@@mendelpearl8066 Definitely better than a TH-cam version I made for myself by uploading a 192/24 file bought from Qobuz. Theoretically both should have been beaten back down to cd quality at the very best, but there you go.
I'm a born skeptic, and still hold a lot of hi-fi verbiage up to the BS detector--but the first time I sat down in front of my wealthy friend's exotic hi-fi, I was totally floored. Underture from The Who's Tommy came to life in the room. Despite my attitude, I sensed the presence of the instruments and voices in front of me. I didn't hear the equipment. I may still respond to esoteric hi-fi jargon with a touch of snark, but I am a believer. Having said that, I also accept that I am socioeconomically situated to be listening to lo-fi for the remainder of my days. Such is life. I bet this Dan recording sounds so friggin amazing.
When I was shopping for hi-fi the dealer had 7 rooms set up. He said most people couldn't hear the difference past the 5th room. Unfortunately, it was night and day for me... I could discern every detail. Also unfortunate, was that I wound up spending $15k on my home theater, but my wife thinks it was only half of that 😞 I wound up with Parasound, Rotel, Paradigm, Amphion, Arcam and SVS, and still love it all 10 years later.

But you’re listening to a digital file that Michael has recorded. The irony of so many “audiophiles” who would normally baulk at anything digital saying how good it sounds is priceless.
I love how you said that vinyl will last virtually forever if you take care of your records. It seems obvious, but many people don't know or understand this. The record sounds amazing; even through TH-cam! Thank you, Michael.
True. I acquired some 50-60 year old albums so well preserved. One of them is a Brazilian samba album recorded in 1968 on stereo, which was very rare at the time here in Brasil. It sounds amazingly good regarding the technology and lack of resources of the time.
Yes mazzy. I have 1949 10" and 12" and they sound just fine. Labels are attached with 10k psi and won't ever come off. Properly stored I think pvc will last 200+ years with ease.
I have cds that are twenty years old, made by legitimate record labels, that don't play anymore; they skip. You can't even buy a high quality cd player these days for less than a grand--and they still sound inferior to vinyl. Why did we ever fall for the cd scam? What a waste of money.
Sure, this is TH-cam, but that sound through my headphones is incredible. It sounds balanced, clear and dynamic. I can only imagine what it sounds like in person.
Loved this presentation! As the lead singer for a current international recording group, I had the honor and privilege of meeting Toni Wine, one of the original Babylon sisters on that recording. She co-wrote Candida for my friend Tony Orlando. She had some great back stories about the making of that song. Nice demonstration Michael. Thank you for letting us listen and see that you DO NOT have to spend 370k on a turntable (I realize TH-cam does not have all the detail, but close). However, I have a 1982 JVC QL-Y55F turntable with a far more sophisticated electro-servo tonearm that even dampens resonances, an Audio-Technica VM760SLC Phono Cartridge, which plays this record in identical fashion and with great sound connected to my Technics SU-R1000 fully digital amp. But I do understand where you are coming from. Promoting Vinyl this way and letting other people enjoy the video. And to be honest I did enjoy it myself. Funny and entertaining. And that at the end of the day is most important here. Keep entertaining us Mr. Fremer!
The record is at 45 rpm, is 12" in diameter and very wisely, the actual grooves cover only roughly half of the area from the outer edge. The company realises that grooves near the label simply cannot deliver the fidelity because of loss of linear speed; "compression". Pressings like this solve the problem. I would absolutely love to hear this album. Thanks for posting and cheers from Sunny Australia!.
Even with my trashed ears I hear detail I don't remember from my original vinyl, CD's, 1/4" tape@7.5 ips, etc. Gobsmacked. Indeed, this is why we work....

Everyone has a hobby or passion, and one person will put into it more or less than the other - it's entirely an individual thing and not a measuring stick to live by. That was a great experience even if coming through TH-cam.

What this video proves more than anything else is that TH-cam audio is very capable and that lossy compression, when applied not too harshly, doesn't degrade the sound, contrary to audiophile beliefs. I was impressed by the sound quality, but I realise that a large part of that is not due to my system but due to the fact that this recording didn't suffer from the "loudness war" dynamics compression. For me that's what really kills the sound quality of music.
Sounds fantastic. Vocal tone, sound of the vocal mics, sonic choices for each channel in the 24 track mix, all are obvious even after many digital steps and compressions to YT.

