    Another benefit is that they can’t fire you at will like they can in the private sector. If you tell them that you’ve accepted a job offer with another organization or agency, they can’t just up and fire you. Plus, they’ll need to transfer your information.

    Worth mentioning is the FIRREA agencies. Their pay scales are up to 40% higher than the Federal agencies under the GS & SES levels. And their benefits are more generous compared to other agencies in the Executive branch.
    Food for thought.

    If you’re a retired active duty military, you can start collecting your mil pension as soon as you have 20 yrs of service. Once out, wait 180 days to apply for civil service job, continue contributing to your TSP account you opened when you were in uniform. Even better if you could max it to reduce your taxable income. Also max out your IRA contribution. By the time you retire from fed service at 62 or later, you welcome pension income #2 + TSP withdrawals + IRA withdrawals + Social Security + if applicable, withdrawals from personal investments such as stocks, index funds, etc. Now you’re looking at 6 steady sources of income. I’m a fed contractor right now making $183k annual but about 45% of it is taken away for taxes and I’m no longer qualified to contribute to my IRA due to income limit. Thinking of abandoning my high pay and switch back to fed service.

    State government has comp time and the most I have to work is a 37.5 hour shift. Anything over is comp time and after 40 hours, I can elect for either overtime or comp time. Paid leave for state is 12 paid days off and 12 sick days, it goes up with years of service. The lowest tier is under 3 years of service.
    I love comparing both. I wonder what it is like for the city (local) governments.

    • @404TRUCKERTV
      @404TRUCKERTV ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, feds have that system as well. once you make 15yrs of service you accrue 8hrs a pay period of leave and 4hrs of sick. Credit time is wonderful because you can use it instead of your leave 🤣

      @@404TRUCKERTV I think the comparison in holidays is like 11.5 (state) to 12 (Feds).
      We get like a family oriented package where I am at.
      We do not celebrate all the holidays the Feds do and instead, we get a half day for Good Friday and make up days off (+1) on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

    In terms of other industries that I have worked in and comparing them to government benefits. The private lab job I had they gave everyone a lump sum 120 PTO hours a year and would max out at like 208 after 10 years (not counting the year you were hired in), 6 federal holidays off, and a birthday day off (which could be used anytime during that month).
    401k, they matched half of what one contributed up to 5%, and the health insurance was catastrophic (think $5000 deductible and at least $66 a month premium. Dental was free and vision was like $20/month premium).
    The best health insurance I had to date was working for a university hospital. The deductible was $500. Premium was like $24 month. Then you had vision and dental and that was another $15 together.
    But definitely, no pension in sight. I think it is only offered by state and federal governments.

    • @NotShowingOff
      @NotShowingOff ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I looked at insurance during the last open house.
      Federal insurance are usually nationwide ppo plans.
      University insurance is less expensive for two reasons.
      They are state-wide hmo or ppo, and they have a lot of young ppl putting into the pot, and not retirees, like the federal government.

    Do you think fed has better work life balance compared to contractors? I've always noticed the govt client is always stressed out meeting milestones, and the contractors hardly show up on site bc the clients are too busy to actually task the contractors. I've noticed this at multiple jobs I've been in.
    In my exp, Fed employee output is objective deliverables, where as contractor deliverables are often just subjective based did he keep the client happy, subjectively.
    I've found these to be consistent in DoD.
    What are your thoughts?

    • @armandcuret1
      @armandcuret1  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it is largely based on the agency. In my experience, I see contractors doing more of the technical work but feds have the overall responsibility.
      I do think feds have better job security and with that comes a degree of work life balance and flexibility without worrying about being let go at the end of a contract.

    Here is a question in regards to the pension. i've been in the system 4 years and i'll be changing from WG to GS in a few weeks, does that time carry over automatically from when first entering the system as a WG and moving over to the GS?

    • @armandcuret1
      @armandcuret1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer is yes, the time should automatically carry over.
      Almost all new federal employees hired after December 31, 1983, are automatically covered by FERS (This is the basic benefit plan or pension). You can check your earning statement to make sure you are covered by FERS.

      Rest of Washington is $40,262

  • @ld3534
    @ld3534 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a question for those who might have the answer. So let's say a job has the promotional ladder of GS 5-8. Every year you go up one grade. So if I start at GS 5 step 1, the next year I'd go to GS 6 step 1 all the way until I get to GS 8 step 1. However I transferred in from another agency and was salary matched. So I started at GS 5 step 7. Now what grade and step would I land on in the following year considering I started at GS 5 but in the middle of the steps?

    • @themack11
      @themack11 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      2 step rule means if you get promoted to the next grade you basically can’t lose money. They’ll put you at GS-6 and your step will be the lowest step that doesn’t equal a lesser amount than GS-5, step 7.
      Example where I’m at:
      GS-5, Step 7 = $45,238
      Promotion
      GS-6, Step 4 = $46,222
      They can’t put you below step 4 because GS-6, Step 3 = $44,822 which is less than you make currently.

      Yes, it is worth it if you are trying to enter the federal government and do not have many other hiring paths to get a job. After 12 months in the position you can always start applying to the next higher GS grade inside or outside of the federal agency.

    I learned from Haws Financial videos that a Military Reserve retiree can get a pension for the military and the federal civilian job. Double dipping.

    • @danielland3767
      @danielland3767 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't say double dipping, that would imply that it's coming out of the same pot.
      If you count anything from the government as the "pot" then sure, but military service & federal service are two different things, therefore two different pots.
      To infer double dipping means Congress is free to pull one one of the other, which they will gladly doe while leaving the civil servants in the wind.
      I get your point tho

    People are going to hate me for writing this, but I think the Federal government should do away with any type of religious holiday. Christmas should not be a day off.
    The only days off the Fed should have are the ones that they do have, Thanksgiving and New Years. Take the belief out of it.
    State governments do not really follow the Federal. I get a half day for Good Friday to make up for KY not following Federal Government and four day weekends for Christmas and New Years (observed on Friday and Monday) this year. These extra days are also because the state dropped two Federal holidays that are observed.
