How hard is it to get a federal government job? Do you know the competition that you will be facing? How can you get an edge and get a job offer? I thought it was mission impossible but in 2019 using my 5 points veterans preference and bachelor's degree I finally got a GS position (GS-11) at a job I was already at since 2016 as a contractor, now full remote.

My frustration is that when you apply, the federal govt is required by law to consider others before you. Military folks, veterans, displaced federal employees and others, are all considered first before you even if you are qualified for the job. It's really tough when you are competing against these folks.

VRA is another hiring path that allows veterans to skip the competitive process and get into a government job under Excepted service guidelines. After 2 years of satisfactory service in the position, the agency has to convert the employee to Competitive service.

I am in the process of trying to get a new job with the Federal Government. I'm currently a WG trying to switch to the GS side, i've been getting referrals for GS positions, maybe an occasional interview here and there, but no job offers. I've been applying for jobs for the last 2.5-3 years and have not been having luck getting a new job anywhere.

Do you think it's easier or harder when getting a government job for someone currently in the government or someone coming in off the streets?
Also is there a pecking order for who gets the job when it comes down to a vet, disability percentage, college degree, or spouse?

It's probably easier for someone in the government because of the internal hiring path and if they are in the competitive service it opens up a lot more opportunities to apply to.
The pecking order determines on the agency that is posting the job announcement so it can vary. Overall, people from different background can end up in the "Best Qualified" category and could be interviewed for a job.

What if your resume is on point, but you don't select expert proficiency for their job questions?
In the past, i had a terrible resume, but I selected expert on all questions and they were all referred

I suggest marking “expert” for the majority of the questions so you do not disqualify yourself. If you do not feel comfortable doing that then perhaps look for another job announcement that fits your experience better.

It's easy. Back in 2008 I applied and every agency I applied for offered me a position. I had three offers to choose from. I applied again in 2010 for another fed job and was hired quite quickly. I've been at this job since. I don't know why people say it's difficult. I had more trouble in hugh school finding work

You're probably applying for low GS levels or in areas that are not popular to work at

Congrats! I'm not sure what job series you are but I believe transfering should not be much of a problem. Hopefully, the government continues to transition more into 100% remote work type positions.
