    A year ago I watched it and was sceptical, but you CHANGED MY LIFE. Wood litter + a sifting box = best thing that happened to my cat-care routine. THANK YOU!
    My cat was very picky, but I transitioned her very slowly, putting more wood into the clay litter. Then I placed a second box with wood pellets only next to her old one and started cleaning the old one less often, so it got kinda stinky. One day, she just went to the new box on her own. Now I have no idea how I used to tolerate clay and all the dirt that comes with it.

      Umm i spend 60 $ a month for the stuff to sent to house. I have 3 cats inside.
      I use pine pellets in my barn for barn cats. Can't believe I never thought to try it in my house. Thanks for sharing this.
      5 bucks a 40 pound bag at farm store instead of
      20 per cat per month.
      Correction... It is only about 1 bag of pine pellets per each cat I have here in the house .
      So for 4 bags a year and a bit of sifting saves hundreds per year.

      Same for me, as well as another one regarding cat psychology. I have recently shopped for cat trees and robot litter cleaners. I did a lot of research due to the universally outrageous prices and problems with $700 to $250 machines. I'm certain it's Google algorithms influenced by AI, and the agreement in Google settings to allow more personalized advertising. I don't recall a setting regarding content. I don't mind the TH-cam feed personalization because i have enjoyed this content i otherwise wouldn't know about or search for. I do know that my Internet experience gets very slow on a capable laptop and that i attribute to all of the trackers that leach on like barnacles at every store or site we visit. For that issue, I'm adopting a new app to stop the hitchhikers. Can't tell you what it is as I had to evacuate when in the middle of setting it up. ❤ Did you try this litter? I'm will definitely try it My girl adapts well if it's the only thing going. Beats the $30 month for probiotic/antibacterial clay litter and the weight of it.

    Hi, I'm just a dude who worked in pet stores for about a year. I agree with everything in this video, but I feel like there are two points she didn't touch on, so I wanna drop some helpful tips.
    1) if your cat is used to clay litter, make sure to transition between by having clay on the bottom and covering it with pellets. This makes it easier for the cat to get used to the pellets and realize "oh wait, I'm supposed to shit on these"
    2) Some cats will outright refuse to use wood pellets, so make sure to get a small/cheap bag first so you aren't wasting mass amounts of money on something your cat won't use.

    • @jigglyanderson6105
      @jigglyanderson6105 5 ปีที่แล้ว +214

      Another good transition strategy is to slowly add small amounts of pellets to a full clay litterbox after daily cleanings (If your cat is super sensitive to change add no more than 1/4th of a cup of wood pellets a day after clump removal) until it's all pellets. And you can do it as slowly or as quickly as your cat may be cool with.

Every once in a while I will get some itchy patch of skin, and if I knock back one little antihistamine tablet, the itchiness clears up in minutes. Some people take them for itchy eyes. But, yeah, if you only have one or two important Quality Times a day where you pick them up and play and brush them out and stuff, and just washing your face and hands afterwards is enough to clear up the symptoms, then you can save the money. But it is never a bad idea to have a bottle of antihistamines in your medicine chest, because they could save your life if you ever get a severe reaction to something you never knew you were allergic too... like people dropping dead from eating caviar for the first time when they are 43 years old or something. Hi, we switched to wood litter about 6 months and its 8 dollars a big bag at Tractor Supply. Our cat had no problems adapting. I am glad to have the chemical litter out of the house. About 3 monthes ago I started composting our kitchen scraps. While reviewing how to compost on TH-cam I found that the used wooden pellets and cat poo make excellent brown waste to combine with the kitchen scraps to make great compost. Switching to pine litter and compost was a double win-win. This was a big savings all around. Please give it try and thank you Becky for a wonderful video.

      I'm here for the composting too. Nearly all the google results just claim cat poo should never be composted, and that seems silly. I live in the middle of a huge forest where one little compost pile would immediately benefit the trees even if i don't garden. Hauling litter to the landfill seems silly by comparison. Thanks for sharing.

I tried all kinds of things but she would not use the box and would leave puddles on the floor next to it. I started using the paper towels we dried our hands with, just putting them in the box instead of throwing them away, and she loved it. I have been told that elderly cats sometimes go off litter, so maybe this can help someone else with an elderly cat.

