Everyone makes it out to be a playground, but it's just getting worse and worse. The people that retire to the supposed "safe" communities are going to start realizing that this state is no longer safe between all of the people moving here with their entire families (some of which contain bad apples) and the weather getting worse. Florida was never meant to be a concrete jungle like developers are attempting to turn it into, and mother nature will always prevail. This state was full of wetlands for a reason. History will repeat itself, and mother nature will take back what is hers.
Don't be tricked, the heat is intense. We have had over 100 days of temps over 100°F it's humid so it feels like 110°F easily, we have sinkholes, hurricanes, poisonous snakes/spiders, invasive pythons/anacondas, alligators, sharks, we have overinflated housing prices, homeowners insurance, and improper infrastructure for the insane amount of people moving here. Roads too small for the 100's-1000's thar have moved I to new communities on roads not made to take thar much more traffic. @@CKnight1983 it's a shame when people go live in storm zones and they are allowed to live in buildings that cannot withstand such storms. Then they complain of devastation and government incompetence?
Note to anyone who wants to live in Florida: Build your house on Steel stilts, so that the first story is simply your parking garage and storage, a place that can and will be flooded almost every year (even inland). And NEVER build on any land lower than 15 feet above sea level as storm surges usually come in at 18 to 22 feet above sea level. And since winds will hit 150 mph, use only steel framing and metal roofing that is bolted on.
That is probably why the house that reed timmer showed at the beginning of the storm being slammed by storm surge waves was still intact after the hurricane hit
The replacements are built on stilts ... if you visit Galveston island Texas, all of the new construction is either on stilts or elevated land or "hardened" construction. So of those homes are really nice too. Insurance will demand that homes be built to hurricane standards ...
This advice really only applies to islands/keys, right on the beach and a mile or less inland from the beach, or on a floodplain. The other 80-90% of Florida just needs a good house with a good roof. And ideally natural windbreaks around the house just far enough from the house to not be able to fall on it.
Hands down the best footage I have ever seen before, during and after a major Cat 4 hurricane. My sister's house was destroyed from Ian. She lives in a mobile home on Sanibel. Then was damaged again from Debbie, and again with Helene. She's been wanting to sell since Ian but the storms & hurricanes keep her continuously fixing it. I feel awful for all these people in Florida.

Still think those beach homes are worth millions of dollars? I just feel sorry for the generational people who've inherited their homes there. Just like sanibel and fort myers beach when ian destroyed their generational homes. Most couldn't afford to rebuild because they weren't actually wealthy.
You're right, we're witnessing a transition where generational homes and cozy communities on the coast like Ft. Myers Beach or Cedar Key are going to change by necessity...and that comes at a huge cost...financially and for the soul of a place too.

I'm from Louisiana and it's lack of experience with hurricanes that make people overconfident. Climate change is exacerbating every disaster dramatically worse and people are in denial! Fear of admitting the reality of the change contributes to the loss of life and property, what I'll it take for people to wake up!
Stay safe out there in Florida Mr. Petramala, and thank you for sharing this footage of the destruction from hurricane 🌀 Helene and allowing the public to see what is going on on the mainland.
The shore should be all parks and the people living at least 3 miles inland. Then there would be a lot less damage affordable insurance and a lot of very nice parks and public beaches for everyone to enjoy.
Like that one woman commented, walking from home to enjoy the wildlife and nature is significant. And not everyone has the same ability to blithely walk 3 miles, as a young and moderately athletic and able-bodied person can.
It’s pretty simple: building code should require a certain minimum elevation for the land itself. Not building on stilts. Land should only be zoned for building if it is high enough to safe from storm surge.
Hello how are you doing today? I hope this message find you well…I’m Aaron chace I live in Massachusetts i work as a plastic surgeon never been married before because of my work but now I’m ready to spend the rest of my life with a beautiful soulmate!❤ I’d be glad if you can give me a chance to be your friend.

