  • Hotly anticipated, let's review Analog Production's penultimate Kind of Blue release on 33.3 UHQR, hand pressed on custom Finebilt machines.
    Is this the final one? *it isn't, the 45 is still coming!
    The best selling jazz album of all times gets the final treatment it deserves with the best vinyl formula, a hand pressed UHQR edition. How does it compare to all other Miles Davis Kind of Blue reissues including everyone's reference the Mobile Fidelity 45 and Classic Records original? Let's find out!

    I bought this because I always wanted an audiophile version of this record but could not afford the Classic Records used prices. The quality of this record and the pressing is truly next level. What really blew me away is the air between the instruments and how individual they all sound in the mix. You can literally hear the ride cymbal reverberate and shimmer in between notes. I have played this for friends who are not fans of jazz and they were speechless. Thanks for the great review!

    Hi Danny - I've got that MoFi 45 "Kind of Blue". I do agree with your comment on the bass reproduction. In places the music does sound a bit thick, a quality I don't hear in my less expensive versions of this music, vinyl or SACD. Apart from that I think it sounds very good. I did order the AS UHQR which is still in backorder status. We'll see. Thanks for doing this comparison. You've an excellent ability to clearly explain your thoughts without unnecessary frills or distractions. Great job.

      @@SonicFlare Chad Kassem...I think you owe it to your customers to come up with an itemized list of costs associated with the manufacturing of these records and explain why they are so bloody expensive. You are exploiting the zeal of these collectors who think being a real record collector is owing every version of an LP that is available several times over. I and others want to see where you get the bottom line for these LPs, which is gouging at its worst.

And as far as a better version ever to come down the road, all I can say is how many Bernie Grundman's are in the future, a true treasure in the record industry. Hi Danny great information. I just got my UHQR yesterday and you, Chad and Michael are right buy now or cry later. I would love to hear you do a Jetro Tull Aqualung comparison, specifically the Steven Wilson version vs Chads and the Mofi vs all the others in the middle. I missed out on Chads JTA version, but my local Hi-Fi dealer had a store demo copy that he let me use and although it is very quiet, the Steven Wilson copy JTA, (which I own along with the Mofi and Original 2nd pressing Mono) is a better mix overall and it’s much better than the Mofi. You are right the bass is thicker on the Mofi.
    The Steven Wilson JTA copy is still available, but drying up at records stores. I bought the last copy at my local record store and their distributor can’t get anymore at the moment, but Amazon and EBay have plenty. Thank you for being honest about the 50th Anniversary KOB being noisy because I’m now kind of on the fence about buying it. The extras that make it interesting, especially the book and the outtakes and let’s face it, the overall collectibility in the end.

    Thanks for the in-depth review. I have some of the copies you'd mentioned the "Classic Records" 33.3 rpm version which I was never overly impressed with found it lacking in over all clarity. The Mo-Fi 45 rpm which I do like but the bass as mentioned is a bit "thick". I also have the Sony Legacy re-issue released in 2010 which I like and my original pressing. Then I found a recently released MONO 33.3 version low and behold it is by far, for me, the best sounding being the best pressing to date dead quiet and flat not overly bright with lots of detail. A round silver sticker indicates pressed at "RTI HQ 180 Premium Vinyl Pressing". *CAVEAT* do not buy the "MONO/STEREO Collectors Edition 2 lp Set" which is indicated at the top of the jacket it's a different animal all together. Both STEREO and MONO recorders were running during the K o B sessions. Do yourself a favour and check it out you won't be disappointed.

