I regret not neutering, vaccinating and transitioning this stray ginger male cat into an indoor only cat so much. He was the sweetest cat I've ever seen, so gentle, even with other cats. He once brought in this momma cat and her kittens to our place, and we fed the entire family for a while. He shortly passed away of feline parvo and there was nothing the vets could do. I believe that there are a lot of things people don't know about the variations that male cats exhibit in parenting their kittens. He was such a sweetheart.
Thank you for not talking down to cat owners who have concerns about fixing their cats. So many people are hostile when they hear any reservations about fixing. Taking a non-judgmental approach helps so much in making the decision. As an aside: my personal worry of neutering springs from a death of a kitten my parents had. He contracted a urinary tract infection from the neuter and not long after suffered a prolapse. His health wasn't looking good and he had to be put to sleep. I'm not sure the prolapse had anything to do with the neuter, but the infection sure did. It just all took too much out of the kitten. I'll look into trustworthy vets in my area for my own cat now that I know what to look for.
My 7-month-old cat was neutered two weeks ago as advised by our veterinarian. I am relieved that the incision has fully healed now. His appetite also went back a few hours after the surgery.
I had my kitten spayed when she was only little over two months old . She kept growing and developing well. She's a smart active cat with no health issues.
A stray kitten found my family. He never sprayed. He never smelled bad . He loves the outdoors. We live in the country. We neutered him at 6 months I was really worried but he came through like a champ. I love him so much
Hi, Thanks for sharing. Did you find any behavioral change in your cat after neutralization? Any sign of depression (not being happy and energetic like before) or laziness?
@@robindickman4419 I'm glad to hear that! I was in a dilemma about whether I should do the same for my kitten, but after watching this video and hearing about your experience, I feel more confident now.
My dear Bella was spayed at 1 year old, and I spared no expense for her comfort and surgery. My vet is top notch, her scar was about 3/4 “ with 3 melt away stitches. She went through one heat that was pretty much unbearable with the crying and rutting behaviors. I took her home the next day, she needed no extra pain control or need to wear a cone. She needed a couple of days of rest before commencing her normal routine and came through very well and she is 3 now and doing wonderfully. She is a much better and healthier indoor solo cat these days.
I now have a 5 mo old kitten as a companion for Bella… her spay is scheduled for Jan 26. I cannot speak highly enough about the many benefits of having your animals fixed. It makes them so much healthier and happier in their lives in general!
I just had Jasmine spayed a day ago. She’s done nothing but lay around, growl at us, she will not eat, drink. I already had her back to vet because she needed fluids, antibiotics.and nausea meds. I buried a cat after he was neutered so I am scared.
Thank you for sharing your story this reassures me since I've just taken my Ayana to the vet to get her spayed and I'm currently having doubts about the decision. But knowing that she will hopefully be happier afterwards makes me happy ❤
Just had my boy neutered today. He's still a little stoned but he's eating and drinking and moving about rather well. Best choice ever. He will be a happier cat and healthier.
Felines need to be sterilized and that is how you control overpopulation. However neutering tomcats is unnecessary and nothing more than mutilation . You cannot just chop off someones balls without their consent, for your own vanity, not to mention why vets recommend it is just pure profit related. Your tomcat can still get every deadly disease, if you actually understood or cared or respected that cat you would have let it be and instead vaccinate the animal against the deadly diseases. A cat is not a house decoration. Not all tomcats stink and they are primarily in the garden, no problem for them spraying there. You just cut out a major part of this cats life that would have made it full, without it's consent, totally unnecessarily. This goes beyond sexual function, castration impact an animal in many other aspects negatively and again unnecessarily. I wish that vets stop manipulating people for profit.
@@audrey-ji2qq since you two are close and you are his family he leans on you completely, he is an indoor cat. Also this is your experience, often times the cat has permanent visible frustration. In the case of semi feral cats or cats that were mostly outdoors this is a horrid thing to go through that will permanently cripple them in their natural instincts behaviour and routine, leaving them more vulnerable if they can only rely on themselves. Also they are very aware that they have been castrated so are other tomcats, this is often shamed.
