I have a @ 2006 Toro recycler. B&S engine. Last year I replaced the personal pace transmission and drive belt. Deck is in great shape as I use the wash port almost all the time and do yearly pm maintenance ( plug, air and fuel filters, oil, lube cables, ethanol free fuel when possible and Stabil added) This mower STILL starts on the 1st pull. Take care of your mower and it will reward you with many years of service.
I’ve owned the Honda for 1 year and it’s a beast. We don’t have a flat front yard and the select drive it super helpful. 1 pull start yet. Mulch option always. Super pleased with it. Also, every day I use it I clean it. Great video JB!!
I love my toro 2020 21385 super recycler. Being a honda fan boy with 4 honda cars i looked at the hrx but some of the negative reviews i read kept me from pulling the trigger. Im glad i purchased my toro befor the design change and price increase.I went with the toro branded engine cause of the sputtering issues with the briggs. I have no regrets. I just bought the toro sr mulching blade to test out.
Yup. 2020 is like a distant memory now. Prices were still within the universe. That's the Loncin engine right? Black top? Toro needs to up the ante and the consumer needs at least 170 ccs on a mulching mower. 150 can chug in the deep stuff. How's the power. Toro usually uses straight blades for whatever reason.
I haven't even put it on yet. I been bagging my clippings cause disease pressure is high from weather conditions. Hopefully I can put it to use in the fall.
Great comparison! I have the 2020 version (pre Vortex deck) of this Super Recycler, and my engine does sputter sometimes. Bought it over the HRX because of the stow-n-go (not much storage space at my house), maneuverability, and the shock absorbing handles that are good for bumpy yards. I mostly enjoy it and do not regret the purchase. Mulching quality is right on par with the mid-90s HRB215 and early 2010s HRN that I had prior to that. The 190cc Briggs has what feels like double the power of the standard HRN 160cc Honda motors. My grass is healthy and very thick, and the Briggs has never once stalled on me. The 1990s machine I'd get to stall maybe 1-2x a year, the 160cc HRN, more like 1-2x per mow lol one big con vs the plastic deck Hondas is the amount of grass build up I get, but I guess I would say it's not any worse than the steel deck Honda I had prior to this one.
I bought the Super Recycler. Can't complain. I have a 190cc Smart Stow already from 2016. The new one cuts much better, but my first one works fine and starts on first pull. The Smart Stow sold me. My two lawnmowers take up less space than 1 conventional lawnmowers.
Honda! or any budget lawn mower that has a honda engine on its deck, MTD and troy built use to come with honda engines at a affordable price. At 4:11 into the video I hate those drag flaps, I always take them off my personal mowers.
I’ve had my HRX217 since 2009, change oil, change filter once a year. Changed blades & rear tires once. Starts on first pull, still looks new. Mow yard every 4days during growing season.
May 2024, Honda has stopped making Lawn Mowers. I just called a local dealer, they have two left and I scored the HRX217VKA model! I'll be picking it up early next week. This video helped solidify my decision to go with Honda. I have a mower I bought about 5 years ago and am gifting it to my son. It's a Briggs and Straton engine (as most are) but at every mow it hesitates! The engine likely needs to be tuned up.
I have had this exact Honda for 3 years. Absolute best push mower on the market. Now I read the manual but either I forgot or I'm a little dumb. Didn't realize it rear discharges until just the other day. 😅 I don't bag and prefer mulching anyway. But the grass is crazy here. It would struggle a little mulching 2 foot high grass but not discharging. Love this mower. Half assed pull and she starts.
I have the Honda and while it is a great mower, it's not good on slopes and backing up. I also have to sharpen the blades a lot and have changed them 3 times in the last 10 years. I have a lawn service that sprays so the grass is rather thick. I'm currently looking for a riding mower as the slopes in my yard are getting kind of difficult on this 69 year old...
@jzm6403 I totally understand. I had back surgery, thanks to an accident, a few months ago and I am half your age. I actually think I just found a project JD X495 for cheap. I have no hills here in Coastal Texas. But grew up with them. Anything over a couple thousand Sqft ya need a lawn tractor. I've been pushing 25K for long enough
I have both. For me it's Honda all day. Build quality, engine power and reliability, mulch cut, drive train. Only thing i like better on Toro is the blade clutch enabling me to drive the mower to different areas i cut in my yard at different heights without mowing.
Honda has a version of both the HRX217 and the HRN216(and the older version of the HRN the HRR216) that have blade clutch, Honda calls it Roto Stop. But only on the more expensive versions of the models.
I like the Honda mower because they have blade controls where you can push with the motor on without the blades spinning plus they start up on the first pull and are easy to start
I have been wanting a smartstow Toro to save room and now watching this video, that is this same Honda that I am replacing. I am awaiting the Toro 190cc to arrive so I cannot compare them yet, personally. However, I have had that Honda HRX217 for about 8-9 years and still starts first pull. I have super thick grass and keep it at 4" cut without any problems. The deck is a non issue really, it is similar to a football helmet material and those are meant for taking a beating. My Honda still looks brand new. I take care of my sister-in-law's lawn and will leave it over there, so I will get to enjoy both of these mowers. Thanks for these great videos, I ordered the Toro after watchign your review video on it. P.S. - I do the annual maintenance on the Honda religiously and keep an extra sharpened blade on hand to rotate every few cuts (I am a lawn nut). One thing I am struggling with is the thought of the "no oil change" Toro marketing. I believe I will end up removing the annual used oil and replacing it, but haven't made up my mind yet.
