- It’s been two years and 25,000 miles since we first got our 2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range Performance, and we’ve learned a lot about what it’s like to live with on a daily basis - and if it lives up to the hype from when it first hit the market. Overall, we liked our time with the Model Y, but we certainly encountered our fair share of quirks and build quality issues that hampered our experience. We have 47k miles. Service center has been great. Biggest complaint is random breaking when in cruise control.
I'm trading a 3LR for a YLR for a massive road trip I am planning for next summer. While there are probably better individual EVs out there in this class, Tesla's charging network is by far the best.

We also have a MYP, purchased in August 2021 with 17,000 miles. We have had NONE of the issues you mentioned. Our initial build quality was spot on, and we checked it over with a fine-toothed comb. Ours has been to a service center twice, both times were pretty good experiences. Once was an operator issue :). And once, a year after delivery, to have the state inspection, an alignment, rotation of tires, etc. We've had mobile service two times, both excellent experiences. Once to add the HomeLink system for our garage door and once to replace a taillight that had a chip on it when we took delivery of the car. My husband thought that this one was petty. We did have PPF put on the car the day we picked it up and two weeks later had ceramic coating added. Both of those have proven to be a good investment. It makes cleaning the unending smashed bugs MUCH easier than any other car we've owned. Yes, the ride is stiffer than our Lexus RX350, but it's a performance car and in my mind expected. I do a lot of back country road driving, which is not nearly as smooth or as well maintained, as highway driving, and is great for collecting bugs.
After driving Corollas for years, I finally got a Tesla Model Y Long Range in Sept 2021. I specifically changed my order because I test drove the Performance model and Long Range to compare the ride experience - while the Performance model was faster, the suspension and ride quality were a lot worse - just not worth it for me. The Long Range is still plenty fast (you can enable a power boost for extra $$$ if you really hate money) and the better ride quality and extra range were more important. It still rides like a sports car since there isn't air/variable suspension. I did have a few quality issues to resolve, but those were covered in warranty - with the mobile service (which was great). I did have one issue that required a service appointment, but since I knew my local service center had a bad reputation, I scheduled service at another location - which went very well (about the same time/distance away). While I would prefer CarPlay, the Tesla software is probably the best native experience of any car maker (not exactly a high bar). I greatly appreciate the direct-to-consumer approach, - yes, they are expensive cars, but at least you won't have extra markups at delivery. Over the air updates means my car gets better every week. However, the killer feature is the supercharging network - no hassle, super high uptimes, and integrated with the navigation system - nothing else is even close. Is my car perfect - nope. Is it still the best car I've owned so far, yep.
Now, if I were looking for a car for local commutes and errands - there are plenty of good options now for that use case. Personally, I'd take a good look at the Ioniq 5 if mostly local but with occasional road tripping - if you can find a dealer that won't tack on an extra $10k just for fun.
@Catholic Firefighter I drove my Corolla for 10 years and the one before that for about the same. Good luck finding any desirable car at MSRP right now (might change in 6 months), Teslas are expensive but at least there aren’t any surprises at the dealership. As a technologist, this is a better fit for me than a Kia.
@Catholic Firefighter it’s always interesting to me when someone compares a $26,000 car to an $80,000 car. If someone is paying $80,000 for a car, they’re typically not also looking at a $26,000 Corolla- so comparing the cost and fuel savings is kind of silly. they’re most likely looking at other cars that are $60-$80,000. Whoever told you that the only benefit to an electric car is fuel savings probably doesn’t own one. they are great to drive, they make gas cars feel ancient when you go back to one, and most people charge it overnight and almost never have to think about fuel.

