The big kickoff point for MTG growth was 2009:
In store prerelease (Conflux, Alara Reborn)
Magic 2010 (moving away from the X edition sets)
Duels of the Planeswalkers digital game release (bringing in new and returning players)
Zendikar and the "hidden treasures" promo
All 4 of those things happened in the same year and launched years of strong growth

That's the appeal of Commander imo, the NOT knowing. It allows one, new or vet, to be able to play there deck and adjust when and if able. It's a different mindset from Standard/Modern and so on.

Forgot to thumbs up and subscribe.
Like this guys outlook and so far a welcome reprieve against the obvious bias seen from a number of other content creators.
    Keep it coming brother!

Thanks so much. I'm nothing short of honest. Sometimes to my business relationships detriment.

This is the first time I’ve seen this channel and I can see why this guy has the largest game store in America.
I cannot disagree with any of his points and I also like that while he personally prefers draft and standard that he doesn’t let it get in the way of how he runs his business.
There are a few things I’d like to add:
Regarding the honorable mention. The fact that WOTC LOVES to crush any real collectibility is evident by the exodus of veteran players.
The collectors in general are willing to spend the money as well.
Another sort of indicator is when people sell/trade in collections; seeing any complete sets come in is a rarity now and it’s easy to see why.
The obliteration of any card longevity coupled with the sheer number of different versions of a single card makes it all but impossible.
In regards price it’s easy to see a correlation between the growth in demand for singles vs the drop in demand for sealed product.
This is fine as long as the sealed product is affordable enough for stores to crack open and sell singles but with MH3 we might get to a sort of breaking point.
What I mean is people want what they want and if the singles are astronomically high then a portion of the market will inevitably proxy what they want, some will return when prices go back down but some are gone forever.
I’m not saying proxies are good or bad but more of an indicator of the effects of WOTC’s policies.
Lastly, I’ll end on a positive by mentioning the set I like to call WOTC’s “happy accident” which is thunder junction.
I hope they are taking notes on that one bc they stumbled on what I think is a good formula for set design and pricing.
Everyone expected it to suck and if it would have released as intended then it would have but by rolling everything together actually produced a set that was fun to play, had great value and wasn’t priced out of many peoples reach.
I’m not sure what data the op has but OTJ seemed to fuel a sort of resurgence in sealed product demand even if it was primarily in the form of packs; it was still a welcome reprieve I’m sure.
Im not advocating for rolling 3 sets into 1 but moreso building future sets similar to OTJ in price and content.
I think the players were more shocked than the vendors when they discovered it was/is an overall fun set to play for just about any format and did generate enough excitement to justify a gamble on a few packs for a great pull…..something that’s been sorely lacking lately in my opinion.
Ps I’m sure mh3 will have some great hits too but not at those OTJ prices tho.

Great episode! Very excited for the coming star wars one. I have heard employees in the past say the star wars miniature games sell fairly well but don't draw much of a crowd to events. Would love to know your thoughts on if that is true and why that is.

Sealed product is not worth it and there's so much, singles are relatively cheap but they add up quickly and the cost of getting into the game is far too high.

Definitely challenges. It’s toughest because the most loved format is such a complicated way to play the game.

Weird if Pokémon haven't already passed modern mtg at this point.

Pokemon always killed Magic in Mass Market but the numbers were typically flipped in hobby stores. Pokemon has had more serious lulls as well. Magic is like climbing a mountain for a trend line Pokemon has been a bit more roller coaster at times.

@@traviss9612 What an excellent answer! It seems shopkeepers doesn't share same fear/opinion that most youtube channels analyze that MTG has been disconnected from fanbase and basically going to diminish away after it has had irreversable damage. Of course that's heavily 'investor' side view from oldschool population where we don't see any hype. On store level (daily selling new product) MTG has been reported to be still strong. Also against all expectations new graded mtg has done well which I never could have believed 1-3 years ago.

@@Possu81 Magic is doing much better than I predicted at the beginning of the year. Karlov weas a disaster for sales but if you look at the quality of cards it's fantastic so I am holding. The gimmicks for the set and the theme didn't work but the cards are good. It will rebound. The Magic back catalog has punched really well. The only thing taking a hit right now is Vintage. It's just slowed and gone down some. It's weird because the last big climb happened with BTC and ETH were up. Both are up now but for whatever reason Vintage didn't pop. I think it's just not as flashy. They are seeing higher returns on newer graded stuff with easier turn arounds. Magic is gonna be just fine.