@@jodi2867 cats don't have the same emotions humans have so please don't anthromorphize (?spelling) them. They don't shame others cats for being neutered. Neutered Tom cats simply aren't going to be fighting with other Tom's. Cats are natural predators so if they live outdoors, they roam as they have to hunt. If they are an indoor/outdoor cats when they go outside they will roam for the same reason. If you have never experienced having a female cat go into a heat cycle or a Tom cat get into fights in your household, you should at least once. You will change your mind fairly quickly about spaying/neutering them. The expense is worth it. The vets at the clinic i go to will at the earliest neuter/spay when a kitten is 5 months old since they are sexually mature at 6 months.
@@amyrussell860 Amy you have no idea who you are arguing with!? Are you a doctor, a scientist? Are you someone who researches animal behaviour and psychology? I bet you could not even solve a math problem from 5th grade, therefore I should label you as a lesser being compared to me and rightfully mutilate you for my own comfort. Damn you are not only ignorant and vain but proud of it. Cats experience the same emotions as humans, and this has been documented many many times, they are fully conscious. Spaying a female is not the same as neutering a male. And castration in particular is useless and outdated evil mutilation in the name of the owners vanity. The facts are that it cannot tacle the population overgrowth problem since, it simply does not work like that, the females are the vehicle and source of that, always will be males who are going to get the unsapyed females pregnant even on a street/block level, as long as there are unsprayed females roaming around. Spaying is absolutely reasonable and just beneficial, the females are thankful for the process and there are no "side effects".However castration is useless and does not tackle anything in reality other than mutilating and making your animal sick mentally and physically. Having no testicles puts one up for poor mental and physical health, period. And this is the case, end of story. Almost all notoriously obese cats are castrated males, no coincidence. There is enormous amount of evidence pointing from owners that the castrated animals mental health becomes a very big problem. I myself conduct research on the material. The animal is 100% aware of it being mutilated this is also proven, and it has to live with the agony for the rest of it's life, also they are shamed. Cats fight irregardless their gender. For example spayed females will keep fighting iregardless. Fightings are harmless mostly, usually just noisy, AS LONG AS THE CAT IS VACCINATED IT IS OKAY. Tomcats need to be vaccinated. Vaccinations eliminate the chance or getting sick from contagious deadly diseases. CASTRATION DOES NOT, your castrated cat can still get these sicknesses. I bet you did not know this one either. Also cats regardless or their gender spray not every one and this issue is tackled by training and not castration. A cat should spend a reasonable amount of time outdoors every day anyways. A cat is not a house decoration. A cat is independent. A cat does not want you to adopt it to be your vanity deco, it is your desire to do so. So instead of treating a living being that experiences the same emotions and is conscious as a toy give it the respect you give yourself. It is useless, evil, vain does not tackle the real issues. Vaccinate it, respect it, communicate with it, build trust and healthy bond and let it be. Never ever castrate, ever.
I am really glad I found you. There are a lot of articles online that has misleading information regarding the correct time to spay/neuter a cat. Your information seems highly logical and without bullsh*t, which I appreciate, so thank you!
Thank you for this transparent video about spaying and neutering. Looking back, I wish I had been more diligent in vetting the vets who performed surgeries for two cats that were born in my family's backyard. We brought them to a feral cat clinic to get them neutered/spayed, and unfortunately since then, they've each regularly had urinary tract infections every few months, particularly when it seems to be mating season (even after bringing them indoors). Other cats that we've brought to a regular vet's office for the surgery haven't had similar problems, so we figure it must have been the feral clinic doing a less-than-stellar job.
I don’t know how I got this lucky, but I got my cat spayed when she was 8 months , it only took me so long to take her because I was low on money. But when I had enough I took her to get spayed, the vets were very surprised she had never had a heat, but she got her surgery two months ago and she still acts like her sweet cuddly self. Spaying is definitely the best thing I could have done for her.
I'm thinking about getting my cats neutred, they are siblings and both of them are 7 months old and I have tight budget. idk what to do I don't want them to breed.
