7700K became obsolete in a few months. 10980XE became obsolete in a few HOURS. Damn.

"How many TRX40 motherboards would you like" Hardware Unboxed " yes"
Intel for years used business practices to keep AMD out of pre-builds for years. They never really innovated, but only did incremental increases and charging more money because you needed a new motherboard to take advantage of the "new" processor. No love for them at all. They have the money and fab factories, yet never bothered going forward. They felt comfortable and safe. Now, a "consumer" processor from AMD is faster than their 2+ core advantage HEDT from Intel.
Those that stayed with AMD, and that helped them stay alive, even at the expense of not having the "best", you can see what has now happened. AMD is crushing it.
Gotta admit those are the unsung heroes

Public companies have one purpose to exists: To make as much money as possible for the share holders. If you can do that without investing too much for innovation..then you cut from innovation. Because Intel has been shoving quad cores down everyone's throats and overcharging everyone for it for over a decade.
Because Intel has always played dirty, bribing OEMs to not make AMD computers. They lost that court case and still haven't paid the fine.
Because people want innovation AMD can't innovate because Intel shitty past bribing forcing AMD to almost bankruptcy, AMD have such little R&D budget yet they innovate while Intel has billions decide to use that budget to bribe instead of innovate forcing quad core for almost a decade, this show what AMD can do if they have the budget and this is not even their final form.

That was a fantastic episode, Robert is a great communicator and it would do AMD well to have him participating in the community(aka, the media) more. In fact, it would be nice to see AMD do what Intel was doing a bit ago sponsoring LTT's videos; get these monster products out in front of the camera with real world example tests/demonstrations to illustrate just how powerful they really are. Granted, the amount of Intel sponsored LTT videos quickly got out of hand and every build was the same 7980xe system with Optane involved in some irrelevant way, which I'm sure contributed to why LTT hasn't had many Intel videos like that in a while.
IIRC, the video is titled "AMD talks 3rd gen Threadripper" or something to that extent, must see. He talks about why the socket change, the 'high prices', all of that stuff.

the 10980xe became obsolete in literally hours.. wow!
Where is Intel's God now? Their precious i9 9900K is getting beaten in games.
(3900X owner here - brand agnostic) To be fair, the 9900K is much cheaper and overclocks well. The 9900KS, lame refresh that it may be is still a well binned pre-OCed 9900K and is still the beast mode "gaming only" rig top choice, at least for current titles (not sure how 8 cores will age in a market with increasing core counts). The minute you have a mixed workload, the R9 chips stand out. The new TR3 chips are spectacular but anyone buying these for a dedicated gaming PC has an effectively unlimited budget.
Admittedly, my inner geek desperately wants a 3990X rig, not because I have any reasonable use case (hell, I struggle to load 12 cores in my day to day use) but just because I wants the 64 coresss.... I wants the preciousssss! (ahem)
Also, Zen 3 might well see Intel lose the gaming crown to an R9 chip.
@@paranoidrodent People who are buying 2080TIs have effectively unlimited budget. And I suspect TR3 with even faster memory, Infinity Fabric overclock, manual tuning of timings, and it's 10% higher FPS. So for competitive gamers I think it might be worth it.
Though Zen 3 almost certainly will take the crown. Though if Zen 3 has only two channel memory, it should at least have higher clocking Infinity Fabric or it might be heavily memory bound.
I'm waiting Steve (or someone) to test 3950X + Best AIO + PBO2 Enabled + Infinity Fabric max overclock + fastest memory configured with Ryzen DRAM Calculator to lowest timings. This should be the fastest gaming CPU. Though TR3 with the same method should be even faster.
Sweet sweet victory and its not even AMD finsl form.
You know what my favorite part about this whole HEDT thing is? The cost of Windows 10 vs. Windows Server:
Windows 10 Pro x64 license for an HEDT PC with 3960X - $199 MSRP
Windows Server 2019 licenses (Open Volume license)for 24-core Epyc CPU - $123x12 = $1476 MSRP
Windows 10 Pro x64 license for an HEDT PC with 3970X - $199 MSRP
Windows Server 2019 licenses (Open Volume license)for 32-core Epyc CPU - $123x16 = $1968 MSRP
Windows 10 Pro x64 license for an HEDT PC with 3990X - $199 MSRP
Windows Server 2019 licenses (Open Volume license)for 64-core Epyc CPU - $123x32 = $3936 MSRP
To be fair, this isn't just a benefit of Threadripper. Intel's HEDT stuff also benefits. It's just that AMD now has so many cores in their HEDT platform that it really drives home the cost savings if you want to run a CPU-hungry piece of software that is designed to run on Windows.