    P.S By the way, like you Danny, I too agree that the MOFI 45rpm possesses way, WAY too much bass response. Honestly, it kind of ruins it because there are some other aspects of its presentation that are admirable. Shame.
    Comment # 2: I must have a rare copy of the Sony/Columbia 50th Anniversary edition because mine really good and it is not noisy at all! It really sounds incredible and It is puzzling that you are so adversed to it.
    Comment#3: In my humble opinion the Classic Records 4 single-sided/45rpm LP edition betters the UHQR. It just feels like it is more ALIVE at least in my system and to these ears. What I will give the UHQR is that it is the best damn 33 1/3rpm copy you can buy.
    I think based on how amazing the 4 single-sided/45rpm Classic Records sounds like that the ultimate version will inevitably be Chad's next own 45rpm UHQR.
    My two cents...

    I've had my player copy for several weeks now. It was very staticky and had some pops. However, after several deep cleanings, it's more than acceptable now. You are right about how quiet the floor noise is, the music seems to emerge from a well of inky blackness. I find it a hair lean in bass and hope the 45 can punch things up a little from this but not as much as the mofi.

    I want to buy at the of this month. The only thing that have me worried about is that the vinyl inside moves and break part of the sleeve. Because it has happened with other records. When they don't put the vinyl outside of the sleeve it starts to to move while is with the delivery companies. I was thinking write to analogue productions in the moment I order it. Other pressings that are pretty silent in general are the japanese pressings. I owned some of them and usually they have nice quality sleeve for the price the sell. Cheap price, good sound, good pressing and beautiful cover. That's how I see japanese pressings. I love the pressings that pure pleasure records are doing also among others. Great video. Hey Danny is your Stoughton Tip On gatefold split on the inside of the spline? I noticed you didn't hold it open for long - I'm guessing not so not to highlight the split? I only ask as I own a copy of the Analogue Production - The Royal Ballet and that has a split now (it was a brand new copy ) after I opened it for the first time :-( I'm just curious if all Stoughton Tip On gatefolds suffer from this issue or whether mine (& yours) is a one off? I have a copy of KOB UHQR on order and just wondering if I should not open the gatefold or not. Normally items like this incorporate a small loop in the paper (that is not glued to the inner surface) to allow the thing to open without tearing/splitting.

    I have a Japanese 1968 Sony stereo (promo) edition, dead quiet, massive 3D soundstage. Vinyl was just made differently back then, especially the Japanese ones. I’m waiting to hear the 45rpm from Acoustic Sounds, but in my experience it’s hard for any new pressings to match the older ones when they were done properly. Of course, the remastering helps, but what’s there is simply what’s on the tape, you will only get less information each time it is copied with each generation. I’m intrigued if you could do a direct comparison with your first pressing and the latest UHQR version. As you have mentioned the condition of the original is around VG+, but our ears can excuse the pops and clicks. I’m really interested to hear the difference in terms of soundstage.

    Thanks for the great review! Unfortunately, I cannot say that my copy is flawless! It is literally full of pops and clicks, and I was very disappointed that exactly this UHQR was the worst of ALL the records I bought from Acoustic Sounds! The sound is definitely great, and better than any other copy I own, but getting such a noisy copy is simply unacceptable! And by the way, my copy's S/N is in the 2300's, so earlier than yours. Also the cover has a crack in the center (like your's) and on the spine as well. I think Chad should look into these issues, because as it is now, this is NOT the quality that we expected!

    Hey Danny, enjoyed the video. The UHQR and the old Classic 45/33's are basically from the same metal parts and same mastering, so what do you attribute to the greatly improved sound quality of the new UHQR?

    • @SonicFlare
      @SonicFlare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, they are ... there's 2 things responsible: 1. the Finebilt hand press fully tweaked and tuned... 2. the new clear vinyl formula... add those two together and you have massive improvement.

  • @martinmelucci4383
    @martinmelucci4383 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The MoFi is not just too much bass...it's also the sound of the bass, which is overripe and boomy, with a metallic top end to balance the bass, where the cymbals are more of the sound of striking the cymbal without enough of the shimmer, and loses the beautiful, shiny character this recording actually has. The live mix and mastering Bernie Grundman did is fabulous, and is essentially faultless sounding. It truly sounds "right". If you don't have that, whether the original release or the current one, and may not be able to spend for it, get the current hi res download or the old Sony SACD that Mark Wilder did...they are both excellent, as is the CD version released a I think a couple of years before the SACD (which is the same mix, mastered slightly differently aside from the format difference). The vintage copies have a certain je ne sais quoi that, on a nice copy, also sounds really nice in it's way.