@@harisatayyaba7730 my advice is look for a vet that is based purely or mostly around big farm animals. I took her to a farm vet and the hill for the surgery came out to be 100 and that was with giving her the strongest pain meds that would last her two days and her surgery. Small local vets are some of the best just be sure to check their ratings and reviews
I just had my two seven years old kittens neutered 4 days ago. It went so well. They seem everything is normal already. Thank you Dr. Sarah: your videos have helped me going through lots of things--since I am a new kitten mom❤❤
Trying to get as much information as possible, so thank you for this video. My friend's foster kitten died during his neuter procedure, and I have a 5-month-old sweet girl who's getting the operation next month, so I'm more scared than I should be. But hearing from a caring vet helps me prepare. ❤
I rescue cats and have cared for over 50 cats in my time. I have spayed or neutered multiple cats and have lost one cat under anaesthetic when having surgery. I truly understand your anxiety as the cat I lost was very special to me and I will never forget the pain I felt for him. But believe me, an unfixed cat is impossible to live with and the benefits of having your cat fixed far outweighs the cons. Be brave and do the best thing for your cat. Have your cat fixed. ❤️
@@MirageandReality yes, they did all the appropriate tests beforehand. When he was neutered the vet said he was very slow to recover from the anaesthesia. A year later he was is excellent health apart from entropic which he required surgery for. I took him to a specialist hospital in the states for the surgery and they couldn’t wake him afterwards. When he did come round, he took several seizures, they had to resuscitate him twice, but then he died the following day. It was 10 years ago on my birthday and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. RIP my little Black Angus. Xxx
I had a male cat I discovered living in my shed ,I use too leave door ajar and held in place with two. Bricks for any cats left out all night(uk ,lot of folks thinks it’s ok to leave them out all year whatever the weather). He must have been owned. At some point as he was neutered . He was eating seed the birds had spilled of off the table ,and looked. Pretty thin,so I started feeding him. Put up notes ,took him to vet to check for a microchip. No chip. Eventually a guy came round and said the folks who owned him moved and left him behind 😢 So picked him up and and took him indoors . Massive cat . Only thing ever took to killinghekilled was rats, didn’t eat them just killed them Ended up calling him shadow, clouded tabby so hard to see him under the tree shadows. He use to consistently spray up many sections of the wooden fence . He was a big love bug and even let babies and toddlers hug him in their rather unconventional way. Not a bad bone in his body ,unless you where a rat . Ed
Great story! I have that same color female. They really are like a shadow! I ended up naming her 'Misty' because she reminds of a grey, misty day. She is a treasure, but a real handful. She was spayed this morning so it's been an experience since she got home. It's a wonder her incision is still closed! She was wobbly, but it didn't slow her down a bit. I hope tomorrow that she's back to herself. I take it that Shadow isn't here anymore. 😿
I love this story so much!!! Whoever left that guy behind are Monsters!!! My kitty was just gone over night and I was wide awake at 5am waiting for the vet to open. I can't imagine leaving mine behind. I'm so glad you took him in. God bless you. Mine have really made my mental health better. I didn't realize how much them being here has helped my depression since my divorce. They really are special little critters.
My cat got neutered at the age of 9 months... sings after surgery 1. He spray in his litter box. 2. Didn't get weight 3. Showing more love. One side effect .. sleep less.
I had my boy neutered when he was 4 months old and my girl was spayed at 4 months. For some reason I got worried that night after her surgery and slept all night next to her in case something happened, of course she was fine and my husband laughed at me for sleeping with the cat
omg do u not normally sleep with the cat i refused to sleep in my room the night my cat had surgery cuz ive nvr slept in this room without her 😭 shes 5 days into healing n cuddled up next to me even now
@@R-cakes yess she did the recovery was rough bcs even tho i had her locked in my room shes super active n would throw herself on stuff n try to climb and there was a ton of crying and attempts to take off her cone. she’d hide n start licking her stitches when i took her cone off for eating so i ended up leaving it on full time. she did get a slight infection on the inside of her stitches due to all the movement but it cleared up super fast sith antibiotics. she was also very sweet about letting me clean her stitches throughout (though it was a two man job). its been 3 months now n shes super healthy and has gotten way way sweeter she even lets me hug her now
Can you imagine how much time you have saved other vets by giving the information to all here, as opposed to taking up a vet's clinic time for an individual lesson. This is a great way to use the internet 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks alooot am about to go spay my cat tomorrow and i had tears in my eyes worried sick if am doing the right thing or not….but this video helped …thanks alot
We are having our 3 kittens spayed/neutered this Thursday, they are approximately 9 months. 2 males, 1 female (siblings) strays we recused. Thanks for all the great information.