@Catholic Firefighter I would say that’s inaccurate. Go to any EV owners forum or group and poll them their main reasons why they like their car, and it’s almost always because of how it drives. Followed by waking up every day with a “full tank” and not worrying about fuel very often. Somewhere way down the list is fuel savings.
I have a Model 3, have only had a positive experience with my car, the Service Centers and Mobile Service that came to my house were always great. What other car brand comes to your home or office to take care of your car right there on site? As for the harsh ride you guys picked the PERFORMANCE model, that’s on you! If you want a soft ride choose the Long Range model. For me it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned.
I got my Model Y 2022 in February. I would've been fine going with a Mach E but dealers were gauging in my area. So far, after 8 months, I haven't had any major issues at all. There were a few fit and finish issues at delivery, but they were all fixed pretty quick and most of it was just cosmetic. Tesla constantly add/deletes features from each model and I suspect the problems Edmunds had are probably not an issue for the current model. Also, regarding the problem of having to use a touchscreen to adjust things such as the climate control, there are shortcuts and voice commands that most owners know how to use. I also wouldn't get the performance version and expect a plush ride.
this video is just the same stuff re-hashed over and over again. Have had my 22 MYP since March with no issues.
@@briansimon1263 I know 3 people with model y vehicles newer and first gen, unfortunately their stories do match up with this experience.
I really want to know how owners of these vehicles justify the ride quality fit and finish of materials with the price given that the main luxury brands it’s priced against, offer so much soooo much more refinement. Real question do these things not matter as much to newer luxe priced car buyers? I test drove this y and x before buying an X5 last year. The main reason I went with the plug-in 45e was driving dynamics and NVH. I genuinely wonder if any Tesla owners have driven other luxury vehicles priced similarly before buying and just decided that the electric benefit was more important than much of the rest of the vehicle.
To be fair my touch screen needs to be reset twice every few months cus it jsut freezes in my bmw but I have buttons and other ways to control the car. When my two friends with model y had their screens go out on the school run it was far from ok with 3 kids in the car stranded in the drive way. This happened twice to each of them in the last months.
@@LafemmebearMusic My last 2 vehicles were both Lexus and I really wasn't comparing any luxury cars against the Model Y, I just really wanted to dip my toes into the EV segment and the Model Y made sense for me. I honestly don't notice this harsh ride everyone complains about. Does it ride like a luxury vehicle? Of course not, does it ride like any other performance vehicle to me? Yes it does. I think that can be very subjective of course.
@@briansimon1263 It's probably because you got the 2022. My 2021 got smashed by a drunk driver, so I have had both. The 22 is noticeably softer on the ride vs the 2021. I'm not sure whether this is an actual suspension tweak or just the all season tires they put on it vs the Pirelli P Zero tires of the 2021. I have a set of each type, but I haven't bothered to switch to the P zeros on my new model.

Nice job Edmunds! Your review really seems fair. My 2022 Perf Model Y has exact same trim except it's blue. Yes, even paid 10k for FSD, still waiting, but wasn't unexpected. I do like using the Autopilot and Enhance Cruise features in certain situations. I've not had any of the build issues, rattles or rough ride you experienced. I think Tesla engineers were able really tweek the ride quality in the interim since you got yours. Again great job, love the balanced reporting!!
A lot of the things mentioned here are similar to what I have gone through with my 2018 Model 3: Fun to drive but with tons of little problems. The only gripe I have is with your critique of the suspension, you purchased the performance package so it isn't fair to said it's too sporty. Although, the window coming back down by itself is a big flaw. One positive thing you didn't mention is that they give 3 or 4 years of warranty so most of the basic problems, especially problems with the first gen, were covered.
We have a 2021 model 3 SR and a 22 model y Performance and we love them! We’ll never go back to combustion vehicles. The stiffness in the MYP is pretty rough, but not enough to say we don’t love it. Our build quality was extremely good. We’ve had almost zero issues with either one. The service center is the biggest drawback. Although they are getting better. I find myself wanting to go grocery shopping just drive them.😂😂

Trading in my 3 for the Y LR in December. A bit more than I would like but I’m just going to enjoy it.
I love the suspension setup! I totally disagree! My 2021 Y Performance most negative complaints are the crazy expensive tires and service center not being the best experience. Overall, I would buy it all over again! No car is perfect, especially the 8 mustangs I have owned which had a lot of quality issues and panel gaps coming from a company that has been making cars for over 100 years!

Complaints about the distraction of the touchscreen can be greatly reduced if you use voice commands. I rented a Model Y from Hertz for a week and used voice commands to take care of most things I wanted to adjust while driving.
We purchased a 2022 Model Y Performance last fall and so far have had no issues with it other than a slightly misaligned front hood. No rattles or failures. Ride quality is still stiff but it is a performance model. It is not so stiff as to be overly annoying.
I bought a Model Y Long Range (not Performance) in their SECOND year of production and have not had the issues described in the Edmunds video with their "Day Zero" vehicle, and I read that further improvements were made in production year three. So, when prices come back down and federal incentives kick in, it would be a great time to buy.
I had multiple issues with mine and traded it for a mach E which has been flawless
@@mattbrew11 What issues did you have? I specifically avoided the Mach-E because 5 seconds of acceleration before neutering power in a performance car is unacceptable.
I have not had any issues with my Model 3 Performance other than long waits at the supercharger in Los Angeles when I took it on a 400 mile road trip.

