Ida Hits NYC, Causes Widespread Flash Flooding and at Least 37 Deaths

  • At least 37 people died, including a New York City toddler, and tens of thousands were overwhelmed by floods as the remnants of Hurricane Ida devastated the tri-state area overnight with historic rainfall, at least one tornado and savage winds.
The grim tolls have only increased over the course of the day Thursday and are expected to climb further as emergency crews navigate flooded homes and cars.
Thirteen of the confirmed fatalities were in Brooklyn and Queens and included a 2-year-old boy, 43-, 86- and 48-year-old women and 50-, 66- and 22-year-old men. Another three deaths were confirmed Thursday afternoon in Flushing, the same neighborhood where the toddler and two others were found dead, officials said.
Two women and a man were discovered dead in the basement of a two-family house, officials said. Their deaths are believed to be storm-related -- and the NYPD says so far all the home deaths appear to have involved basement apartments -- but will be further investigated. Details on the 12th and 13th New York City victims weren't immediately clear.
"Our hearts ache for the lives lost in last night's storm. Please keep them and their loved ones in your thoughts today," the mayor said Thursday. "They were our fellow New Yorkers and to their families, your city will be there for you in the days ahead."

Base apartments should now be outlawed if close to waterways. Gulf coast states do not have basement apartments for a reason. God bless the families that have lost love ones. Praying for the northeast Families.

@@agentadrianne i grew up in Mobile, Alabama and there were memories by grandparents of two storms in the 1920s and 30s that swept the long Bay right over the downtown and people's homes up 20 feet. Ships carried a mile or more inland, and Mobile is above sea level and 40 miles up a bay. 60 feet surges at the uninhabited Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island at the time in the 1906 hurricane and likely in the 20s,30s. These were, of course, not tracked but just slammed in with no warning. Likely Cat5+...but who knows.
Then no major direct hit for over 40 years. The 1979 hurricane sucked the water out of the Bay, but had tremendous winds. The Gulf front communities that now existed were overtopped and concrete block summer rentals as well as many stilt homes were swept to sea completely.
Then no major destruction storms again almost 30 years. Lots of annoying storms, lots of poles down, some trees on houses, some mild flooding but no big hit again till Ivan and Katrina.
This is at the very center of the South Coast of the US, where at least 10 named hurricanes happen every year, and as many TS.
So coming in only once or twice a generation to one area is the historic norm, and our building method is to deal with the annual typical and one typical ocean storm a year.
You just experienced a perfect storm. Every condition was right to create major killer storm in the Gulf right off Louisiana, directly south of Mobile/Pensacola... Then carry thst water northward toward Ohio where it met a major low pressure storm system already there heading east. They merged and happened to drop 5" an hour for a couple of hours on the mouth of the Hudson and Delaware.
You have basement apartments and subways (unthinkable in Mobile) and a faith that the civil engineering of the modern city can handle anything. That is a leap of faith that we've found is unmerited.
Camille did a similar flood with even more rain in the Ohio Valley due to merging systems back in the 60s with tremendous loss of homes snd many deaths.
Sorry for their loss and the horrible drownings. It however is unlikely a great conspiracy of cause....just a terrible occurrence.

I am a victim of the Ellicott City floods.. I lost everything three separate times. It all happens so fast. We had a river out back and when they say "flash" flood, they mean it. We were never given warning though except for the last time because it was caused each time by overdeveloping and the city refused to listen to our cries. It was a historic event they said.. a one in 100 year flood they said. Lol yeah right, 3 times in 6 years? 25 years in that house and we neved had issues until they started building like crazy the last decade and a half. I luckily had three floors and was high enough each time to run to safety. I now live in a bottom floor condo at the bottom of a hill and this type of scene terrifies me. We were supposed to get hit with some of Ida's worst remnants but we got lucky. My heart is with every single person hurting tonight.. believe me when I say I know how it feels and you are not alone.
Edited to add that my heart is so broken for that baby's teacher. She loved him so, so, so much. To see someone care that much about a child she knew through her work is one of the most beautiful and heartwrenching things I have ever seen.

