I'm happy with mine, the 12pb. I just wish I had the self propelled feature because my yard is sloped. I also wish the wheels were metal. The guards would be nice as well as the hole to clean with a hose. The electric start would be nice too. But I'm happy with my 12pb, which is 11 years older than yours and carries the older B&S engine, so just as bulletproof and overbuilt. My whole mower is aluminum so there's no corrosion in keeping it on my back porch. And it's so well built that it starts and stays started and running with little to no work and maintenance.

Good information. I bought my JX75 new in 1998. I had a 1/2 acre yard and the “JX” did a great job of maintaining it. I installed the spin off oil filter kit a few months after purchase for some additional engine protection and did the JD tune-up-in-a-box kit every Spring. The mower was completely reliable and an excellent performer. One question I have regarding your comments on bagging and mulching performance. Are you using the high lift blade for bagging and swapping in the mulching blade for mulching? I noticed a considerable difference in performance when using the incorrect blade for the task.

Also, I wish that mine had more power and maybe a bigger deck because I like my lawn low, but it bogs down if the grass is too high, and I like to cut every two weeks. But hey, idk why yours throws such large clippings, mine doesn't, and yours has 2 more HP than mine. Maybe sharpen the blade and clean it well, keep the deck low, and the grass not too high, run the engine at max power, and walk slower, maybe you'll get better results if you're not already.

Had two of them in mint condition this spring, one with a Briggs Quantum and one with the awesome ‘saki engine. Loved everything about them EXCEPT: 1) Couldn’t feather the drive, when you pull the lever it’s 0 to 60 burnout time on the lawn unless you want to select a speed at the end of every row, and 2) only goes to 3 1/2” cutting height and I needed 4” in summertime. Sold them both to a landscaper, other than those two issues they were nice though.

I bought my '93 14SB used in summer of "94 for $325. It's a JX75 with silver deck😀 Over the years I've put one belt on it, a couple of shift cables, BBC bearing and friction disk and one pair of new wheels. It has the oil filter option, and I run a Toyota/Denso F2/N1 filter same filter as my wife's '05 Prius! Cheap (currently Supertech) 5w30 full syn gets changed every other year. I know I should change the oil yearly, but then again, I should probably swap out the ORIGINAL spark plug, too😂😂...

Really miss my JX75. Watching the video reminded me of all the issues I did have orver the life of it. 1) Replaced the thrown piston rod 2) Replaced tires 3) Engine Cluch was stuck, and always engaged (this is the one I couldn't fix and ended up selling it), 3) random replacments like broken gas cap. This variant is an aluminum deck, they're relatively lightweight. But there's an even lighter weight variant out there for commercial use, which I also wish mine was. But they're all not too heavy. A modern mower or an older mower that's comparable has more weight to it, so you will get tired. With mine, even without self propelled, I'm not too tired, but my yard isn't that big thankfully, but it is sloped.

We have sold off all our name brand commercial new mowers and went all vintage John Deere mowers in my lawn service and can’t be happier with the quality of cut and the reliability of 25-30yr mower. @@GarageGear I found a solution. The original Flanged sleeve bearing on 14sb, jx75 and jx85 mowers the length of the sleeve is 1/2 in, majority of the wheel bolt is on the Ball bearing, with the sleeve so short it is causing the bolt to have movement and eventually breaking the bolt.
The solution to this problem was buying 1/2 in Bore, 5/8in OD and 1in Length Flanged sleeve bearing.
      Model # EF081016
Knocked out the existing sleeve with a punch and hammer the new one in. Since the new sleeve is double the length (1in) it gives the bolt more support and depends less on the ball bearing.
since the flange is thicker than the original. I had to remove the plastic wheel covers because with two washers plus the plastic covers there wasn’t enough length of the wheel bolt to screw in. To fix that problem I removed both covers and use the same two washers on both wheels. Plus it helps me keep the wheels and gears clean since I have access to wash it out regularly, used to get clogged up with grass when covers where on.