i have done 115000 in my 3 long-range and its under 3 years old and only ever had one issue but we can see form other cars that the build quality from the us is lower than the china vertion, my panel gaps are good but it was one of the first china units but the early Us versions had been very poor.
Battery range is now 317 but i do drive it hard and the only other issue is at 115000 miles the home charger plug need replacing as i get charge fails.
The experiences you & others have mentioned continue to make me question at least a little (I really know why) people go out and purchase Tesla vehicles like there’s a 364 day Black Friday sale going on. They by far have the best charging infrastructure and often the best range in the industry but if the vehicle is always malfunctioning and falling apart how often do you really get to take advantage of those things? Not to mention a world where cell phone use while driving is illegal but operating an entire vehicle system in a computer tablet is encouraged and supposedly safe. We know it isn’t. I went on a test drive with a family member in a new, snug and unfamiliar Model 3 and the tablet shut off in the middle of our pre planned route. That was obviously a sign.
Luxury vehicle?! Are there even any luxury pieces in the vehicle? Nappa? Alcantara? Leather stitched dash? Wood grain? Smart phone integration? Massaging seats? Ambient lighting?
Between the employee relations there, ,exorbitant price hikes over the past couple years, lack of full self driving, harsh ride quality, level of build quality, obvious push away from safe vehicle operations via the iPad and lack of manual controls especially in emergency situations I don’t see any reason why ‘I’ would own a Tesla.

as long as tesla shows a willingness and ability to improve, it's still the best *overall* ev for the money.
I also have one of the first Model Ys (LR). I agree with many of their criticisms. The ride is rough and finishes are cheap. I haven't had the service problems, only one issue after the initial fit and finish ones. Service center criticisms are valid. Android Auto/carPlay isn't valid. T hat was known and the integrated infotainment system is pretty good. It's a solid, reliable, cheap to operate, and fast car.
Exactly reasons for me to get the Y.
Also my other car, and previous cars are all sports cars, so the Y feels fantastically comfortable.
I find your comment about Auto/CarPlay strange. Even if it’s known, it can be frustrating. For instance, signing-into music streaming services, syncing issues, map destination sending/sharing, and more.
Polestar has gotten criticism for Android Automotive being the only option, and even though that’s arguably more reliable, they still added CarPlay in an update pretty quickly. Some people just find it easier to plug their phone in and have the exact same music and maps right there.
Sure, if it’s a dealbreaker, you don’t buy a Tesla because you know it ahead of time. But it’s still a valid criticism in a review comparing it against the rest of the market.

So can I ask a question of Tesla owners: how many of you have driven equivalent priced cars that are luxury cars? Are you just ok with the lower quality materials and finish and sound deadening? Or do you all feel like those things don’t constitute luxury to you anymore ? Real question seriously. We own a 2021 X5 and I test drove the model y and model d… the x was the closest to Luxury the bmw offers but still dirtiest that bar and the x 5 we got. For 76k is a plug-in hybrid and we rarely use the gas in it. So my point is have folx jus started letting go of what luxury used to mean? That Tesla in comparison whether the model y or x, was just soooo noisy in comparison to the bmw. Would love your feedback.
@@LafemmebearMusic I really don’t notice the noise people are talking about, nor do my wife who is super sensitive to noises and motions. She loves the model Y. The other car we had is F10 M5, she also loves that but she says she love how spacious the Y is.
We also have white interior which looks very nice, and Tesla has the clean design and tons of mobile access which she really loves, for example she can’t control music on M5 nor air conditioner, from the backseat sitting with our child, but she can do everything in the Y.
She can also precondition the car via the phone which is what her favorite feature, or open/close the window remotely.
We also have a Porsche 911, which has the lowest ride quality but higher luxury feeling, but we don’t really care. Whenever she goes out she also prefers the ride quality and convenience of the Y.

You didn't mention the resale value. A long range model Y bought two years ago with 30K miles is worth only 5K less than a new one. You saved that on gas, so you could get a new one today. Your old one was FREE!!! By the way, first run of a new vehicle has some glitches, new ones today won't suffer those foibles.
Just under 250.000 miles here on the same Tesla battery. Degradation around 10 pct. I am a happy owner 🙂.