Hey reversion sounds like you’re a lawn nut for sure! You’re in good company! And I sounds like you got your heart set on that toro! I would definitely change the oil on that engine once a year! Thanks for being a cool fan!
Very comprehensive review. I have owned the HRX 217-VYA for several years. I will never sell it. The Versa mow system and cut quality are far superior then all other walk behind mowers. The only thing I do not like is the Select Drive. I prefer the Personal Pace system of my Toro TimeMaster. Thanks again Sir for your information and energy!!!!
I have the HRX217K5VYAA. I got the Honda Roto-Stop blade control. That was the reason I bought it. I can run the engine without the blades engaged. Ine thing you may have overlooked was the size of the bag opening. So large you can dump leaves out of it faster with less fuss. Give the Honda two more points.
Picked up the HRX217 this morning. Your review sold me! Should there have been a green or blue dot on the box? The HRN216 models had a green dot on the box. Made the purchase at Home Depot.
@@tomacquilano1304 hey Tom! Did you watch this video? SHOULD YOU BUY A HONDA LAWN MOWER IN 2024? (3 Things To Check) th-cam.com/video/pvQXy67vkzM/w-d-xo.html
@@GarageGear I did watch that video some time ago. At the time I didn't need a new lawn mower but when mine shit the bed 3 days ago, I went for the HRX217 after watching this video. The engine serial number is GJAVA 1856740 MY01. It's outside the range of serial numbers on the spreadsheet. I also checked the mower serial number on the Honda website for recalls and there weren't any recalls. I cut my grass with it last night. Used the bagger on the front yard. Filled it up 4 times! Used mulch mode on the back and did just fine. Couple things I didn't like, unfortunately. There's a short hill section in the back. There must be a clutch on the drive system because it didn't help much at all going up the hill. My old mower is a Husqvarna 725EX AWD with a 190cc engine. It's a beast. The other issue with the Honda drive system is that it's a bit jerky and inconsistent. With the speed dial set, it will sometimes go at that speed and sometimes just take off. Other than those two things it did a great job cutting and the mulch was way better than the Husky. We also have a Toro at our rental property that I bought new earlier this summer. I don't recall the model but it has the Personal Pace drive and I believe it was around $400 bucks. Don't like that mower much. Mulching wasn't great and it struggled cutting any more than a couple inches off the grass. Thanks for reviews! You do a great job!
how about the drive control on the handlebars of the Honda can you comfortably make a 180° turn around an let go of the drive lever while still holding on to the bale keeping it running I go back and forth alot
The next up the line Honda hrx has the upgraded hydrostatic transmission with the speed shift. I haven’t used a better self propel system on a push mower.
My new Honda mower has an open belt and pulley (no guard) under the deck. It looked like the Toro had one. That lack of protection could cause premature wear or failure of the drive. Really makes my mower susceptible to even moist grass clippings. Otherwise been loving this mower's performance.
I own a Honda HRR. Its about 3yrs old now. I take excellent care especially during winter storage. Anyway, when I wash the bottom of the deck, I let it dry & spray with Fluid Film. Keeps deck from rusting & grass clippings don't stick near s much. And don't get on belt.
I have had the same Honda for about a year now and agree completely with all of your opinions, especially about the underside of the deck. Lots of places for grass clippings to accumulate. But, that is my only complaint. Hands down, the most powerful walk behind mower I have used. I cut 3 lawns with really thick St. Augustine grass and it is very rare that it has an issue. One thing you might have left out, does the Toro have a fuel shutoff? That can be a huge carburetor saver long term.
In 2010 I bought a brand new Honda HRX2172VKA for $600. I have used it a lot! I mainly mulch both my grass as needed and my leaves in the fall. Other than normal maintenance stuff like blades, spark plugs, oil and air filters... I have only had to replace (1) part. I started hearing a weird ticking noise. I searched the web (including TH-cam); found a video with the exact same problem. the noise was coming from the pull start (the pull start worked, but the ticking was annoying). I ordered a new pull start for around $25 + tax and the issue was fixed. This has been the most reliable lawnmower I have owned. My first was a Craftsman that lasted about 5 years . Then I bought a Toro which lasted about 6-7 years. My HONDA has exceeded my expectations.
Not sure why folks talk about Honda's Xenoy (aka NeXite) decks as if this is a new invention? Honda introduced these composite decks in HRM models in the early 1990s! So yes, they last decades! The wheels on HRX217 have 2 bearings (inner and outer) in each wheel. In VKA, VYA and VLA trim levels, the front wheels are also made heavier due to additional round metal plates inside the wheels. Also, the quality of paint and smoothness of all levers on Honda is really top of the class.
