That was a very heartbreaking episode to see how someone and his family loved our country enough to come back to visit only to lose his way of life.I think I speak on behalf of all Canadians when I say I'm so sorry for what happened to you when you came to our country to visit. We aren't like other countries that shoot and kill people everyday, we value life and I hope you can continue coming back to enjoy Canada cause we have a beautiful country, and to the offender regardless of your age and history, you should be punished for the irreversible wrong you caused or you will grow up not owning up to the consequences of your actions.

I really do hope those kids are able to be rehabilitated and grow up to be happy, sober people. We all deserve that chance. His sentence seems light. But I won't judge that because I do not work in the field of law or law enforcement. So I don't think I could lay down any reasonable arguments either way. I will have to trust in our legal system.
What I worry more about is what this kid is going to do with his time on parole? Will he be protected from this kind of lifestyle? Or was he just thrown back into the bad fish pond? It's not fair. If he goes directly back to the troubled place he was in before, that would be hard to escape from when you're so young and feeling hopeless and small. I hope all those kids are ok 4 years later now.

      Prevention is needed.
This glorification of violence in popular media and lack of real opportunities looms large for many.
It’s like the economic conditions of the Eighties for similar reasons. The wealthy want to divest themselves of responsibility and then cry foul about lenience.
Sounds like you’re wanting to play into the For Profit prisons camp narrative.

The shooter is from a protected class in Canada. He was already known to police despite his youth, however the ‘extenuating circumstances’ of his protected class designation means that he will never be held accountable. And he WILL go on to reoffend, he has learned nothing from this

The Canadian justice system has always been a joke.
This victim will never get his life back.
The offender gets a slap on the wrist.
      The payout from the
Aberta govt. was an insult. All the medical & rehab bills by the victim should have been paid for Alberta, not to mention his 4 years of lost income.

Such a tragic and totally unnecessary act. Thank God the father survived.
As a Canadian, our justice system infuriates me sometimes. I can get wanting to protect a minor's identity when it comes to petty crimes or something like that but shooting a man in the forehead for no reason? Give me a break, ridiculous.
The teen doesn't deserve having his identity protected and any problems he would have down the line for being know for what he did is all his problem and of his own doing.
And i get the fact the they didn't think they could get a conviction of attempted murder but being charged with "discharging a firearm in a motor vehicle"? Big whoop. He shot the man in the damn forehead, i don't care how high he was or how fast they were driving, shooting someone in the forehead clearly shows only one intent. Smh
Then making excuses for the teen by saying he grew up in a troubled environment and being mentally undeveloped was just infuriating me even more.

As a Canadian im embarrassed of what so low life drug induced teen did to you father and family. I have met many people over the years camping from European country’s who absolutely love Canada. Our justice system here is absolutely embarrassing and needs to be completely over hauled. Some of our First Nations people need to stop playing the victim card on there up bringing to get them out of paying for tragic crimes they commit and that also goes for all Canadian as well. We seem to have a HUG A THUG PROGRAM here were it’s never some one’s fault or it’s there up bringing to blame. I hope your father keeps recovering and still sees our country for the beauty he seen when he first came here.

The prosecutors in my son’s murder trial did nothing at the trial of the killer but stab my son in the back as well. It was a miscarriage of Justice and the murderer blamed my son whose voice was silenced by the brutality of the murder. I don’t care what age they are, anyone who takes a life need to be accountable and face the consequences. The laws need to change for the victims not be for the murderers.

We definitely need stronger laws in this country. Especially the 25 yrs as a life sentence. This young offender should have stayed longer and received counselling and education. Then he should have spent time talking to people who were affected by violence. Giving him a slap on the wrist probably did nothing for him.

The shooter is from a protected class in Canada. He was already known to police despite his youth, however the ‘extenuating circumstances’ of his protected class designation means that he will never be held accountable. And he WILL go on to reoffend, he has learned nothing from this.

I just saw crimebeat the story about against All odds. I'm a Canadian and I am absolutely gobsmacked with what this prosecutor was saying is he stupid what is somebody get to him n threats his family? Unbelievable!!!! The guy was 17 n looked younger??????? There r child killers did this idiot prosecuted know this fact,! This should do exactly what he was doing but all seem to be about this poor little kid absolutely disgusting! So because the guy didn't die it wasn't attempted murder! Well I'm a Canadian and I am so embarrassed and disappointed somebody gets caught with some drugs on him and they get a bigger reaction that this did. And the copper or detective was so happy didn't have to engage in gunfight because this was only a child small in stature🤦
This poor man was travelling innocently with his God bless there's some little piece of crap and his buddies decided to kill this man. Mistaken identity or not
    It was attempted murder.
Shame on our Justice system! We'll wait til this child as the police called him... Does the same either influenced by someone or on his own someday!

The laws in Canada are disappointing.
There are many young people who come from broken homes but they don’t get into cars drunk and high and shoot at innocent people. Prison for a long time would of been more appropriate.
Make criminals accountable for their poor decisions 21 months +15 months probation what a joke!

Im always surprised at how lenient their justice system is in Canada. Why was this not classed as an attempted murder as he shot at the whole family in that car and didn't stop to find out if they were dead or alive. That poor man has in my mind lost his life as he knew it, and doesn't even realise why. What has that little POS shooter been doing? making more customised guns perhaps. Potential school shooter, maybe. He should have been made to pay for all the medical bills and care for life to the man he shot, and charged with possession of a firearm 😫 This case is disgusting and very unjust, as your whole system is in Canada. He would have got 10 to life in UK🤬