The Tesla service center has been very good the few times that I had to go into visit.
The good news is that the ride quality has been addressed in the 2022 Model Y (at least for the AWD LR). Tesla has tuned the suspension and it is noticeably more comfortable and Tesla states that it doesn't diminish handling. The fit and finish is generally good (but not perfect) from Giga Austin and the car had a noticeable rattle which surprisingly went away as something settled or snapped into proper alignment. I agree that at $15K the FSD feature isn't worth it for most since it isn't certified for hands free driving. I have it on my Model 3 so I know what it does but it was much less expensive then.
How is that good news we had to work really hard to find bad things to try and back our anti Tesla bias.
@@alanrickett2537 LOL! Teslas aren't perfect and I can think of 15 or more good improvements that would make them better. For example, weather radar overlay on the map as a user selected feature, better interior lighting including the trunk and frunk, god's eye view for parking, storage compartment inserts standard, hardware for Home Link standard (even if the purchase is an added option), some way to include over the door handles (where the airbags are now), and a lot of other niggly little bits as well as more colors available. But they are still better overall (including the supercharger network) than any other car or BEV out there.

The 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance is quieter and the ride was tuned to be more comfortable. They also dropped the price to $38,000. Better cameras were added as well. This is almost half the price Edmunds paid so it should be a bargain now.
All the variations of “you knew about that so you can’t complain” in the comments are strange. They’re still problems with the experience, even if they’re known about.
“You knew about it ahead of time yet you still bought it” might be valid against an individual’s complaints, where there’s always tradeoffs, but not a journalistic automotive review!
The job of a review like this is to outline EVERY issue so customers can CHOOSE whether to purchase or not. To leave out items because they’re “known” makes no sense.
Plus, these aren’t statements made in a vacuum, it’s against the rest of the market. Whether it’s the screen or the suspension or the build quality. Not all performance cars have hard suspension at all times, plenty offer adjustable air suspension. Not all touchscreen-only cars prevent CarPlay. Not all electric cars have poor interiors. These were decisions Tesla made, not inevitabilities.
Paying 60k and the Sunvisor doesn't work. My 2012 Outback with 125,000 miles sunvisor works perfectly. That car didn't cost 60k when it was new either. That tells you something about Tesla
Fair review, I dig it! I think one of the MAJOR problems is the fact that people receive $60k-$125k vehicles with subpar quality then they go and buy another one a year later....hoping for it to be "better". That is INSANE behavior, Tesla has absolutely no incentive to fix the paint, screen or overall quality since people want A Tesla at any cost.
So what are the choices for better reliability? Toyota corolla???

We've had our model 3 for awhile and had so much fun with it.
Agreed, there are some minor squeaks, but Tesla service center fixed them at no charge. I am picking up a 2023 Model Y Performance next week.
BTW, the screen black out can be easily fixed by a hard reboot without effecting the vehicle. My iPhone 14 Pro Max freezes sometime too.
I am also looking at the Model Y Performance. Our Model 3 Performance has not given me any problems.
@@mocheen4837 I've had my 2023 MYP for a few weeks now and love it so much. The power is so fun. The newer suspension with Michelin Pilot Sport all season tires ride smooth.
I picked up the Model Y Performance for my wife after discounts and incentives for $42,000. So far we like the vehicle and it seems to have a better build quality than my 2019 Model 3 Performance. There were a few scuffs and a door dent when we picked up the vehicle. Tesla fixed the dent for us and provided a Model X as a loaner for a day. I polished the car and had ppf applied to the entire front end and rocker panels. I then had the car and wheels ceramic coated. I also had the front windows tinted. The new Highland is coming out now. I will wait to see how the next Model 3 Performance is before deciding if it is worth upgrading to. congratulations on your purchase.
I considered this car, for a good while I considered a Tesla in my future. $60k was a bit steep, so in July 2021, I decided to save me $18k and buy a VW ID.4. At 62, I don’t need speed, maybe 20 years ago that would have been a priority. I have 37,000 miles on it. Still have close to 2 years free fast charging at Electrify America. Can’t beat Tesla on constant software updates, that is where they excel. That’s the let down with VW- they are poor in that department.
I agree with Carrie. For $68k I would have been disappointed. We paid $52k for the same vehicle minus self driving. It’s just fine for the price we paid. Then the tax credit we will get…
Couple of things... if you bought the performance version don't expect to have ride quality. Its obvious that its gonna be stiff. Like a X3M. So that point its unfair. Build quality its not far from the germans... and the price its ok. Remember maybe a BMW or Mercedes can be more cheaper but you must option it...this Tesla was 68k fully
Great hit piece. Not surprising though. I took delivery on my Model Y Performance in February 2022 and have had zero issues. I have just shy of 22,000 miles on it and I love it!
I heard the tires for 21 rims wear out really fast. How are yours wearing out? Getting close to 30k miles?
@@niltoncorrea5710 I have almost 26,000 miles on my Tesla model Y performance. It’s almost a year old. I had my tires checked about a month ago it was amazing the tread left on them. Even the Tesla mechanics were surprised. I have Michelin pilot sports on mine and that’s the only tire I’ll put on there now. It is a tremendous tire for EV’s!
My 2021 model Y was absolutely terrible and lived at the shop 4/7 months I owned it
I hear the ones that are Model Ys that are made in China have better quality. Idk if any of those get imported to the US.
They don't. Tesla's American cars are almost 100% American - higher percentage than any other American brand, period. Tesla gets zero credit for that which is sad.

