    I just got my copy of the Miles Davis UHQR 45rpm after already owning the 33 1/3 LP. Why did I get this? I attempt to answer that question as well as should someone who is just starting out collecting or with a novice audio system consider getting a UHQR? Also, what is a UHQR? Watch the video and find out!

    This is fantastic, possibly your best episode thus far. I believe I have four different copies of Kind of Blue on CD including a "Gold" disc (remember those?) and one vinyl reissue. I will definitly be getting the 45 version now because of you. I have not embraced the 45 album idea. I do not like turning the record over on every song or 2. However, just for the sake of sound I will be getting this one and Rumours. Maybe more, however that is my starter kit for now. I don't know how old you are, but unless you liked listening to 45s and their seven minutes per side in the 50s,-60s-70s, etc. I personally am too old to have to get up a few minutes after sitting down to change sides. But I have a local dealer rip them to 24bit/192khz and I love that. And as far as sound quality? You would be surprised just how close the rips can get. Plus in two to five years a newer, better pressing will come out.

    You'll see, you'll see. In twenty years after you have purchased the umpteenth release of the same music and the value of them starts to decrease, not to mention if you had all of your music on 45's, the enormous amount of space that they will take up, well I think of the David Byrne lyrics; "And you may ask yourself, Well, how did I get here?” Plus you're going to hate getting up every seven-eight minutes to change sides. I've been having many of my Lp's including all of my 45's transferred to digital by a local dealer and loving it. So now my Stevie Ray Vaughn "Couldn't Stand the Weather" and my London( I couldn't believe I found unopened) of the Vienna/Solti 58 to 65 recording of Wagner's Ring, all 17-18 Lp's that I can now listen to in one glorious, continuous performance without having to get up once, okay, maybe go to the bathroom or refresh my drink is a fantastic alternative. All kidding aside, well I'm actually not kidding. P.S., being a drummer have you listened to Billy Cobham's 2 & 1/2 minute all out percussive assault "Storm" from the Crosswinds Lp? The standard pressing puts to shame the CD version

    I am a happy Miles Davis-fan for over half a century. I have been listening and buying his music in all physical forms, reading books and magazines and went to 11 of his performances: in 1984 saw him 3 times in one week. At that La Vilette-Paris concert the bell of his trumpet came to within 1/2 meter of me (there is a picture of that sublime moment, published in the French magazine Actuel). I am puzzled by your extensive interest in all this sonic detail. To me, it's like being interested in the brushes, cloth and the dyes that Picasso used. I am not, but if that's your thing, be my guest. Anyway, I've always wondered about is this: whatever vinyl-edition you have, inevitably, as there is physical contact between the diamond stylus and the plastic groove (that's the word ...) the more you play it, the more wear is caused. I can hear, pretty soon, the difference between a unplayed record and one that's been through the process, say, 20 times. I don't really care about that, but what are your thoughts on this ?

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. In this particular case it is about the media since a lot of people are considering spending $150 on this, I wanted to try and give people an opinion on what you get and if its worth it both from a box set stand point as well as how it sounds - if that speaks to you. As I mention in the video - for me its about quantity - its about more Picassos on my wall even if they are copies because I do want to learn about the artists and the music. With that said -- 1. A lot has already been said about Miles and this particular session - from the people who were there not just some idiot (me) on YT. 2. YT sucks in that I can't play the music or even clips of it without getting demonetized or else I would DEF. play the tracks and talk about them way more. I think all people on YT prob. would as well. 3. If you DO want MORE about Miles, or at least a guy who played with him a lot - Dave Liebman I did an interview with him a while back for a company I work for and it was awesome. check it out if you can - th-cam.com/play/PLZQqNNHsg4fBoU5RMyGpDQVIgHoEKkqGn.html

    • @misterioustraveller149

      @@PiecesofVinyl Thanks for your answer ! Good interview with Dave Liebman, he's really articulate. I like his story on joining Elvin and Miles, as his experiences teaching jazz in China. The flute he plays ís probably from India. They play the transverse flute exclusively in classical Indian ragas, but the end-played flute (mostly 4 holes) is used in folk music in the Nepalese and Indian Himalayas. It is slowly disappearing but I saw and heard it played in rather remote valleys in the Kumaon and Annapurna regions. I understand your motives for this video, which are fine and considerate. But I would like to know your opinion on the damage done to the sound reproduction by playing the record. One audiophile told me that he didn't listen 20 times in a lifetime to an UHQR, which is fair enough: I have nèver listened to the vinyl in my copies of the KOB 50th and BB 40th boxed sets, only to the cd's. I mostly play the Complete Coltrane metal spine version. For some reason (unknown to me) I like the chronological playing order, which I do almost always. I understand the defining importance of sequencing for the more-than-the-sum wholeness (so to speak) of an album, but, hey, I'm only human ...

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misterioustraveller149 I have made this oath to myself - I will open and play the vinyl. I think I have one box set that I didn't open but probably will one day. First off, its about the music, and yes I can listen to digital but I like the experience of my records. Second, I have learned even with this UHQR that you NEED to open them....they might be damaged! What's the sense of sitting on a bad copy of a record? As for the degradation - its like my kids with their toys - or even me with mine when I was little - sure I could have saved them all and they would be worth a fortune today - but I also would have missed out on all the memories I had with them. Maybe another reason why vinyl is great - its fleeting! That said some of my BEST sounding LPS are OG pressings from the 60s and 70s and they sound amazing and they were probably played a million times. Vinyl is pretty resilient.