AMD had free sync and Nvidia had to steal it from AMD because AMD made FREE sync a industry standard now you are seeing free sync monitores being rebrand has G-sync compatible and free sync being removed on there monitor boxes...
BTW RTX SUCK and that is easier to proof by comparison with RX 5700 XT if you turn on all the features on Rx 5700 XT your fps doesn't tank has hard to comparison RTX 2070S has you turn RTX on with RTX 2070S your FPS tanks so hard that all Nvidia fanboys are forced to turn it off because becomes unplayable and if you use DLSS you get worse image quality then AMDs Rx 5700 XT, BTW Rx 5700 xt trade blows with RTX 2070S in most games with costing less money, and don't try to argue with RTX ON because the only GPU capable of doing it is RTX 2080 Ti a 1200$+ GPU.
Until AMD start to make Ray tracing it doesn't matter how much Nvidia wants to push RTX forward because developers don't care about Nvidia property drivers, since AMD has a free driver standard developers will program to AMD hardware and guess what PS5 and the new Xbox will have AMD hardware on it..
Big Navi is coming in 2020 and will be a beast of GPU delivery performance close to RTX 2080 ti at half of the price.
2 gen Navi will have Ray tracing support via hardware acceleration by then and only then will start to be a standard.
@@hugobalbino2041 First off Nvidia invented adaptive sync, AMD copied them. I don't give a shit about raytracing, and I agree RTX sucks. I just want something faster than my 1080Ti, so far AMD hasn't done that (hence the first two comments of this thread). If AMD can deliver with "big Navi" then by all means I'll buy it, but I'm skeptical it can beat Nvidia. AMD at 7nm is only now matching Nvidia 16nm (1080Ti). Nvidia 7nm could very well blow AMD away.
You know, Steve, seeing all those impressive gaming numbers, I just realized that TR3000 will enable a diabolical plan of employers to keep their employees longer in office:

Nice product AMD!
If Cache write and read speeds makes such a difference in gaming then ZEN 3 has to be a monster with it's unified Cache alongside the IPC and Frequency boost
mhh3 I was just thing the same thing... next year threatripper will rip this years treathripper to pieces... I am not even talking about Intel... I compare Zen3 based treathripper to Zen2 based treathripper... Intel is out of the competition at least two years from now!
Good thing! Intel wil come back, but it does take time. Expect some more price cuts from Intel :)
Are these cache tests the total bandwidth among all the cores? I personally don't believe the cache speeds are the reason why TR3 rocks at gaming, I think it's purely the 4 channel memory. That should lower the memory latency and make it 100% sure that bandwidth is there at all times.
I hope someone would test 3900X & 3950 & 3970X all with PBO2 enabled, best AIOs + Infinity Fabric clocked to max and the fastest memory that money can buy, configured with Ryzen DRAM calculator to use the lowest possible timings. I'm almost certain that this would make 3900X as fast as 9900KS on games, 3950X about 5-10% faster (at least if you allocate all processes to last core and allow the game to use the rest) and 3970X another 5% faster than 3950X.
Cache and IPC is the way forward. We have potentially reached the limit of clock speeds at around 5-5.2 ghz. There's only so much heat a chip can take before it becomes unstable.
@Juzu Juzu
But how does quad channel impact latency? It’s just more bandwidth, not faster clocked and not with better timings.

