hadn't heard of REC-90 until I looked it up. I'm trying to move away from E10 from Costco for my mowers.
No mention of the bulletproof flat top engine on the older model? My 1999 Recycler GTS 6.0 model 20023 ($299 @ HD back then) has gone to hell and back and won't quit. Only 2 oil changes and 2 air filters in 25 years. Still on the original spark plug. 3 primer pumps and it starts on the 1st pull - always. It's a beast.
If my deck/frame ever rots away, I’m unbolting my 1998 Briggs 6.5hp and mounting it on another deck. I don’t care how much fabrication it involves. One pull starting every time for 25 years!
Like where your head is at Paul! I’ve seen these older toro decks on eBay before! Brand new for about $150 hundred bucks. How could you go wrong? Have a good weekend brother! 👍
that's how I got my 6.0 Craftsman B & S Quantum. Left at the curb, loose blade, plugged air filter fouled sparkplug. Put it on my Snapper deck. 13 years ago. Engine's from April 2000. Best lawn power ever. Never getting rid of it.
Do you think you’ll ever get a newer commercial toro or a scag 21in? It would be interesting for home owners who want something that they will never have to replace or people starting a business
I have thought a lot about this. My next mowers may be commercial grade. I have always wanted a commercial toro with a Honda engine on it. Looked at a few other brands too!
@Veilside Brice Good machines are still built, but you got to pay for them. The least expensive quality mower on the current market is the commercial Honda HRC at about $1,400. Toro's commercial 21's go for $1,800+. Those mowers would last the average homeowner 20-30yrs. Consumers drive the market and they demand manufactures build them cheap *hit.
I repowered my 2007 Super Recycler with a new 7.25 hp Briggs motor with the plastic carb. Haven't had issues with E-10 premium fuel and the plastic carb has a cartridge jet kit for an easy rebuild. I've had metal carbs give me issues with rust in the bowl. I think the plastic is underrated.
@@GarageGear we have a shorter off season here in Central Virginia (South Richmond area) but I can see up North having issues with that carb cartridge clogging with bad fuel as it sets longer.
You know you’ve reached peak dad-level when you’re watching lawnmower videos 😅. Great comparison, JB! You can’t go wrong with either one IMO. I love the reliability of the older stuff but the newer ones look like 10X sexier. 😆
I'm glad I bought my super recycler right before the design changes. I recently picked up a 2016 electric start recycler from the original owner with the briggs 190cc engine. It gives my super recycler and run for its money.
To me, the best Super recycler is the SR4 lineup that ran from 2005-2020. The deck was robust, and had all the features that made the mower what it was. I love my 20382, which has the older deck and a Honda engine.
1. Can you adjust the RPM on the new ones? My old one I could with a spring and a tachometer and brought it to a proper RPM and it bagged a lot better. 2. I bag only. Are the kickers removable?
Hey Jacky’ I suppose if you took the engine apart you could adjust the rpm but I haven’t tried. I believe you can unscrew the kickers from the top of the deck.
@@GarageGear Thanks for the reply. So it sounds like you are telling me that it isn't quite as easy as replacing or trimming a spring, or bending a tab anymore.
Hey grass snake I have see people drill a hole into the deck and bolt the height adjuster in place so it wouldn’t move. Other than that you can sometimes find a new deck on eBay. The swap may take a bit but it will be a like a new mower when you’re done.
212 likes now Jared. Maybe Toro will make some of the changes you suggest on their 2024 models. I hope one change is a PowerReverse that would make it easy to turn it around. I like the Smart-Stow. The other day I cut my backyard and it still feels like I am pushing it. How long does it take you to make these excellent edited reviews?
Hey Gregory! We can only hope right? Between scripting, filming, editing, and uploading each video takes about 10 hours per week depending on the length of the video. 👍
@@GarageGear I bought my smart stow in 2021. It bagged great but then last year I stopped bagging as much. Had trouble bagging this year and I checked all around for blockages but didn't find any.
The Robin engine on my 25 year old Snapper recently died. I investigated the Super Recycler and the equivalent Honda. After looking at the prices on these machines I decided to repower my Snapper with a Honda GXV 160.
In this current economy, it's best to learn how to maintain your equipment, prices aren't going down...but up! All my equipment is in the high teens and is going strong. Only try and purchase oem parts and use non-ethanol gas.