Hi JB. Very nice TH-cam channel and a most instructive video. It's rare to see enthusiasts guy like you😃
From the start, I was mowing with a Kubota W4021 from 1985 but which broke down 15 days ago. Some parts being very complicated to find and the model being quite old, I did not want to incur costs on it. So I decided to look for a second-hand mower and that's when I came across your awesome video JB. In 2015 I gave mine away free as I was moving to my new house and bought an ego. I just gave it to one of the guys who mowed lawns in our neighborhood. I used to take it for service every year so it was in perfect shape. Just figured I wouldn't be mowing a big yard with self propelled and had the new ego for the back up. What an idiot I was, as I bought a Honda this year to do my backyard by myself since we have a pool now and don't want clippings blown into the pool. I had the electric start too for the wife to use in case I was away and she needed to mow (she's only 4' 11 and cant pull a mower to start it being so short). 😭

Otherwise it was worth every penny and then some. Amsoil 10w-30 since 2003 and change the oil every 2 years. Oil still looks clean after 2 years. I sometimes remember to check the oil level. JB-LOVE THIS MOWER! (Have several myself so of course I would say that)... everything you said was spot on...EXCEPT: your height adjustment information was a bit misleading - the further forward you put the height adjusters (on the front the I position) is the highest cut height (approx 3.5") and the III is the lowest setting (near tee box height)...I liked that you mentioned the skid plates as an upgrade - I would also recommend finding and installing the spin-on oil filter kit...more oil/better cooling/longer oil life/better filtration...no point keeping the Honda or the Toro with that JD! If anyone wants to discuss this line of mowers more - pls comment and we can get a discussion going...as JB said - if you find one in good shape for little money - BUY IT...even with the parts from a JD dealer (which mine Crossroads Equipment-has been excellent and fairly priced), you will spend LESS than a new Personal Pace Toro with a chinese clone engine and have a way better mower in EVERY respect (except maybe the mulching finish-I will be exploring mulching blades and may make a video on this once tested) The heft of the OEM blades is incredible - but as JB says they bag THE BEST...I also rear discharge to get better better dispersal than the side chute - BUT do so at your own risk...I have a few TH-cam videos on these mowers and links to others if anyone is interested let me know...Great video as always JB!

I've always liked spiral shaped decks for vacuuming clippings, there seems to be a trade off on them between suspending the cut clippings for multiple cuts vs vacuum/speed of cut clippings. Your Deere would probably excel at thick or tall grass. I wonder if a dual blade (like Honda uses) could provide the best of both worlds?

    • @kirkthebeerslinger
      @kirkthebeerslinger ปีที่แล้ว +1

The factory blade gets really good vacuum and leaves a superior cut when bagging or if clippings are not too long discharging...I will be trying to find a mulching blade that fits as that is the weakest aspect of cutting - the Super Recycler does this the best in my experience

No sir. The belt guides seem to be in good position. I have used the machine myself and there wasn't a problem. The way I understand, it was taken to a John Deere dealer they looked at it and refused to work on it. They did put the belt back on. So if they readjusted the belt guides I don't know. I'm still thinking they were running it without the grass catcher. I'm planning on running it again today with some tall grass to see if it comes off. I know it says do not prop open the chute . However that may be the problem. I will also call the customer to be sure I under what conditions the belt comes off. The husband dropped the mower off and told me what his wife told him. When asked other questions, he didn't know. The mower looks like new a 2002, the belt looks good, when engaged the belt is tight. That's a great engine, you are correct about that. I have a JS40. Not a commercial mower, but beefier than anything made today. Love my caster wheels on the front.

Hello JB. Question, do you know if a grass bag from a 14SB, 14SE will fit a JX75 mower. I found one for sale but I need to know if it will fit. Thanks for your time.

Just had a friend give me two je75 mowers. Said they ran when put away a few years ago. Checked oil in the first and put fuel in and it fired right up.
