  • Two 'Entry Level' Threadripper Zen 2 TRX40 Motherboards are up on the test bench today, with a deep dive into the ALC4050H Realtek Codec and how AMD have bridged the I2S to allow for chipset audio control via USB 2 vs traditional CPU connection. We also test the 16 phase VRM vs the 8 Phase VRM on the Creator TRX40... and well let's just say, that bigger isn't always better :).

    7:35 95*C? 😳 Is this because of the Enermax Liqtech AIO? It's well known that it clogs up with time and temps skyrocket. Maybe that's what we're witnessing here? 95*C is not normal when running the CPU at stock with an 360 AIO that covers the whole heat spreader of the CPU.

    I have an Asus ROG Zenith II Extreme, and I'm fairly certain all four PCIe slots are x16, but it looks like if you toss in more the two GPUs, it scales the PCIe lanes, so two slots end up being x8. However, I've tested with two GPUs, and no matter the slot the cards are in, they always run at x16. It also depends on the usage of m.2 slots and what not. But it appears all 4 slots are perfectly capable of PCIe 4.0 x16 on their own.

    ESS SABRE qdacs can cause some funny results when using 3rd party audio software. I would take the highest quality audio file, like a 32bit FLAC and listen to the file and compare it to other boards. I was having issues with audio software myself. But, the actual audio file i tested sounds perfect on my $500 Sennheiser's through an old LGv20 and even on my new phone which is a v50 also with an ESS qdac. Listening to the same file on the ESS SABRE 9018 qdac in the z370 Aorus Gaming 7, also with a 2Vrms 3.5mm hadphone jack, they both sound identical. I think the ESS chip isn't supported or when a qdac like the ESS converts the signal, the results become smeared. The clarity when using those SABRES are unmatched.

A lot of people complain of raising temperatures after 6 months of usage. • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you thinking an air cooler wouldn’t be good enough for the 32-64 core parts at stock or something? You wouldn’t need a massive one for just stock (my 1950x was fine up to 450w cpu power on an old 120mn AIO that only covers 1/3 the IHS), these are not hard to cool like Intel (the 9900k is freaken lava... It’s insanely small and the power draw is basically the same as the 64 core Threadripper, so the thermal density is insane). Threadripper could be cooler just fine with a PBO overclock on a good or decent TR4 air cooler. You won’t get every last ounce out of it (I’m aiming for -100c with triple cascade for when the TR-64 core comes out as my next daily upgrade, hoping for 128 threads at 5 GHz), but a big air cooler would be fine especially if you’re not overclocking, don’t worry about it, these chips are easy to keep cool, it doesn’t take much.
      By massive massive air cooler he meant something close to performance of a water cooler and overclocking to the limits, that the boards would still be fine. (I’ll probably end up using a similar board to one of these for even LN2 overclocking, because at that temp the entire board frosts over so VRM doesn’t run hot anyways and even at that these boards should provide plenty of power delivery for even the 64 core, it’s just that at this level of fun competition every last Mhz counts so even a minor improvement can win you the bragging rights, but it’s not needed, and it’s just for fun, similar to car racing it’s just about having fun)

      It's most likely because there are a lot more PCI-E devices that you can connect to the TRX40 motherboards thanks to the 72 usable PCI-E lanes. If you use a lot of these lanes simultaneously, things might get toasty pretty quickly. The X570 chipset only has 20 usable PCI-E lanes - much much less.

      The Poltical One give it a few weeks for the enthusiasm and euphoria to die down a little and let actual people who daily-drive these chips post their experiences with actual software, not benchmarking tools. @bgtubber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sniper1pk Why do you think that very few people that got TR1 and TR2 will be buying TR3?
      BTW, ~95% of the benchmarks in the reviews I've watched and read so far are based on actual software so not sure what you are trying to say? Cinebench is Cinema 4D - actual software; Blender - actual software; 7-Zip - actual software; Adobe Premiere Pro CC - actual software; V-Ray - actual software; Corona Benchmark is Corona - actual software. Mozilla compiling - actual workload; Do I need to go on? The only ones that are not really actual software are maybe ~5% of all benchmarks shown such as CPU-Z and Geek Bench.

