The Safehouse is still going strong.
Just tickling the Algo: informative stuff, this might change my mind about attending in the future.
You gotta go at least once. :)
I just started working last year at a small FLGS and your retail videos have been extremely helpful!!! There are not as many educational resources out there for FLGS like there are for so many other markets. The videos about the products are helpful as well!
They don't even show the cards.
Make sure to stop by booth 2766 and say hi to Simon and Chase. Erik’s Curiosa (Sorcery Contested Realm) will be at Gen Con this year!
Awesome. We will.
I love your retail content. Keep it all coming and thank you for sharing!!
🤩
You can try the game for free on Board Game Arena, and see if it could interest you. But be aware that you could end up ordering a starter deck and some boosters fairly quickly after.
Will you be opening KS displays Live ?
Pass on altered. Just not for me.
yeah, too boardgamish, and not fun calculations with limited turn by turn options, IMO
this game is here to stay i can't wait for my pledge! best modern TCG to date that will makes me turn Lorcana into a normal CCG, and give up on star wars (unfortunatly! it's pretty good, but i find it pretty ugly!)
one more comment for the referencing (is that a word, i'm from france) : i know magic is still there, but i just play commander and commander multi for now, and flesh and blood is a bit too much.. complex (?) for me, i don't know, i didn't fall in love, i think it's reserved to an "elite". Altered is really making your brain work during parties, but still is very accessible.
Star Wars is far better sorry
@@icedchiefmatter of taste ! I love it, i think it's great, but feels a lot more limited to me. And the arts are just flavorless (to say the least) even for a comicbook fan, this is not what i look for. Lorcana, flesh and blood, one piece,...every others looks better in my opinion.
Thanks for taking my content request for next week, Travis! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on GenCon. I've got an English AlteredTCG podcast called... NAP:ITT /in the Tumult/ It's an in-universe lore podcast about an Exalt with a diamond rebirthmark looking into Asgartha from inside the Tumult. Best of luck to you in the Faction Tournament on Saturday at 3PM! I won't be at that one, but if I see you, I'll say hi.
We held two roadshows for the game but most the people that came were from too far away to actually form a stable community. Maybe Gencon will jumpstart it but I don’t think we will have much success with it unfortunately. Feels a lot like BSS.
This game sounds interesting, but is giving Keyforge launch vibes. Such high promises, hopefully they can deliver better than keyforge did. I love innovative ideas, but they have such an uphill battle. I hope it does well!
it will, simply because the game is well born and is nothing but great! ( ex magic champions and renowned developpers from card and boardgaming industries). You may only stick to the starter decks and find a rich 1 on 1 game that would easily match games like 7 wonder duel or games like this, nothing is won because people will stick to veterans like Magic (i'm guilty). But there is a space for great games like this!
Hope you continue sharing your thoughts.
Great video, but some notes: 1. A lot has changed since early meta regarding ECL. It is no longer considered even close to bannable, and plenty of top decks with green decks no longer run it. 2. They addressed 25hp bases missing. Basically, they don't want to set the expectation that every single new set will include rare bases. They want it to be exciting each time we get new ones, rather than bloat it out. But they said more would be coming. 3. Leaders do seem less powerful, but many of them also feel like seeds for future sets, more so than Set 1 leaders (Aphra is a good example). As far as Set 1 leaders straight up invalidating Set 2 ones, the only one that really comes up is Yellow Boba. But even that may change as time goes on.
They did say in a livestream that they won't do 25 hp bases unless they feel like there's a good design which imo is nice for not forcing them out. But also since they take rare slots they kinda sucked to see in packs if you already had one since tbh you only need 1 Rare base and all Dupes aren't really needed
I agree that the other 25 hp bases are a lot weaker than ECL. But I think ECL is crucial for the meta. If ECL didn't exist, a lot of decks wouldn't be able to deal with hyper aggressive strategies early. The aggro decks don't really lose much by not having ECL imo. I think they should come up with other creative base designs. Give them effects that have less straight forward "value". Some ideas: - base gives a resource smuggle and give plus 2 to the cost - base let's a unit with cost 3 or less deal it's damage to another unit in the same arena - maybe a 35 hp base that makes your units cost 1 more - a base that let's you return a unit with cost 6 or less from your graveyard/or resource to your hand there are infinite options! Great video, I enjoyed your perspective.