I have both. HRX is about 15 years old and the Toro Super Recycler has the Honda motor and is 2 years old. Both cut equally well, but the Toro is lighter and easier to maneuver around the yard. My summary is can’t go wrong with either. I can say I’m a Toro fan now.
I have owned 6 Honda lawn mowers since I was 22 and recently turned 62 . I have noticed my last two mowers where not as robust and I finally had enough with my last new hrx217 with quality break downs and leaks , so I sold it after 6 months due to living in a rural area the nearest honda shop is 45 mins away and repairs where weeks apart. My son inlaw purchased a toro 22" recycler with briggs and stratton 190cc motor and has been raving about it last 2 years. I decided to buy the Toro AWD 163cc recycling mower this week and can not beleave how much better this mower is over the Honda's I wish I would have listened to my son inlaw earlier. Have heard Honda is stopping production of its lawn mower range and I think they should if yhey are not going to research their products properly and release expensive rubbish on to the market. My Honda leaf blower and whipper snipper are due to be replaced shortly I am sure I won't be going Honda again for anything.
Switched from a Honda HRN216 to a new Timemaster and couldn't be happier. I don't get why people complain, if you take care of your equipment and use it as intended, it's awesome.
I have a Honda 190cc HRX 217 that is about 12yrs old, and a 32yr old cast aluminum Toro Recycler with the tiny 121cc Suzuki 2-cycle engine and 3-speed transmission. I have some bumps in the yard and the Honda is kind of bouncy and feels a bit top heavy compared to the old Toro. I think the Toro is a few pounds heavier and most of the weight is in the deck, and the Honda has a lighter deck and larger heavier motor that stands much higher off the deck. The Honda does make more power, but it is more than needed. The Honda is a great mower, but the old Toro mulches better and leaves a much better finished cut. I am not a fan of Honda's select drive or Toro's Personal Pace. I like old school 3-speeds, but I have never tried Hondas Hydrostatic transmissions. If I bump into an old 1990's cast aluminum Honda HR 215 on the cheap I'm grabbing it. I'm not feelin' Honda's Nexite so much even though I am a HUGE Honda fan. Been driving Honda's for 27yrs, and my old Accord saved my life 23yrs ago.
For me 10 years ago it was simple. I didn't care for toro's personal pace setup. If I wanted to push it to go faster I'd just get a push mower. The honda personal pace fit my hands perfectly and has never let me down.
Great comparison JB! I went with the Honda HRX several years ago. I never liked the Toro walk behind system. Plus the Honda was USA built! My son has it now and that mower will last many years. But I have to maintain it since he’s a mow and go kinda of guy. Kids….it does “grind my gears” that Honda is getting out of the mower line. I might just get one and store it away. Great video JB! Cheers buddy!
Appreciate you Jay! Not a bad idea by the way! Some others have said they may do the same! Keep a great mower on the back burner! Guess the only way to get a good mower after September is to go with something commercial! Have an awesome weekend bud!
I have a 2018 Honda HRX and also a 10 year old toro Super Recycler - I’ll have to say my HRX is heavy and bogs down in wet grass - or thick grass - meanwhile the Super Recycler is lighter and powers through it all - also the HRX self propel dial speed I have to adjust tighten up every month plus the rear wheel seems to lock up every now and then -
Just purchased a hrx217 and I absolutely love it! Looking for a back up mower at the moment and can't seem to make up my mind. I could go with a Honda HRN with the gcv170 but I want something a little beefier. I really like the Toro Super Recycler with the 190cc Briggs, and I love the personal pace system. With that said, something intrigues me about the new Ariens Razor 21 dual blade. Looks like a beast and with the dual blade I'm very curious on the cut quality. Curious on the Reflex system too! Unfortunately not much info on the Ariens kicking around TH-cam just yet. Would love to see a review on one!
Ha, I just bought a Honda 216 on Sunday afternoon and on Monday morning I was given a near new Toro 22. Now I can't decide which is better. The Toro seems to have a bit more power and will drag you around on a trailer if you could find a hitch point, but that Honda is just a lovely machine too, with perfect lawn stripes and cleaner cut. I even tried both in the rain and both gave perfect results. Beggared for choice after putting up with dodgy mowers for a couple of years. BTW, how do you get rid of old mowers which still work just fine but are ratty compared to both of my new ones? Probably could leave them on the sidewalk with a sign, 'FREE to good Home'.
I’m a big Honda fan, own 2, also owned a Toro Recycler for about 10 years. My concern for Honda is that they are leaving the lawnmower business, at least the gas powered side. I have seen videos of their battery powered line which I’m guessing will be available here soon. Hopefully getting parts for their gas powered mowers won’t be an issue.
Only for the us market, and they will still be making the motors just not the. Mowers for US. Parts for other parts of the mower will be around for decades
@garagegear I'm looking for the best mower for $600 or less. I bought a 21 inch honda from home depot and it was recalled, so I returned it hoping to get some sales for black friday. Regardless of it being on sale, do you have a recommendation? I've watched a few of your videos and theres some flaws with Toro, but it seems to me its between a Honda and a Toro, but I'm weary of honda due to the recall and them discontinuing production of gas mowers. Appreciate any recommendation you may have! Thanks
Hey Tim I’m really not pleased with the quality of some brands lately and will be looking at more next year. If you can find a gently used Honda for sale perhaps go that route. The cam shaft issue seems to be only effecting models this past year. Thanks for being a cool fan!