      Our cat was a little the bit like yours at one time. She would pee outside the box either because [ I thought] she was stressed due to renovators in our house or because of her diabetes. I finally had a theory that maybe she had a UTI and it hurt her to step over the edge of the litter box. So I took her to our Vet and had her tested for a UTI. She came back positive! So she was on antibiotics for 7-10 days. After it was cleared up she had not problem using the litter box again. I just had to get one with higher sides because I later found out that her aim was a little high and though most of her urine stayed within the litter box some of it would hit the top edge of the box and splatter out of the box. Now no problems!

    • @TheBriarPatch
      @TheBriarPatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@tigergold999 i'm glad you figured it out. A UTI can be quite painful for a cat. At the time she went off the litter, my old lady was 17. She survived renal failure when she was 8 years old, so it was something we always kept an eye on throughout her years. Her chow was from the vet, special for cats with renal issues, and for wet food, home made. Pets have different needs, just like people. So every single one of the pets I've had over the years have had different dietary needs. I also had a diabetic dog that survived til he was 13 (large dog) and never went blind, as is common for diabetic dogs. I attribute all their long lives and health to home cooked food. If people really understood what's in the store bought stuff, they'd stop feeding it to their pets.

    What a difference these pellets have made! I started out by adding a bit of pine pellets at a time over a period of about a week until I felt confident that my cat was adjusted. Now, there's no litter tracking at all and absolutely no smell. From now on, it's pine for us.

      I have been using the wood pellets for a year... It's amazing... No odor what so ever. I'm terrible at changing the litter and change it maybe 1-2 times a week.. I have 3 cats and 2 wood pellet boxes and 2 regular boxes. I have one cat that refuses to use them. It's the best decision I've made. I hated the smell of the clumping boxes. The pellets last 4 ever and super cheap!

      I just realised my comment caught far more attention than expected. We have two cats. First is 4 years old female which is troublesome when toilet is in question, and decided that pellets are inappropriate, and pissing around the house is more appropriate option. Second cat is 5 months old male, and while he complained initially, he doesn't seem to mind pellets all that much.
      As workaround for first cat, we put layer of standard cat litter over the pellets and that works so far. Plan is to reduce amount of litter with every change. Unfortunately, I cannot say about the smell as litter obviously smells.

    Just a small tip: if you try to buy wood pellets for burning you should read the ingredients list carefully. If it is only wood or mix of different types of woods - that is ok. But some of them (at least in my country) has some oils, resins and petroleum by-products. And that are not animal-friendly stuff. I used pellets for my hamsters as a kid and now I'm planning to "adopt" my grandfathers cat from the farm and "upgrade" her to the indoor cat. I hope she will like pellets too!

    • @sxwrtr918
      @sxwrtr918 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Thanks for pointing this out about the toxic resins, etc., that are in some bagged wood pellets. Super important for cat parents to be aware of. I heard about using wood pellets awhile back, went looking, and decided not to buy after reading the ingredients. Seems challenging to find plain wood pellets at a decent price.
      Used to buy the Feline Pine for my cat. It's great stuff and I recommend using it. After my sweetpea passed in '21, I was catless until early this year, when I adopted another kitty. I wanted to use the FPine for her, but its gotten more expensive now so Im searching again for non-tox wood pellets. Do u use a certain brand? Thank you.

