hey gang this video is about the old versions of overpass and how much the map has changed. Overpass in particular is a map that I have been playing a lot lately, and I have been interested in quite a bit for a long time. In fact, I've had this video or a video similar to this planned for a long, long time. In this video I start by recounting the many changes that Overpass has undergone, then I talk about the current state of overpass, and finally I get a little philosophic and relate it to the current state of counter-strike as a whole.

Here's a fun history lesson on the semi truck model on de_overpass that nobody asked for:
The European, Scania inspired flat-nose truck on Counter-Strike 2 _(2023)'s_ de_overpass actually used to be a Mack Cruise-Liner in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive _(2013),_ in which the model was a repurposed asset from Left 4 Dead _(2008)._ Meanwhile four years prior in Half-Life 2 (2004), there also existed a flat-nose semi truck model modeled after a Skoda-LIAZ 706 RT. This model in HL2 was at one point used as a placeholder during L4D's early development, and the model from L4D/CSGO was made specifically as a replacement. The HL2 model would also go to be completely remade in Half-Life: Alyx (2019) also modeled after the Skoda.
That's a nearly 20 year evolution of a single video-game asset. Being made for Half-Life 2, then remade for Left 4 Dead, repurposed for CS:GO, and remade twice for Half-Life: Alyx and Counter-Strike 2. Four completely different truck models with varying levels of detail in terms of polycount and texture resolution and real life inspiration... but they're all crashed and positioned in the same orientation.

This is a fun comment but I have to disagree. The truck model in CS2 is inspired by Mercedes MP3, not a Scania.
It's not the only HL2-based asset in the game! The original CSGO Overpass renditions has tons of junk props in the map that were inherited from HL2! (Namely the chinese takeout food junk props, a large low poly orange plastic bottle, and a "606" cleaner spray bottle) While CS2 absolutely guts them in the revamp, they still exist; albeit in Mirage. The original HL2 red couch still resides in apps on B site and a HL2 door texture resides on mid right below window. B site also has breakable beer bottles from HL2 as well. Crazy to think these assets from 20-ish years ago are still being used all over the place.

Funny, I like the “experimental” maps the most I think. Nuke and Overpass are the most fun to play in my opinion. I also loved Cobblestone and considered that my favorite map when it was in the game. Maps like Dust2, Mirage, Inferno, Cache, etc. are fine, but they’re just a little too suffocating and clinical for my taste.
It's incredibly unfun to lose to 5 stacks at any decently high elo just because they coordinate rotations and your team doesn't speak English
cache is def my fav 3 lane, but as of late im loving vertigo, nuke and especially overpass

Overpass is very fun to play in casual, but not so much in competitive.
Imo, they should just trim down the tree area of long. That way you can still push all the way up and peek but there would be no almost dead space over there. Like cut out that entire open area and bring the outer wall forward, extend out party to make up for it, open up the section of bathrooms that exits into long and make that the new open area, then leave where the wall CT's/Ts could boost at along with the corridor that leads into site. Basically, cut out the open area they have now and make whats left the sort of new open area in order to trim down and simplify that side of the map.
Then they could work on simplifying playground and mid to funnel players from mainly sitting over there. Maybe even shift the exit into mid from to the right a bit so the first players can run out to the right along the wall but still be seen if they run left.
Also, I really think they should reimplement the raised section near the tunnel into B, though I don't think it the raised platform should extend that far out. And if they do implement it perhaps there should also be a little alcove under it like shadow for mirage.
Super historical summary of the map's life and development. It actually hurt my head seeing the way that connector used to be, as someone who often plays there as CT.

I had a distinct image of the first few versions of the map in my head like I thought I remembered how they were perfectly back then but it looks like my memory was hilariously wrong lmao. The hut in A site was hilarious back in the day people would just play ring around the rosie with that thing while the bomb was planted 🤣

Great video. Personally, overpass is my favorite map in the pool right now just because it is different than most of the other maps. It has its flaws but there's so much you can do as a player on this map.

I want to live on Overpass, I can play it so many times and the enemies either don't know anything and play unorthodox or I meet other addicts and they teach me a new thing or two.