Alright look, I don't suggest purchasing a Honda; perhaps you should consider a lawn mower brand that has been in the industry for a longer period of time and has had more opportunities for trial and error. My Honda 216 has been causing me a lot of issues. If you purchase a Honda mower, there will be trouble ahead. Naturally I'm going to advise you to go with Toro..
I have a Honda i got used it runs great just needed a little love...and i got my friend one 3 yrs ago used i dont know how long it will last he never changes the oil just runs it all the time without maintenance...
My second batter on EGO started to fail made a big mistake as those batteries last mostly only three years. I am going back to gas and most likely going to get either Toro or Honda most likely Honda.
Just found your channel and you’ve been a huge help in researching my next lawn mower. Do you think the Honda is better for sloped yards than the Toro? Both my front yard and backyard are sloped and I’ve had a Honda before but the biggest issue I had was with the cutting. I have Zoysia in my backyard and it’s pretty thick stuff, you think this model Honday can handle that as well? Thanks for posting these videos, they are a big help.
Hey concours rider! Appreciate the positive feedback! The Honda is a good all around homeowner mower that can handle most turf types! I think you’d be surprised by its capabilities! The dual blades work nicely mulching everything up too! If you have any other questions let me know! 👍
Took my Honda to get the recall fixed, and when I got it back they said I had a bent crankshaft when it never did when I took it in. Sad I loved that mower.
@@GarageGear Took it to another mechanic! And my crank wasn’t bent!! She’s running brand new! They just put everything on wrong! So happy with my HRX🔥🔥
Is the drive system on the HRX217VKA identical to that of the HRN216VKA, or is it more robust? I understand the transmissions are different; I'm talking about the belt-drive sytem...thank you.
Just got 2 toro mowers, one is awd & 1 is smaller. I sold my hrx due to being to bulky. 1 downside to the toro mower is, no discharge but I hope it will be a good choice in the end. Oh an no changing the oil in them.
I bought Honda in 2020 and recently got into small engine and bought another Honda that supposedly needed the drive belt but it’s a gear transmission and the cable to put it into gear broke how shall I test the transmission to make sure it works before for I replace the 50 dollar part?
I have had both a recent Honda and the Toro Super Recycler . The Honda engine is amazing but the Toro is a much better mower! The drive system is way superior. The straight handle is no problem aand I don't agree with these comments. This channel is remarkable so you don't have to agree.
I have a Honda 216 and it has been nothing but problems. I would have wished that I had got a Toro super recycler. I should have done a little bit more research.. Toro has been in the grass game since 1914 beating Honda and every other mower in terms of reliability
I've been in my house for 41 years and I'm only on my second Toro,,,and never had a repair other than sharpen the blades and change oil, that's awesome service from a great product.
@GarageGear the Toro I've had almost 20 years now has the Honda engine, and it always starts on the first or second pull, never a belt replaced just sharpen the blade every year and personal pace system is still flawless.
open the rear flap and wd40 the mechanism and also wd40 all 4 wheel adjusters. really helps, the bag to mulch lever will move easily even jammed up with clippings.
Great review, tks. Leaning to the Honda HRX217 HYA, but still have some more homework to do. One of the questions have on any of the self-propelled mowers is how they turn, then start reverse pass. Especially given the various handles that need to be engaged. Have a smaller front yard so there is a lot of turns.
I’ve had my 217HRX for about 15 years. It has the electric start option but it is so easy to start it’s not needed. Even my wife can pull start it. I have many curves and tight areas in my yard and the self propelled feature is a blessing to help the turnarounds. Hands down the Honda wins over my former snapper and toro! The only repair has been the speed control cable, which I replaced myself.
The Toro ground speed control is the best by far because it is fully automatic. Walk faster and the mower speed increases. Walk slower and the mower speed decreases. With the Honda you have to constantly coordinate your hands and walking speed, and the speed levers are very hard on my arthritic thumbs. My Honda engine would not restart when hot, so the electric start was useless. The Toro with blade brake does not need to restart when hot. These factors were big enough to make me give away my 2 year old Honda and buy the Toro.
I bought a Honda HRX in 2021. Overall big fan. I will say, while the Mulch/Bag adjustment seems like a good idea, if you have a finer grass like Bermuda you'll still wind up with clippings accumulating in the discharge port when fully on Mulch setting (along with a little bit of discharged clippings coming out of the back). Feels like Honda could have solved this with some sort of weather stripping or just better seal for the adjuster. It's not a huge pain, but doesn't match the usual Honda engineering standard.