    I tried Pine. It was great, but my cat has asthma and the pine ended him up in the ER. Just posting this for those who may have a cat with asthma and not realize it. Pine* isn’t the best for cats with asthma neither is the wood dust unfortunately. *Edited to remove the oil reference after Pine. It was a chemical compound inherent in pine that my cat was allergic to. This chemical can’t be washed away as it’s part of the natural make up of pine. It wouldn’t have mattered how the wood was processed. I did my homework and thought I was using the safest brand, kiln dryer, no added scent, perfumes, or chemicals. Labeled non-toxic and hypoallergenic. Sometimes we can do all the research we want, but like with asthmatic humans the allergy determines the reaction.* Thanks for the likes and comments. ✌🏾♥️💯 Edit: Thanks for the likes. I still get replies occasionally so wanted to add that I do use a clay litter made by Dr. Elsey. It’s called respiratory relief. It’s low dust, fragrance free, and hypoallergenic. Other options if you want to avoid clay are Paper, Crystal or wheat or corn based litter. I have tried all of those, but food based litters attract weevils, and in the south they’re prevalent so I can’t use corn or wheat litter. Paper based litter wasn’t absorbent enough and Crystal litter doesn’t clump and can be messy. I use the Litter Robot which requires a clay litter. Dr Elseys has never caused an asthma attack in my cat. I also avoid wearing, spraying or diffusing any fragrances, essential oils, or perfumes in my home as they can cause an asthmatic reaction. I also use an air purifier. My cat has an occasional very minor asthma reaction during season change as a reaction to outside allergens. If your cats asthma is severe, then you can get an inhaler, use antihistamines or steroids. I had another cat that passed that had severe asthma and required daily meds. I’m happy to answer questions about treatments if you tag me. Avoiding the things above works for my current cat who doesn’t have asthma as severe as my other cat. Hope this helps. ♥️

      The pellets for pellet burning stoves come in hard wood and soft wood where I am. Same price and the 'hardness' of the pellets is the same, so you might look into hard wood pellets. The wood type only matters if you were actually burning them.

    • @jaeshasway
      @jaeshasway 5 ปีที่แล้ว +207

      Tran Shar Burning? This video is about cat litter. I bought the Pine Wood cat litter. My cat has asthma and I ended up taking him to the emergency room. He’s highly allergic to pine. I did research after that incident and found that many cats with breathing or allergy problems generally can’t tolerate it. I posted my comment as a warning so people would be aware of it. Dogs and cats have asthma and allergies just as much as humans do. We can’t just switch up the litter without testing it out. They also don’t complain when they dint feel well. I understood the warning signs but unfortunately I didn’t know that cats can be highly allergic to pine. The packaging doesn’t include that warning so I didn’t realize it was his litter causing the problems. His inhaler would only work a short while so I knew it was serious. He ended up having a major asthma attack and required oxygen and a breathing treatment.

    I have the same litter box set but that's not how i use it! The sifting pan goes between the solid ones & you put the pellets in that top pan. When ready to clean, scoop the poops of course, but then you take the top solid one & dump it into the sifting pan. After sifting, the sawdust is in the bottom pan & the good litter is in the sifting pan. Just dump the good pellets into that top pan, empty the sawdust in the bottom pan into the trash. Super easy & quick.
    Also if you want more boxes, buying 2 sets will actually allow you to get use of 3 boxes (instead of 2) because you really only need 1 sifting pan with 1 empty pan to sift into, so you can put the other 3 out as "top" pans.
    Also, Walmart sells the same box set for the same price..just FYI

      @@CandycaneBeyond speaking of diaper pails! I got a Litterlocker (also LitterGenie is another brand, plus one more I can’t remember) and it’s fantastic.
      I was scooping poop every day into little compostable poo-bags, but throwing that into my kitchen bin meant it stank and I’d have to empty it roughly every day. I was wasting a lot of bin bags having to throw them away mostly empty (as well as it being annoying, plus the stinky! 😵). The smell was definitely worse when I was using compostable liners in my kitchen bin (made for use in a normal bin rather than the kind used for composting food waste), but it was still a problem whatever kind I used, and I really wasn’t comfortable throwing away so much single-use plastic to NOT use compostable ones.
      I also live in an apartment without outside space so options were limited… but now I scoop the poop into the Litterlocker, press the lever to drop it into the bag below, and it seals off the VAST majority of any smells coming back out! I’ve got two cats and I only empty out the Litterlocker once every 2 weeks when it starts to get a bit stinky (and I wear an N95 mask when I open it up to tie off the bag to throw out, because MY GOD! 😵🤮😵😅). It does still mean using plastic, but MUCH less than before, and it’s a massive quality of life improvement!

    I saw this last week and gave it a shot that same day-- I'm in AWE. The room that houses the litter box used to reek of ammonia no matter how often I cleaned, and there was litter/dust everywhere. It was to the point that I hated to even walk down the hall near it. Now, there is absolutely zero (0) pee smell, no errant litter, no dust, no clay smeared on the floor. It smells like a woodshop (not unpleasant!), and there might be a few pellets or bits of sawdust here and there, but it's nothing compared to before. This has been a total game-changer for me and my three little dudes. Seriously. And the fact that 40lbs of pellets from Tractor Supply Co. is about $20 cheaper than 40lbs of litter from Chewy...ain't too shabby. Thanks so much for this!

