Looks like comments from the US where they lock children up for life. Listen to what the detective says about punishment of youths. Canadá is similar to the UK in its treatment of youth crime. The brain is not fully developed until at least the age of 21.

      Prevention is needed.
This glorification of violence in popular media and lack of real opportunities looms large for many.
It’s like the economic conditions of the Eighties for similar reasons. The wealthy want to divest themselves of responsibility and then cry foul about lenience.
Sounds like you’re wanting to play into the For Profit prisons camp narrative.

That was a very heartbreaking episode to see how someone and his family loved our country enough to come back to visit only to lose his way of life.I think I speak on behalf of all Canadians when I say I'm so sorry for what happened to you when you came to our country to visit. We aren't like other countries that shoot and kill people everyday, we value life and I hope you can continue coming back to enjoy Canada cause we have a beautiful country, and to the offender regardless of your age and history, you should be punished for the irreversible wrong you caused or you will grow up not owning up to the consequences of your actions.

I really do hope those kids are able to be rehabilitated and grow up to be happy, sober people. We all deserve that chance. His sentence seems light. But I won't judge that because I do not work in the field of law or law enforcement. So I don't think I could lay down any reasonable arguments either way. I will have to trust in our legal system.
What I worry more about is what this kid is going to do with his time on parole? Will he be protected from this kind of lifestyle? Or was he just thrown back into the bad fish pond? It's not fair. If he goes directly back to the troubled place he was in before, that would be hard to escape from when you're so young and feeling hopeless and small. I hope all those kids are ok 4 years later now.

Our justice system here is absolutely embarrassing and needs to be completely over hauled. Some of our First Nations people need to stop playing the victim card on there up bringing to get them out of paying for tragic crimes they commit and that also goes for all Canadian as well. We seem to have a HUG A THUG PROGRAM here were it’s never some one’s fault or it’s there up bringing to blame. Such a tragic and totally unnecessary act. Thank God the father survived.
As a Canadian, our justice system infuriates me sometimes. I can get wanting to protect a minor's identity when it comes to petty crimes or something like that but shooting a man in the forehead for no reason? Give me a break, ridiculous.
The teen doesn't deserve having his identity protected and any problems he would have down the line for being know for what he did is all his problem and of his own doing.
And i get the fact the they didn't think they could get a conviction of attempted murder but being charged with "discharging a firearm in a motor vehicle"? Big whoop. He shot the man in the damn forehead, i don't care how high he was or how fast they were driving, shooting someone in the forehead clearly shows only one intent. Smh
Then making excuses for the teen by saying he grew up in a troubled environment and being mentally undeveloped was just infuriating me even more.

That poor man has in my mind lost his life as he knew it, and doesn't even realise why. What has that little POS shooter been doing? making more customised guns perhaps. Potential school shooter, maybe. He should have been made to pay for all the medical bills and care for life to the man he shot, and charged with possession of a firearm 😫 This case is disgusting and very unjust, as your whole system is in Canada. He would have got 10 to life in UK🤬

In the voice of great Canadian David Suzuki: “The species seen here is endemic across Canada and especially rural Alberta. Its parasitic lifestyle reeks havoc on the social fabrics of its local ecosystems. These animals are constantly in search of unwilling audiences to whom they can spout their hateful rhetoric. They often propagate in large herds on Internet forums and in YouRube comment sections. I present the increasingly rare, Red Neck Racist.”

The area that this happened in the Stoney Nakoda First Nations reserve area and hearing that a lot of alcohol and crystal meth was involved the assumption can be drawn that the perpetrator and the other 3 people in the red car were probably young First Nations kids, so, not only were they protected by their ages, but also by the fact that they were natives. Lenience in this case would have been a given, and being part First Nations (Haida) myself, I have seen it happen far too often, but this crime SHOULD have been A) prosecuted as an adult case, B) charged as Attempted Murder, Assault Causing, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Assault using a vehicle in the act. The other 3 should have at the LEAST received a minimum sentence of 12-24 months in youth custody and3-5 years of mandatory probation. Of course, this is I.M.H.O. and NOT the letter of the Youth Offenders Act, and OF COURSE, the lawyer who defended them (and almost EVERY perpetrator of any and all heinous and or gang related/organized crime related/high profile, high visuality crimes in Calgary and environs was Balfour Der)

I have a 16 year old son. He knows right from wrong and isn't on his own long enough to get drunk or do meth. To be honest, I can't even envision it.
Someone, I assume, his parents, failed this young man. It doesn't excuse what he did, but parents need to raise better young people. Otherwise, innocent people like this lovely German family, suffer.

Purposely aiming and firing the gun at somebody after your friend tells you 'he doesnt like the owner of the vehicle', not even sure if its the actual person he doesn't like is crazy and murderous. And the excuse that the teen's mentally underdeveloped (????) and family troubles at home is a ticket to more crimes in d future if canadian laws are sooo lenient. Should've been longer jail time for all of them to learn their lessons. Relieved and thankful that the victim survived and even came back to visit Canada again. They are all good people with forgiving hearts. God bless the family.

I just saw crimebeat the story about against All odds. I'm a Canadian and I am absolutely gobsmacked with what this prosecutor was saying is he stupid what is somebody get to him n threats his family? Unbelievable!!!! The guy was 17 n looked younger??????? There r child killers did this idiot prosecuted know this fact,! This should do exactly what he was doing but all seem to be about this poor little kid absolutely disgusting! So because the guy didn't die it wasn't attempted murder! Well I'm a Canadian and I am so embarrassed and disappointed somebody gets caught with some drugs on him and they get a bigger reaction that this did. And the copper or detective was so happy didn't have to engage in gunfight because this was only a child small in stature🤦
This poor man was travelling innocently with his God bless there's some little piece of crap and his buddies decided to kill this man. Mistaken identity or not
    It was attempted murder.
Shame on our Justice system! We'll wait til this child as the police called him... Does the same either influenced by someone or on his own someday!

Your ass needs to go to jail. I don't give a shit anymore either how you grew up.....put these thugs in jail. Let them learn by going to jail. Not by excusing there actions .