I have the GCV200 Honda and its 1 pull to start. I DONT LIKE when you cut tall grass in bag mode with no bag it clogs up the chute and you have to pull it out with your hand and you have to go really slow if you are trying to mulch tall grass or it will bog out. I feel like the mower should be able to rev much higher than it does. I usually cut taller, thicker St Aug but I feel for the price it should have more Torque or power. Im not sure how I feel about the hard plastic deck, I wish it were aluminum & the Honda wheels do come lose and you need to retighten them
Hello , I have two questions ? 1. Does a honda cut grass backwards , like you walking back with lawn mower engaged ? 2. Can the toro do the same ? I'm not saying cutting your grass backwards all the time , just asking if it saves time . Thank you in advance
How would you compare this Toro model to a new HRN series Honda? For comparison would be nice to know. Also, there are complaints supposedly with the changes Honda made in the last few years about grass getting stuck in the belt area and causing transmission issues? I'm Honda guy with a 17 year old HRN and it's about ready to be replaced and I'm trying to figure out what to go with. My old HRN doesn't seem to have enough power at times and I'm wondering if I need to step up to a HRX or the newer 170 CC engine will be big enough to notice a difference on the HRN. Sorry for all the questions trying to figure out what seriously look at. Especially at 5000 ft I do lose power. Thanks!!!
Hey Daniel! First I have not had any issues with grass and the belt. I don’t know what’s causing this to happen to people but I mow twice a week with no problems. Perhaps if you are mowing a ridiculously long lawn this could be the case but I don’t see any issues mowing my lawn when it’s longer. The 170cc engine has plenty of power and is actually pretty fuel efficient. Hope this helps you out!
your right about big win being made in home country, rare as the preverbal rocking horse Sh- - , always a huge plus even here in Ireland, really hard to find these days.
I have a 2021 model super recycler and it cuts better than anything I've ever used. Not super impressed with the new Briggs and Stratton. Dipstick, air filter and gas cap don't seal well and let some fine stuff through.
JB have you ever done a video on the Timemaster kill switch? I noticed a fence and my switch hit the fence twand had to replace. I went to hardware store and got a insulated switch for $5. So easy to use. I put it in the same housing as the Original switch. I even had thecswitch ware out. Take care.
JB. I was curious to yiur opinion. I have been trying to decide which mower to buy. My two choices are the Honda HRN 216 or the Toro Recyvler Max. Both are the same price. The Toro has a 5 year and warranty . Honda has a 3 year warranty. What do you think is a better buy.
@GarageGear I also have another question. Since Honda doest have a guard around the blades that they are locking up around the belt drive. Is this True.
@@shaneminor6214 they don’t have a belt guard but locking up isn’t an issue. If something were to get stuck in the belt then you’ll have an issue. If you mow a lawn with lots of sticks you’ll have to be on constant watch
Great video, definitely a Honda guy , i run 2 HhR model an love em all the way around, very disappointing they are getting out of gas mowers but . Oh well , thanks again great comparisons!! Take care .
Nothing wrong with plastic carburetor. I have a 1989 Evinrude outboard engine with 8 plastic carb's on it (34 years old) and they work just perfect today.
Crafstman for the win. I bought my craftsman 3 years ago, I do not bag as there is no need to. It mulches so well that my clients think I bag, but I do not. No oil changes ever, just added a dribble of oil for the first time since buying it this season. This season was also the first year I have had to sharpen my blade, despite cutting commercially with the mower. The only grass the mower has struggled to cut was 2 foot tall grass, very dense, had to cut that lawn twice to bring the length down nicely. Toro sucks straight up. Used their mowers commercially for 3 years, and we had them in the shop monthly, even for their commercial grade mowers, let alone our residential grade push mower. A couple of my clients have Honda mowers, and they are not bad. The bag to mulch switcher is not very reliable as the bag mode allows grass to get stuck, preventing the switch closing back off to mulching. Also the drive belts on Honda mowers seem to be hit or miss, and I end up often using them as a non driven mower. I can not comment on Craftsman's belt drive quality as I do not use self driven mower. I can say Crafstman uses the plastic back guard, that fell off fairly quick, but has not affected the striping quality in the slightest. Good striping is all in the pace of the mow more so then anything else. When I worked for the company I learned from, we had top of the line striping kits on our 0 turns, I was the only one who did not use them, and the boss constantly asked me how I got my stripes to look so good, did I finally use the striper, did I double cut to define the stripes? Nope, just cut at a good pace to put that stripe into the grass. But strictly between Honda and Toro I would take the Honda all day any day.
I have both as well,For me it's Honda by a mile. Build quality is so much sturdier, more powerful engine and overall design it's just better and dual blade beats bafflle nonsense all day. I live in Fl so I cut year round and 3 Times a week in season. I have 4 mowers (also have a 60 V Toro which is worthless down here and a 23" 175cc Craftsman that I like better than the Super Recycler as well. I use the Honda 75 PCT of time and let the other 2 do the other cuts. The 60 V was just a mistake.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but since Honda will no longer make new lawnmowers, who will service them in the event of a needed repair? I am leaning toward the Honda, but we do have a Toro dealer locally (small town). Have you ever had to deal with Honda directly, or a Honda dealer, on any warranty issues? If so, what was your experience? Thanks for your very informative videos.
@@cjelvado good question! Most small engine repair shops should handle them. And I believe any warranty issues will have to go directly through Honda. Then they can tell you where to go or what to do.