I had to come back today though to say thanks, because I recently took in a litter of puppies. Yes, puppies. After weeks of dealing with thier mess, I decided to try something. I got a plastic pool, and filled the bottom couple of inches with pine pellets. The puppies love it! They have went potty in the pine pellets every single time. Never have had a problem.
    The stacked litter boxes are good to have as it helps keep unnecessary pine from breaking down after becoming wet, but I find the shaking part to not be entirely necessary if you forget/ can’t do it. The cats will push the sawdust down through the holes while walking/ digging and we still empty both parts out every two weeks or so to start fresh.
    100% cost effective and environmental, though it can get super heavy, but most cat litter is anyway. 10/10 highly recommend!
    ** the pellets feel like legos if you step on them with bare feet so be careful

      "Never had a problem" Aside from the fact you are poisoning your cats every day. Pine is toxic for cats, notes Petcha, because they may cause liver damage and can be fatal. Shame on this lady, this video will likely lead to the painful death of thousands of cats.

    One note, the equine bed pellets have a flame retardant on them, better to use the wood pellets for stoves if you are trying to save money. I went back to Feline Pine a few years ago, prefer it's smell.

    Extra hint, if you line the bottom pan with a doggie pee pad it works even better. You just get a size a bit bigger than the pan and you wrap up the whole thing and toss it when it's full of sawdust. I have 5 cats who love this pellet litter system. And yes I do use the horse bedding. It works great.

    After watching this vid several weeks ago, i gave the wood pellets a try. I bought the new siffter litter box and had it set up next to their old boxes of clay litter. It just sat there for a while without my cats using it. So I decided to use one of their clay litter boxes as a 3rd option. I mixed the clay litter in with the wood pellets. After a couple days they started using the mixed litter box.
    Then a a few days later, i found they had finally been using the wood pellet litter box as well.
    So about 3 days ago I bought another siffter cat litter box and replaced one of their old clay litter box. I filled it with wood pellets only, but kept the 3rd mixed litter box as an option. Now my cats aren't even using the 3rd mixed litter box at all. They're only using the wood pellet boxes. So today I dumped out the 3rd mixed box and said to heck with it, through some pellets in there too.
    My cats have accepted this transition after about 3 weeks. I highly recommend using the 3rd mixed litter box option to help transition cats to the new wood pellet litter boxes.
    I will say this, my cat room smells sooooo much better. It smells like a wood mill as she describes in her video. Also, i got four 40 pound bags of wood pellets for little over 20 dollars at Lowe's. So Thank you for making this video and educating me about a cheaper and much better alternative for my cat litter!!!

      I feel iffy about this for a few reasons.. maybe it seems too good to be true in a way idk.
      I feel my cat isn't gonna use it, she's veryy stubborn. Two, I'm pregnant so does it cover the ammonia smells? (My boyfriend scoops it now, i don't)
      And lastly, she takes really hot/stinky shits daily and smells up the entire place. Would the pine smell mask that too?

    • @zilphee
      @zilphee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@brij5261 yes. The wood absorbs the odors very well. You won't smell urine at all, instead you'll smell wet wood. And when they poop the wood absorbs that odor much better than the clay litter does. You can still smell the turd but not nearly as strong. And once you scoop them out the odor is gone. When i was using clay litter i would completely change their litter once a week for fresh litter to keep the odors down. It seems like it only took 3 or 4 days before the fresh clay litter would start smelling up the cat box again. Since I've switched to wood pellets I am having to remind myself to check their litter box daily to scoop out poop, because there is no smell throughout my entire home to remind me. Lol
      And my cat room which always smelled awful, even with fresh clay litter, smells woodsie now. :)