    Hello Danny, is they reason they dont record the music all the way to the end of the vinyl is because the further into the record it becomes distorted?

    • @SonicFlare
      @SonicFlare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      absolutely - groove distortion rises exponentially the closer the cutter head is to the spindle; the angular velocity increases while the space to record signal to decreases. Vinyl is an imperfect medium....

    I love Chad’s enthusiasm. I have this release and I’ve read the comments of many others who also have it. The sound quality is not in question. It’s fantastic.
    If you have a dead silent copy, you’re pretty much the only one. This was pressed incredibly badly by all accounts. No. I will not be on board for the 45. I got a descent pressing of the 33 but most of my RSD 2021 haul was executed much better, at a fraction of the price.

    Wonder how my standard £28 pressing sounds in comparison, would I really notice a huge difference on my RP3 deck? I would love to be able to justify the spend on these audiophile pressings, it’s not about the money it’s about the perceived improvement in sound, is it demonstrably better, can I honestly say that I can hear ‘more’ sound or a ‘better’ sound, can I actually hear an improvement in the space around the musicians. In all honesty I very much doubt it, not because it isn’t there but because my old ears and that bit of tinnitus will preclude me hearing that improvement.
    So, for those of you with the great systems and excellent hearing go and enjoy these audiophile pressings, I am somewhat envious of you.

      Ah yes, the dreaded Tinnitus. Sorry Martin, I wish the medical field would have a solution... That said, it is really remarkable how adaptable our ears/brain integration is that even with this issue you can still enjoy music. That said, I really have no idea if you would hear a difference or not, I guess it all depends on how advanced your Tinnitus is. Cheers for tuning in and watching Martin!

The likes of Music Matters, many of (their own) AP releases, some of the new A.S. series. Even some of the Speakers Corner releases, some SAM LPs. Again, I'm framing the overall quality. This new one is great but I don’t think this new vinyl formula sounds as good as the previous UHQRs. Mine is quiet but nowhere as quiet as my MMJ,Tone Poets or even Sam Record LPs. Also feel the actual box is a huge waste of space. I’d prefer just the gatefold and price them around $60-70. 😎. The MoFi is actually quieter than the new UHQR but yes a bit bass heavy. Also box numbers have no correlation to order of pressing

      well, I guess it depends what you mean... a proper vinyl reissue is done directly off the master tape so it's really a single generation away... not saying CDs or hi-res can't be made the same way, they just aren't in reality... now from a strictly technical perspective, of course digital is certainly far more precise than vinyl could ever be.

    Thanks for your review, it was very exciting to hear your opinion on the different pressings. I don't have the record myself yet and to be honest I'm sceptical. What I don't like at all about the hype around this release is the fact that the record is announced in a big way with a lot of hoopla and discussions and in the end the record is only sent out in very small quantities on the release date, and as it seems to me mainly to people who review the record. Makes sense for marketing ;-) But why give a release date when the record hasn't even been pressed yet or can't be delivered? I'm frustrated by now. I understand the excuse that it takes a long time, but: produce the stuff and then announce it when it's ready! The whole packaging with these puny inlays is not needed by anyone either: it doesn't justify the price of 100 dollars in any way.
    I don't want to come across as too niggly here, but as the comments show, some of the copies are not at all "perfect" and neither is the cover. However, for $100 it has to be perfect. Guys, I have to return records so often nowadays because of pressing faults, dished, warped, scratched LPs etc. It is so time-consuming to return the record, as there is no distribution in Europe... Well, maybe I should be a bit more optimistic about it, but I just got a lot of junk as far as new pressings are concerned.
