    Planning on getting the Taichi version with Threadripper 3970x and 64GB memory, pair that with two 1TB NVMe cards using the built in M.2 slots, the supplied Hyper Quad M.2 card containing two 1TB NVMe cards and a separate ASRock Thunderbolt 3 AIC R2.0 PCI Express 3.0 x4 Card. GPU-wise I am waiting for the Big Navi to drop later this year, so running on Linux Mint x64 19.3 it should be an interesting build.

    Love how you do motherboard reviews. A lot more function over VRM quality compared to buildzoid. I don't care too much about high end vrms if the board has a good amount of IO and still gets get clocks with no major flaws.

    • @md.imamulislam7

      Buildzoid's target audience is overclockers. Wendell's target audience is pro-workstation crowd.

    • @lanceshelley7061
      @lanceshelley7061 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you might want to re-think that ! the quality of the vrm is what regulate's the power going to the different components poor vrm's means less stability

    • @Ming-Chan
      @Ming-Chan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lanceshelley7061 Well I mean it in a sense where you don't need 16+ phases so overbuilt you don't even need passive cooling. The 8-phase is just fine for current TR 3000 cpus and has enough passive cooling on top of it.

    Are there any TRX40 motherboards that you would recommend for a home server build for compatibility with a bare metal hypervisor?

  • @rocnroll0065
    @rocnroll0065 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I hope someone will build a Hackintosh daul boot system with TRX40 motherboard that has the thunderbolt compatibility so we can see how silly the new Mac Pro really looks at the 6,000.00 8core/16thread entry fee. Plus I'm betting and hoping that the higher end binned chips for TRX40 will have noticeable gains in latency in Digital Audio Workstation environments for home studios.

    • @oblitafier

      Rocnroll 00 AMD caught Intel and Apple with their pants down. I’m sure Apple already know a 64 core Threadripper system is going to destroy a full spec Mac Pro at half the price. Looks like Apple are locking Mac down with the T2 chip. That fantastic chip that renders expensive high-end USB 2.0 audio interfaces unusable.

    Nick Shih got 1TB (8 128GB dimms) of ecc ram working on numerous ASRock x299/X motheboards. I'm sure TRX40 could do the same, maybe.
    ASRock is not only using DrMos but the DrMos phases are actually intersil's (RENESAS) new ISL99390 90A Smart Power Stages with 90A Magic chokes and Solid State Tantalum Capacitors. Going through intersil's new ISL69247 PWM pushing 720A total power and should be enough for the 64c 128t monster.

    • @Level1Techs
      @Level1Techs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the story is more interesting than that -- intel later gimped registered ecc support on x299. It does not work on any current bios, or with 10 series cpus, because microcode. you can only run 7 or 8 series intel cpus with ancient bioses to get support for 128gb reg ecc dimms.

    Have a 3960X on the MSI Creator board. Running 4 DIMM 32 GB DDR4 3733 CL17 with the FCLK synced, no issues so far. The onboard audio worked for me out of the box on Windows, Fedora 31, and Arch. TRX40 platform is crazy for sure, I have Windows on PCIe 4 NVMe RAID 0, and Arch on a single one of those drives right now. Went in planning to buy this board but decided that I liked the slot layout on the MSI board more. Kind of regret it; I hate MSI's UEFI but as far as functionality goes I can't complain.

    Am I understanding correctly that there are 5 ports to plug case fans in? If so I'm maxing out the 10 120mm case fans my case allows and going dual fan with my cooler so will have 11 fans in total, this means I would need to get a fan hub? I also do not care about RGB. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello L1 team! Im using that board! Based on my task manager readout, my AE appears to be using all of my 128 GB of memory on my thread ripper build using this board. I'm using 4x 32 sticks which I read was the best memory config for TRX40 boards. Would I see smoother performance with AE if I upgrade to 256?

    @7:14 does it support 256GB RAM at 2666Mhz or is it 128GB at 2666Mhz? 32x4=128 not 256.

    • @CheapBastard1988
      @CheapBastard1988 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course he meant 8x32GB=256GB @ 2666MHz as this is the maximum amount of RAM. The 4x8GB is for maximum supported speed (3200MHz) as 4 sticks mean only 1 stick per channel is occupied and 8GB is the maximum capacity for single ranked memory (a 16GB stick is dual ranked).

    • @JulianUccetta
      @JulianUccetta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my Zenith II Extreme with 4 sticks of RAM I could get as high as 3000Mhz stable, with 8 sticks (256GB total) I am only able to reach 2933Mhz, and even that is if I make the timings loose as a goose. 2666Mhz is the most stable with 8 sticks -- for this reason if you go Threadripper + 8 sticks of RAM for quad channel I HIGHLY recommend getting ram with SUPER low latency to try and make up for the speed limitation.

    • @AdamFJH
      @AdamFJH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JulianUccetta I'm currently running 2733 Mhz CL12 with 8 sticks of RAM with my 1950x. I would prefer to run them at 3200 Mhz CL14 to increase IF speed. Also the RAM is actually 3600 Mhz CL17 so it seems like quite a waste to be running them at 2733 Mhz. AMD needs to improve their memory latency and memory controller.

    Hey buddy, quick question. How come when I set my 64gb kit 3600 16191932 memory and CPU settings to auto with a 3960x on a zenith II extreme my cinebench r20 score is over 14000 yet when I set docp it drops down to around 13250? The ram runs at 2133 with cas of 15151528 but bump it with docp to 3600 161919 and it drops a lot. I don't understand. All the other benchmarks like geekbench and userbench go up with docp but not r20.