Goof information to know. I foster kittens for my local humane society and they do spay/neuter at 8 weeks and 2 pounds. Probably healthier to wait a little later but we are inundated with kittens every year and they have a policy to have them fixed prior to adoption so waiting later isn’t practical in busy shelters. Thank you for promoting spay neuter to help prevent the overpopulation problem.
Thank you Doctor! My cat will undergo spay surgery today. She is now 6 months and half. I was so worried😢 I'm glad I saw your video on youtube. I learn a lot ❤
@Shaima-fe7qj Not at all. I now have 4 of them. 1 male, and 3 females, all spayed. No more annoying moanings or shaking their butts in front of my male cat. They are much much more happier! Why?

I have 2 kittens 8 weeks old and I am already dreading the idea of taking them to get spay/neuter. Thank you Dr. for the information! I will wait until is the right time.
Thanks Dr. Sarah Wooten, for explaining and covering all my concerns about spaying my 7 months old kitty. I had another cat who lived 19yrs but the surgery is still making me nervous since the kitten is pretty active.
I had my boys neutered. It was a bit unnerving because due to pandemic, I had to hand them off from my car, then just came and picked them up. I didn’t have the luxury of vet choices, so I feel lucky vet we have is good and they did fine. I got my kitties from one of my students with a cat, he thought it would be fun for her to have kittens, so she roamed around outdoors not spayed. 😒 I helped him find low cost spaying, so she doesn’t have another litter.
@@maitreyik.r.4461 when you steal hormones from an animal it hurts it and causes underdevelopment. If you are spaying/neudering your animal you are an abuser.
I'm a dog owner, but thanks for the very detailed and nuanced information. Some vets treat clients like they're stupid or have no business being properly informed about their pets' health. The idea of informed consent (for humans, at least) has been ignored with the events of recent years, so this video is much appreciated!
And then they turn around and charge a fortune. I realized a long time ago that I should've been a vet instead of a nurse practitioner after seeing how much they charge knowing that people will rarely walk away from their pets.
I know this is an older video but as a first time cat owner, it was incredibly helpful! I felt bad at first when I saw how much my 6 month old feral rescue tabby had the cone but we are 10 days post surgery and while I'm leaving the cone on for four more days because he still seems to want to lick, he is doing great! Is it okay at 14 days to do a once in a lifetime post surgery bath? I don't plan to bathe my cats on the regular but he's a long hair and while I've been using huggies wipes to just clean the upper back of his hind legs, he's still got some yucky around his incision. I've been a dog person my entire life but I can say that I am so content with venturing into the kitty cat world. I love both of my orange tabby rescues so much! ❤
I have been a subscriber ever since I adopted Pewter, and All About Cats has been a great resource, especially for their reviews, but the channel has really gone top level with the inclusion of Dr. Wooten! Keep up the great content!
Thank you Dr. Sarah Wooten for your concern for felines. My previous comments were about the vet before you. She talked about her rottweiler & Lenny Loyn Cloth.
Dr Karen Becker said that the early spaying and neutering health issues later on tend to be for dogs but for now, not so much for cats. That being said, I prefer my cats to be spayed when they are at least 6 months old or older. I don't agree with spaying cats too early.