My present mower is the HRX217VKA. There's nothing it doesn't do very well. When I'm finished mowing I blow the mower off with compressed air top side and under the deck. Takes every bit of one minute tops. Honda is King of the non commercial walk behinds. I'll also probably be buying another to put away just to insure that I get to mow with one of these for a long time. Great video JB.
Used the Honda once - even in the full mulch setting clipping are shooting out the back and collecting in the rear bag area - I’m returning it - faulty design with air gaps that surround the plastic “adjustable mulch plug”. Lots of good about the mower but the multi clip adjustment is no good if you want to mulch 99% of the time.
Question about the discharge chute are you supposed to receive an email with the tracking number I did register my machine and requested the discharge chute or is it just supposed to arrive?
The Toro rear wheels crack around where the bolt fastens to the mower, ugh! Quick fix: Buy 2 small radiator hose clamps and fasten them to the inside of the wheel where the bolt slides thru to fasten them to the mower , this prevents the plastic from splitting, which leads to wobbly wheels
If you could ONLY choose between a Craftsman M230 or Toro recycler 21485 which would you choose. I know it’s subjective, but I have to pick between the two. Thanks
@@GarageGear one more question, sorry. I own the m230. My brother asked if I would pick out a machine for his property. I guess the M230 is no longer carried by Lowe’s(machine must be purchased at Lowe’s). So that leaves me going with the next nicest machine which is the Toro 21485 or if I want Crafstsman I’d have to step down to the M220(150cc). So in that case would you go M220 or 21845? I would compare the honda gvc engines to more of Briggs quantum flat head engines quatems that are easily one of the best (discontinued) engines that where paired to toros. The flat heads are indestructible! I work on small engines as a side gig. I've seen plenty Briggs flat heads decades old and abused yet they are still running.... The gvc line is more of a home owners engine that will last a very long time also. HONDA GX series is another monster. THOES are can be used and abused and still go!
I purchased a 2023 Super Recycler with the electric start and 1900cc engine. Looked at the Honda and the local dealer would not even accommodate me as he said he could not sell a unit due to a recall. From what I have ascertained the 200cc Honda engine has a valve 'guide' problem and as they are 'leaving' those of us that have properties where the 'electric' units would not be an option that made the decision easy to make. I will deal with the plug for mulching. I am not worried as I do not make any attempt to keep up with Jone's. I just need to cut my very hilly undulating 1 acre lot. Cheers.
I have a Honda hrs216. Great mower BUT I’ve had a lot of trouble with the self propelled system when pulling the mower backwards. Had it in the shop twice and all they did was give it a bandaid fix. Engine is 2nd to none. B&S isn’t even close!
Hey Brody! They do have the super recycler decks. They do not have personal pace. They have a drive bail system! Much more durable! I’ll have a video on one this weekend!
@@brodygoalie personal pace is a plastic homeowner gimmick . It works well but is not meant to be used all day commercially. Metal drive bails are the way to go commercially. 👍
Question? I love everything about the Hondas except for that lame nexite decking.... Why would Hinda do this? My back yard unfortunately is BRUTAL on mowers. I have tree roots that bulge up from time to time, rocks here and or there that I don't see till after I ran over them. I just don't see the nexite deck holding up to that kind of punishment like a steel or aluminum deck would. Thoughts? Thanks.
They did this for cost and efficiency. It is pretty durable but if you really need something more rugged you could look at the Honda commercial mower with a metal deck! Thanks for watching
@@loislane4583 im in upstate ny with an acre. ive hit roots and small rocks which chipped the blades but no damage to the nexite. iv hit the same stuff with my white (mtd) rider and a rock punched a hole through the steel deck. im carefull but sometimes i get surprised.
As I understand it Honda have stopped making petrol lawnmowers due to an overload in the mower market but still they are making mower engines for other mower manufacturers I love my Honda so just upgraded and won’t be needing a replacement anytime soon ( HAPPY GRASS CUTTING FOR THE UK )
Hey Aaron I usually recommend 5w30 full synthetic because it has the widest temperature range where I believe in the manual it stated that 1030 is kinda limited. 👍
I bought a HRX217HYA. Ran for 20 min. When I tried to start it up again the pull cord was stuck and almost ripped my arm off. I guess it’s a common issue for the cam assembly/decompression. Have you had any experience with this issue? Dealer told me Honda was making warranty repairs difficult, taking about 2-3 months of going back and forth just to get Honda to approve repairs.
@GarageGear I go with it at a comfortable pace I don't mow to get done early I mow to get a break from being inside 😅 honestly have it set on the last split line mode before the solid line area so it can go alot faster
I just bought a Honda HRX217VKA and have not even received it yet. With your knowledge of the Honda, are their any parts or accessories that you would recomend having as a backup? My first Honda ever and at 65 years old, hoping it will be the last mower I ever need. Thanks
Hey Tom can’t go wrong grabbing a set of wheels, an auto choke actuator, and maybe a back up carburetor with some extra air filters. You’ll be set for a VERY long time! 👍
I just picked this Honda up today open box at Lowe’s for $380, the sales rep said it was just purchased yesterday and returned today. The older person who bought said it was too heavy. Feels like I hit the lottery
It is Feb. 2024 and I have the chance to get a Honda HRX217. Besides them not being made anymore is there any reason I shouldn't get it? I know electric is great but I just want something I know that could be my last mower ever.