I've had a Model Y for two years. Edmunds is just knit picking. It's roomier, more comfortable, and more practical than they make it out to be. I've owned MB, Audi, BMW, and Volvo and it's hands down the best car I've owned. The tech and voice commands are excellent, not the junk other brands peddle. The upfront pricing without markup and the all in tech is awesome. Best of all, the total cost of maintenance over two years has been $60. They came me and finished the job in 20 minutes.
P.S. You can't intentionally order the stiffest suspension and then complain about ride quality....
"knit(sic) picking"? 25K miles in and it's been in for service to a dismounted fog light, repair to window regulator, A/C and suspension. Not sure about those MB, Audi, BMW and Volvo cars you've owned, but every Lexus I've owned (3 of them) has had 0 issues for the years I've owned them (and certainly not a repair at 25K miles). My current car is a 2020 Tesla Model 3 and I love it, but let's be candid about Tesla build quality...it's not great.

@@joshb.1118 Well sounds like YOU are very fortunate. Can't discredit other people for having a horrible experience with their vehicle and the service centers. I've been to a service center several times now and their attitude has become a lot worse. The place is packed with practically new Tesla's that already need some kind of repair.
Can you guys check out the 2023 version? It has a new revision of suspension that is supposed to be much better

I would buy a Tesla, but I'm leaning more towards the Ford or Kia. Tesla is a young carmaker and I know there will be issues with quality (not a huge deal) and service (a very big deal). The people I know that have teslas LOVE them so I don't think owning one would be negative, but I think I can get all the positives of an EV with better quality and a vast dealer network if I went with one of the others. I think Ford and Kia have been learning how to avoid rattles and squeaks for decades. I don't see major, out of the blue issues coming up because they've experienced everything and have been learning all this time.
Supercharger network is a big plus but I wouldn't need one more than a couple times a year charging at home. And non Tesla chargers are popping up all over the place anyway.
And yet you are willing to risk in with Kia or Ford that has only made EVs since yesterday?
@@aljoubert8749 I don't see a big risk getting a car from an established brand with decades of history. Besides, Ford has been making hybrids forever. Longer than Tesla has existed. They aren't new to battery tech
This is a very honest review, the build quality of the Tesla is just so domestic lol. Watch out for the Korean and Chinese competitors.
I own a 2022 MYP and have non of the issues mentioned. Also don’t get a performance vehicle if you don’t like stiffer suspension. I love my MYP it got room for things, people and it’s fast
I like the Performance as well and sacrificed the ride handling for the speed.
Thanks for honest pros & cons, though as noted, many complaints (ride/cost) are re performance trim... and earlier builds yes do tend to have more problems til they iron things out... and, improvements come constantly... eg, new Model 3 AND Y apparently have new "comfort" suspension, more comfortable ride but similar handling, per Elon (and have heard other later model Ys are less firm ride.) Build quality is supposedly more consistent, but as they are also changing & tweaking things on the line constantly, sometimes it won't be consistently good.. but, most of the issues are small, and if present should be fixable by service... should. Performance models w/ big rims and thinner tires DO suffer more on performance, and really, even the standard range models are stupid fast... LR AWD should be plenty, and you can often get $2k performance boost if you want bit more.. smaller wheels are better, also for potholes!
The rest of the driving, tech and overall experience is SO good and better than any other EVs, especially charging, that... it's worth it. .. well, maybe less so after the $7-10k price hikes :( bit too much for the Y now. Hopefully as Texas and other factories spin up so supply catches up to demand, the prices will go back down, and we'll see in 2023 if the $7.5k IRA fed tax credit can help also.
The suspension has been retuned for the 2023 Model year.
You must have gremlins in your Model Y. I have the first generation model 3 and never had an issue. 10 close friends have Ys and 3s and they never issues either. Go figure 🤔
One thing to note based on graphs of a large number of Tesla's, the battery degradation is more in the first couple of years and then slows down after that.