Dr Wooten, excellent video! We just had our two male kittens neutered yesterday and were told to keep them separated. They can see each other through a glass door but cry all the time. They like to rough house with each other, so I understand the need to keep them separate. For how long do we keep them apart? Any suggestions on how to reduce the crying? It is pitiful! TYIA. 🥰
Doctor, your advice is very solid for a cat owner. In an ideal world (and one day maybe we'll get there) 6-7 months to S/N rescue cats, and TNVR (which I have done) is just not feasible. Due to overcrowding in shelters, rescues are pulling kittens and getting them S/N at 3lbs or even at 2 lbs. Also, if we are to have any hope at all to curb "community cat" (i.e. Feral) cat populations it is also necessary to S/N at very young ages. Siamese, in particular can mature quicker than other breeds or DSHs. They mature at 5 months, even at 4 months rather than the typical 6-7 months. I sincerely wish that we didn't have to put the baby cats through surgery so young, but it is the only way to try to control the situation. It is a very fortunate cat that has found a home that is able to be S/N at the 6-7 month mark. Please, everyone: change the world and SPAY and NEUTER to end this cycle of suffering.
Thank you very much for this very informative video, my 1st time being a cat mom and I am having a 2nd thoughts of having my baby to be neutered, turning 6 months and sexually been active last month
I have always heard that it wasn't good to have a cat spayed or neutered before he or she was at least 6 months old. About 20 years ago, I "inherited" 4 kittens from a friend who had a "population explosion". This happened at a time when it was fashionable to have a kitten neutered at 10 weeks of age or younger. I had to be very assertive when explaining to my vet that I did not want my kittens neutered until they were sexually mature. I just didn't think that having a baby spayed or neutered was a good idea. As it turns out, Dr Wooten and I agree.
My cat is almost 8 months old (not sure he is a rescued feral cat) His surgery is in 2 days 🥲 I'm alittle stressed but I hope his surgery will go well Thank you for the informative video ❤️🩹
@@buttyz9913 he is fine and as energetic as he used to be ✨️ (he is a hyperactive cat) The first day was hard but we pulled through, he was sleeping mostly and I stayed by his side the whole day The next day he started eating and was running and jumping as if nothing happened! To whomever might read THIS and have an unspayed female cat... mine was also. Few days ago I realized she looked lethargic not eating ( I have several kitties at home so i may have missed these signs a day late or so... !) ... Long story short it WAS pyometra. She's 2 years old this month. Today is 1-day post surgery... I'd never ever, heard of THIS. But was caught in time and she s looking a bit grumpy n a bit annoyed at me BUT she should make a full recovery thanks to God 💚💙💗💛💜.... yes I waited cause I wanted her to finish growing into adulthood and not interfere with her endocrine system and wanted her natural hormones to flow freely etc .... but i could've spayed her at about 1 year old and avoided this scare.... I'm still a little concerned but very very hopeful she'll be ok .... but, PYOMETRA .... can indeed occur in a young kitty. Doc said she s had a few cases... and a couple were less than a year old. Just sharing. Can happen to dogs ... or your kitties. Scary. Look it up.
Do you really have people saying their cat will be upset because they never had kittens? I'm sorry, that sounds like something a comedian would say! I've noticed a real change in my area since I was a kid regarding stray cats - you'd see them regularly but these days, it's very rare. As desexing cats has become more common, it's a little harder to come across a cat when you want to adopt, as I found recently through personal experience, and it's a bit more expensive, but the positive changes have, in my opinion, been worth it.
I think it’s inhumane to NOT spay or neuter animals you don’t intend to breed. “Intact” animals are in constant turmoil due to hormones and instincts ingrained over thousands of years. It can be hard for a pet owner to see their animal in near constant distress during heat cycles. It can be impossible to keep the animal inside too.
Agreed and I honestly think it’s inhumane to breed them as well so many are in shelters getting put down with not enough homes for them all it’s very sad to see
@@nicooliver6019 I agree with you. There are too many annals living out their lives in shelters. It’s certainly very much better for them than being on he street but not as ideal as being in their own forever home. And there are the kitten and puppy mills which are disgusting.