Electric start via wall plug or separate dc source eliminates the battery dead weight. Tecumseh is the bees knees although many people will try to punch you for saying that. They have their own precautionary tales im sure. But Tecumseh was the only brand with an oil pump. Aluminum decks aren't good IF you mow rocks. ❤
I wonder if Toro will reach out to you at some point. In a variety of videos now, you’ve successfully made the case for them to seriously rethink what they’ve been doing lately.
I know Honda's days are numbered, but I'm still a Honda fan. I have an HRX217 with the 200cc engine that's about a year old that that thing can go though some serious St. Aug. Starts up quick, runs great and plenty of power. I'm still a Honda fan.
Huh? No throttle control on newers? Thats just silly, atleast i run my 21 year old machine on minimum throttle especially when cold, to save on fuel and to warm the engine. Tbh i only use the full throttle in tall grass when it starts to bog otherwise
I don’t think the new Briggs can compare to the old one which I’m sure was USA made, not the new one. I’m not a fan of the personal pace, I like a consistent drive…imo. Great review on both JB! What’s up for the weekend? Cheers neighbor!
Just subscribed, been watching you’re channel for a bit and it’s definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen. Absolutely enjoy they way you break things down. Keep it up.
You might want to do a CA series for our friends in CA that are about to lose the ability to buy a new gas mower, riding mower, blower, string trimmer, etc. What they should buy now if it's close to time to replace something and how to keep these things going until the Democrats lose power in CA which is the 15th of never, so basically how to keep them going as long as possible or until battery technology catches up to fuel technology which might be in a few years or it might be the 15th of never.
It depends on how well you take care of your equipment. I switched over all my lawn equipment to battery between Stihl and Toro. The SR is the best electric mower bar none.
The plastic carb is actually better than than the aluminum, they don't rot like the aluminum does and clean very easily. I have the super recycler but has the Suzuki two stroke with the BBC ,best mower ever.

@@colinklang- The plastic carbs are actually easy to work on and cheap. The problem is the jet is so small it gets clogged too easy. I'd be more worried about the new Briggs engine drinking oil and the engine burning up .
You are much better off buying the old Toro. The Toro recycler is the worst lawn mower our family has ever purchased. We bought it in 2010 and IT NEVER WORKED GOOD FROM THE TIME WE PURCHASED IT BRAND NEW AND CAREFULLY TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX.
Face it it`s not just TORO but everything made today is built to not last
Very true my friend!
@Veilside Brice everything is disposable
I would have to totally agree with that
The new Stihl mowers and Hondas are sooooo much better...
Good info Chuck! Thanks for sharing
@@GarageGear we have a shorter off season here in Central Virginia (South Richmond area) but I can see up North having issues with that carb cartridge clogging with bad fuel as it sets longer.
@@chuckgladfelter yeah we go about a good 5-6 months without using it
Just up the rpm on the old Toro by adjusting the govern rod. They are a mowing mule when you do that.
Thanks for sharing adrian
You know you’ve reached peak dad-level when you’re watching lawnmower videos 😅. Great comparison, JB! You can’t go wrong with either one IMO. I love the reliability of the older stuff but the newer ones look like 10X sexier. 😆
Hey guy! Can’t beat the reliability of the older stuff! Thanks for watching bud!
Those old flathead quantum engines are hard to beat. Super reliable and so easy to work on.
Definitely super reliable! Thanks for watching matticus!
I'm glad I bought my super recycler right before the design changes. I recently picked up a 2016 electric start recycler from the original owner with the briggs 190cc engine. It gives my super recycler and run for its money.
Awesome John! Thanks for sharing
To me, the best Super recycler is the SR4 lineup that ran from 2005-2020. The deck was robust, and had all the features that made the mower what it was. I love my 20382, which has the older deck and a Honda engine.
Those are great mowers! Thanks for sharing
@@jackt6112 No definitely not as easy! You’re gonna have to move some things around.
👍
I tried an older toro but it would fall due to height adjustment being worn on the deck. Is there a fix for that?
Hey grass snake I have see people drill a hole into the deck and bolt the height adjuster in place so it wouldn’t move. Other than that you can sometimes find a new deck on eBay. The swap may take a bit but it will be a like a new mower when you’re done.