As someone who no longer plays cs but watches all the big tournaments, I enjoy maps like overpass and vertigo specifically because they're so weird. They force pro players to dig into their bag of tricks

Yeah idk man, overpass is definetly my favorite. Couldn’t tell you why, I can also tell you I loved cobblestone more than any other map so far.
I think that the big size of Overpass isnt a flaw as much as it is a feature, and a great on imo. Having a huge emphasize on rotating or staying just in case its a fake, is such a fun gamble. Maybe you should rotate because your team is gonna need the back up, or maybe you should stay cause it could be a fake, and then youre gonna lose B site easily. Or maybe they run through con and get that.
Having to gamble and really think to whether or not rotating is a good idea or not, is so much more engaging, than maps like Mirage, where rotating is simply always the right answer, because you can go from a-jungle to b-kitchen in 5 seconds. On overpass your position is so much more important, thats why i think the size of the map is great.
Would i like for every map to be like this, no. But thats what makes overpass special and a fun twist to the map pool.
Overpass has definitely become stale and is far from perfect but Vertigo and Mirage are WAYY overdue to be pulled from active duty, pros and comp players have been calling for Mirage to be pulled for 5+ years. Vertigo is just a horrific map top to bottom, everything is a head glitch and it's so small successfully selling a fake buys you MAYBE 5 seconds until the CTs are rotated on you.
mirage and cache are amazing maps vertigo can be pulled cache added back in 😁
@@fakuhu178 I don't think Mirage is a bad map it's just boring... it has the same problem Inferno does the meta has been defined for years so every Mirage game plays out the same. I loved Cache tho and hope it comes back.
@@evelynsahoe8896 I dont agree I think mirage is one of the deepest maps. Cause if you think about it, its intuitive and simple kinda like d2 but not too simple. Its quirky and its clean. I just love it I grew up on it and played it without getting bored for 8+ years :D. And it hasnt changed much at all since then.
@@evelynsahoe8896 I also think there should be more strategic maps such as nuke mixed in with aim-map like maps such as cache d2 and (and mirage? although mirage is a bit more strategic). And the simple layout of the old csgo favorites. Its in CS DNA and should not be removed!
@@evelynsahoe8896 It doesnt have to be a new meta every day for something not to grow stale you know. Its about trying to become better at the little things everyday (or however much you wanna play :)). There is basicly infinite mistakes you can make and mirage is the perfect battleground.

As backwards as this sounds, we’ll look back on these days with some sense of fondness.
I had nostalgia in the last minute of the video, remembering about the time when I used to play CS 1.6, then CS GO and now CS 2. Maybe this is the evolution every other thing in the world is bound with. This timeframe is similar to having see a toddler grow, who now is in their teens. Change is the only constant. Like described by my man, I can bet on the fact it will be good but maybe this time I might have a toddler :)
3:50 I'd appreciate if they would add something like this back, cause while playing wingman, b site only has 2 entrances wich makes playing as terrorists a pain in the ass.

Cs has some of the wildest plays with broken maps, considering that some of those are 20Years old makes it all the more crazy

you have a good point about upper onto B being reintroduced. The only real problem with Overpass is that you need to have the B monster smoke down as the CTs. It's annoying that you can't see if you even threw it correctly. The Ts beat the CTs on timing rushing monster tunnel, so if that smoke isn't down properly, it's a free b-site take for the Ts on a rush. :P

5:57 what does it matter if it favours the Ts? The map is CT sided already so that could bring the balance back a bit.

This map will forever hold a place in my heart, I remember playing CS:GO around maybe 10 or 11 years ago, coming home from highschool, taking a pepsi bottle out of the fridge and drinking from it while sniping guys from the heaven in B :(

I really like the optimistic look at this games future at the end! So many people have been complaining and being nihlisitic about it, but I have faith things will improve in time
(hell, comparing the game currently to how it was at launch or during the limited test is already pretty significant)

vertigo needs a walkway that goes from ct towards ramp, behind the headshot box. it will literally fix the map
Overpass is my favourite map. There are solid ways to "normally" play this map, but if your enemy isnt carefull about checking corners you can get quite some cheaky shotgun kills. There are some real options on playing this map offensively or defensifely and there is also a high risk high reward in pushing as a ct.
Many things one can do on ct, while t-side still feels not to unfair.
Not much of a CS player but Overpass has always been a favorite of mine, reminds me of a Garry's mod RP map
move the CT spawn to long A and it fixes B site balance, which is where the majority of the CT wins happen. Then move T spawn to upper tunnels and give a new path down to B long. Fixes balance issue, and size issue as you can remove a chunk of T side and cut new paths.
Overpass is by far my favorite map of all time in counterstrike and I actually disagree with this video heavily because I think that its ''Flaws'' are its strengths. I like how overpass has pretty much every type of engagement and gameplay scenerio possible. I think the design also gives the map a perfect dynamic for competitive play. CT side B players are faster to rotate because the B players are usually playing on the site itself or water but A players usually play up a lot further so if they rotate they either have to take a long time, flank instead or save their guns. This adds up to the meta default being 3B 2A for CT. the connector is what ties it all together to make this map what I consider perfect because if there's an A rush the CT's either have to rotate 1 or more of their B players up to A lowering defense for their site and the A players have to get back to site without dying or the B players can flank the Terrorists through connector if they have water control. But if the Terrorists rush bathrooms and maybe even kill a ct it forces a reaction from the B site and they could keep rushing A or they can rush down con, molly graffiti, smoke heaven and fight whoever is on B to take the site. Thats an insanely small summary and example of why I love this map so much, I think that this map and Nuke are Yin and Yang to competitive CS.
It's weird. I must have played on early versions of Overpass cos I was playing csgo then, but it's just been memory holed in a way that say nuke and inferno aren't. I can remember "old banana" and the old nuke vents, outside rafters, etc. I can only remember Overpass as it is now, especially B and connector, the old ones don't seem real.