So, best time to watch this video. We have both a male and a female, they're 5 months old and tonight they already tried to have some fun :P (we managed to avoid it). We're neutering him in 2 days, and now they're staying in separated houses. Our vet recommended us to wait as much as we could, that's why we didn't neuter him earlier, but all of this info is pretty useful, thanks! ^^
I have a friend who has been feeding feral cats for a few years. She recently trapped some feral kittens whose mother had dissapeared and brought them home to care for. She's been socializing them for adoption. She's had the females spayed at 3 months old because the low-cost spay and neuter clinic vet told her that female feral kittens can reproduce at 3 months of age. I'm wondering how true that is.
I've absolutely never heard of that and neither has my vet. Something would have to be seriously wrong with the cats development and hormones for that to happen. Usually it's cautioned that male and female cats alike can start their reproductive behaviours at 6-12 months of age. Commonly it's around 9 months for the average cat in my region.
@@yutorzh7144 5 of the fetal kitten that I rescued came into heat at the 4th month. one was just 3½ and was born tiny and was not even 1.5 kgs. And didn't even understand what it meant to be in heat. She would come to the centre of the room and sit quietly with her hinds raised and tail to the side. She came into heat again in 3 weeks. I fattened her just enough to get her to the right weight for surgery. It turned out she had cysts in her ovaries.
Thank you for all this wonderful information it is very enlightening. Are post surgical vests / outfits made of cloth safe for the incision are and do you recommend using as an alternative to the cat taking the cone off continuously?
Thank you very much this very well informative when age cause if decide to neuter or not the side effects after being sprayed or not if a d cons Caring for your cat after your surgery and feed an experience of the veterinary before all the questions to answer him concert before they go through the procedure this help a lot
My neighbour's cat drove me nuts when she was in heat, just non-stop meowing 😭. Needless to say I'm getting one of her kittens when it's been weaned lol. Thank you for the very informative video!
I have an unneutered female cat who doesn't go crazy when in heat. She does make her mating call or whatever. It's totally new to me that unneutered cats wanna roam away, because all of my unneutered cats I've had have never tried to jump out the window or anything.
If you listen to people long enough you can clearly hear their biases. 17:27 “We dont want to be neutering kittens before they’re done growing so wait until 6-7 months to spay or neuter your cat.” Do you mean growing or sexual maturity? Two different things. 6-9 months for sexual maturity. And longer for full physical development (depending on breed).
You are the best!! Thank you very much for all information you have been given to all of us. I have Luna my first cat ever and I have learned so much because of you. Good bless you. 😽😽
Thank you for the video. However, I had a ton of trouble with a few make cats after being neutered. They got crystals in their bladder and had trouble peeing. I had to add parsley tea to their drinking water to keep the problems at bay.
We lost two neutered males to the sandy bladder. After doing a bit of research, there are certain cat foods that are better to give them to help prevent the sand. Will have to do the parslwy tea thing. Wonder if I grew pot or parsley for them to eat if that would work?
I had one of my male cats neutered when he was just a few months old - and he grew up with a small head compared to his dad - who was neutered when he was closer to a year old. So a male with a small head is a thing too.
Funny thing - adopted one cat who was already neutered but sprays in the house anyway. Adopted second cat who isn't (he's scheduled) who doesn't give two hoots and doesn't spray in the house at all. First cat is healthy (had him looked at for possible medical reasons for spraying) and I think it's just a case of him being insecure. There are other cats that roam outside and it's like when he comes in from chilling on the deck outside, he has to reaffirm that yes, this is his house. Meanwhile Cat #2 has a vibe of "no one can mess with me" and will even investigate when he hears a noise like "WHO IS IT? WHO'S AT MY HOUSE?" Cat #1 doesn't do it as much anymore, but I'm still trying to figure out ways to make him more comfortable so that he understands this is his house, none of the cats outside get to come in. (Cat #1 and #2 get along, btw.)

I spent little extra worth it. my girl recovered very quickly. She was about 5 months old. My boy also but he was more sedated so I like that the vet that did my girl watched her overnight and gave me pain meds for her if she seemed uncomfortable.
