      Yeah but my aim will be 5 GHz (I hope -100c will be enough to hit that, I think it should but that’s a lot of cores and it only takes one slow one to limit that all core speed...). I kinda fell behind on making the cooler because of so much overtime at work, but maybe that means by the time I’ll get around to it that the TR-64 core might be on a small sale, haha!

      Well we will see some of the features on consumer boards. I didnt even know that you can buy 90A VRMs now. These halo-products are always interesting, even if most cant afford them. Look at something like the Sennheiser HE1 Orpheus. Who can or would pay 60K for a headphone system. Its the best you can get, some say better than a listening room with speekers for 250k. I would buy some if I could. But whats even more interesting is what of that you can buy in a future product thats more "affordeble" like 3000$. They make around 250 HE1 per Year. You can be sure its not enough to cover the research and development.

      I think everyone that wants that level of performance would still be able to use more, it’s like buying a Farrari and saying “but who would ever want to go over the 15 mph school zone speed limit”, like obviously your wanting power and performance (and paying a lot for it too), so why not take an hour and get a decent performance boost since you apparently needed or wanted it.

    It's very nice that mobo manufacturers compete in VRM temps now. It took them a good while before actually getting their shit together (putting propper heatsinks on the VRM for starters) but it's drastically better today than it was 5 years ago. It's also nice to finally see the superior boards go to AM4.

    I have the 1st gen threadripper 1900x, my gigabyte mobo had only just died last week and just had the ASUs Rog Zenith Extreme Alpha x399 come in. Overclocked my cpu to 4.1ghz and I’m tweaking it to get more out of it. Also in a few months I’m going with the ASUs Rog Zenith II Extreme alpha with a 3960x and two RTX 2080 Ti’s. It’s going to be nuts

    • @einsteinx2
      @einsteinx2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m curious, what kind of workload are you running to take advantage of the dual 2080ti’s?
      I’m almost certainly building a TR system for my next workstation, probably 3970x or whatever the 4XXX equivalent is. My main workload is code compilation and running multiple VMs, so I think my workloads are for the most part all CPU, so I’m interested to heard from people that have high GPU workloads to see where they help with.

    • @DanteArmarosTech
      @DanteArmarosTech 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben Baron it’s really just for multiply screens. Also I’ve always had duel GPU’s. More of a enthusiast kind of thing also things like adobe take advantage of cuda cores when rendering. But I also plan to have multiple pc setups in my studio I’m building so I will then keep and carry parts over to those.

    • @saxtremer
      @saxtremer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yourick1953 actually not sure about that. these 320 cores are clocked at 2.3 ghz and have only triple amount of cache. Besides, ivy bridge doesn't support avx2 and 512 as modern xeons do. Finally, there's a lot of communication overhead in case of 32 processors on 16 nodes. Having less cores (with more IPC/higher freq) is beneficial in terms of scalability, too, as the workload may not scale linearly. It's hard to test, as I don't have the 3990x, but I'm sure it would be a pretty close battle. It's when overclocking might come in handy (oh boi these 850 watt are insane for a single cpu).

Asus announced the Alpha only a couple months after I purchased the original and as an OC'er that would benefit from the better VRM's, that is a kick in the stomach. The biggest issue for me with the Asus motherboard is the PCI slot spacing. I want a board that can take 4 dual slot graphics cards without having to resort to water-cooling. For this reason the Gigerbyte Aorus Extreme is a much better board to base a 3d rendering build on. If Asus had done some research with 3d artists they should have realized this as most 3d renderers are moving to support GPU.

    Question for HUB: Are YOU folks going to build a 3990 rendering/production system? If so, are YOU going to overclock it?

    • @Hardwareunboxed
      @Hardwareunboxed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No we will use the 3970X, we probably won't overclock it.

    • @sadlerbw9

      Thanks for the reply. Would you say that is more because you don't want to give up the warranty, or because the potential performance gains aren't enough to make it worthwhile? I think you folks are actually the target market for this CPU, so what you would do and why is pretty important!

    Can I download more cores?

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately not (that used to be a thing even with Intel selling unlock keys. AMD used to also have unlockable extra cores). As for downloading more cores like my R9 Fury series you actually can download BIOS that will unlock some extra (sort of like some cards like RX470/480 could sometimes unlock Vram from 4 GB to 8 GB). So those you either downloaded tools to do so (like check the cards and see if it was possible, then download the BIOS modding tools or the pre-customized BIOS and boom! You suddenly downloaded more cores and performance!). TR-64 core is at the max count with all chip let’s enabled (it was debated if first gen could be unlocked with capacitors since like my TR-1950x is a “16 core” but really has 32 physical cores it’s just that half the chiplets are “dummy dies” even though they are real chiplets but probably just broken ones). Also maybe someday someone will mod say the 24 core into 32 or something etc, but it defiantly won’t happen for this one because it’s already fully unlocked.

    Try the ROG Strix TRX40-E Gaming with Bios 0807 please and see how it goes. In fact, try all the boards released before the Alpha. Dirty Asus intentionally locked the DRAM speed to 2133mhz without even noting it in the download page. You'll have to dig into the CPU compatibility page to see that note. And this is the response when I talked to them "The current Bios that you are on is a requirement to run the CPU as such you are unfortunately locked at that speed. We can understand the frustration this may cause however, this is the most up to date BIOS that we have at this time as we have not received any updates as to if this will be addressed in further updates". Not sure why Asus is the only vendor that has the 2133mhz "requirement" to run the 3990X. And "you are unfortunately locked at that speed" wtf?

    Guys can someone help me out with UPS VA reqs?

    • @shaynegadsden
      @shaynegadsden 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      VA is basically Watts except no power factor correction is applied simple way to workout the size get a plug in watt meter measure your power draw don't forget to include the monitor and anything else you need running once you have that number multiple by the amount of time you want it to run in hours add 10% for worst case power factor correction and that's the size you need for example: total draw is 450w you want 1 hour so still 450w plus 10% = 495w so you would look for a UPS with a minimum of 500va

Just checked my order, sold by amazon and with only a $25 markup from MSRP, not as bad of a scalping I got (but knowingly went into) for the 3090. I went with a blackout theme, minimal lights mostly black parts (GPU has lights on it, NZXT water block has an LCD display, board has lights too, everything else, no lights).