Differne is that with Destiny they pushed the second set to reprint the first.. That made alot people pissed off.. They are reprinting swu set 1 inbetween and releasing before the holidays, not disrupting other sets.
They've announced a Set 1 SWU reprint 'around the holidays' which they said awhile back. I agree about the Showdown promos. They just feel underwhelming in comparison to Set 1. Unrefusable Offer (the Top 8 promo) just doesn't compare to Windu - it's also worth noting that it's a rarity downshift from Legendary to Rare. I wonder if they wanted to tone it down a bit as Showdowns are supposed to be Casual-level events? The Showdowns in my area have been rather competitive but this seems a bit inevitable until FFG rolls out their fully fledged competitive events because, outside of big cons or events, there's just not anything else for people to engage with competitively at the moment.
Great episode, you spoke to the game very well. Calling out specific cards really shows you live and breathe this business
TRAVIS COME BACK TO PLAY SWU WITH US! WE MISS YOU!!!
Another fine discussion, looking forward to more behind the scenes info.
Thanks so much!
Nice intro video to the painting part of the hobby. The lighting and white balance could be improved in future videos, the finished product probably didn't show up looking the way it does in person.
Lol at blood and guts and then, going to AEW. Need to go to another AEW show
The Buffalo show was great. Forbidden Door was solid too.
@@traviss9612 definitely more reason for me to go. Being on the West Coast feels like a deadzone most of the time. But we do have some good indie scenes
Would love to hear more about staff training, feedback, hiring, meetings, and some of the more basic things for a business, but I would love to hear about them from your perspective.
Thanks for the topic ideas Heath. I’ll see what I can do.
Great info as always
There's always this idea that game stores are run "for the love of the hobby" and not profits, so it's great to hear the ways a physical store can survive and thrive in a digital "on my doorstep in 48 hours" age. Thanks for another insightful video
Thanks so much. We’re very profit focused. Without profit we are no good to anyone.
We’re just really excited to hear about how you think and run the store. 🎉
This highlights so many of the reasons that I choose not to shop at a LGS unless they can meet/beat the price of online. My most local store was online and opened retail but they’ve got a lot to learn.
Would love to hear about building a community!
That’s a vote for Community building. Thanks so much.
I think organization and flow are important but there can be such a thing as too organized. If things become so uniform that people tune out, or they're afraid to touch anything because it's too organized then that can hurt sales, people start treating it like a museum or library. I like to keep some "organized chaos" in my store which is military surplus. I have a $1 bin that all kinda of undesirable stuff goes in, anything from off-paired boots to ripped clothes, and people love digging through it. If I had a game store I'd have a little bit of organized chaos, a bin of $1 DVDs or something
The dead display was such a killer at Toys R Us. If a corporate person came to visit and we didn't have the display up; even if it was empty, we got crapped on. It made absolutely no sense to me because the space could have been used for other items. If it was something we knew would be back it made sense to keep them, but if anything, pull the cardboard piece until the product showed up. It takes little effort to clear a spot to put it back in.
How can we report small game stores selling the free rpg day stuff?
The bit about having sufficient clearance in the aisles is a significant one. The author and researcher Paco Underhill who wrote the book "Why We buy-The Science of Shopping" talks about the dreaded 'Butt-Brush' effect. Specifically, he effectively documented that if the aisles are crowded or cluttered enough that a woman finds that someone bushes against her while she is trying to look at an item on a shelf, this will often be sufficiently unnerving that she will leave the store without making a purchase. Myself, I find that if there is visual confusion where I cannot easily determine the pricing or other relevant information of a product, I will walk away. I remember once walking into a major hardware chain store where the display for their shop lights had many of the lights on display mislabeled or not labeled, and worse yet, many of them were not actually even illuminated! Suffice it to say that exactly zero shop lights were purchased that afternoon.