What I love the most about this record is how it says goodbye to the 70s and also Steely Dan. I could listen to the outro of Third World Man for days. Amazing music.
Michael you are a very excellent reviewer. I have listened to you for several years thanks for the honesty and frankness Now send me that turntable lol!
This is the sound my dad strove for years. He spent a small fortune on “hi-fi” equipment…Quad, JBL, Shure… and never achieved what he was looking for. Even over TH-cam I can tell the difference. Amazing.
So I did a quick comparison from apple iTunes which I know is a compressed file and the difference is so much better coming from your turntable wow the detail the punch musicality is truly amazing, thanks for the upload
The nearest the majority of music fans will get to this pressing or the turntable! Listening to vinyl sure is an expensive hobby these days. Thanks for sharing, extremely impressive 🎶🎶👍
Michael, it sounded awesome! Clear, smooth, no resonances anywhere. And I'm listening over a really small tabletop system hooked directly up to this laptop. Greetings from Italy.
That sounds amazing even on phone- when my copy comes in, I have a bottle of Kirschwasser I’m gonna crack open while listening 😎 thanks for sharing that amazing TT !
Most people have never heard quality audio. Most of us old golden ears have a friend or two who put more into their analog stereo systems then they did their cars. Listen to this turntable in the right room, and the correct seating position, with hand built equipment with custom hand built components, and preamps and you will have an eargasm! Some of the big recording studios have digital systems in the control rooms that are almost as good. The smoothness and dimensional aspects of these systems are amazing and worth listening to. High sampling rates and A/D converters, and a million dollars in equipment will get you there.
Probably not that many since Gaucho was released in 1980. Sorry, could not resist ;) Then again it could be argued that 1980 is the last year of the seventies.
Wow. That is amazing. I had a pair of the Klipsch at15 I think. Had the big horn. This would would so nice on those. Had to sell. Moved to much. They were huge.
The UHQR series is astounding. I have Aja and it is the best sounding record I own- or never owned. Gaucho is gonna make an appearance, too! Thanks for this video, very enjoyable style and format.
Sounds better than the streaming version at 96/24 his res even on TH-cam. The mastering is spectacular because the original intent is present in what was played. Naeeeeeeeece!!!
Beautiful presentation, one of my favorite albums! Love that they give their releases so much love. What a blessing to listen to that classic on THAT system 😁 I wanna hear Gaucho coming out of chronosonics! 😫
I can't believe what I am hearing. Gaucho has been one of my top three favorite albums of all time since I bought it on vinyl shortly after it first came out in 1980. I am using the same computer, same speakers, not at all high-end gear, to compare this TH-cam sound with 256 kbps MP3 sound on Windows Media Player that I ripped from my CD, going backwards and forwards between the two, and the sound of that UHQR equipment is vastly better even after being processed through the TH-cam algorithms. It's more dynamic, sounds less compressed, it has brighter but above all much clearer and purer treble, it sparkles. Wow. I would not have believed that the quality of that sound reproduction would survive TH-cam's processing and that I could hear a difference on my very average equipment, but there was a huge difference. Quite an eye-opener. Or ear-opener, even 😁
That is because you are hearing a different mastering. The reason it survives even "through" youtube as you put it, is simple. You are also hearing differences in tonality between the Cart he is using and so on. The REAL test would be to play the Original vinyl of this and then this version. To see what changed mastering wise!
@@kevintomb Yes, of course, good point, simply remastering with changes in EQ will make a huge difference to the sound. But I'm still surprised at some of the nuances that emerge from within the sound of the Fender Rhodes and the female vocals, for example, in the version on TH-cam. I'm an acoustic guitar player and there are nuances in the sound of an excellent acoustic guitar that are not there in mediocre ones or even in pretty good ones. I think that it is a question of the harmonic components within a note, but although I can hear them I can't really give a scientifically valid explanation of what makes the live audio from an excellent guitar sound noticeably better than the live audio from a pretty good one. Perhaps if someone could donate some hideously expensive high-end equipment to me as well as the Analogue Productions 45 rpm pressing (don't worry about the original 33 rpm album, I already have that) I could make a better comparison... 😜
I'm not convinced...any chance of a complete album play through just to sway the doubters like me!! Seriously...who would have thought TH-cam could bring this audiophile experience to the masses? Thank you..
Even after it's been through TH-cam's atrocious audio digital processing ? This has been processed with image widening software to enhance the width of the stereo image, NOT something Elliot Scheiner, Bill Schnee or Bob Ludwig would have done !
@@headforthetropics probably yes. I'm still a regular vinyl listener with an extensive collection and decent (Luxman, good quality but not esoteric) playback equipment. Could you explain how all the apparent benefits of vinyl reproduction (no low pass filter at 20kHz etc.) could possibly survive the butchery of You Tube's dreadful audio conversion and yet apparently still sound so impressive ? I strongly suspect that Bob Ludwig's original mastered recording (that Becker & Fagan approved) has been further enhanced using image widening software to sound like this.
@@redtapemusicfound the guy who uses logic. The 24/96 digital file probably came from this same tape. Why would pressing it to an LP and putting it through TH-cam make it sound better than 24/96 mastered from the same source?!
I wonder if there is something wrong with the setup. Immediately when the needle is lowered there is a very audible noise/hum that you can occasionally hear even when the music is playing. One would not expect to hear it with 370K turntable. Other than that this sounds relatively ok.
I listened to this and yes I understand it’s recorded on TH-cam but if 370k supposed to buy you the ultimate listening experience than I will happily stick to my 10k 5.1 system playing Babylon Sisters on SACD multichannel, I was hearing details here that I cannot hear or they are not as clear on this turntable
I use Dynaudio Bm5 studio monitors as my computer monitor speakers, so hearing this through them is pretty much heaven. I feel like I'm in the studio as it's being recorded and mixed. Gaucho was already the best album I've ever heard recorded ( even more so than Aja). I would love to hear this whole album exactly like this. An amazing experience.
The pedigree of that awesome turntable lets the quality of that pressing really shine through, the cymbals, sax, vocals were all so smooth without glossing over the dynamics of this great track 👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing this clip Michael. On your system even here on YT the clarity and quality of the UHQR is stellar. The mid-range is warm smooth as butter while the highs shimmer. I love being able to pick out the individual backup vocalists. This pressing is a homerun. I received mine and was knocked out on my system but your demo here knocks me out. Thanks again.
Very nice Michael, thank you for sharing. I have one ordered, so looking forward to it. I actually didn’t have a copy of this on record so I won’t be able to compare it; it certainly sounds nice here 🙂