    Wow, as good as this is I think I'll have to stick with my 2010 Sony/Columbia copy and call it a day. I do want to say that some have compared this to the MoFi 33 1/3 album and there is no comparison. It isn't that MoFi used DSD as an intermediate step but rather the excessive EQ they applied which makes the bass needlessly boomy. On this 45 RPM version, the esteemed engineer involved said he applied very LITTLE EQ at all. As such, with it being so well made and being 45 RPM, it will likely be the LAST vinyl version of Kind of Blue anyone would ever need. Great review.

    Hello, could you tell what source was used for this 45RPM version? When AP released the 33 1/3 RPM version of UHQR, they used the metal master cut by Classic Records Bernie Grundman back in mid 1990s. He did use the original 3-track master tape directly down mixed to 2 tracks and cut the lacquer and created the metal. It was a live cut from 3-track master. That's what AP acquired when they bought Classic Records label and used to press 33 1/3 version.
    But what about this 45RPM? what's the source?

    • @PiecesofVinyl

    No offense, but you're reviewing a record that costs nearly as much as your stylus. I'd argue with your setup, its not worth it until you upgrade components... 2 of these records alone could get you the bronze, which is better than the blue in everything. A Nagaoka MP-150 would also be something in that range. To each their own I guess

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching - but - I will have to challenge you on that - just because the stylus or my setup doesn't cost that much - doesn't mean it doesn't sound good or can not reproduce good sounds - also - I have seen reviews that the Bronze is not that much of an improvement from the blue vs. the price difference - eventually I will probably get a black - but most likely just to make a video about it (tbh)! - Im really happy with my current setup between the Ortofon Blue and the Zen Phono Stage - its a really good combo and allows me to buy more vinyl! Also - the price of the vinyl could eventually out weigh an entire system in some cases. 20 years from now who knows how much these UHQR records could be worth. I have also considered the MP-150 - but only because people mentioned that is a little warmer then the ortofon - but again - Im buying too many box sets at the moment!

    @automatedelectronics6062 ปีที่แล้ว

    You do realize that whether it's the 45 rpm or 33 1/3 rpm versions, these were mastered by Bernie Grundman for Classic Records. The metal parts were made by RTI and first pressings were pressed by RTI while the AP UHQR used the same metal parts. Classic Records had it's proprietary vinyl that RTI pressed those records on. Now, typically when comparing the original RTI pressing to one later pressed by QRP, the RTI pressings are notably better. The AP releases were originally also pressed by RTI on premium vinyl in the beginning, then after Acoustic Sounds started up it's QRP pressing facility, they were noticeably not as good as the RTI-pressed versions. Not just for collectability's sake, but original Classic Records go for many times the value of a new AP re-pressing of the same records, using the CR/RTI original metal parts. The Same goes for the original RTI-pressed AP releases. Virtually every QRP-pressed record I have to exchange. Sometimes the replacement record is better, but not always. I had to exchange every UHQR album I have purchased from the first UHQR, Jimi Hendrix "Axis: Bold As Love" to the Miles Davis 33 1/3 rpm UHQR "Kind of Blue", the records on both these releases were virtually unplayable.
    Now, let's talk about the early Jimi Hendrix albums. To me, it seems like they were crudely recorded and remind me of the early Beatles stereo records. Because of sounding like a 2-track session master, the only way that you might hear certain instruments which you couldn't hear before is because of a change in the equalization curve. Record speed may not have anything to do with it, unless the grooves were oversaturated. In this case, the 45 rpm speed helps alot. I personally believe that the 45 rpm speed is better. Even with that, the 78 rpm speed is even better. There have been some stereo 78's in modern times and the sound quality just blows me away.

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. I didn’t know any of that. I can say I might have to send back disc 1 of this miles. 78 might be a little far for me since I Would need a different stylus…but cmon if they made them I’d probably get one!

Rhino put out atleast 4 boxed sets of 78's, and these were legitimate. All these modern reproduction 78's are made of vinyl and the grooves were cut 2 mil. A .7 or 1 mil stylus doesn't play so well as they ride too low in the grooves. A 3 mil stylus plays good enough, but for your modern magnetic cartridges, there are 2.5 and 2.7 mil styli available for many cartridges. These play the repro 78's very well. There is a small U.S. record label who is putting out new vinyl 78's of new recordings of small band type recordings, but they are $30. each. I just saw that VPI Industries has some for sale.
      There have been specialty vinyl 78's , mostly promotional, for years. One that I have has "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Another came with a promo album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Mr. Bojangles".
      There was also the Beach Boys 78 rpm set released for Record Store Day and has the songs "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes & Villains."
      The sound quality will really surprise you!
      Yeh, after I saw your video I ordered the Miles Davis UHQR 45 rpm set. I wasn't going to because I didn't want to take another chance and have to exchange records like I had to with the 33 1/3 rpm UHQR.

    Shipped from Acoustic Sounds, with no free shipping, and tax, comes close to $200...
    I own the single version, plus an original, plus a Legacy, plus the mofi, and I've listened to the album all my life.
    I have to draw the line somewhere, and $200 is it.
    I pass.

      Not sure what you mean? Are you saying this UHQR was made from the 1995 metal plate? I am not sure but I dont think that is correct. I thought they had the original master tapes again with this one. I could be wrong.

      @@Anthony-fz7uf right on. I looked it up and yes it uses the same metal but getting that Classic Records 1995 copy in mint would cost way more then this 45rpm. Why not get the new one?

      Good luck finding a true original. And one that is in as good as shape as this new one. The price will be about the same. Probably more for the original.

    Buy something new and stop re-purchasing the same freaking albums over and over and over again. We need to support "NEW" artists. Let's just drop the nostalgia crap.
