    hello Joe. I just discovered your channel because I was looking for an answer to a fencing question. Can I use salt water beach logs for fence posts ? These logs are high and dry, sun bleached, but solid.

    • @JoeEverest

      I don’t see why not, they likely won’t have the same lifespan as an actual fence post but they’ll look really neat!

    Battling with people's conventional wisdom is a battle of futility. I can tell a customer that you never have to wait a year to stain a fence, and why. Their head might be bobbing in an agreeing way, but their eyes are saying "this guy is trying to trick me." It's proof that when something is said enough times, it becomes true.

    Stain/sealed mine a week or two after putting it up. Bought the most expensive product Olympic Max 3 year (semi-transparent) - it stained and put a sealer on the outside that protects. Sprayed and back brushed. Also spray at both angles in between boards, and sprayed the top and bottom ends. Applied 3 yrs later, another 3 yrs and another 5 years. Touched up some spots last year with an oil based stain left over from previous years. Cannot buy the same product now as they are low VOC and do not do the same thing. Fence is not gray and is in great condition. Fence is 20 years old. Searching for a product that I can do another coat with.

      You say 'most expensive product' but its that per gallon, or per square foot? Ready Seal appears rather cheap per gallon, but one gallon only covers 124 sq ft.

      I read somewhere that pressure washing a cedar fence is a no no, so did a regular wash, wait a couple days, then stain solid with a brush. About weather, read the back of the can. Mine said ideal between 50 and 90 and do NOT apply if 35 or lower, or rain/snow expected in the next 24h

  • @cookinitmax
    @cookinitmax 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’m always surprised and maybe wrong on how people never sand a fence before spraying yes more time of course but the stain will last longer.
    So wood as you all know has fibers on it kinda like little finger poking out reaching to the sky.
    Well when you don’t sand the wood them fingers are still poking out with Microscopic openings when you spray your not filling every one of them openings or covering them so to speak allowing water to Penetrate the wood .
    You would never take a ruff cut peace of wood making a peace of furniture and just stain and Varnish over it and call it quits you want it to look good hold up to wear and tear so you sand it to except the stain.
    Well the fence needs to have that type of attention to its wood and going to be put through very harsh conditions rain sun wind the elements of nature.
    So people always wonder why the fence doesn’t look good after so many months or years the wood didn’t get the love it needs to with stand the condition tossed it’s way .
    A tree has all the protection it needs but when we strip it we take them away leaving it naked and bare well it’s unprotected.
    It’s a longer process and you have to either Weigh out the the situation or keep dealing with a fence that looks weathered in a month or a fence that looks great in years.
    Of course that’s up to the home owner.

    • @tylerlockard3065
      @tylerlockard3065 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The sprayer with a pump. it's better to evenly coat. The roller and brush gives uneven amounts of stain which you can tell by when it dries.

    Great content, as I'm considering staining my fence this summer. Question I do have...it was put up by a contractor, and is stained Douglas fir. I have no clue what it was stained with, but it was delivered pre-stained. UV exposed areas are beginning to grey after about a year and a half. The pickets are also rough sawn. How should I prep this fence, and what considerations should I have for the existing stain?

    Would you recommend hanging the pickets first, before staining, or staining them before hanging? Because my concern with staining them after is not being able to get in between the pickets easily. Also, you didn't mention anything about the need to sand the pickets. The pickets I've seen at like Home Depot seem to have a rather coarse texture...would sanding them make them smoother and better looking?

    • @JoeEverest
      @JoeEverest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pre-staining is definitely better. Rough sawn lumber is typically left that way, no sanding.

    What’s the best technique for spraying the side of a face that has the horizontal 2x4’s? I find that I get a lot of build up of stain right under and right below those horizontal boards and it’s hard to brush them out (water based stain). Thanks!

    • @kylebaker8224
      @kylebaker8224 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would this maybe be a situation where it’s better to work against the grain (left to right) instead of top to bottom?

    • @DuhByrd
      @DuhByrd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kylebaker8224 I've no experience in this type of stuff but I think I understand your problem 😅
      The tops and bottoms of you 2x4 so the sides that are 2" are difficult to stain evenly because you've a small gap between each that you have to work between?
      Maybe staining the 2x4s and then installing would work better? I could imagine it taking longer but I'm not sure what kind of time constraints you have. If it's for a personal fence doing it this way and taking a little longer might be a trade off you're willing to make. If it's for a customer you could try over stating the completion time to allow for a perfect stain finish
      I suppose if they're rushing you to finish it boils down to them having to deal with imperfections in rushed work and you toning down the standards you hold yourself to. You can only do as well as you can with the time provided. Hope this helps 🤙

      I would use a 6% bleach and soap pre wash in a pump sprayer and scrub brush then rinse the fence then some oxalic acid about 12 to 16 ounces per gallon of warm water in a pump sprayer. Then stain. There are a lot of videos on TH-cam showing this. Then stain and seal
