How Counter-Strike Solved FPS Games

  • Counter-Strike is one of the most loved FPS games of all time. It is also the most influential; its core mechanics can be seen in many forms today, from Call of Duty to Rainbow Six Siege. But this is not what makes counter-strike special. It's only a small piece of a larger puzzle, a puzzle we hope to explore in detail in this video.

It's unfortunate that Valve's seemingly new-found incompetence in handling their multiplayer games has most of them (like CS2 or TF2) on life support right now.

@@Artician i wouldn't say that necessarily for cs2, but that more than applies to tf2. It's a shame how far it's fallen but it's a miracle that its community still keeps it going all these years later.

@@ArticianDoesn't apply for CS2, it reached one of it's highest peak in player numbers of 1.4m+ concurrent daily players AGAIN recently after basically nothing but tournaments and stickers
It happened after everyone was convinced the game was dying & it's all over for Counter-Strike (for like the 20th time in over 24 years lol)
But unfortunately as a player of both it and TF2, you can definitely say TF2 is in a depressing limbo state right now

The big difference at a LAN party if you carry on like a muppet, the player you were abusing was right there in the room so you - well, didn’t. I'd say this was accurate before CS2, definitely not anymore. It's been around almost a year now and still pales in comparison to CS:GO. I think eventually it will get back to the old quality, it's the amount of time that it might take that worries me. Kind of depressing that CS2 was rushed out AND replaced a game that realistically didn't need anything other than a fresh coat of paint, I don't think it was a great decision at all in retrospect.

the smoke lineups on mirage is a cool thing to cover, and its even more important in a game like vail VR, a game in which, for a while, I was pro in. My team spent HOURS perfecting lineups on the maps, our favorite being a reproduction of Dust 2, which you had to physically throw, meaning that it was possible to throw a smoke from the top of mid all the way onto B site, same goes for impact grenades, though those had not yet been implemented at the time of my professional play, a common smoke we used on CT was to smoke A long from tunns, or on Ts to smoke goose or CT ramp from bedroom(tho people called it skatepark due to the concrete structures placed there instead)

I took a long break from CS and probs gonna get hate for this but Halo also. (Halo 1,2,3). Trying other of the modern shooters and I just can't grasp them.
To me Halo and CS seemed to just be my go back games. Comfort. Halo positioning is key. (Granted I play a lot of comp and comp custom game lobbies.) But in CS positioning is insane. It's addictive. Idk what it is. The slower paced fps games where positioning is everything is just so ADDICTIVE.
I played a match of Halo 3 BR spawn tourney rules the other day on Xbox a couple weeks ago. And man was it a breath of fresh air. I just got back into CS2 and I'm loving it. I've been playing for 2 weeks straight. Nothing can touch these style of games to me. Especially CS and economy. Pistol rounds are VERY stressful but very fun.

It's funny because it's true! Still, we just need an anticheat, old game modes back and replacing some of the Premier 12 yo maps like mirage and vertigo. I'm having a fun time with my mates playing it... And sometimes I hate it, only to come back at it the next day.

The first time playing counter-strike was when cs:go was release on the Xbox 360 at the arcade section. I don’t remember too much about the experience I have, but playing cs2 today remind’s me of this vivid experience I have on this game. My younger self thoughts this game was like a off-brand version of call of duty that was fun, but fairly forgettable experience. Today, it’s probably Valve most popular game of its library and one of the most successful fps shooter of its time.

It's a huge point about how stable the game is in terms of what they put into updates. I used to love Rainbow 6 Siege, but between updates breaking the game, a worse cheater problem than CS at times, and CS has a bad cheating problem, and updates which were focussed around dropping new characters in a battlepass style that you needed to either grind to get or pay actual money I fell off the game. Doesn't feel fun to have to play it nonstop to have all the characters, doesn't feel fun when they nerf the one character that season you did have the points for. Doesn't feel fun for the meta to change on a dime around new operators, and for them to need to change the mechanics and attachments, doesn't feel good to have to check the attachment meta, and how the new characters work if I come back. These are effective monetization strategies but poor retention strategies.
By comparison, getting better at CS doesn't mean buying the new meta operators and watching a tutorial on attachments that will be overridden when they decide to change the scope system. Again. It means coming back to a game that I'm already familiar with, and choosing to learn different things, adding new utility, smoke lineups etc, to the ones I already know. It means improving on fundamentals. And the gameplay is timeless. Sure, you're going to have fun with a call of duty, but it's not going to be a balanced competitive experience. Sure, you can play siege but the monetization has distorted heavily the core experience and makes it harder to enjoy. Sure, you can play Valorant, but they have all the problems with hero shooters AND bad maps AND poor gunplay with ugly graphics.
These other games have fallen victim to the current trend of battlepass content munching shooters. I don't want my comp shooter to have fortnite progression in it. I want it to be the same thing day in day out, to not need to pay more money on it, and to be able to track my progression and improvement. You do not get that feeling anywhere else.

8:21 before I started playing CS, I had heard about Valorant from my brother. I was surprised when I heard that you couldn’t heal, or revive, I was surprised. At the time I discovered Valorant, I was a huge TF2 player. I didn’t get into Valorant anyways. My friend got me to play CS a long time after I discovered Valorant without knowing I discovered Valorant. Now I play CS more than TF2. I still love TF2, and I do play it once in a while though.

My favorite part of csgo, is i dont like it, i hate it even, but that's what's awesome, a good game isn't a game for everyone, think of every legendary title, there's going to be an audience that dislikes it, not out of unwillingness to learn or just salt from chronic skill issue, but because a good game seeks to give a very particular experience, an experience that wont be for everyone, a game that tries to appeal to everyone will become watered down, and streamlined, which is what we see with alot of modern titles, these people aren't envisioning an experience they're asking "what'll make me the most money", they'd never put in a feature as awkward as csgo recoil, i hate the idea of my barrel facing one way and my third bullet exiting the barrel at a 90 degree angle cuz Ak's have a mind of their own, but certain players will dedicate hours to recoil patterns and getting the perfect rhythm of shots to stay accurate and become so good at this sysyem you'd swear they had an awp when they really just mastered the Ak

That chicken clip at 3:37 is actually fucking crazy... Dude had his crosshair on the dude that was covering the other entrance, and in a fraction of a split second, deduced that the other guy on top was the immediate threat. That's some crazy game sense and reaction speed... Reminds me of the sweats I play against in silver 2 comp 🥲