How do you make the 1999 super recycler into a side chute discharge? Video please? Part number for adapter?
It requires a side discharge chute attachment. They don’t make them anymore. Very hard to find them!
@@GarageGear WOW!! you sure do a great job of it Jared
Another video with great information for folks looking at purchasing a mower in the current economy!!!
Always thinking about those looking to go used over new. Appreciate you gls! Thanks for watching as always!
Old = Great build quality! New = Looks sharp!
Spot on Flint! Have a good week my friend!
Mine stopped bagging. I cleaned the bag out and I'm using the same blade but I can't get it to bag.
Are you using the old or the new model?
@@GarageGear I bought my smart stow in 2021. It bagged great but then last year I stopped bagging as much. Had trouble bagging this year and I checked all around for blockages but didn't find any.
@@MrErpman you took the mulch plug out correct. If so I wonder if it’s time for a new blade.
@@GarageGear No mulch plug and I have a new blade. Really weird. I think the bag is leaking because it doesn't fit flush against the deck in back.
@@MrErpman sounds like a very odd situation that I would probably have to see first hand.
Nice early 2000 machine. Still have mine next to the black 2020 SR.
About the sputtering: the spark plug gap is very crucial.
The gap is definitely critical! Thanks for watching skyemac!
The Robin engine on my 25 year old Snapper recently died. I investigated the Super Recycler and the equivalent Honda. After looking at the prices on these machines I decided to repower my Snapper with a Honda GXV 160.
Sounds like a good plan!
Still using my 1993 Toro 20320 Recycler.
Keep using it! Wow that’s awesome!
Just picked up a 2004 Super Recycler. Pumped!
Awesome! Hope you like it
In this current economy, it's best to learn how to maintain your equipment, prices aren't going down...but up! All my equipment is in the high teens and is going strong. Only try and purchase oem parts and use non-ethanol gas.
💯 agree my friend!
Thanks for sharing and for watching!
I wonder if Toro will reach out to you at some point. In a variety of videos now, you’ve successfully made the case for them to seriously rethink what they’ve been doing lately.
Hey b2! We’ll see! Ariens just reached out to me about their newest mower! We’ll see where that goes! 👍
I know Honda's days are numbered, but I'm still a Honda fan. I have an HRX217 with the 200cc engine that's about a year old that that thing can go though some serious St. Aug. Starts up quick, runs great and plenty of power. I'm still a Honda fan.
Can’t go wrong with a Honda! 👍thanks for watching Ryan.
Huh? No throttle control on newers? Thats just silly, atleast i run my 21 year old machine on minimum throttle especially when cold, to save on fuel and to warm the engine.
Tbh i only use the full throttle in tall grass when it starts to bog otherwise
Thanks for sharing average!
I don’t think the new Briggs can compare to the old one which I’m sure was USA made, not the new one. I’m not a fan of the personal pace, I like a consistent drive…imo. Great review on both JB! What’s up for the weekend? Cheers neighbor!
Great minds think alike my friend! Celebrating Father’s Day and happy Father’s Day to you bud! What do you got going on?
Happy Father's Day to you as well! Just picked up the Grandsons for a bit. Maybe bbq something later!
The new version looks cool, the old version is all business. I'll take the old one.
💯agree Smallblock! The only way to get this kind of quality now is to go full blown commercial grade. Have a good weekend my friend!
Just subscribed, been watching you’re channel for a bit and it’s definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen. Absolutely enjoy they way you break things down. Keep it up.
Appreciate you Juan! Thanks for being a cool fan! 👍
I love the video brother. Great comparison
Appreciate you brother! 👍 hope all is well on your end!
@@GarageGear thank you 👍
I like the older mowers better. 👍🙏👍🙏
💯agree!
Older is better! And I'm not just saying that because I'm old.
Wait, yes I am.
Older is the way to go! What’s going on this weekend Mace?
@@GarageGear Just gettin' old, JB! Have a good one!
Not a bad idea either ! Thank you clearance man!
*Garage Gear* New Sub, enjoying your content. GOD Bless.
Thanks for subscribing rebar!
@@GarageGear You bet !
It depends on how well you take care of your equipment. I switched over all my lawn equipment to battery between Stihl and Toro. The SR is the best electric mower bar none.