They gave it a suspension change multiple times since 2020. The latest being dubbed “comfort suspension” even for the MYP and supposedly increases comfort noticeably without affecting handling prowess. 2023 model year and up.

Ugh... First of all, you bought *futures* in a *beta* software option that does not yet exist and rolled that price into your review as if it is actually the cost of the car. Then you didn't even mention what current and future functionality the beta software program offers, why you added it, or how it compares to other automaker's offerings.
Second, you specifically paid extra for the "performance" suspension and ultra-low profile performance tires, then complained that the ride was uncomfortably firm. Really?
Third, you complained about the lack of Carplay without pointing out the fact that the native system provides very similar functionality, seamlessly and instantly without the cumbersome dependence upon a phone. To simply say it lacks Carplay leads people to believe it has little more than an AM/FM radio. The reality is that it has integrated sophistication far beyond anything Carplay offers - such as real-time navigation updates that account for energy consumption variations due to wind, traffic, roof racks, trailers, etc. with intelligent automatic rerouting as needed to optimize charging stops on long journeys. Sure, Waze addicts might find Tesla's system difficult to accept, but for regular people who just want the car to function normally without having to fiddle with their phone or lose their entire infotainment system whenever the person with Carplay gets out of the car, Tesla's approach might actually be preferable.
I expect better from Edmunds. I shouldn't have to tell you how to be objective in your reviews - you literally have *one* job.
All of these little complaints about design or a few loose parts tells me non of these ppl ever evet owned any lexury car. For one they are referring to old prices back when ppl wete paying 100k for rav4 prome. 2nd if u buy a performance suv dint complain about comfort. 3rd i owned many many luxury cars in my life and i have never slept better owning a tesla in terms of maintenance. A check engine light on any luxury car will runn u minimum 1k and i promise u in 25k of driving and specifically the way thesr ppl did drag racing, u will get check engine lights. All and all the car is awsome at the right price point i bought my myp for 56k plus i got 7500 in federal tax.

Thats the problem with people not test driving like yourself. You wouldn't know unless you drove it for a month. Your kind relies on YT for reviews lol. Most of the reviews on YT is somewhat accurate. Feels like a race car and race cars are a bit bumpy due to suspension but drives like a race car. My only problem with Tesla is their thin paint. It does chip easily from rocks so stay away from big rigs.
Love how you forget to mention the 88k price includes that 15k fsd package, something most won’t get.

Ford lighting showed like 160 miles, ran out at 80 in one video... If it had been cold with a headwind it probably wouldn't have gotten 50 miles. ouch.
Tesla is also able to produce Cars. My 2022 November Ford order had a VIN and build week but Ford cancelled it and put a 2 month old order a Hybrid Lariat Lux, in its place and told us its cause we were constrained Hybrids. I guess their fix was a highly Constrained hybrid (my order is a bare XL).
You can complain about Tesla all you want (Ford Mike Levin does all the time)...But Ford struggles with basic moral choices.

