Hurricane Ida's Remnants Blamed for at Least 23 Deaths in NYC, New Jersey

- At least 23 people died, including a New York City toddler, and tens of thousands were overwhelmed by floods as the remnants of Hurricane Ida devastated the tri-state area overnight with historic rainfall, at least one tornado and savage winds.
Nine of the confirmed fatalities were in two boroughs - a 2-year-old boy, 45-, 86 and 48-year-old women and 50- and 22-year-old men in Queens and a 66-year-old man in Brooklyn. Details on the ninth New York City victim, which Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed at a mid-morning news briefing, weren't immediately clear.
NYPD Commissioner said it appears all the New York City home deaths involved people who lived in basement apartments.
"Our hearts ache for the lives lost in last night's storm. Please keep them and their loved ones in your thoughts today," the mayor said Thursday. "They were our fellow New Yorkers and to their families, your city will be there for you in the days ahead."

I agree. It’s sad and unconscionable that homeless lives aren’t even mentioned in the news or by the government. People are not homeless because of moral character. People are homeless because housing is unaffordable. An enormous percentage of unhoused people are disabled. Sub poverty disability income, housing & discrimination, and Social Security‘s cruel years long wait before disabled people get a hearing for benefits-that is why they’re homeless. If you’re not homeless, it’s because you have some privilege or unbelievable luck that an unhoused person does not. Homeless lives matter. We are all human. Time to stop erasing people just for not being rich, white/ benefiting from rapacious capitalism.

This was 7 inches of rain with a little wind. To new Yorkers, this is a disaster. Imagine if a cat 4 storm made landfall in NYC. A million of these sheep would drown.

Wow! I left New Orleans like 5 months ago. New Orleans got it's problems, but I love it there. I be wanting to go back. But because they get hit hard by hurricanes like every year & the flooding, I might have to reconsider. God bless y'all in New Orleans and the rest of Southeast Louisiana & the Sipp.

@@ruolov1 Last night in NJ area, every 15 mins for hrs there was an emergency alert - flash flood, go indoors unless evacuating, tornado watch, etc. Our Apt complex tennis court is waist high in water. And in some of the parking lots, some cars flooded. There seem to be few if any apt flooding or damage, though.

Yes but it was expected and extensively forecasted for Louisiana. However the amount of rain that the northeast got rivaled the amounts in Louisiana and it was NOT expected. It caught a lot of people completely by surprise which is why so many people died.

What's sad about this is that you cannot be prepared for what natural disasters can bring. Weather forecasters, preparations and other such planning cannot predict it. There are so many factors that can take place-weather wise that makes up how strong hurricanes, tornados, flooding, etc can be. Very sad 😞

Getting around the city today wasn't easy , there was a lot of damage to property and some loss of life , but we r blessed compared to what they going through in Louisiana for sure

@@ginajones2328 thank you for the kind words.. I’m blessed because I didn’t lose much other than windows and 2 huge trees in my yard. I finally got a new generator so I’m living large right now. Lines for gas are hours and hours long. Again thank you for the prayers and kind words. I’ll be ok, I feel for those that lost everything and the animals.
Why didn't they evacuate. You know days before that this is coming. This is not over for gulf coast and them. Next two weeks more is coming
Houston is only the 4th largest city in the USA and it is almost impossible to evacuate, even with all the freeways. The endless line of cars just clog the exit routes and burn the (limited amount of) gasoline just sitting in traffic for 24 hours. Sadly for the For NYC and the NJ area, evacuation would seem a bit unachievable.

The Northeast had no time to react to this because no on expected this storm to stretch this far. It literally snuck up on us like a cat and then it pounced on us ferociously. That’s why we’re all shocked and confused right now. We totally underestimated this storm completely.

Those waters are hard to swim in even those that can swim. There’s many sharp objects under the dark dirty water that’s what makes it super dangerous. It’s best not to try and swim and go to higher grounds.