Overpass is my favorite map in csgo. And i would actually love that elevated peek on b from monster. That would actually make it more fun interesting and cool.

Tbh, overpass is my favorite map to play in premier matchmaking. I have great win rate on it and love the new visual uplift. I'd like to see the second monster peek being implemented honestly coz it would be easier to clear site for the Ts
One map I believe Valve could have looked back to would be the Source exclusive map "Port" or DE_Port. Yeah, this one used tunnels and layouts way more wisely. I mean, you knew that the bombsites were on two opposite ends of the map, so that was a no-brainer. That looked like a precursor to how I believe Overpass SHOULD have played like.

You said something at last was the most important thing. CS: GO was bad in 2013 when it first came out. However, CS: GO was using old source engine that was already polished enough. But Source 2 is totally new engine and recent CS 2 it's better than the beta CS 2. Yeah, I agree with the cheat issues and movement feels different. People who played CS source came to CS: GO said the same thing in the past.
It might even be better than CS: GO in next 10 year. Let's hope so! ❤❤
CS2 after these recent patches feels as good as CSGO if not better....Just imagine how bright the future is for the game. If valve actually release some fun modes like VIP, surf in game and bring back the old modes like danger zone, flying scoutsman then CS2 will be better than GO ever was

It’s understandable that cs2 will improve with time, I’m sure of that as well.
The issue is that Valve is a multibillion dollar company, and the community hasn’t asked for a ton, mostly basic quality of life features. Higher tick rate servers and better anticheat. Instead, valve introduces the armory; more skins, not protection from cheaters for legitimate players.
Beyond that, the weapon system has been horribly unbalanced for 10 years at least. Many gamemodes were removed and the community server browser was destroyed.
More things have been removed or broken than have been fixed or added, meanwhile valve adds new monetization on top of the sketchy gambling that already exists, and thinks they can play gigachad by ghosting their community on basic QOL issues like the cheating epidemic. This is why people are upset.
I probably do better on more experimental/less favored maps just because at the end of the day, fewer people play it so it's not walking through a sweat shower like when you play Mirage.

Imo It's not too big, makes a nice change and is pretty fun. Imo you didn't mention the main issue with overpass which is really that it's so CT sided.

Thanks for showing old overpass, but your perspective about overpass is very subjective, in my opinion it's the best map with nuke and vertigo. It is great.

I’d have to disagree with overpass being too big. The big issue in GO was the cpu consumption.
I hated Overpass since day one. No amount of patches made me like it. Weird ramps, stairs, uneven surfaces, dark spots, depressing aesthetics, choke points, weird geometry - you name it. Nothing made me like this map. I hated playing it in GO. But in CS 2 I don't know why but I like playing it more. I hate Mirage as well, but for completely different reasons (it's just boring, every round is the same) but in CS 2 I started liking it. It's like the game itself alongside the engine and the nades dynamic brought some fresh air to some hated maps in my mind that it tricked me enough to start liking them. The more you play something you don't like , the more you start liking it I guess. In CS 2 currently there's not a single map that I hate. I play everything - even Vertigo, which is claimed to be the worse map, but I don't care, I enjoy all of them. Some more, some less.
I just hate inferno in cs2 cause how cluttery and claustrophobic it feels

I do keep forgetting with how broken CS2 is, that it IS a new game. its not just CSGO ported to source 2. it is is own thing, and there will be game breaking bugs for the first year or two. and they wont just go away, but they wont be as common or as easy to pull off. just like how it was with GO in the later years
Overpass was never my cup of tea but it's not a bad map by any means. It's fine where's at but the trivia that I enjoy the most about the map is that is partially based in the canals level of Half-Life 2.

You can access it by right clicking CS2, clicking properties, going to beta, and selecting csgo legacy, you only have a few more days to play it. (I may be wrong about the exact route)