Remember I told you about the Interconnect bottleneck on AM4? I know that you were sceptical
TR Zen 2 CCDs have two 32 byte /cycle interconnects between each CCD and the IO die. GPU memory access bandwidth is not impacting CPU core memory access the same way it does on the single interconnect per CCD AM4 chips
Interesting, did they employ the same for 3950X? Just seems like these last couple releases by AMD have been a step above everything else. They definitely hit on something that can compete with Intel's ringbus which was the last big advantage they had.
@@The_Man_In_Red No, not as far as I am aware. The Ryzen dual CCD chips can benefit if the memory that is addressed to the GPU is hosted in the L3 Cache on both dies, it reduces the load on each of the inerconnects. Falls down if the scheduler places everything on the same die though.
The design concept of these chips is brilliant but is still partly compromised due to power/temp limitations in my opinion.
Maybe zen 3 will add the 2nd interconnects to Ryzen? they need to hold something back for their next 15% IPC gain

Seriously, look at that! It's absolutely bananas! Look at how well these TR chips were binned and optimized!
u can edit video & play 4 games & watch netflix & stream on twitch & watch porn hub all in the same time on 3970x
Don't forget you could also start a virtual machine allocate some core and use it as a minecraft server.
We have witnessed a murder my friends. Rip
Intel should begin to consider the underdog position seriously.
RIP
Intel I9-10980XE

When Zen 3 arrives I think I will go Thread Ripper
25th of November is the new Christmas, confirmed seeing how Steve has a "happy unboxing shirt" :awoooo:
AMD. Congratulations. Thank you for stirring some serious shit in the desktop x86 space. Finally it's become an exciting market again and I never get tired seeing intel being crushed by a company 10x smaller. Thank you AMD!
5 years ago you couldn't give AMD FX processors away much...now today I've personally built a dozen Ryzen systems for friends and have a Ryzen 9 3900X powered machine just kicking ass and taking names in it's wake. This is the competition Intel needs badly. Folks the PC market is gonna get a whole lot more fun real quick.
Intel : we are king of gaming! Best of the best!
AMD : Can you make the game?
Intel : has left the chat........
Thumbnail: "Best Dekstop CPU ever"
Ok
So 32 cores is the pure minimum in modern Gaming rig! ;)
nice :)
AMD really glued something together...
Intel : AMD that's is illegal!
AMD : you can't stop me now.
Intel: AMD haha we have the I9 10980XE....
AMD: Intel nice we have the Ryzen 3950 mainstream CPU to compete to your HEDT I9 10980XE......
Intel: .........
AMD: What you want to say Intel?
I've never heard you so excited Steve than that Battlefield 5 preformance.
Threadripper is now "fastest gaming CPU"
Welp. This is unexpected.
Amazing results, great work AMD, and thank you yet again Steve for an excellent and comprehensive review!
Now AMD really needs high-end GPUs to go along all this Ryzen 3000 & Thread Ripper 3000 magic in order to put more pressure on team hulk :O
For the complete home run they really need the halo GPU, right?
Red=Ironman, they only need to create Hulk buster to get the jobs done.
What great work guys. Thanks for all the hours.
Oh wow
I love the new highlights you guys added to... highlight the products being compared for people who can’t follow product names like me!
Soon at HUB: We build a $10000 3970X Gaming Build!
Exiting news! Can't wait to see the Zenith II reviews as I plan on sticking with the Zenith line for now.
Intel fanboy : "Bbbbut Intel faster in gaming"
AMD : 12:39
Steve, damn good job here! Wow, just wow. Intel is always about "refresh", while AMD is all about "fresh"! Love it. I just snagged a 3900X myself. Keep up the great work, you guys rock🤟
Don't just wait for Zen 3 will be much better and be released at first quarter of 2020.
That gaming result though...
I guess Intel should change their logo to "Infail inside"
Wait. Are there even any compromises with those CPUs apart from price?
They don't have AVX512... yet.
@@johnm2012 they can do avx512 though... Maybe even at same performance
@@florin604 AMD decided not to implement AVX512 as it's largely a waste of silicon real estate and doesn't fit the one-chiplet-fits-all model. It will happen when AMD decides it's appropriate.
Today's Threadripper 3970X is 2040's entry-level Ryzen 9500.
Intel : *I don't feel so good*
I am not paying any attention to Steve just reading through the comments but I will see that review for sure Steve! I just want to say as an AMD funboy since 2004 this is how you change the mindshare! All of you people in this comment section are speaking so highly and I feel proud because throughout the dark years I kept somehow with many other funboys this company afloat.
remember the ram speed was 3200mhz think about 3600mhz.👀
Exactly what I was thinking
I'm blown away by these results - both production, but also gaming! I was literally shouting "What the f**k" (in my own language) when I saw the first gaming benchmarks. Even though I did expect even significant improvements over the previous gen, I did NOT see this coming!
