Tesla Model Y Ultimate Buyers Guide

  • Since the launch of the Tesla Model Y in Spring of 2020, we have seen many changes. Some of those changes have been for the good, and some of them for the bad.
We have seen prices go up and go down. We have seen new trim options for the Model Y, and we have also seen them disappear.
With the constant changes, its time to break down the options you have, and if they are worth it.
If you are ready to purchase a Tesla Model Y, or are considering a purchase of the Model Y, you need to think about these things. Its more than just selecting a color and a performance requirement. The Long Range AWD Model Y has more options to choose from than a Performance Model Y.
With these various differences, and over a year of ownership, I want to share with you some recommendations as you think about what options to get and which to pass on when purchasing your Model Y.

I am not in a “Got to have it now” frame of mind. With a purchase this big I want the best possible Model 3 I can get.
    Should I wait?

Picked up yesterday. I think very accurate is where you live is what kind of tires you get makes sense. FSD in my opinion takes some fun away from driving but that being said if money just doesn’t matter to you then get it. As far as the tires Tsportsline has the same tires you can get 19 inch ones for $1960 then put those on the current tires, then get snow tires and put them on the gimini wheels. You end up saving $1200-1600 depending on what you were going to get.

Good video and excellent points for new buyers to consider.
Here’s my take on range: at one point in your video, you had a comparison of a long road trip (by ABRP, a fave of mine) by two different models, a SR and a LR. The driving time, of course, would be the same in either version. But add in the charge times, and the trip time in the SR was nearly two hours longer than the LR. Whoa Nelly!
    However...
The shortest trip time was over 17 hours. I can’t speak for anyone other than me, but I am NOT Jack Kerouac. I don’t drive over 10 hours in a day. 12 max. 8 more likely. Ever. After that, I’m stopping at a hotel. Which means, regardless of what I’m driving, my EV (a Model 3 SR+, fwiw) is recharging - overnight. While I’m sleeping. Back up to 90% or 100%. Meaning, in the real world, there is not one iota of difference in charge times and total trip time between either the SR or the LR. Or the P, for that matter.
I have a family of 4 (wifey, 11 YO boy and 13 YO boy, and me) on these trips. Or just me, solo. Bathroom breaks. Coffee breaks. Meal breaks. Stretch breaks. All breaks can be incorporated with charging stops. Probably a bit over 2 hours at a stretch of driving, and someone in the car wants/needs a break of some kind. 15-20 minutes on a Super Charger, and we’re off. Easy. Convenient.
I think far too much time/energy has been spent on “range” as a zero sum game. It’s counterproductive (past a certain point) and makes those who are considering getting a Tesla second guess the whole thing. I don’t deny there are individuals and situations where LR makes a huge difference. Get the LR! But to take a 17+ hour road trip as a defining situation is, I think, a bit of hyperbole.
    Just my opinion. YMMV.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yea, no doubt there’s not a long list of people who will drive 17 hours straight, although I did on the way back lol.

Canadian dollar has increased in value to the US buck. but no price changes. for example, the paint at $1k in USD is $1300 in Canadian dollars for a 1.3 US/Cdn, but the price at $50k for AWD is $70k in Canada for a 1.4 US/Cdn $.

Sill saving up for a Model Y, hoping to snag one this summer, 2 years for better batteries is too painful =D.
One question about the new batteries, since they are more efficient, do you think that range will significantly improve? Or do you think Tesla will just be able to use less batteries in each car to lower weight and possibly cost. I can see either being an option. Elon has already said 300 miles is basically the sweet spot.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy

Only 30 min vs 1 1/2 hours at my old job!)...and I also quit smoking, saving me $400/mo! Additionally, in the next few months, I pay off a debt consolidation loan that was $360/mo...between that and the savings from not buying cigarettes, that's a Tesla payment! (Long Range/Dual Motor) Also, they have a new paint process being implemented in Giga Berlin and Giga Texas...and hopefully new color options! I have not used my Y to tow anything yet because I also have a truck which does most of the towing, but it still is an option.
