This was a great bit of reality tv, as there are several things going on, all at once. First of all, the back story for how & why it became part of the culture. Having to resort to eating tarantulas, and all sorts of other similar bugs, animals, vegetation, etc, just to survive the brutal dictatorship of the Khmer Rouge. Then, having to go out and catch a few of them, which is an intense experience, and also an anxiety riddled exercise. You could see how he was genuinely uneasy about it, and was the same when he had to eat it. Lastly, he obviously didn’t want to offend anyone in that group, but it’s hard to keep cool about something that gives most people the “willies”, and it’s a dangerous activity. He gets a lot of points for going through with it, knowing it’s adding some great content for the show. Bourdain & Andrew Zimmerman went out to enjoy the exotic food from different cultures, and sometimes they sought out the weirdest food items they could find, knowing it expands their palates, allays willing to learn from it. Gordon was way out of his comfort zone, yet went for it anyway. All while trying not to disrespect the different cultures in the places he visited. Good stuff.

I love how Gordon is so open to learning about other cultures around the world and immersing himself in them. My dude.
Yeah, everyone's surprised that he ate a cooked spider but I'm even more surprised that he interacted with the living ones which would be way more difficult for me.
You'll see despite being an expert in his field of western quisine he allows himself to be humbled when learning recipe's from other parts of the world. there was one video of him cooking his idea of a certain asian dish and the asian chef said "thats not how we do it here and gordon was like "oh i thought it was quite good :(".

My family is from Vietnam and it’s true. They normally dine on steak, lobster, crab, buns, pizza, burgers, sushi, BBQ, noodles, rice, but when there’s a foreigner visiting they give them the most fucked up shit to eat it such as rats, grubs, civets, hamsters, or even cats and dogs but only if you wanted it. Although it’s not all the time. Usually they offer them a universally known entree first then give a bizarre dish for dessert, just to see if you’re brave enough to do it (or dumb enough to do it) lol

My aunt is a Cambodian who survived the Khmer Rouge as a child. When she was in a refugee camp in Thailand, she apparently had quite the talent for finding and bringing tarantulas back to the camp.