Thanks for sharing
yes...
💯 agree
This is exactly what I wondered. The reviews aren't great on the new ones. Worse than the recycler which is about $450 instead of $800
A lot of people are asking for a review of the toro recycler next go around
@@GarageGear Good idea, with Honda exiting the market along with the HRN, the recycler may end up being the top mid priced gas model in the USA.
@@Clearanceman2 you may be onto something here!
I will take the new one, bottom I use what I can get.
Thanks for watching Daisy!👍
The plastic carb is actually better than than the aluminum, they don't rot like the aluminum does and clean very easily. I have the super recycler but has the Suzuki two stroke with the BBC ,best mower ever.
Thanks for sharing this MU!
I'd give my left nut to find a 2016 super recycler in good shape. I liked my old mower better.
Keep an eye out! You’ll see one at some point! 👍
I work on both, the older toro is by far the best, I really like the SR4 model with the personal pace but still the quantum briggs, that's my personal mower, with working keystart, don't ever sell that older toro, you will be sorry if you do.
Awesome mower you have there knighthawk! Totally agree!
I think I’ll keep my 2005 Toro Super Recycler 20055. I’m really not a fan of the new line up from Toro.
I would do the same! 👍👍
If you put 91 octane non ethical gas in a B&S engine they will run forever trouble free.
RIGHT ON! 👍
plastic carburetor. what the HELL!? (do they sell a metal one you can replace it with? )
As far as I know… no. Thanks for watching Burton
The newer ohv engine gots more torque, runs quieter and runs cleaner

Most Briggs and Stratton engines are made in China now days
It’s a different world nowadays!
Aw man i just bought the new super recycler today from seeing your other video 😂
Ha oh well! Lol congrats on your purchase Christian! 👍
@@GarageGear Thanks man! I got the same exact one you got with the electric start and all. Gonna do the engine break-in you recommended once it comes in. Keep up the great videos!
@@christianmenchaca5527 smart to do so! Will do my friend! 👍
5 years ago toro was better. Steel transaxles and cast carbs. Now all plastics garbage. Even the new personal pace design is crap. Bring back the good ole Toro equipment.
@@Doobie2100 fully agree
I agree with you. Toro has gone done hill.
They sure have!
How many times did you say metal?? Case closed
Lol case closed! 👍😂
Sooo.... I have the same mower from 1998 and it doesn't have electric start, wanna sell me your starter? I have weak shoulders and can't start mine anymore, neither can my 10 year old. I really don't want to buy a new mower just to have electric start.
If you can find a starter for the thing grab it, so that way you can start it up nice and easy!
Do you know which one? Can you provide a link or part number?
@@grandprixgtp2001 I don’t know which one off hand. You’ll have to search for one based on your mower’s model number online.
Rwd mowers with small wheels never made much sense
Thanks for watching gvi!
Been working great for me for 15 years.
Why can't they make a decent product.
They gotta make money off of us somehow. Build them cheap and eventually you’ll need a new one
Made the same mistake and got rid of my old Toro for a new 2023 model What a mistake Toro is absolute junk Do yourself a favor and buy anything but Toro.
Toro quality has gone way down over the years
I saw the plastic carb. Nope. That's junk.
@@colinklang- The plastic carbs are actually easy to work on and cheap. The problem is the jet is so small it gets clogged too easy. I'd be more worried about the new Briggs engine drinking oil and the engine burning up .
My exmark metro 26 is a beast compared to that Toro recycler
Thanks for sharing
You are much better off buying the old Toro. The Toro recycler is the worst lawn mower our family has ever purchased. We bought it in 2010 and IT NEVER WORKED GOOD FROM THE TIME WE PURCHASED IT BRAND NEW AND CAREFULLY TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX.
It did not work even after changing the blade, oil, clearing the filter, inspection. All it did from day one is bog, clog, and stall and leave huge clumps 😡🔥👎 The trash-picked 4.0 hp Craftsman no self propel lawn mower never bogged, clogged, or stalled one time and is still in use today. It sipped gasoline instead of guzzling it and blowing the exhaust in your face which the Toro mower did.
Thanks for sharing this information Rick!
I have a battery operated Ryobi lawn mower...I will never never go back to a gas mower evervagain