    Loved your Video! I have been using this for years. Really like the sifting tray, as I have my own sifting method, but this looks faster and easier.
    Just 2 quick bits of important information for everyone. 1) You must make sure the Pine Pellets you buy for your kitty, are KILN-DRIED. It must say this on the package, or you can give the company a quick call. I use Woodside Pellets out of Utah, or Tractor Supply Pellets (various mills are sourced, but is Kiln-Dried). The Kiln-dried is imperative, as it gets rid of the PINE"S OILS. Pine Oil is TOXIC to cats, dogs, horses, people, etc., and will cause Neurological damage, and is a neuro-TOXIN. Bad for people to breathe-in, too. This means it will cause brain damage. I've done tons of research and study.
    2) DO NOT USE the bags of pine pellets, for the Wood Stoves, as, for the most part, they have chemical additives to BURN faster, like kerosine. A small number of Companies do not add these, but this is MUCH HARDER to find out about, so I would and do just avoid any bagged pellet meant for the wood stoves. just get the one meant for horses' bedding, and make sure that it is Kin-Dried.

    Me and my family have been using the wood pellets forever. It's the best, cheap asf, biodegradable, safe for cats, doesn't track, no dust, smells very nice. It's super easy to use! I get mine at a feed shop, it's sold as horse bedding so it's completely safe for animals. My cats have never had any health issues or allergies with softwood or hardwood pellets.
    And I'm talking about the wood pellets used for burning or horse bedding, don't get that marked up crap at the petstore, you'll be paying $15+ for a 20lb bag at a petstore. Go to a hardware store or feed store. I've never seen pellets with additives up here in Canada but apparently some pellets have binders and additives, just look for the ones without any additives and make sure it's kiln dried for best results.

      I was told it can be harsh on some cats paws, and don't always like it. I bought some (from a sort of farm animal store, forget the name). Cheaper than recycled paper pellets we've been using. When I filled a tray with it the mum and her kittens didn't want a bar of it (mind you the kittens weren't litter trained then). I must give it another go. So a sifter tray is essential them? The pellets remain up and the wet bits fall to the bottom?

    • @Metqa
      @Metqa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Raeleeis my friend doesn't have a sifting tray and she uses this stuff. I'm pet sitting for her and I scoop out the poop and then I just move the unwetted pellet to one side and scoop out the dust. I use a regular scoop because sometimes solid pebbles get scooped up and ijust shake it above the trash bag. I think I would prefer to RAKE the pellets rather than shaking it. When raking the pellets around, I notice some that seemed still solid but the pushing on them caused them to break down. I don't know if they'd break just from shaking. so I pushed the pellets around and press downward and that breaks up any dust and they fall down below the whole pellets.
      I'm thinking of making a perforated box for my nieghbor as a gift before she returns from out of town. I think it would save her on time, effort and lost pellets.
      Also, I'm gonna try to encourage her to compost the dust. This wood pellets makes several bags of pine dust and that fills up the trash bin pretty quickly. though light weight, it is voluminous.
      I think I'll switch my cats over to pine pellets after this cat sitting session.

    I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video. It literally transformed my life, and my experience did give me a few more tips to take note of. You are absolutely correct on the sifting pan working better with a gap. I hot glued some little legs to create .5 inch gap between the sifting pan and regular box which helped tremendously. I also widen and elongated the holes for sifting where necessary with a small drill bit because I was having to forcibly shake it down. Slightly opening the holes was the game changer for me to change from liking it to loving it. I have 3 indoor kitties and 4 boxes. The sheer price difference alone was a huge motivation, I can flush the poops and compost the shavings. WIN! My allergies are better with less clay dust and my house is cleaner. I honestly had zero problems in transitioning my cats as we only had 1 at the time so our 2 newer babies only knew the pine boxes here. Never have once had a problem *knock on wood* but we are fastidious with their toilet maintenance. Minimum of twice a day box check and usually immediately remove the poo. We have guests come over and are surprised to find we have 3 cats and 4 boxes. I technically have a 5th but they didn't use it for 3 months straight so I took the hint and removed it. Haha. Thank you again for your extremely useful and informative video!!

Add a half cup of wood pellets to their clay litter, and gradually increase the amount of pellets in their normal litter over a few weeks until you’re using only pellets. If you push to fast and your cat starts peeing outside the litter box, reduce the pellets again and gradually increase the amount of pellets slower.
      Also another good option is to have 2 litter boxes. One clay and one wood pellets. My cat will pee in the wood pellets but refuses to poop in it. I’m verryyyy slowly eliminating the clay litter
