    Minor criticism: I feel like overclocked results could use some color coding or some other visual indicator (like just a little dot next to the number or something) on these crowded graphs so that it's easier to compare apples to apples at a glance. Having the clock/voltage on the side is great, but I think that readability could be improved so that I don't have to constantly pause to get the full information load of the video. Keep up the great work!

      @adityaghosal1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I have always wanted these as well being a fellow home studio producer, but the problem is every plugin behaves differently with the added issue that all producers/engineers might not even use the said 'plugin' and then on top of that when you count the number of choices in DAWs nowadays, it comes down to a staggering amount of variables with each Daw favoring and handling tasks based on core frequencies/threads differently than the other. But I agree, they can add a fairly popular daw as Ableton live/Pro tools/Cubase with several instances of a plugin that takes a lot of resources (Serum comes to my mind as one) and then calculating the Cpu usage/render times.

Honestly the CPU is for VFX work in Houdini, not specifically for Audio projects. But inevitably I use it for that too. The core count is useful both in Reaper and Bitwig, but for example in VCV Rack I can only use 6 threads, until it just keels over and audio glitches out. I don't actually right now own any other computer that goes over 6 threads, so I don't know if it's a VCV Rack specific issue, or TR2 specific issue. But that's the only hiccup I have with it. So far I haven't actually had any trouble using VCV, so it's not really limiting me. But I bet that works much better on the new TR3.

    You really ought to separate the HEDT parts from the Mainstream parts in your rankings. If I'm in the market for a render machine, PCIe lanes for super fast storage also become important. There's no way I'd be looking at a mainstream Intel or AMD part for that sort of build.
    Overclocked results shouldn't be posted either. They should be relegated to an overclocking section in your video near the end or something. Folks that work, can't be bothered fiddling with vCore and other settings when their machine decides to one day no longer be stable at a given overclock due to a rise in the ambient temperature in the office.
    The way it is now, I have to constantly pause the video to make sense out of which part is which. Just a suggestion as I had to go elsewhere to get an actual review and be able to compare the HEDT parts without having the same part figure multiple times in the same graph at different overclocked frequencies and a bunch of mainstream parts thrown in for god knows what reason. What I'm suggesting is as logical as your reasoning for not focusing on gaming benchmarks for HEDT parts.

  • @WraithWTF
    @WraithWTF 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you GN for keeping in mind that Intel CPUs generally have a significant amount of overclocking headroom, and actually testing the 10980XE both with and without a real overclock on it. This gives a much fairer look at what the CPU is actually capable of, and strangely enough, thus far this channel is the only channel to actually test the 10980XE with an actual overclock on it...the only other channel to test anything other than stock values was Paul's Hardware, and all he did was Asus' EZ Mode AI OC, which didn't exactly push the CPU all that much.
    It's nice to see how far AMD has come with Threadripper, and I think I understand now why they couldn't just stick with TR4 to get this kind of generational leap in performance.

    Time to be a little critical of this review. Why are the benchmarks limited to graphical workloads?
    There are benchmarks designed for high performance computers (HPC) recognized by the industry like HPC Challenge, TPC database benchmarks via for example HammerDB with Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Developer (free) or HiBench for testing with Hadoop (BigData) database for testing with 19 workloads (micro transaction, machine learning, sql, graph, websearch and streaming).
    and CISL. These benchmarks do not only test raw IPC performance, but also interconnects, memory, disk IO and several advanced instruction sets like encryption and virtualization extensions needed for VDI applications..
    These benchmarks are realworld HPC applications. Usually 4GB of memory per thread is advised, meaning a 32c/64t CPU needs 256GB memory (8 x 32GB). Most graphical designers also use GPU acceleration for rendering.

    11:35 I believe the main reason 7-Zip is slower compressing than decompressing. When compressing; the dictionary is being built, making threading much harder (virtually impossible, it's impressive that it still scales so well!). For decompressing; the dictionary is immutable so the cores can all have their own copy in their own cache.
    Sure, the core count is the headliner, but the size of CPU cache has never expanded at such a rate. I think it's only a matter of time until we see chiplets of HBM L3/4 cache, I wouldn't be surprised if any of the next consoles implemented this actually.

      @z3 "Lazy Adobe engineers" ....dont know about it being the engineers in particular, but Adobe as a whole for sure. They dont care to keep up, because they already have their claws in AND a complete corporate ethic of greed: Take everything you can, the consumer is not even an afterthought.

    Hi Steve, thanks for the great content :) Did you change something on the video compression settings? I am getting alot of grain and overall the video looks less sharp. Its especially noticable starting at 24:37. The black wall on your right and the shadow you cast underneath the table on your right.

      Oooh, those look neat. Not asetek, cheap, good fans, and i like the VRM fan idea (though cryorig already did that, just not quite as elegantly)
      Wonder how they bypassed the patent

    I would expect most workstations using hedt parts to be using 4k monitors. At 4k as long as the cpu can reach the ~100fps mark, it should be enough to max out any gpu and having a faster gaming cpu wouldn't make a difference anyway. Seems like the new threadripper part hits that mark just fine.
