      @Kaname Locon Good question- REALLY GOOD!! I say that because "when a country collapses (REALLY collapses), parents DO start trying to sell their kids- just look at Thailand, Vietnam, India... where the parents sell their daughters into whoredom!!!"- There are MANY documentaries on here about that- just look up all of the vids on trafficking and underage prostitution. Of course they all "say" they never would, but none of them have been starving or homeless from a collapsed economy. Once that happens, you'll start to see that (and young girls willingly doing that because they are hungry themselves). In fact, that is happening already, as you'll see if you watch the vids on that. Also, there are parents already that fight with their daughters over marrying a guy with money- in hopes they can get some too....

    • @davidpiper4743
      @davidpiper4743 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lashlarue7924 that is a fair point. Western Gen Xers raised their kids sheltered from a lot of things that most other children in the world contend with every day. So much so that many people under 35 actually believe words are violence (try telling that to a kid raised in Somalia under the rule of a Warlord).
      It really isn't fair to expect Millennials to suddenly realize their world view is flawed after Gen Xers did nothing to educate them.
      If intergenerational blaming is a serious thing, I think we all have failed on one level or another since the WWII generation. That was probably the last time we had a selfless generation that actually did something to make the world better for everyone. TBH.

    • @lashlarue7924
      @lashlarue7924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@davidpiper4743 See, this is the kind of ridiculous, myopic absurdity that I'm talking about. How do you know that Millennials are the ones with the flawed world-view? Have you made any effort to gaze beyond your own nose and into the mirror? Their perspective isn't exactly being shaped by the same conditions that existed between 1950 and 1985!!
      It's normal for generations to conflict ("these youngsters today..."), but it's getting to the point where it's toxic and absurd. I'm 36, and while I frankly despise my own generation, I don't exactly have much higher regard for yours. Anything you say about your children or parents is something that you may as well be saying about your own damn self. (!)

      @andybaldman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@xqt39a The thing is, people are not using their brains in 'new ways', aside from using them less. Remember when you had to search for things you liked on the internet (assuming you're old enough to remember those days)? Now everything is recommended to you. And that short-circuits the search process, where you might find something other than what's recommended. Can you still search yourself? Sure. But nobody does. And that's a meaningful change, as it gives those doing the recommending much more control than when people do the looking for themselves.

    This documentary was jarring, thought provoking and humbling!
    The segment on the autonomous trucking industry and the profile on that hardworking husband(truck driver) and wife was very sobering.
    The segment on the auto workers and closed down factories/warehouses in Saginaw, Michigan was numbingly sad!
    I respect the president of that autoworkers union that was profiled.
    With all due respect; the expresidential candidate:
    Mr. Andrew Yang has been warning everyone of this since last year!
    I really believe that this piece unanimously deserves the "Peabody" award and also the "Edward R. Murrow" award for journalistic excellence!

      Erika8085 I think the engineers know full well that their machines are displacing people from their jobs and really don't much care if at all. Also - IMHO - I believe the world economy at-large has been or is at least now starting to transition from money based as the currency with which to get and sell goods, products, items, services, etc. to being more reliant on AI. At least that seems to be the will, hope, vision and "foreknowledge" of the engineers. An economy starting to resemble something akin to what is usually portrayed in space-based science fiction literature and programming especially in pop space sci-fi (e.g., Star Trek or Star Wars, the only two parts of sci fi that I am intimately familiar with although I have read and seen other sci fi franchises). But all of those economies are at least somewhat differently portrayed (if portrayed at all) in different franchisee according to the whims of their respective creators. Although I think money will still be around then but its total value would have significantly decreased so it would not be used as it is today no matter what form it has now and might have in the future. So at least it would probably not be used in quite the same way as we use it today. So in the future (possibly the next 100-200 years) we could be well into a Star Trek like universe, both economically and otherwise. Just my thoughts.