Unfortunately, the rethuglikkkan party has poisoned people's minds with that nine words nonsense. This is the result - people who don't listen to trusted authorities.
Sad. In the last couple of years, my wife and I took two trips to see "Old Florida", not the tourist Florida. Places like Cedar Key, Pine Island, and Matlacha among others. All were devestated by Ian and Helene. Fortunately, we got to experience what appears to be a vanishing time in Florida's history. Cedar Key was about those old buildings, and bars along the shoreline, not those high rise homes on pillars. It won't be the same.
Sadly you're right...but the neat thing about Cedar Key, if you go to the original settled parts of the island where there is elevation, you can still see the historic homes.
My prayers go out to all these people. We're still rebuilding in Southeast Louisiana from Ida. Insurance companies left and cancelled our policies. Prices went up and some people haven't even started rebuilding yet.
Wow And you live in the wealthiest country on earth so everything will be ok. The US will pay for everything. Also the Insurance companies can't just cancel your polices that is theft the goverment will take them to court and compensate you. The US is not a 3rd world country there are rules and regulations in a democreatic country as well as human rights are there not !
I'm sure of this -- there's a lingering idea in some that a surge means the water comes x feet further inland. You could tell from the interview with the couple who *somehow* survived the Pink House in Ft Myers Beach during Ian that that's what they thought. They'd recently moved there from NY and had never experienced a hurricane. The "lingo" was just words.
I've been here for every hurricane since Hermione in 2016. Irma in 2017 flooded my neighborhood, 3 feet standing, and I'm a quarter mile inland. Storm surge is almost as scary as the hurricane that brings it. Good example... step flat foot and watch the water go away from your foot. The harder you step the faster the water is pushed and the deeper it is as it flows outward😊.
I've been through quite a few hurricanes & I hate when they make landfall at night - after you lose power - all you hear is trees falling & such and the ocean sounds so furious - very frightening!🌀😮
@@dotlaowai we did evacuate for most them - but one year was a very active hurricane season & we evacuated 3 times that year but the 4th time we didn't because it wasn't supposed to be bad - but turned out to be the worst one of the year - we stocked up - boarded up & had a generator. That thing hit us at night & we ended up with no power for 10 days- houses went into the ocean & National Guard had to come in to help. After that - we evacuated every time a hurricane was coming 🌀🌀
My heart and soul ache for everyone affected. Giodness gracious, just so awful. It's also a reminder of how vitally important it is to evacuate, if possible, when storms like this are forecasted to affect you. Prayers for you all.
There are times when humans simply just have to get out of the way - and that’s becoming more and more evident in Florida and elsewhere. Stop rebuilding and pull back.
They won't though. Florida should have blocked off all of these areas decades ago and made sure they would never be built upon for this very reason. But greed always prevails.
Sad news indeed. Having lived in the US for several years, I have to comment on the fact that the building standards in the US are so bad it reminds me of the story of the three little pigs. Those who live in Hurricane or Tornado Alley should have robust, brick-built homes and businesses. Unfortunately they don’t. I watched a strip mall being erected in Houston and it was 90% wood. Unfortunately, this will be the result of cheap builds. Prayers go to those bereaved families.
The issue is not the type of construction, it is that if you build on a beach you will eventually lose your home. Florida has passed many laws about building standards. If you live inland, you are pretty safe unless a tree falls on your house. Most of the damage comes from storm surge, so do not live near the beach and do not live in a flood zone.
The reporter said some of these homes have been here for decades. It is more the that the storms are getting stronger and stronger. But if you lived here you might actually notice that yourself
We, as American CITIZENS should get help FIRST. Not the Venezuelan gang members or third world riff raff who bleed our govt and turn this nation third world! Or money to Ukraine!! WE, US, AMERICANS FIRST!
Exactly what will happen. Then wait and see what these same people will say when the home insurance industry ends coverage or raises their rates to unknown heights.
I am so devastated for you all. What a horrific amount of grief pain and loss. I can’t imagine what you all went through. The days to come. I wish you all the best of luck. I will pray for you
We’ve lost 2/3 of the wildlife population in fifty years…because of humans. We are the cancer on this planet. If we stopped to care more about everything besides humanity we would be in a much better place but we’re completely incapable. Read up on it Manuel.
This is the comment I've been looking for. For some they just aren't aware but for many they just like to be repeat victims for something that happens every year during the same months like clockwork and instead of being proactive they just react when it's too late.