It's a shame Honda no longer makes gas walk behind mowers now due to the push for battery mowers. Dealers in PA are dropping Honda for other brands now.

Great video. Have a Honda mower and drive a Honda. Love them both, had a Craftsman mower and a Ford. Lost them both-Love can only last after you maintain it for so long.
Had the Honda HRX 217 for 7 1/2 years and the crankshaft went bad. Not covered under the recall like other mowers with the same issue. Mine was produced before they officially did a recall. That being said I’m buying another Honda.
I would definitely go with the Honda, BUT, Honda isn't making new lawn mowers anymore - last year 2024 I think - they will be out of the lawn mower business - too bad. I have a 16 year old Honda, still running well and always keep it in the shed, so no rusting and looks good. Someday I will need to replace it, then I'm stuck with inferior products to choose from, too bad again. Can you tell us what could is better than a Toro, rather than a Honda? I don't mind paying $600 to $700 for lawn mower, not more, what are other top of the line mowers? By the way I remember paying a little over $300 for my old Honda, just to give context. Great Analysis!
A point of clarification. Hondas are assembled in the USA, but they're not MADE here. The parts are made overseas, then shipped here, and assembled here. It even says so on the box.

💯 agree sp!
I’ve owned the Honda for 1 year and it’s a beast. We don’t have a flat front yard and the select drive it super helpful. 1 pull start yet. Mulch option always. Super pleased with it. Also, every day I use it I clean it. Great video JB!!
Appreciate you Eugene! 👍
Thanks for sharing this John! Let me know how the blade works out for you!
Yup. 2020 is like a distant memory now. Prices were still within the universe. That's the Loncin engine right? Black top? Toro needs to up the ante and the consumer needs at least 170 ccs on a mulching mower. 150 can chug in the deep stuff. How's the power. Toro usually uses straight blades for whatever reason.
post how you see the Toro SR mulching blade performing for yourself? thank you
@@marshmower following : what to hear how John sees the use of his toro sr mulching blade on his 2020 Super recycler..
Thanks for sharing Ryan!
This Honda has 200cc's. Comparing "Apples and oranges".

I bought the Super Recycler. Can't complain. I have a 190cc Smart Stow already from 2016. The new one cuts much better, but my first one works fine and starts on first pull. The Smart Stow sold me. My two lawnmowers take up less space than 1 conventional lawnmowers.
Awesome Chris thanks for sharing! 👍👍
Honda! or any budget lawn mower that has a honda engine on its deck, MTD and troy built use to come with honda engines at a affordable price. At 4:11 into the video I hate those drag flaps, I always take them off my personal mowers.
The toro one is pretty bad. Gets stuck underneath all the time.
I’ve had my HRX217 since 2009, change oil, change filter once a year. Changed blades & rear tires once. Starts on first pull, still looks new. Mow yard every 4days during growing season.
Awesome thanks for sharing Bob!
Good score! Thanks for watching!
sad but true. Honda abandoned us
I'll stick with my Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission for the win 🏆 Have owned mine for over 6 years, zero issues.
Can’t beat em!
Hey goose! Honda makes a great mower!

Thanks for sharing Robbie!
Honda has a version of both the HRX217 and the HRN216(and the older version of the HRN the HRR216) that have blade clutch, Honda calls it Roto Stop. But only on the more expensive versions of the models.
My local dealer had one HRX 217 left. It’s mine now. Best push mower I had ever bought. Keeping my HRN 216 for backup since they are done making them
Seriously going to buy a HRX 217 tomorrow. Debating between HYA and HZA for the electric start. Found one with the hydrostatic drive!
Get em while they’re hot fellas! 👍
It gulps oil! Very quickly!! And if too much oil is added your engine will smoke and die!! From experience here!

Hey gls! Agreed! I do like the older personal pace designs this new one is way too big! And I walk into that bar a lot! Appreciate you bud! 👍

th-cam.com/video/pvQXy67vkzM/w-d-xo.html
Yep all works well! You’ll have the technique down in a few passes.
The next up the line Honda hrx has the upgraded hydrostatic transmission with the speed shift. I haven’t used a better self propel system on a push mower.
Awesome point! Thanks for sharing
My new Honda mower has an open belt and pulley (no guard) under the deck. It looked like the Toro had one. That lack of protection could cause premature wear or failure of the drive. Really makes my mower susceptible to even moist grass clippings. Otherwise been loving this mower's performance.
Good point thanks for mentioning gpal!
Wash and dry after use.
Good point Ryan thanks for sharing
I have a Toro Personal Pace for 22 years without a fuel shut off and never had any issues without it.
Thanks for sharing this information with the community JRF👍
Not sure why folks talk about Honda's Xenoy (aka NeXite) decks as if this is a new invention? Honda introduced these composite decks in HRM models in the early 1990s! So yes, they last decades! The wheels on HRX217 have 2 bearings (inner and outer) in each wheel. In VKA, VYA and VLA trim levels, the front wheels are also made heavier due to additional round metal plates inside the wheels. Also, the quality of paint and smoothness of all levers on Honda is really top of the class.