One reason might be because you move your phone between different vehicles and have a common interface which I can understand but what's missing from the Tesla interface that you need?
I also thought the same, then rented one and just connected my iPhone with bluetooth and all my music was there and sounding great. So it was all okay on my side.
I have a 2022 MYP and have had it for just about a year now and I have none of those issues. In fact, my car hasn’t required any service yet ZERO. I had one software issue that they fixed remotely with a software update. I have not experienced any of the issues you talk about in this video. None of them. So I think it’s safe to say your experience is anecdotal and does not represent the overall experience everyone else is having which is why the vehicle is a hot seller and in some countries is the best selling vehicle. The ride quality is same as a sports car, but you are buying the performance model so it’s supposed to ride like a sports car. If you want something softer the long range model is for you. As for range Tesla updated the energy app and since I started using it my range actually increased. Is shows your energy consumption and gives you recommendations on how to maximize your range. The sound system in this vehicle is incredibly good and powerful. My seats are white and still look new after 12 months of wear. As for self driving don’t listen to these people as they are clueless when it comes to the software in a Tesla. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam of people using FSD. I highly recommend you watch them to get an honest unbiased opinion of the feature. Tesla has the best software on the market PERIOD! No one comes close. The voice controls are incredible and the fact that people who make a living reviewing vehicles don’t know anything about this says something about the quality of their work or they are intentionally trying to mislead you. Tesla software has the capability to connect to third part applications and the one I have enables me to issue voice commands from my Apple Watch. No other manufacturer is doing this. All the added software features are too many to list from watching movies to playing games, to just having fun the Tesla software is amazing. There are so many apps already available that Apple CarPlay and android auto is not needed it would be a waste. It’s for vehicles that don’t have good software. My only gripe is I wish it was a half second quicker. Competitors have benchmarked the vehicle so it’s time to increase the power and add track mode.
I have a 2021 Model Y performance with 29,000 miles on the odo, 0 trips to the service center. I did replace my 21 inch wheels with 20 inch and all season tires for trips at higher elevations/winter driving. This also improved the ride quality slightly but I didn't think it was that stiff to begin with. It is the performance model, so you shouldn't be surprised on a stiffer suspension. The Tesla replaced a Lexus 350 that had numeroous issues thru our 3 years of ownership, including an entire transmission replacement under warrenty, so no car is perfect. At this point I would purchase a Tesla again.

I work on Teslas everyday, although I like them and own one my self I’m not going to turn a blind eye. Tesla quality is an issue for the price you pay. Consider your self lucky if you have one that came in perfect but that’s according to your eyes. Trust and believe you don’t want me to inspect your so called perfect Model Y (streetmoney21) because what you think you know you don’t. Hell I’d buy another one but I’ll do so because I know what to expect but don’t be fooled Tesla does not build quality cars they build great tech Period
Most Tesla owners are happy, from what I know after 6 years ownership of two of Tesla’s cars. Charging really matters and you have largely focussed on small stuff. Very legacy OEM perspective. More or a less waste of time watching this.
Hilarious review. You guys got too early of a build. You guys liked the ID4 more right? You will love your next model Y. The new suspension is slick. Don’t forget, you have a $10,000 battery pack in it so when you tell your employees what level of a vehicle an EV is, equate it to a vehicle $10,000 less expensive. That’s a better apples to apples for build and amenities. We ordered our third tonight and another friend at the dinner table picked up one too since she was fed up with oil changes and a constant diagnostic issue on her Jeep that they just haven’t been able to fix right. Eventually Tesla service will be big enough to triage fixes vs repairs or other real issues so it doesn’t feel so haphazard. Tesla has a lot of room to grow and luckily they keep trying. The wait list for the vehicles has just been unmanageable. Come January 1, I’m sure we will see some very very big changes to the entire system which is one thing we all love…the constant updates.
Can’t help but see the huge panel gap behind the presenter. The trim on the C pillar does not meet the roof liner. The gap looks huge. Not something you expect to see on any 2020 era vehicle.

Tesla has some of the lowest build quality of any manufacturer. They score yearly at or near the bottom.