I always wonder why they let them build on the shoreline in these low elevation areas, and who the heck thinks its is a good idea to provide insurance at any cost along the SE coast. I feel for those who are flooded but why even put yourself there?
Bingo, but they still vote for the guys that think they are more powerful than Mother Nature. You think conny would have nuked Helene to blow her off course? 🙄🙄🙄
It’s 118 degrees in Phoenix going into October which is unheard of , we haven’t had rain since last April , everything is dead as far as plants , animals and humans also dead due to this relentless heat. I do believe these are earths lasts days .
My daughter and her husband have raved about Cedar Keys! They stay a couple days before heading to my son-in-laws parents place because they love this small little town! They have their favorite place for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Praying they can rebuild!!!
And now the rich mofo"s will move in and snatch up the property for a song and reap profits, the good ole american way. Leaving whatever residents are left, to watch with their noses pressed against the window.
Please stop hating on rich people. Most have worked extremely hard to get to where they are. My husband and I are rich and he started his businesses from the ground up . Please don’t hate . Yes there are evil rich people but many are not evil and just wanting to have generational wealth for their families. If you wanted you could do the work to become rich but most likely you don’t want to and that fine.
Looks like it's going to be only the rich folks that'll reside out there. Poor and -middle class- folks are not going to be able to afford to rebuild month after month, year after year. Nor build their homes/businesses on stilts(which hopefully will become mandatory). Insurance costs will make sure that only the rich can afford to pay those premiums. Sandbar living; gotta love it.
Much of weather and storms, tornadoes, droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, cyclones, etc are manipulated for maximal effect by governments via frequencies e.g. haarp, for the last 70 years. The research is not hard to find.
One of my few and fondest childhood memories growing up; the few times mom and dad and all of us really had fun together, our few trips to Cedar Key. Makes you wonder the intentions behind this storm and who will now buy up all of this real estate. Will it be Blackrock as usual? The real devastation will be the costs of homeowners insurance after this - only the very wealthy will be able to own homes in Florida, and most of the homes will be Blackrock rentals. FYI: Hurricanes can 100% be created.
Why do people continue to live on the coasts when this is bound to continue happening, and even get worse? Should there not be laws in place reagrding how close one can build to the ocean? All that pollution just swept out into the sea. Its bad enough what just throwing awsy trash does to the environment ffs.
I feel for the people of Cedar Key. My family has gone there a number of times and I recognized so many of the damaged buildings. I hope enough people come back to keep it alive.
He said it, its part of coastal living and it sucks. The worst part is they will have to rebuild to the new storm codes and most of those people probably can't afford to rebuild that way so a bunch of rich jerk offs or out of town money will move in and the town will never be the same, very sad.
Sorry for people's losses, but building on the water is so risky. I know it's beautiful being right on the water, but disaster can strike too easily. Also, the developers will come in and build ugly, monstrosity condos as replacements, so the small-town character of that area is also destroyed. Excellent coverage too, btw.
The 6 houses built on stilts across the road from my mom's brick and wood house tha5 was built on the ground were all demolished by Katrina. My mom's house is still there. Thank God my mom had sold that house 6 months prior to Katrina.
*Simply put, building human habitations and businesses at ground level on barrier islands on either coast of Florida makes ZERO practical or economic sense.* *To be REASONABLY safe, but not TRULY safe, from a maximum high tide combined with a 25 foot+ storm surge from a Category 5 hurricane, people would need for the bottom of the first floor of ANY structure to be located 35'-50' above sea level. Structures would have to be placed atop steel-reinforced concrete pilings that extended DEEP below the soil's surface, which would exponentially drive the cost of construction beyond the means of most ordinary citizens.* *That's how people build and live in parts of coastal Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia, etc. Americans WON'T live that way because we are too arrogant to accept the bottom line reality of Mother Nature as she has always been. We insist on manipulating our environment to suit our desires instead of accepting the realities of our planet's weather patterns, which are immutable, relentless, and never moderate.*
Don't worry Florida. You have two of the smartest guys on the planet claiming they are smarter than mother nature, or how to beat out viruses. You know? The guy that parades around in white boots, and the other guy that deems injecting disinfectant as the magical virus potion. 🙄🙄🙄