      They do but what is anyone supposed to do about ir? Get a group of people to go up to Washington and pound open the front door of the Capitol, demanding their grievance be heard? The rich run this country dude. The people are powerless. When we do rise up we'll be called "Insurrectionists." Whatever the grievance is doesn't matter. What the REAL problem is is that we are being brainwashed to believe that we DO have power and we're shown fascinating things like this that tell us alll that is wrong in the world and that if everyone would just know about it somehow it will magically get fixed. Well, everyone does know about it so now what. The government is very clever. They and the media that serves them successfully fooled us into believing that those "crazy rednecks" ie fellow American citiizens that forced their way into the capitol on January 6th were somehow doing something bad against the American People. All they were doing was demanding to be heard. Our response should have been "Hear Them!" and the incdient should have been a message to the government from all of us that said hey, if you're not going to represent us, listen to us, allow the rich to call all the shots, we're going to come to you and demand such. Doesn't mean we all agree, but they should have been heard, not locked out and made unwelcome. Instead it was a message loud and clear to the American People which said: You citizens don't run shit. We run this place. Get your ass back in the voting booth that we control with gerrymandering and the electoral college and shut the hell up! And if we don't? Dude, we haven't seen nothin yet the kind of violence that this government is capible of bringing onto its own people to force their ways. They control us by the barrell of a gun. We have no power. YOu like Frontline documentaries? I do too, but don't do anything. What if at the end of every documentary they did they answered the question: What are we supposed to do about it? Turns out those "creative" jobs were not truly creative... and that creativity is algorithmic after all.
      Only the BEST in any "repetitive" field are safe FOR NOW from self learning AI, and jobs we THOUGHT were creative are not actually creative, like lawyers, doctors etc, who have a stable knowledge BASE from which they operate.
      The BEST and truly creative people in THOSE fields are the inventors of new laws and how to use them or NEW techniques of curing or using medical inventions...
      In other words, MOST people in ANYYYY field are average by definition. And AI will algorithmically replace you, not out of malice but out of necessity.
      And AI is going to replace their jobs, AND GOOD RIDDANCE, they are a cancer to overall social health, all those "workers' unions that demand more without giving more, and stagnate the world for much longer than needed,. And Frontline here is doing a disservice here by using feelings and tears to manipulate, and as a guide to what is desirable, like the trucking family etc.
      We will see if Marx was right when he said the "workers" were dumb or ignorant only because of a lack of time to improve themselves; that if they had the time they all AS A GROUP would learn more or improve their skills or knowledge base.
      I think Marx was wrong on that point and many others. The AVERAGE "worker", which is the vast MAJORITY of them, will only do more of what they already do in their free time, more beer and football and NASCAR, no SIGNIFICANT new learning or improvement will happen for the great MAJORITY of them, only more bread and circus. That improvement didn't happen when the work hours were reduced from 18 to 8, and they will not happen when AI replaces them all together; they will as always look to daddy government for solutions and help. I worked in plenty of factories to know how the "average" worker spends his or her free time, and how they think about new basic skills learning, or basic reading.
      Fortunately for HUMANITY AS A WHOLE, it is only those few who will actually improve themselves and learn using all that free time, and use that free time for other than bread and more circus, that are needed for social change, as has always been the case, the few great that will create and move the world forward in the human sense of the word.
      Un-fortunately for humanity, those few who move the world forward are always seen as the enemy by the "workers" and the great majority of the public who want social stability at all costs. As an example just look at how Elon Musk is being treated for improving the world and looking for actual long term solutions, and for giving the world a bit more freedom of speech in social media like tweeter. The AVERAGE person's analysis of those CREATIVE things he is doing is seen as bad or ill intended and want to stop it, they buy his antagonists narrative who want to stop him for their own capitalist reasons of control and self preservation, i.e, traditional legacy media accountable for its survival to corporate world wide entities.
      Still, the age of putting AVERAGE OR BELOWWWW AVERAGE teachers or doctors or lawyers on pedestals for their knowledge is almost over. They all were mostly in it for the money, not real vocation to serve and help, but pure job stability.

    “We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.
    But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.
    What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us.

    As a current freight broker who respects drivers immensely, I found the section on the trucking industry to be very misleading and anti capitalistic in the nature of the presentation. Today, bad drivers at bad companies make little money, but drivers who are truly professional can do very, very well. For example, one of our specialized drivers just bought his wife a rolls royce wraith this month.

      The best bet is to learn to program, otherwise AI will eventually take your job. AI will ultimately become better programmers than any human decades in to the future, but by that time there will already be a system in place such as Universal Basic Income, or we'll have already evolved passed a monetary system all together.
