I'll take federal employement. If you value freedom of movement then go federal.

Im starting my state job next week. No complaints here and i view it as a stepping stone to a federal job. Its kind of a no brainer.

Thank you for talking about government/public sector jobs, almost all other videos I've seen focus on corporate jobs and salaries, while that may work for many it doesn't work for all. YT really needs more creators like you talking about this sector!

Thank you! There are definitely a lot more people interested in the private sector.

Great comparison! I'd like to point out the differences in hiring processes too. The state is usually quicker and doesn't have as many hoops to jump through. Another perk is that some states have their own holiday observations, and thus get extra PTO because they observe them in addition to the federal holidays.

My opinion is you cannot go wrong picking a job with the State or Federal Government.

I just was offered a state government job and I am so happy. I would work $7.25/hr. in a government job than $1000/hr. in a private sector job.

State employment is essential at-will, just like for profit companies are. You have more security working for the federal government, more mobility, and better pension. Most states don't even offer matching 401ks, TSP equivalent.

Two things to consider: the examples you used for Virginia could include COL adjustments. Richmond is still one of the most affordable cities in the US, Northern Virginia / DC is one of the most expensive.
Also contracting is a great way to do potentially do work for the State/Local. The work I’ll be doing for the State on contract will actually be in a higher band than the equal Fed. position.
Thanks for the information! This has been helpful.

I have worked for both Federal and County governments in the northern Virginia area. The county pays more for a psychologist than any federal agency. So I think it depends on the position you apply for.

    • @em34ev3r
      @em34ev3r 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

yea but what happens if the county decides to cut your position over night? With the feds, theres something called RIF, and you will get first preference to any federal department you qualify for. Not to mention, you can transfer nation wide. I know, because I have, and its an easy process.

    • @demetriesnorth4135

thanks for the feedback greatly appreciate it. I was a federal employee recently, so I know what the rules are and I understand what the privileges are. However, I will say that it’s not easy to transfer to a position. A position Has to be open, You have to apply for it, and you have to be accepted. it’s not just a transfer just because you want to, and then you automatically get the right to transfer. That’s not how it works in the federal system. Additionally, you don’t automatically get reassigned to a new position if there are cuts/reduction in force in the federal system. You have to again reapply, and interview, but you don’t automatically get transferred to another position in the case of cuts.

@@demetriesnorth4135 Well again, it depends on what type of federal government job you might have had. Yes, I hear it is harder for the admin, medical, and IT guys to transfer out of state.
My transfer was smooth as butter, I did not have to write a hardship memo, or reapply for the position on USAJOBs, I'm a federal law enforcement employee so it might be different. Also, the USCIS guys who are non-leo have an easier time transferring out of state.

This is a really good video! I work for state of california but debating if it benefits me to switch to federal as jobs I want to do in state require a BAS degree. It seems there are many federal do not require if you have experience related to work. Need a video for california state employee vs. Federal. That be awesome!!!!

I really enjoy your content. Would be interested in a video that discusses moving to different Departments within the Federal Government. Does your current Department care? Are the managers vindictive? Or does it even matter since it is still the Federal Government?

    • @armandcuret1

That is a good idea. I will try to make a video discussing some of the high level differences when switching departments without getting too specific. Thanks.

The department of state and department of defense have government jobs all over the world. This includes Italy, Spain, Germany and Japan off the top of my head. The jobs would vary from Foreign Service Officer, Contract Specialist, IT Specialist to Food worker.