Honda really is the top of their class!
I have both. HRX is about 15 years old and the Toro Super Recycler has the Honda motor and is 2 years old. Both cut equally well, but the Toro is lighter and easier to maneuver around the yard.
My summary is can’t go wrong with either. I can say I’m a Toro fan now.

Hey Esteban! I would like to review that mower as well . Time will tell! 👍
I don’t think it will be an issue! Thanks for watching
Too bad Honda is getting out of the lawnmower market. The competition is healthy, and American jobs are a positive.
💯agree!

That’s a good question. You could always buy the part, try it, and if it doesn’t work out return it or sell the part on eBay.
I have had both a recent Honda and the Toro Super Recycler . The Honda engine is amazing but the Toro is a much better mower! The drive system is way superior. The straight handle is no problem aand I don't agree with these comments. This channel is remarkable so you don't have to agree.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these mowers and thank you for being a cool fan of the channel Robert!
@@TommyG11814 the older toros are much better built.
@GarageGear the Toro I've had almost 20 years now has the Honda engine, and it always starts on the first or second pull, never a belt replaced just sharpen the blade every year and personal pace system is still flawless.
@@TommyG11814 that’s awesome to hear
Switching from Bag to Mulch on the Honda can get difficult if some Grass is stuck under the Deck
Good point! 👍
open the rear flap and wd40 the mechanism and also wd40 all 4 wheel adjusters. really helps, the bag to mulch lever will move easily even jammed up with clippings.

Hey nibs sounds like you god somethings to consider. The toro did trim easier with the bigger back wheels.
we have a Honda HRN. it's easy enough for my wife to operate. she really likes it, so it must be easy to use.
Thanks for sharing
I bought a Honda HRX in 2021. Overall big fan. I will say, while the Mulch/Bag adjustment seems like a good idea, if you have a finer grass like Bermuda you'll still wind up with clippings accumulating in the discharge port when fully on Mulch setting (along with a little bit of discharged clippings coming out of the back). Feels like Honda could have solved this with some sort of weather stripping or just better seal for the adjuster. It's not a huge pain, but doesn't match the usual Honda engineering standard.
Thanks for sharing this information Brandon!

Love my Hondas...was going to buy a new one this year since mine is 15 yerars old and starting to show its age....but can't find one right now
New Hondas are on a stop sale right now and production ends in September for mowers in the US! Might be better off finding a gently used one!
Hello , I have two questions ?
1. Does a honda cut grass backwards , like you walking back with lawn mower engaged ?
2. Can the toro do the same ?
I'm not saying cutting your grass backwards all the time , just asking if it saves time .
Thank you in advance
Hey Sebastian! The blade is always spinning underneath so it will cut when pulled backwards on both models. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing and watching big Steve!

Take care.
Never did that. Actually I sold the mower a couple of months. Thanks for sharing what you did.
@@shaneminor6214 hey Shane you’re gonna hate the persons pace when it doesn’t back up. I would go with the Honda!

Nothing wrong with plastic carburetor. I have a 1989 Evinrude outboard engine with 8 plastic carb's on it (34 years old) and they work just perfect today.
Thanks for sharing William
Thanks for sharing this pho!
@@robbiegolding1831 thanks for sharing Robbie! The 60v can’t get the job done?
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but since Honda will no longer make new lawnmowers, who will service them in the event of a needed repair? I am leaning toward the Honda, but we do have a Toro dealer locally (small town). Have you ever had to deal with Honda directly, or a Honda dealer, on any warranty issues? If so, what was your experience? Thanks for your very informative videos.
@@cjelvado good question! Most small engine repair shops should handle them. And I believe any warranty issues will have to go directly through Honda. Then they can tell you where to go or what to do.
@@GarageGear thanks!
Awesome Kenny! Smart to do so! Thanks for sharing and the positive feedback!
Especially with the rumors circulating that Honda is stopping production of their lawnmowers.
@@mackfar27 Honda is done in September with mowers
Used the Honda once - even in the full mulch setting clipping are shooting out the back and collecting in the rear bag area - I’m returning it - faulty design with air gaps that surround the plastic “adjustable mulch plug”. Lots of good about the mower but the multi clip adjustment is no good if you want to mulch 99% of the time.
Thanks for sharing neo
I have both of these mowers. One other thing Toro has over Honda is that it mulches leaves better with its higher deck.
I would agree with that!
Question about the discharge chute are you supposed to receive an email with the tracking number I did register my machine and requested the discharge chute or is it just supposed to arrive?
Mine just arrived in the mail. No tracking or anything.
Thanks for sharing mary!
If you could ONLY choose between a Craftsman M230 or Toro recycler 21485 which would you choose. I know it’s subjective, but I have to pick between the two. Thanks
You’ll have less headaches with the craftsman. The toro transmission will drive you nuts backing up
@@GarageGear one more question, sorry. I like my M2 30 by the way, I just don’t like the plastic carb and hard plastic wheels. Thank you!

Cheers.

Thoughts? Thanks.