A few years ago, a flood came through our little mountain town. I lived in a studio cottage. This is very reminiscent of what happened. I just got home from work, it had been raining very hard and suddenly stopped, it was eerily silent for a few minutes, I saw orange water start flowing down our street and had a weird feeling ..then heard what sounded like a freight train coming and large, large boulders tumbling....it was a pile of 3 cars coming down the culvert behind the cottage, with the flood waters. I saw a wall of black water rise and completely submerge the cottage behind me and I just screamed because nothing else I could do in the moment, I knew things were about to go dire. The water knocked that cottage off the foundation, the four walls went crashing and floating away with the cars, the lady and her cats swept away....and a wall of water hit my back door and ripped it off the hinges, water was rushing in like a river. The windows were completely submerged...I could see debris pressing against them, freaking out that they would break...I had 3 cats somewhere so I could only stand at the front door and guard them from washing out. The pressure on the door was a battle...I was sore for days. The fridge floated around, the couch floated, the cabinet doors ripped off, and in the water behind me there was bubbling underneath...from a broken gas line. It started getting dark and water was up to my thighs, I couldn't find my cats, red cross was evacuating all of us....long story short, someone appeared with a flashlight and we found all the cats, soaking wet and covered in mud but alive, and that was what was saved. Everything else was gone. It was traumatic, and completely life changing. The next morning (we had to stay at a home in a street over), we went to assess damages and saw the water line in the bathroom was one inch from the ceiling and the rest of the cottage was about 4 ft up the walls. Sometimes still, weird things give me PTSD. We (a daughter and I) slept
on a few couches of people we knew and met for awhile afterwards, eventually borrowed an empty townhome for a couple of months, lived with a blow up mattress, 2 plates, 2 forks, 2 cups, etc, until we found an apartment again and moved into it and started rebuilding from scratch. It's never easy, but there's no other way but through and forward, and healing from all the pain of loss. It's a long, long journey, but it is possible. Much, much Love and Light and healing to all who are enduring such suffering. May all who have lost a loved one find some Peace and comfort for their hurting hearts. 💚

Your head has been filled with nonsense. Yes, Jesus was a man who did walk the earth and had amazing teachings, which no one can argue with. It has taught me how to be a better person. The rest is myth which was invented by man as ‘Christianity’ spread and absorbed the indigenous beliefs of other cultures who believed that mere mortals were the offspring of some god or other. Having studied the subject in depth for decades, I can assure you you’ve been duped in a cult-like fashion. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the teaching directly from him are a great standard to live by. Not what Paul or others wrote, second hand, in a few letters, or what the ‘Old Testament’ says (Which is Judaism) but the life of Jesus recorded in the gospels…. And only that.

    • @StrangerThanFiction11

@@cornishmaid9138 Thats the problem, you`ve been studying this subject in depth for decades but with your head knowledge/intelligence, you never came to God with a repentant state as a sinner, thus your heart was never changed. A lost man is not capable of understanding spiritual things, what happened was probably you had some sins you couldnt let go when God wanted you to drop all that pride and wickedness, thats why people dont get saved in the first place. My life got changed when I came to Jesus broken, he gave me a new life to live by.

@@StrangerThanFiction11 that’s a really nasty reply. Who are you to say that this person is a sinner? Just because he doesn’t believe in your deity? Sounds like god is not really all that nice. If your a good person, who doesn’t murder or steal or whatnot, shouldn’t he just forgive you anyways? Why would he not want to have all of us in heaven anyways instead of living on earth if he loves us all so much? Plus the fact that we have to love him or else we will be killed sounds to me like an abuse victim who learns to appreciate the hand that hurts them while the abuser gives mercy for not being a total brute.