Great audition! YES! I really think the better the playback hardware the more revealing it will be. Depending if your comparing the same recordings played back on the same hardware as well. Plus, depending if you have a trained ear as well. Thank you for sharing Mr. Fremer! Always grateful for what you share! LEGEND!🙂
OMG MR.FREMER THAT IS SOOO COOL !! 😮😮My sister turned me onto Steey Dan when i was young and i bless that experience. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS FOR US ❤
I have listened to this song and subsequent live versions a thousand times before. This is truly remarkable.
It's going back to the U.K. on Friday....
@@trackingangle929and thanks but no thanks david cameron.
Wow, that sounds really nice. Probably some of the best sound I've heard on TH-cam. Must sound great in person!
This is a digital file on youtube. Go figure.
Thanks for uploading this. Incredible track and amazing turntable.
That app control on the table is awesome!
One critic called "Gaucho" "what passes for jazz in Holiday Inn lounges".
Can’t tell you how many times this record was listened to , by me, in the 70’s. A favorite.
Probably not that many since Gaucho was released in 1980. Sorry, could not resist ;) Then again it could be argued that 1980 is the last year of the seventies.
Hi Michael, I hope you're well.
Sounds Amazing!
I felt like I was invited to the final mix at the recording studio.
I agree with your comments Michael. Silky is how I felt listening to this. Thank you!
Awesome sound! Thank you very much! More please when you get some time!
Sounds awesome, thank you so much for doing this
In your humble opinion it's the definitive version of the record. My definitive version is the one I bought when I was 16 years old.
That's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I have audioengine speakers on my PC, and this sounds amazing. I can only imagine what it sounds like on your end. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful presentation, one of my favorite albums! Love that they give their releases so much love. What a blessing to listen to that classic on THAT system 😁 I wanna hear Gaucho coming out of chronosonics! 😫
Even through TH-cam, you can tell how good this sounds!
Or ear-opener, even 😁
You should hear it “live”!
Thank you..
All I can say is WOW! You made my $150 headphones (thru TH-cam) sound like $370K!!
Even thru TH-cam, Donald’s voice sounds clearer, and you were right, the bass is more forceful. Altogether a great sound. Thanks Mikey.
I cannot believe how good that sounds, I can only imagine what that sounds like in the room
Even after it's been through TH-cam's atrocious audio digital processing ? This has been processed with image widening software to enhance the width of the stereo image, NOT something Elliot Scheiner, Bill Schnee or Bob Ludwig would have done !
@@redtapemusic wow. THAT was polite.
sarcasm?
Holy Moly !!!! 😮. This particular track on this particular turntable played back on my system sounds unbelievably incredible 🎉🎉🎉!!! WOW 🤩
Sounds really great and expressive. Thank you, Michael.
I wonder if there is something wrong with the setup. Immediately when the needle is lowered there is a very audible noise/hum that you can occasionally hear even when the music is playing. One would not expect to hear it with 370K turntable. Other than that this sounds relatively ok.
Sounded great I am a big Gaucho fan, well written good listen
GEEEEEZ! Porcaro is da epitome of perfection punch and subtle nuance dynamics and leads the energy like driving the song like a bus steady as she goes
Yes Pocaro was wonderful, as are Steve Gadd and Marotta on this album, but this is Bernard Purdie on this cut with his signature shuffle cheers !
Just discovered your channel, thanks for the review! 🙏
Amazing sound. The clearest I’ve ever heard it
The pedigree of that awesome turntable lets the quality of that pressing really shine through, the cymbals, sax, vocals were all so smooth without glossing over the dynamics of this great track 👍👍👍
I actually didn’t have a copy of this on record so I won’t be able to compare it; it certainly sounds nice here 🙂
Amazing, can hear the quality through my samsung s 10 tablet! Can't imagine how good in the room.
i pumped this through to my hi-fi speakers - it sounds AMAZING.