I can't wait to leave but so far God needs me here in FL but honestly it's not a good place to retire
Just don't live close to shoreline and you will be fine
As long as you live inland and not on the coast, you'll be fine.
@@KholouredReason I am heading back to Hawaii for my golden years. Years ago almost bought a condo on Pensacola Beach. Yeah I could have sold after 4 years and made a killing, then again any storm like this could have wiped me out too.
I'm from Florida and I lived there my entire life and went through more hurricanes than I can imagine. As a Florida native I'll never understand why so many people poured into our state dreaming of paradise without understanding the risk.
Because the Northerner's saw a warmer winter climate & lifestyle paradise. I'm from NE, people buy waterfront property on the Cape, North shore & Hull etc. we get hit with Nor'easter's & they move to FL 7/5.

Agreed! A before, during, & after! Thanks for your dedication!
Agree 100%. From the regular news outlet you have to watch and listen to a talking head then see a short clip.
I was flipping channels on TV about noon (AZ time) to see what had happened with this hurricane. Even CNN had nothing. (!) They were too busy making noise about politics.
I am trying to convince them to pay attention to weather.
I'm in Sedona and watching this, too. So different from here.
Same here...and agreed!
It’s Florida CNN hates us especially our governor.
I am really tired of these awful news channels! They are cold as ice! Seems like they have no compassion all they care about is politics.
Sending love from Scotland 🏴 Absolutely devastating. My condolences to everyone who has lost their Lives, Homes and businesses. 😢
Check out a guy called Dane Wigginton . . .
Two of my best friends live there. I've had my engagement party, my birthday party and many other wonderful times with my friends there. It's so hard to see this community devastated like this. This was the best reporting/coverage I've seen so far!
@@CKnight1983 it looks like a great community 💞
@@CKnight1983 it's a shame when people go live in storm zones and they are allowed to live in buildings that cannot withstand such storms. Then they complain of devastation and government incompetence?
@@krama2940 what are you talking about and why are you making such assumptions and remarks. You have no clue and no one has complained!
You would think this would be obvious.
Most of what you are seeing is not new construction. This is an old fishing town. Not a tourist trap.
Thank you, but I am sorry to hear about your friend!
This is why their homeowners insurance is so high!

You're right, we're witnessing a transition where generational homes and cozy communities on the coast like Ft. Myers Beach or Cedar Key are going to change by necessity...and that comes at a huge cost...financially and for the soul of a place too.

7 genaration Floridian. My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering from these storms. But let's be honest here, you live on the ocean in a state that is known for devastating hurricanes. It's a numbers game, sooner or later this is bound to happen. You have to have a back up plain knowing one day this is going to be the outcome. I was born on the water, but I know not to live or have a business a few blocks from the ocean.

Yeah don't worry everyone will forget their sympathies as soon as some of these people end up on the streets, then they'll be demonized for being homeless

I've never been, but I wonder if the big corporations will come in & prey on those people. It seems like a poor town, although historic, not exactly a "Miami Beach tourist attraction". So huge corporations can now go in & buy from these devastated people and make it a corporate destination. Really sad.