    • @sniper1pk
      @sniper1pk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bgtubber I run a small VFX studio and i got a couple of 1950Xs and a 2950 to supplement our mostly x79 and x299 pipeline. The amount of downtime we've faced due to AMD's laggy performance, system hangs and general compatibility issues caused us to actually lose revenue due to missed deadlines. Even using them for their fabled "raw compute power" frequently resulted in over-night sequence renders getting stuck, point caches getting corrupted, Fluid simulations getting miscalculated. We're making heavy use of Houdini, followed by 3ds max (FumeFX, Tyflow, thinkingparticles), realflow, nuke and occasionally Maya. all of these are industry standard software and well-threaded. Our CPU rendering is based on Arnold and Vray. Redshift for GPU rendering (AMD GPUs are dead on arrival in GPU renderers btw).
      Cinebench may be made by Maxon who make C4D but the actual software goes through a lot of optimization to make use of Intel only technologies ('middleware').. Some that I can think of right away are Math Kernel Library , Thread Building Blocks, Embree and so on.
      The same applies to Chaos Group's Vray and Corona. Benchmarks are hardware agnostic, and have zero user input, but the actual rendering plugins that are used in production, installed in the host software (be it 3ds max, Maya, Houdini, C4D) are a very different thing.
      Problem is, AMD has zero middleware support (both CPUs and GPUs), which is why benchmarks tell a very different story from the software they are supposedly based on. Given their attitude and approach of slapping cores upon cores, while keeping an unstable, un-robust architecture, its unlikely to change in the near future.

    • @bgtubber
      @bgtubber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sniper1pk That's really strange. We have a few Threadripper 1950x machines that we bought 2 years ago which we use 24/7 for rendering and scene creation in 3ds Max with Vray and we've never had any issues so far, neither with corrupt files, nor with slow speed or crashes and hangs. We are also running a few Intel i7 machines in the mix and everything still works perfectly fine together. No corrupt files, no slowdowns, no missed deadlines in the 2 years we've been using them (knock on wood). My point is, the problems you're observing aren't coming from using AMD CPUs since we don't experience any of them with any of our AMD Threadripper machines. What you are describing might be a different issue. For example, faulty RAM is one of the main reasons for corrupt files and system crashes and hangs. Faulty disks and network controllers can also cause similar problems. If you have overclocked the CPUs and/or RAM, this can also be very bad for stability if done incorrectly.

      Just keep an extra set of high speed RAM... on the Ryzen boards they have a bug where if it fails to post sometimes it never will until you add in say a 3600 XMP kit (even if you never had it set above 2133 MHz, or even if your CPU could never hit that XMP even on one stick). Asrock X370 Fatal1ty but according to the forum that helped me figure it out it also affects Intel boards from Asrock.
      So you either need a set of unrealistically high speed (for first gen), or you’ll have to RMA your board occasionally... yay, way to not put a duel BIOS chip like even the old cheapo AM3+ garbage tier boards had...
      Also on the X399 (Threadripper) platform (haven’t had the issue since I only run 3600 or higher on it), about half the time you can only get 1/2/3 sticks to work after installing new memory. BIOS will say “quad channel”, but say only 8-16-24 GB useable. CPU-z can see the extras (like I had 6x 8 GB sticks but only 16-24GB could work at base level speed 2133Mhz, but CPUz could detect each stick in windows and show the XMP profiles and vendor for each slot, but the board wouldn’t show the OS the full amount). You end up painstakingly taking the water loop or whatever off (just awesome for hardline water cooled quad crossfire, let me tell ya...) slapping the CPU off the desk a few times scolding it like a dog (there are no pins to bend, so I’m being serious when I say scold the CPU, shouting seems to relieve some of the anger after the 15th time it’s been out of the socket and the 20th time adding sticks one at a time), then cross your fingers and prey the thing actually lets you use all the memory.... It will often work after the 10th time, but sometimes it’s 6 hours of pulling hair to get it to use/bench a new kit of RAM. I’ve never had this issue on my AM3+ Asrock or my AM4 board using all the sticks, but TR4 is just janky! Also seems to help if you have it warm, so if you’re room is around freezing be thankful if it even boots with 16 GB! I’ve had to use a hair drier to warm it up before... and yeah, I actually use my computer to warm up my room so that’s a problem, the last week it’s been running 6x Handbrake batch file encodes at once compressing my bloated videos of all the stupid stuff I do (maybe I should just run a jet engine on diesel to heat up my room... IDK, I think using quad crossfire and Threadripper sounds more reasonable, but I always need an excuse to buy a turbojet, Aerospace engineer if you didn’t guess, lol!)

    Asrock looks cheap and crappy, as always

      Their boards look way better in person, when you pick up a Threadripper Asrock board (they do look like $hit in pictures I totally agree), but when you pick it up they are freaken beefy! They also look way nicer. I’m more industrial, I like the look of CNC machined parts and a brushed aluminum finish on some of the accents. They are quite a monster when you have them in person (this comes from someone who uses their system with quad crossfire pulling on average just over 1.7 kW when gaming, running Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra at 100fps, though I want to upgrade to quad Vega VII for triple 4k if they are unlocked for Xfire like they might just have been). Anyways, they look very premium and beefy in person, but the cheaper X370 ones still do look pretty “meh” (like alright, as in they will handle LN2 overclocking just fine, and the X370 Fatal1ty I have does go up to 2.5 Vcore so more than enough to instantly fry any RYZEN even on liquid helium, but they don’t look like “damn, you see those sexy VRMs that can jump start a car?!?” kind of look)