I read Why We Buy once a year. Thanks for watching.
I quite like the flow of the current store. Except that my son LOVES the Gacha machines, so it’s hard to get out there door without a visit there.
Don't feel too bad they get plenty of tokens fed to them. :)
I liked the flow of the old store and I feel like the new store is still finding its feet. I’m probably just SO used to walking the old store it’s burned into my head.
Lol, I get this at some places too. For example, if I go to the Wegmans on Mt. Read, it's a mirror of my usual stores. To the left is the fresh food area and to the right is all the aisles with groceries. It really throws me off. I could definitely see how you could get the same feeling at the new store. It definitely is different and gives a totally different feeling than the old location did.
If you ever feel like stopping by a MTG/gaming podcast I'd love to have you on Cardboard Conversations sometime!
covered a lot of good information ❤
Thanks for making this episode! I enjoyed the detailed reasoning behind carrying these product lines. Also, selling geek themed soap to gamers is genius! 😜
Love your videos!! Just started working at a small game store last year and your videos are so helpful!
Bit harder at a store your size, but we do small batch inventory counts daily. Any item that sells that day gets counted that day. Any item that hasn't sold in 30 days gets counted day 31. It helps catching those shortages, misplaced items, receiving errors and the like a lot quicker. We cycle through all of our inventory at least once a month. Again though, we are a lot smaller and usually have only around 250-300K in inventory on hand during non-holiday season.
Excellent! Continuing to appreciate these lessons in small business. I imagine that the multitude of different miniature paint options must make for a bit of a juggling act as well. Looking at my desk, I find that I'm using at least three different brands of paint, which has to be a real challenge for any store to keep in stock consistently.
It can't be. We look at the line overall and see how it performs. 50% of the paints in a line typically carry the line.
Love the critical thinking explanation of Frosthaven. That makes so much sense!
Thank you. Sometimes that sort of thing is obvious after the fact and other times there's layers that go into it. The nice part about a game like that is that I know if I put it at 20% off then I won't have any of the shelf.
Today I learned how much I take walking into a fully stocked store for granted. Surprised that there are folks that shop for Frost-haven at retail after how successful it was on KS. I have definitely seen the Museum Shop holding on to ancient SKUs waiting for that "one customer" to walk in the door.
Museum shops exist. Occasionally stores can create enough dead stock where everyday they sell enough of the dead stock that it makes them keep more dead stock and the cycle continues. I don't think it's successful model if there are multiple stores in the area doing it. I also think in most cases those stores are just ignoring or don't have any point of sale data to say "this should have left the building years ago". For me it's a merchandising nightmare. Deadlines where you are holding expansions and such gets really ugly.
Gotta have stuff to sell stuff
First
These videos are fascinating. For a topic request, I'm wondering if you could talk about the recent removal of X-Wing and Armada stock on the Asmodee website. There are no really competitive fleet combat games in the market to play instead. Honestly, it's just confusing overall. What do you think? People have a ton of money invested into both of these game systems.
Anytime I see a company discontinue a game I chalk it up to not being financially solvent for them to continue producing it. I could speculate as to why but it almost always comes down to the line not producing enough to continue maintaining it.
@@traviss9612 thank you for the reply. I definitely agree. But I also have watched some really bizarre decisions come out of the Star Wars miniatures studio at Atomic Mass Games ever since they got the lines so they could then make shatterpoint. Watching people sell armada ships for 10x MSRP on eBay makes me believe in the case of armada they should have raised prices from the bargain days of the 2015 prices to make the game profitable. Thank you again for the awesome content.
the asmodee store moved all of the x-wing and Armada products to sold out on their webstore. What does this mean? Are the games being canceled?!