I get it about sounds that haunt you after disasters. I live in the heart of wildfire country in Northern California and did wildfire search and rescue for years. As much as I remember seeing the devastation, what I really remember is the sound of walking, the crunch from walking on the burned rubble of homes, of people's lives, of everything that could burn. Also the smell, I can still smell it so easily.
These moments will always stick with us no doubt
@@JonathanPetramala I don't know if you have ever come to California for any of the wildfires, but I was at the Tubbs Fire (which burned my hometown) and the Camp Fire. I’m not sure if that’s correct. Usually you’ll just see layers of water coming in till it accumulates to a certain height.
When authorities say evacuate, people need to listen 😤
So true! Destin, Panama City destroyed by development. Never should be allowed to build within a mile of the beach.

Очень жаль простых людей,страдающтх из- за урагана.
Its like a tsunami.
@@fullcircle4723 That's exactly what it is.

La naturaleza no cree en eso, vi como el huracán Sandy derribó casas y hoteles bien construidos con ladrillos y de hormigón.
@@kcochran5700there is no actual evidence of that. Your experiences are anecdotal.
They might consider rebuilding with a 3D concrete home. There are a few companies that have made them cheaper than a wood frame house.

Those who do not learn history
Are bound to repeat it
This is the comment I've been looking for.

Looks like it's going to be only the rich folks that'll reside out there. Poor and -middle class- folks are not going to be able to afford to rebuild month after month, year after year. Nor build their homes/businesses on stilts(which hopefully will become mandatory). Insurance costs will make sure that only the rich can afford to pay those premiums. Sandbar living; gotta love it.
Mother Nature is Talking, so everybody can listen
Much of weather and storms, tornadoes, droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, cyclones, etc are manipulated for maximal effect by governments via frequencies e.g. haarp, for the last 70 years. The research is not hard to find.
Powerful hurricanes are not new in any way, shape, frequency or form.
Derpy derp derp. When did she ever shut up? You and her have a lot in common.
Tornadoes, hurricanes, storms, tsunamis , earthquakes will always exist on this planet. We are never prepared for them.
Everything west of US19 all the way up the coast was devastated. Sad.
The town is from the 1800s
It's not new
I feel for the people of Cedar Key.
All of the newer elevated structures performed as designed.
That's why you build on stilts if you want to live near the water.
It has to be the way forward
Even stilts can be undermined by erosion. Storm surges impact and weaken the terafirma.
First ever event in Florida ... this will never happen again ...... (( funny video .. show us more ))
The 6 houses built on stilts across the road from my mom's brick and wood house tha5 was built on the ground were all demolished by Katrina. My mom's house is still there.
Thank God my mom had sold that house 6 months prior to Katrina.
Stilts aren't gonna work forever...lol!
This place has been my go to when I come down to Florida. I am devastated to see this. My heart and prayers go out to the people of cedar key.
*Simply put, building human habitations and businesses at ground level on barrier islands on either coast of Florida makes ZERO practical or economic sense.*
*To be REASONABLY safe, but not TRULY safe, from a maximum high tide combined with a 25 foot+ storm surge from a Category 5 hurricane, people would need for the bottom of the first floor of ANY structure to be located 35'-50' above sea level. Structures would have to be placed atop steel-reinforced concrete pilings that extended DEEP below the soil's surface, which would exponentially drive the cost of construction beyond the means of most ordinary citizens.*
*That's how people build and live in parts of coastal Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia, etc. Americans WON'T live that way because we are too arrogant to accept the bottom line reality of Mother Nature as she has always been. We insist on manipulating our environment to suit our desires instead of accepting the realities of our planet's weather patterns, which are immutable, relentless, and never moderate.*
Better to just not build in these areas.
Don't worry Florida. You have two of the smartest guys on the planet claiming they are smarter than mother nature, or how to beat out viruses. You know? The guy that parades around in white boots, and the other guy that deems injecting disinfectant as the magical virus potion. 🙄🙄🙄