Thank you Dr. Wooten for all of your insight and expertise! My male Ragdoll kitten is 5 months young. If I get him neutered at 6, 7, or 8 months of age is there a chance he may start spraying at this age? If he does start spraying and I get him neutered immediately, will he continue to spray after his neuter? Thank you again 🐾💙
They can start spraying at any time once they reach puberty, which is around 6-9 months. No one can give you an exact month. If you want to prevent it, get them fixed early. Once they’ve been doing it for a while, they can continue the behavior.
Disagree with @Silly kitten. The vet JUST said wait until 6-8 months, they NEED the hormones! And, even neutered males can spray, there's no guarantees.

His health wasn't looking good and he had to be put to sleep. I'm not sure the prolapse had anything to do with the neuter, but the infection sure did. It just all took too much out of the kitten.
I'll look into trustworthy vets in my area for my own cat now that I know what to look for.
Did your neutered your cats
My 7-month-old cat was neutered two weeks ago as advised by our veterinarian. I am relieved that the incision has fully healed now. His appetite also went back a few hours after the surgery.
I had my kitten spayed when she was only little over two months old . She kept growing and developing well. She's a smart active cat with no health issues.

When did she start walking normal?
I just had Jasmine spayed a day ago. She’s done nothing but lay around, growl at us, she will not eat, drink. I already had her back to vet because she needed fluids, antibiotics.and nausea meds. I buried a cat after he was neutered so I am scared.
My vet didnt give me a cone . This makes me nervous 😢
I wish that vets stop manipulating people for profit.
hello question! now that it’s 2 months later does he seem happier ?? more affectionate ?
I think that happens sometimes when kitten is too young and hasn't time to develop enough.. recommended neuter at 6+ months
Had out 4 month old female spayed yesterday and she is doing great so far!

How did your cat do?
I rescue cats and have cared for over 50 cats in my time. I have spayed or neutered multiple cats and have lost one cat under anaesthetic when having surgery. I truly understand your anxiety as the cat I lost was very special to me and I will never forget the pain I felt for him. But believe me, an unfixed cat is impossible to live with and the benefits of having your cat fixed far outweighs the cons. Be brave and do the best thing for your cat. Have your cat fixed. ❤️
I prefer my cats to be spayed when they are older like at least 6 months old or older because some have issues with anesthesia.
@@popsy469 please can you explain why you lost that cat? Did they do a blood test before they did the operation?
@@MirageandReality yes, they did all the appropriate tests beforehand. When he was neutered the vet said he was very slow to recover from the anaesthesia. A year later he was is excellent health apart from entropic which he required surgery for. I took him to a specialist hospital in the states for the surgery and they couldn’t wake him afterwards. When he did come round, he took several seizures, they had to resuscitate him twice, but then he died the following day. It was 10 years ago on my birthday and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. RIP my little Black Angus. Xxx

Put up notes ,took him to vet to check for a microchip. No chip.
Eventually a guy came round and said the folks who owned him moved and left him behind 😢
So picked him up and and took him indoors .

Only thing ever took to killinghekilled was rats, didn’t eat them just killed them
Ended up calling him shadow, clouded tabby so hard to see him under the tree shadows.
He use to consistently spray up many sections of the wooden fence .
He was a big love bug and even let babies and toddlers hug him in their rather unconventional way.
Not a bad bone in his body ,unless you where a rat .

Goof information to know. I foster kittens for my local humane society and they do spay/neuter at 8 weeks and 2 pounds. I had my boys neutered. It was a bit unnerving because due to pandemic, I had to hand them off from my car, then just came and picked them up. I didn’t have the luxury of vet choices, so I feel lucky vet we have is good and they did fine.
Thank you for all the information on my female cat health on nurturing.
amazing amount of information. Trying to put this on my website about cat's health.

They like to rough house with each other, so I understand the need to keep them separate. For how long do we keep them apart? Any suggestions on how to reduce the crying? It is pitiful! TYIA. 🥰
You answered all my questions. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you so much for all of your help and knowledge. You are awesome.

Thanks so much Dr. very educational video! God bless your soul ❤

Ooh, good timing indeed! Good luck with your two kitties!
Update??
Some cats can reach sexual maturity around four months of age.
