- While many acknowledge Truman Capote’s 1965 “In Cold Blood'' as the first of the true crime genre, it actually dates back to the Renaissance period when murderous tales were part of the oral tradition, later transcribed by scholars.
Today, true crime novels are often topping bestsellers lists. To explore why there is such a public fascination with this genre of storytelling, Crime Beat sits down with five acclaimed authors pushing the boundaries of true crime.

This was awesome thank you for the work with the authors !
What gets to me with Mommy don't, is the way she left her daughter to be found that way. Horrible mother
crime beat goes full circle
Wow! Nice change-up. I really enjoyed this. Thank you
Fantastic episode. I especially loved hearing fro Charlotte Gray.
Love this channel brilliant
I have Charlotte Gray's , "The Massey Murder". It's a great book. If you are ever in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery (Toronto) you can see the Massey family plot. Pretty hard to miss. It's HUGE.
This was really interesting thank you @crimebeat
I absolutely love true crime. They are the only books i read. My favorite author was Max Haines, and i cherish my autographed books by him.
He pales in comparison with Ann Rule and so many others. Max was a rank amateur in that aspect. Famous in Toronto, perhaps known somewhat across Canada but NOWHERE else. Set your sights higher.
@@stevemartin6144 I also love Ann Rule....have all her books. She was awesome
Ann Rule set the standard of excellency, in my opinion ♡
@@coraleahs I also love Ann Rule. I have many of her books as well
Great video guys
I'm sorry but fictionalizing True Crime is not writing True Crime. Both the first two authors wrote from the point of view of one of the victims. How can a woman write a book in the Modernist Style, without ever meeting the victim? How does she know what the poor girl thought? To me this is not True Crime. This is True Crime fictionalized.
She have a documentary in netflix.
13:20 crocodile tears
All the wiping her mom is doing yet I didn’t see tears 😳
Please do an episode on Luka Magnotta
There's a documentary about him on Netflix
Its disrespectful to write books like those just to make money
No it is not
How do you know what their reasons are for writing the books? I don’t know why these people wrote the books but you apparently do.
It’s conflicting to watch as well! I always skip the ads too!
Idk if Parents need to be blamed or if daughter is messed up to begin with.
Wow!
Το είδα και στο Netflix λέγεται Τι έκανε η Τζένιφερ
USA police use phsyic medium detectives why not Canadian police???
Oops sorry her name is Katrina, R.I.P little girl.❤😢
Karissa..
KARISSA
Oh my dam auto correct karrisa

Poor Anthony Robart. At 35:00, he mentions a "true crime novel". Ha! Doesn't he know that there is NO SUCH ANIMAL? A novel is a fictional book. "True crime" is non-fiction. So "true crime novel"......is it a non-fictional, fictional book? A fictional, non-fiction book? A false, true crime book? A true, false crime book? A comic book? Regardless, a great episode. Thank you!!
Reading a Wikipedia don`t make You an expert.
Word salad will not impart brilliance.
This happened in Canada? Really? Doesn't look like it.
Are you drunk Lahey? Go find Randy.
What part don't you understand?
another horseshit episode due to lack of content. smh.
Find a more suitable programme to watch, if you are of that opinion.

Wow he says sorry??
Big deal. Anyone can say that. I don't believe that it was sincere. He's arrogant and will never change.
People have all the power. I have empathy for ONLY non human creatures. Empathy is a made up idea that really means "thank god its not me or my child", Humans ONLY really love their own family and thats really all. If it was your child to be killed or your friends???empathy be damned and you know it.
I think that’s just you, perhaps a thorough mental evaluation should be conducted. Your lack of empathy is a sign of a sociopath. Curious to what other symptoms you may have. Arrogance? Impulsiveness? Hunger for power or dominance? Ect?
Have another toke.
@@Diamon.d100% babe, Ive mourned deeply for weeks;for people, and families I have never known. MANY times in my 47 years.. This sad commenter clearly displays sociopathy and a lack of normal emotion. I suggested she go and hug a tree. 😅