The only new car I ever owned was a 2012 Chevy Cruze which only ever went back to the dealer once for a recall. I wanted to buy a Chevy Volt instead, but the price premium was way too much.
All cars before and since that one have been 3 or more years old; I don’t like burning my money. Yes they require suspension and brake maintenance, but as far as I can tell EVs have suspension and brakes to maintain as well. My neighbor was changing the brakes on his 3 year old Leaf las week.
I purchased my Model Y Performance in December 2020. Now at 30,000 miles, I’ve experienced NONE of the issues shared in this report - no build quality defects, no rattles, no screen blackouts. Total repairs and maintenance, other than tire replacement, has been a whopping $0. (Oh, and my electricity is included with my rent, so unless I’m traveling, it costs me NOTHING to fuel my vehicle!) The ride quality is admittedly stiff for this class of vehicle - but I anticipated that as a cost of its road carving performance (just like my previous BMW M2!). I also opted for the THEN $8K Full Self Driving (FSD) package and have been a beta tester from the beginning of the program. Although I love my FSD, it might be better described as “Full Driving Assist.” I use it 90% of the time to dramatically reduce driver fatigue, but still think of it as a student driver. If you’re expecting true FSD, it’s probably not for you - especially at the current ridiculous $15K price point! Despite that, IMHO, it is still light years ahead of what any other manufacturer is currently offering. All total, though, I’m delighted with my Tesla’s great handling, neck-jerking acceleration, and bleeding edge technology. Having owned many high-performance and luxury vehicles over the years, it is by far my most favorite vehicle ever!

If you want a truly unbiased review of the model Y, visit someone like "Now you know" who buys their own cars and therefore isn't beholden to legacy auto. I wouldnt buy new model Y at current prices. I used to own 2021 and 2022 MYP's but sold 2022. For minor fixes service was good. But any repairs that is more involved l, tesla will blame most problems on software. I had issues with modem but they refused to fix it, wanted mento wait for update without knowing when. I felt like I was dealing with evil th3rd party warranty company
Wow, Edmunds hasn't changed a bit. Still whining and complaining about everything all the time. We KNOW about Apple Car Play or Google Auto not being in the software - it never has been and I suspect it never will be. That's like Edmunds complaining that their Ford Fiesta doesn't have a Maseratti hood ornament on it - it doesn't and it won't. Get over it. Geez. I'd say paying 78 bucks for 25,000 miles of maintenance is pretty darn good but of course Edmunds skipped right over that.

Summary: There’re better options than Tesla with much better quality
Just avoid Toyotas, apparently they can't build EVs without the wheels falling off. I'm all for more options, but the main draw for Tesla is the supercharging network. The others aren't even close. EA is replacing a lot of charging points with a newer gen, so hopefully that will improve soon. Ironically, the best thing for all other EV makers will be when Tesla opens their network to other EVs in North America.
Corporate propaganda against Tesla
My concern is that Tesla is going to let these models gather cobwebs while other automakers catch up and surpass. We had a Model 3 in 2018 and it’s basically the exact car 4.5 years later. Tesla is starting to lose their edge. And quality automakers will surpass soon.
Actually they continuously improve the very same models. So the same looking Model Y today is not the exact same one next month. They are always improving the build and software, that is one thing I find very impressive with Tesla and I work with legacy Auto.
At the price point the model y is a bargain. I love driving long stretch of roads on autopilot.

Got my Model Y about a year ago. I have not experienced a single con that this video described. Great build quality, haven’t had any noticeable battery degradation yet, love the ride (the people complaining about stiffness, are the same people who pick out a mattress and then complain about it a few weeks later. Get a ride that you prefer and test drive it beforehand. It’s not rocket science.) Overall this video wouldn’t be more than 2 minutes long without them nitpicking and finding things to complain about, so I imagine that is why they added all these “cons”.

I quit subscribing to Car and Driver when the new CTS came out. They had spent the last 4 years heaping praise on the old model and as soon as the new one came out they said how it was improved because the last one had all kinds of squeaks and rattles. I'd be pissed if I dropped $50k on a highly recommended vehicle only to find out it was a rattle can. That said I do think Edmunds is a much more reliable source for the good and the bad, especially if you dive into their consumer reviews. Their critiques of this Tesla I have heard elsewhere: poor fit and finish and a non-luxury grade interior despite being priced at luxury car prices. It doesn't take much use of your eyes to look at their interior compared to any of the German makes and see it's inferior. I own Tesla stock because I believe in their trajectory, however the items Edmunds highlighted should definitely be addressed in future models.
In the past Tesla fans talked about how Tesla was better than everyone, how reliable EVs are, and how almost every problem could be fixed via an OTA update. Time has shown this to not be true.
Reading the comments Tesla owners are now saying that their vehicles don’t have the problems that Edmunds’ version has because theirs is newer. The suspension, seat comfort, and noise are examples.
If Tesla was so perfect from the start then why should Edmunds test newer versions?
Some fanboys even said they would drive their Teslas to 1 million miles on one drivetrain.
I needed one small thing fixed, they came to my house and replaced the rear seat.