@@yutorzh7144 5 of the fetal kitten that I rescued came into heat at the 4th month. one was just 3½ and was born tiny and was not even 1.5 kgs. And didn't even understand what it meant to be in heat. Thank you!!! I really appreciate you being so informative. I am getting my first kitten in 4 weeks or so and am trying to learn as much as possible.
LOL I love Mallory's random petting at the end >.
If you listen to people long enough you can clearly hear their biases. 17:27 “We dont want to be neutering kittens before they’re done growing so wait until 6-7 months to spay or neuter your cat.”
Do you mean growing or sexual maturity? Two different things. 6-9 months for sexual maturity. And longer for full physical development (depending on breed).
You are the best!! Thank you very much for all information you have been given to all of us. I have Luna my first cat ever and I have learned so much because of you. Good bless you. 😽😽
Thank you for the video. However, I had a ton of trouble with a few make cats after being neutered. They got crystals in their bladder and had trouble peeing. I had to add parsley tea to their drinking water to keep the problems at bay.
how do you make the tea, do they like it
We lost two neutered males to the sandy bladder. After doing a bit of research, there are certain cat foods that are better to give them to help prevent the sand. Will have to do the parslwy tea thing. Wonder if I grew pot or parsley for them to eat if that would work?
A pot OF parsley, LOL! Not pot!
Great info! Thank you Dr. Sara!!
Thanks so much. This is really helpful.😘😘😘
It would by nice if you could do a video on feral cat spay and neuter.
I had one of my male cats neutered when he was just a few months old - and he grew up with a small head compared to his dad - who was neutered when he was closer to a year old. So a male with a small head is a thing too.
You are incredible 🙏thank you dear DR
Thank you so much for the plethora of information!! You give off such a friendly vibe too✨
Great information. Thank you 😊
Wish I lived in the USA. What a great vet
Thank you for this informative video. My 51/2 month kitten will be getting neutered in 4 days. I understand the benefits vs the risks and the benefits.
outweigh the risks.
Thank you for this wonderful channel. Any question or concern I have... the answers are here! Kudos 👏🏾
Hi! I just wanted to say thank you!
Love hearing about your health topics. Very well done and helpful. Would love a segment on new oral flea medication and kidney medication that was approved. Happy New Year!
Thank you, Paige! We'll keep that in mind. Happy New Year to you!
@@AllAboutCatsYT please include that new thing too, where your flea med for the fur also takes care of deworming, so no deworming pills needed! Great info here, thanks. 👍
Wow, what an amazing video. Thank you so much. I had my 2 little boy kittens neutered 3 days ago. Knowing what I know now, I would have waited. My question is why is the place doing them so early? I dont know. Thank you again for the great video.
How old were your kittens?
Thank you, this video was very informative!
Great information. Thank you.
You are awesome , thank you for sharing
Thank you Slash 😂You answered all the questions, say for 1, that I had about getting my kitten spayed. The one question I still have is, I've heard that Rag doll breeds mature slower than other breeds. Mine is a Rag doll mix. Should I take that into consideration?
Hi, Mallory here. Unfortunately, I'm not a vet and can't give you the kind of expert advice you deserve. If you create a post about your issue in the AAC community forum, one of our vet moderators should be able to give you a detailed answer. allaboutcats.com/community
@@AllAboutCatsYT Thank you
Yes I wonder this as I have a Maine coon girl and they take ages, years in fact, to fully mature. Surely this should be taken account.
I spent little extra worth it. my girl recovered very quickly. She was about 5 months old.
My boy also but he was more sedated so I like that the vet that did my girl watched her overnight and gave me pain meds for her if she seemed uncomfortable.
Great video! Very informative! Thank you! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
I wish she would answer this question, I have a female cat already and I'm concerned he might do something to her. How old should I neuter him?
They can start spraying at any time once they reach puberty, which is around 6-9 months. No one can give you an exact month. If you want to prevent it, get them fixed early. Once they’ve been doing it for a while, they can continue the behavior.
Disagree with @Silly kitten. The vet JUST said wait until 6-8 months, they NEED the hormones! And, even neutered males can spray, there's no guarantees.
